In recent years, seeing a show with tons of intrigue and a high-quality concept get axed after one season has become an unfortunate trend. Many point fingers at Netflix, a streaming service that has been continuously canceling beloved shows before they get a second season. However, while Netflix has received backlash for many undeserving cancelations, other networks and services have done it before.
What stings the most about these specific series is how many fresh and promising ideas they contain. These shows could have been memorable additions to their respective genres, yet their one-season run hindered that potential. Because low ratings and viewership couldn't justify the cost that went into these shows, their networks or services pulled the plug. 1899, Terra Nova, and The Society are just a few of many series with outstanding premises, but they only had one season for audiences.

After an incredible third installment, the hit sci-fi horror series From was renewed for a 10-episode fourth season in November 2024, and fans have been buzzing with excitement ever since. Everyone wants to know what new horrors await the residents of the nightmarish town, but unfortunately, we won't be seeing this beloved show return to our screens until sometime next year.
From season 4 was confirmed for a 2026 release when the renewal was announced. Production on the fourth season is slated to begin this year in Nova Scotia, where the previous three seasons were shot, but a filming start date has not been revealed. Also, given that this show heavily utilizes special effects, we can likely expect a longer post-production period. This is likely the reason why we won't be seeing From season 4 until next year. It's the lengthy filmmaking process. While this is extremely disappointing for fans, we're expecting the wait...

David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham have joined the cast of “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” as the parents of the title character, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
“House of the Dragon” actress Milly Alcock headlines as Kara Zor-El (aka Supergirl), which TheWrap first reported. Production kicks off this month in the U.K.
According to DC heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, the “Supergirl” movie will be based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely‘s comic book of the same name, released in July of 2023.
“This is a very different type of Supergirl,” Gunn said. “In our [film], we see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from, you know, the time he’s an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock chip-off of Krypton and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life,...

David Krumholtz, who was recently part of the all-star cast of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, and British actress Emily Beecham have joined the space-faring cast of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which Craig Gillespie is directing for Warner Bros. Discovery arm DC Studios.
The feature, which began shooting this week in DC’s UK production hub of Leavesden, is inspired by the Tom King and Bilquis Evely comic book mini-series and stars House of the Dragon‘s Milly Alcock playing Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman.
It’s unclear how faithful the script by Ana Nogueira is to the comic, which eschewed the traditional good vs. bad tropes and instead was a cosmic character piece, spanning many worlds and alien cultures. Did fans fight back against Netflix’ decision to cancel 1899? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Yes, fans are still all set to fight back, demanding two more seasons. The sci-fi thriller, 1899, wasn’t just bending minds—it was sparking a full-on rebellion.
The petition hits hard: “1899 was clearly created with multiple seasons in mind. After the first season, there are a lot of unanswered questions and a big cliffhanger at the end of the last episode. We want a renewal of the show and a proper end to the story.” Clearly, viewers are not about to let this go. They’re craving answers, and they’re willing to fight for them.
And the signatures? They’re pouring in at lightning speed. We’re talking about 30,156 signatures (and climbing) in under a day. That’s some serious fandom loyalty. Some fans are even bringing up the Dark connection—1899’s creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese.

Over the past decade, television fans have developed a healthy appetite for sci-fi mystery stories that will blow their minds away. A recent example of a TV series that has kept viewers in a bind is MGM's sci-fi horror From. Shows like these keep the audience on their toes from the very first episode, as one is plunged into an obscure world of twists and turns that never get addressed until the fans are absolutely frustrated.
An intricate lore, ambiguous characters, and a complex network of story arcs are what make shows like From tick, and despite the prolonged suspense, the audience loves the slow-burn storytelling. Since From has just wrapped its critically acclaimed Season 3, viewers can tune into some of these fantastic From-like TV series that have become a goldmine of fan theories for the respective fandoms.

Netflix has canceled Kaos after one season, dashing hopes of the Greek gods returning for season 2. The cancelation of Jeff Goldblum's Netflix series arrived a little more than a month after its streaming debut. Goldblum played an insecure and arrogant version of Zeus in the modernized and darkly comical reimagining of Greek mythology. Kaos' cast of characters also included Janet McTeer as Hera, Stephen Dillane as Prometheus, and Aurora Perrineau as the human Eurydice, who challenged the gods' authority.
Season 1 had a generally favorable reception, with a 76% critic score and 83% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Many reviews praised the performances, including Goldblum's depiction of Zeus, and applauded the series' dark comedy and social satire. Kaos season 1's ending brought many of the storylines to a satisfying conclusion, but it also set the stage for a second season. Unfortunately, Kaos won't be able to deliver on that promise, despite the series' largely positive reviews.

Kaos star Aurora Perrineau teases that a season 2 renewal announcement may be imminent. The modernized, dark comedy retelling of Greek mythology features Perrineau as the human Eurydice, known as Riddy, as she becomes entangled in a brewing rebellion against the deeply insecure and tyrannical Zeus (Jeff Goldblum). Kaos season 1's ending provides satisfying payoffs for Riddy, Zeus, and the other characters, while also setting up many storylines for a potential season 2.
On X, Perrineau has now hinted that Kaos season 2 will soon be officially announced while encouraging audiences to continue streaming the series on Netflix. Check out her post below:
A little birdy told me we could get news soon! Stream #kaos on Netflix this weekend so that I can leave you alone and see all these people again. Investing in a new show is scary. I loved #Dbd too but boycotting wont change anything. Itll just stop new things from continuing pic.

Most TV viewers have had to cope with losing a beloved show that was canceled way too soon. Sometimes, a show needs more than a season to find its footing, but the television climate doesn't always allow a series that kind of time to find an audience. One platform known to cancel a TV series way too early is Netflix, despite once taking the stance of allowing their shows to find an audience. The list of canceled Netflix series is so vast now that a hashtag has gone viral on social media as fans remember and shed a tear for some of the platform's fallen TV projects.
If you head over to X, you will find that #NetflixCancels is trending as fans discuss a slew of shows that were killed on the platform far too soon. Much of this seems to have been sparked by a 2017 post on Netflix's then-official Twitter page that states,...

The German Netflix sci-fi 1899 intertwined sci-fi concepts and cliffhangers, leaving viewers puzzled and intrigued after each episode. Kerberos and Prometheus, the two ships in 1899, symbolized reality and perception, playing a crucial role in the show's plot. Due to the cancelation of 1899, the complex themes of reality, grief, and control were left unexplored in the show's ending.
With Netflix's 1899 ending after only one season, the cliffhanger twists and turns of its eight episodes demand a bit of explanation. Throughout its run,1899 explained a multitude of sci-fi concepts and narrative devices without offering a clear explanation for any of them. To add another layer of intrigue and drama, 1899 ended each episode with a puzzling cliffhanger while gradually unfolding the traumatic backstories of its primary characters. 1899 had the best of both of its genres and delivered one of the most mind-bending shows in recent memory.

1899 and 3 Body Problem had the potential to be great sci-fi shows, but 1899 was unfairly canceled after season 1. Netflix's renewal of 3 Body Problem gives hope for the future of sci-fi shows, despite past cancellations like The Oa and Sense8. Although 1899 may not get a second chance, the positive shift in Netflix's approach to programming is a hopeful sign for fans of canceled shows.
I am glad that Netflix has renewed 3 Body Problem for two more seasons, but it sadly reminds me of another epic sci-fi show's unfair cancelation. Netflix isn't just known for cancellations, especially in recent years.
It's also the reigning champion of spontaneous cancellations, catching fans off-guard and delivering some real gut punches.
Some refer to it as a cancellation loop, and it's making viewers wary of investing their time and subscription money on new and exciting shows.
Netflix is dealing with the self-inflicted wounds that come with popular shows, forcing them into an endless loop that's not based on reality but perception.
It's also changing successful, tried-and-true storytelling formulas and driving creators to other streaming platforms so their product stands a chance at longevity.
To be fair, this is not unique to Netflix, especially as other streaming platforms continue to grow.
But Netflix is the Og with the most shows and brand recognition.
Because of that, the damage to the brand from especially infamous cancellations feels more extensive to fans.

Weronika Tolfiska, who directed the first four episodes of “Baby Reindeer,” knew exactly who she wanted to shoot the Netflix series, her friend and frequent collaborator Krzysztof Trojnar. When television science fiction works, it can change us. However, lasting long enough to make an impact is a hell of a trick. "Star Trek," the keystone franchise for multiple generations of fans and scientists, fought for its survival more than once. In the end, the original, larger than life phenomena lasted only three seasons. In a similar vein, "Babylon 5" remains a quieter but no less impactful series for modern science fiction fans, with the "Lord of the Rings" inspired space opera struggling every year since the poorly reviews first season for more time to finish its planned five year arc -- and a reboot from its original creator is still going through similar trials.
The problem is that good science fiction is always experimental, almost always more expensive than dramas or safe sitcoms, and it relies on an audience hanging in long enough for the plot to really hit its stride.

Netflix added nearly 30 million global paid subscribers in 2023, though it might have watered down its hit pool in the process.
According to a new study by British streaming-data company Digital i, Netflix had fewer than half the global hits in 2023 (10) than it had in 2022 (22). Digital i defines a “hit” as an original movie or a series that was watched by at least 30 percent of Netflix’s subscriber base in North America, EU, and Latam.
The long list of 2022 Netflix hits goes like this: “Wednesday” (61.8%), “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” (53.3%), “Stranger Things 4” (48.0%), “The Adam Project” (47.9%), “Knives Out 2” (45.9%), “The Gray Man” (42.4%), “The Watcher” (41.9%), “The Tinder Swindler” (38.0%), “Inventing Anna” (37.5%), “The Sandman” (35.7%), “Senior Year” (35.6%), “1899” (34.7%), “Bridgerton” Season 2 (34.5%), “Troll” (34.0%), “Enola Holmes 2” (33.7%), “Luckiest Girl Alive” (33.4%), “Harry & Meghan” (32.7%), “Hustle” (32.6%), “The Man from Toronto” (31.5%), “Purple Hearts” (31.3%), “Me Time” (31.1%), “Day Shift” (31.0%), and “Falling for Christmas” (30.8%).

Benioff and Weiss shine with successful storytelling, even as Netflix's sci-fi series faces challenges for season 2. Despite early success, 3 Body Problem's hefty budget raises concerns about its long-term profitability for Netflix. The slow-burn show can still bounce back in its second week, with hope for renewed interest and potential for a season 2.
Despite getting favorable reviews, Game of Thrones creators' new Netflix sci-fi series has a major season 2 problem. David Benioff and D. B. Weiss experienced extreme highs of success with the first seven seasons of HBO's Game of Thrones. However, season 8 proved to be a hiccup in their journey as showrunners because of its poor critical reception. However, even though Game of Thrones' final season was not as successful as its predecessors, Benioff and Weiss maintain a good reputation for their ability to perfectly traverse George R. R. Martin's books to the small screen in the HBO show's early seasons.

Apple TV leads in sci-fi content but Netflix's 3 Body Problem may rival its success with high concept storytelling and visual appeal. Despite Apple TV's success with shows like For All Mankind, Netflix's risk with 3 Body Problem's ambitious scope may pay off well. The non-linear storyline of 3 Body Problem and complex scientific concepts could elevate Netflix as a top destination for quality sci-fi.
Apple TV may currently be dominating the sci-fi space by jabbing away at all competition with its compelling television outings in the genre, but Netflix's upcoming adaptation might drop the perfect counter against the streamer. Despite starting with a relatively small catalog of shows and movies, Apple TV has gradually risen in the streaming ranks by establishing itself as the leader of some specific genres. One of these genres is science fiction, in which Apple TV seems to offer something for everyone.

Sebastian Stan, whose “A Different Man” screens in the Berlin Film Festival, Christoph Waltz and Tom Wlaschiha, the “Faceless Man” in “Game of Thrones,” were among the guests at Studio Babelsberg Night, the historic Berlin film studios’ party at Soho House Berlin held to celebrate the 74th edition of the festival. The event was supported by Mexican tequila brand Don Julio, the Motion Picture Assn. and Little Moons. Variety was the media partner.
Among the leading filmmakers welcomed by Babelsberg were Fatih Akin, who won Berlin’s Golden Bear in 2004, Julia von Heinz, whose film “Treasure,” starring Lena Dunham, plays at the Berlinale, and Tom Tykwer, who shot series “Babylon Berlin” at Babelsberg and recently shot feature film “The Light” there.
Christoph Waltz
Other directors and writers at the party included “Dark” creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, who shot Netflix’s “1899” at Babelsberg, Lars Kraume, Detlev Buck and David Wnendt.

Brilliant shows like 1899 and I Am Not Okay With This were canceled after only one season, cutting short their planned storylines. Westworld was planned for five seasons but ended after four, leaving the story in limbo. Shows like Dollhouse and Daredevil had multi-season plans that were scrapped.
TV show cancelations can be devastating when a brilliant show with lots of potential is cut too soon, but it's even worse when the creatives have a plan that never comes to fruition. With so many streaming platforms, networks, and studios constantly bringing out new shows, the studios have to be brutal when it comes to choosing what shows remain, and which get canceled. Just because a show gets good reviews, or has a decent following, sometimes the budget simply can't be justified, or the creative team and the studios disagree on the long-term vision.

Netflix's sci-fi series 1899 was canceled after one season due to low viewing numbers. Despite positive reviews from critics and audiences, 1899 failed to gain the same popularity as Netflix's hit show Dark. In comparison, Wednesday, which premiered around the same time as 1899, was a huge success with 10 times more viewing hours.
Among Netflix's many canceled shows was a promising sci-fi series that was only able to enjoy one season, and there is finally an explanation for its gone-too-soon demise. Over the years, Netflix has invested a lot of money to become an established name as a production company in the entertainment industry, although its initial role was as a distribution and streaming service for other productions. The November streaming slump finally ended during the week of Thanksgiving, as audiences in the U.S. had some extra time to catch up on film and TV.
There were three titles with over 1B minutes viewed from November 20 to 26, as well as two with over 900M. In first place was the Adam Sandler animated Netflix film Leo, which racked up 1.5B minutes viewed and also dominated Netflix’s Top 10 as the streamer’s biggest animated film debut ever.
Squid Game: The Challenge was in second place with 1.4B minutes viewed. Despite all the critiques about the Netflix reality competition series missing the point of its scripted predecessor, audiences’ interests were clearly piqued.

The following contains spoilers for Bodies, now streaming on Netflix.
Netflix's Bodies has many things in common with shows like Dark and 1899, both of which won over fans on the very same streaming service. Bodies possesses that similar mind-bending energy as detectives try to solve the case of a mysterious corpse that appears in four different timelines.
As the time-travel conspiracy unfolds, it creates a revolving period piece. The time-spanning Bodies has a lot of clues to track and temporal strings to monitor.

Warrior Nun and Shadow And Bone, despite having passionate fan bases, were canceled by Netflix, causing viewers to run fan campaigns and question the streaming giant's decision-making process. Netflix has a history of canceling shows with devoted followings, potentially causing subscribers to lose interest in the platform and its new offerings. The frequent cancellations of beloved shows like Warrior Nun and Shadow And Bone are eroding the trust of Netflix subscribers, making them more hesitant to invest time in new television shows on the platform.
Warrior Nun and Shadow And Bone's Netflix cancelation cements one harsh truth about the streaming platform and its future. Netflix's Bodies ends with a major character being alive after seemingly dying in the 1800s. Netflix's Bodies sets up a Season 2 with Mannix's Know You Are Loved cult somehow alive. Netflix's Bodies teases Hasan and the other detectives still have one more case to solve.
The following contains spoilers for Bodies, now streaming on Netflix.
The eight-episode first season of Bodies is quite a mind-bending ride. The series focuses on the same corpse somehow being found in four different time periods, leading to various detectives investigating the temporal case in their eras. As fate would have it, the body belongs to a scientist named Defoe who fell through the timestream as part of a sinister cult's project to control the timeline.
Bodies does seem to wrap the story at the end until the final scene creates something that fans of Netflix's Dark and 1899, or Prime Video's The Devil's Hour would love.

After airing for two seasons starting in 2016, The Oa was cancelled in 2019, sparking a passionate outcry from audiences. Creators Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglif reflect on this period, explaining that The Oa got the green light during a period of wild creative risks for Netflix, but the show got axed as this business mindset evolved and became more conservative. Marling takes issue with Netflix's business model at the time, which couldn't find a way to capitalize on the clear audience love for the show.

The binge-release strategy, once a groundbreaking alternative to the traditional episodic airing approach, has revealed its limitations over the years. While it caters to viewers craving immediate access to entire seasons, promoting deep and immersive engagement, it also introduces unique challenges.
Although Netflix championed this strategy for years, its dominance in streaming releases has waned. In fact, Netflix itself has shifted gears. For instance, new seasons of hit shows like “The Witcher,” “Stranger Things” and “Ozark” now adopt a two-part release schedule.
A significant downside of binge-releasing is the reduced cultural longevity of the series. Traditionally, TV series released episodically would fuel discussions for months, ensuring their sustained cultural relevance. By contrast, binge-releasing often compresses these discussions into a brief window.

Questions (and concerns) about AI will come to the foreground at this year’s Mipcom international co-production and content market, which runs Oct. 16–19 in Cannes. Alongside the thousands of buyers and preeminent audiovisual execs expected to hit the mart, immersive producers, media regulators and legal experts will take the stage for an Oct. 17 “Unlocking AI” summit meant to address ethical concerns and better contextualize those two anxiety-inducing vowels on everyone’s mind.
“We are staging this summit because AI has universal importance in each of the 100 different countries that attend Mipcom,” says event director Lucy Smith. “And we hope our contributors can both demonstrate and demystify [the new technology].”

With the streaming bubble bursting and entertainment companies retooling their vision for the future of television, it seems like every new day yields a polarizing series cancellation. From viewership stats to marketing pitfalls and budgetary concerns, TV series are seeing the plug pulled at a seemingly faster rate than ever before — in some cases, after production has been completed and even before they’ve had a chance to air.
For example, after outcry over recently canned series like “1899,” “First Kill” and “Warrior Nun,” Netflix’s new co-ceos Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters said they have never canceled a “successful show.” Platforms like AMC, Starz, Showtime and HBO Max have pulled shows despite having the majority of filming finished or nearly done so. And for Hulu, journalists and audiences raised disappointment following the cancellation of “Reboot.”

Netflix’s sci-fi drama series 1899 has included many mind-blowing twists and turns. Almost all the eight episodes of the series ended on a cliffhanger which made the series all the more interesting. The only unfortunate part about 1899 is that Netflix has decided there won't be Season 2 despite the huge success that the drama series witnessed. We will definitely miss all the cliffhangers we got to explore while the series aired, and it is a shame that the story won't be continued.
1899 is another gift from the creators of Dark and it wasn't a disappointing one. In 1899, we get to see how the series deals with the idea of reality and what is real and what is not. Cliffhangers are a great idea for TV shows that are definitely coming back, but occasionally a series is canceled before such halted storylines are resolved. Continuing a tradition from film and radio serials, many TV shows have utilized the concept of the cliffhanger, whether it's in an episode to be concluded the following week or a season finale setting up anticipation for the series' return months or even years later. In 1980, the question of "Who killed J.R.?" even took Dallas from a popular primetime soap to event television thanks to its iconic and highly influential season 3 finale cliffhanger. Other great shows have had similarly shocking season-ending cliffhangers.
What if Dallas had been canceled after season 3 and never had the chance to reveal the identity of J.R.'s would-be assassin? While that show and its cliffhanger went down in television history, other series have notoriously been left in a state of limbo,...

Netflix is known as the original streaming platform, but two recent decisions have knocked it from its pedestal. Netflix was founded in 1997, and for years it was known for sending DVDs straight to its subscribers' mailboxes. The company is credited with putting Blockbuster out of business, a situation that is used as an example of what happens when a company can't evolve with the times. However, soon Netflix was delivering original films and movies straight from its online streaming site.
Stranger Things is arguably one of the platform's most popular series, sending the internet into a frenzy when it premiered in 2016. One concern is that when the series comes to an end with season 5, Netflix won't be able to sustain its popularity. With streaming services releasing a dizzying number of shows each year, not all can be successful, and Netflix has canceled multiple original shows in 2023. While Netflix was once considered the leader of original streaming content, the development of new streaming platforms has created more competition. With rising inflation, people are less willing to pay for multiple streaming subscriptions, making it imperative that platforms put out only the best content. Beginning on May 2, the 2023 Writers Guild strike has complicated matters even further, as it has halted TV production and shows no signs of slowing down.
In 2023, Netflix launched a new plan to cut down on password sharing, as they were losing revenue. While the move drew intense backlash, Netflix has seen an increase in subscribers since. Emerging star from Hong Kong, Isabella Wei, headlines Silent D Pictures’ comedy-drama “High Wire.”
The film follows the story of Go-wing, a British-Chinese takeaway girl who discovers her inner strength and artistic bravery when a circus comes to her small English town. As Go-wing navigates the challenges of her dual cultural identity, she finds herself at a crossroads and must decide between conforming to societal expectations or forging her own path towards her dreams. The film pays homage to the first and second generations of Chinese immigrants and their journey to adapt to life in England whilst facing issues of systemic racism and discrimination.
Wei’s breakout performance was in Netflix’s mystery sci-fi series “1899,” where she played the enigmatic Ling Yi, a geisha. Wei is also set to appear in Rupert Sanders’ much anticipated reboot of “The Crow” alongside Bill Skarsgård, Danny Huston and FKA Twigs.
