‘Andor’ Casting Team on Populating Ghorman and Finding Young Kleya
Image
Nina Gold and Martin Ware are no strangers to the “Star Wars” universe, having previously worked on films like “The Rise of Skywalker” and the series “The Acolyte.” And the pair clearly know their U.K. talent — last year they shared the Emmy Award for casting the limited series “Baby Reindeer,” which made sensations out of actors like Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning.

They were brought on to cast the Disney Plus series “Andor,” a prequel of the film “Rogue One,” in its first season — which Gold admits was a challenging experience as the pandemic hit right in the midst of casting. But the second season, which just wrapped an acclaimed run, was “a bit more normal.” It helped that the first season was so well-received and that creator and showrunner Tony Gilroy’s writing was impeccable. “The scripts are so brilliant, actors just love doing it,” reveals Ware. “You...

2025 Tony Awards first-timers club: Half of this year’s acting winners triumphed for their Broadway debuts
Image
The 2025 Tony Awards gave a warm welcome to first-timers tonight by awarding four actors for their Broadway debut. This accounts for half of the ceremony's acting categories — one of the best showings for debut performances this century.

Sarah Snook also portrayed multiple roles to win Lead Actress in a Play for The Picture of Dorian Gray. The Succession star impressively swaps between 26 characters in this adaptation of the Oscar Wilde classic, often acting opposite recorded versions of herself projected onto a giant screen center stage.

Cole Escola became the first nonbinary performer to win the Lead Actor in a Play category for their wild performance in Oh Mary!, which they also wrote. Escola portrays a comically demented version of first lady Mary Todd Lincoln, who craves nothing more than becoming a “rather well-known niche cabaret legend.”

Nicole Scherzinger won Lead Actress in a Musical for Sunset Boulevard in an upset...

The Bodyguard remake moving forward at Warner Bros. with director of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour
Image
And I will alwaaaays remaaaaake yooooou! Deadline reports that Warner Bros. is moving forward with a remake of The Bodyguard, the classic 1992 romantic thriller which starred Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. They have tapped Sam Wrench (Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour) to direct from a script by Jonathan A. Abrams (Juror No. 2).

The original film featured Costner as Frank Farmer, a former Secret Service agent who becomes the bodyguard for Rachel Marron (Houston), an award-winning actress and music superstar. With a dangerous stalker lurking just around the corner, the film brought some serious drama, thrills, and romance. The soundtrack album became the best-selling of all time, which included timeless hits such as I Will Always Love You, I’m Every Woman, Queen of the Night, Run to You, and I Have Nothing.

The Bodyguard was a big success upon release, and Costner even started developing a sequel in which he...

Netflix Canceled This Completed Peyton List Movie
Image
2023 was a dark year for the film industry. Beyond the writers' and actors' strikes, there was the continuation of the disturbing trend by studios and streamers to shelve or sell already completed projects, upsetting fans and all the creative talent behind those titles. The shelving of Batgirl was the first jaw-dropper back in 2022. In 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery added Coyote vs. Acme to that list, as did Netflix with the cancelation of The Inheritance and House/Wife, two completed films with a lot of promise. While it's often said that Netflix has a habit of canceling TV shows with dedicated fan bases, they don't often cancel completely filmed and produced titles, so the news was a bit shocking and discouraging. One year later, though, The Inheritance quietly made its debut elsewhere — on Hulu.

Vertical acquired the distribution rights for a limited theatrical run, but it was Hulu that arguably benefited the most,...

'The Silent Planet' Star & Director Analyze Their Main Character
Image
What if your adoptive parents weren't just from another country, but rather... another world? It's one of several intriguing plot points in director Jeffrey St. Jules' new film The Silent Planet, which is now available on digital. Lead actress Briana Middleton (The Inheritance) plays Niyya, a convicted felon who is sentenced to labor on another planet. It probably doesn't seem that absurd a penalty, given her parents are seemingly from another planet. Yes, Niyya was raised by aliens due to a long-ago tragedy that struck her actual parents' lives. MovieWeb recently spoke with both Middleton and St. Jules in separate interviews to learn more about how they put their heads together to better understand and flesh out the unique lead character — beyond just the words on St. Jules' script pages.

"A lot [of what we did] with her was talking about kind of how she grew up... and what it is about the alien...

HorRHIFFic 2025: ‘Halloween Tales’ Review
Image
Stars: Macarena Gómez, Mario Mayo, Javier Botet, Christian Thomas, David Pareja, Lucía de la Fuente, Carmen del Rosal, Zorion Eguileor | Written and Directed by Kiko Prada

Sometimes when you watch a film you know it’s right up your street from the get-go and that was certainly the case for Halloween Tales. Opening with credits that look like they jumped out of an 80s Italian horror, with a soundtrack that sounds like a homage to John Carpenter, I was hooked immediately.

Halloween Tales, also known under its original title Historias de Halloween, is a horror anthology from Spain that is obviously influenced by the likes of US productions like Creephow (the film uses comics as a framing device like that King-inspired anthology) and, obviously, The Twilight Zone, but – like many Spanish genre fare, also the work of Chicho Ibáñez Serrador.

The wraparound follows Luis (Christian Thomas), a boy whose mother,...

'The Silent Planet' Review | A Cerebral Sci-Fi Thriller
Image
Imagine getting convicted of a crime and sentenced to... life on another planet. And they don't call this new film's planet-in-question "silent" for nothing. Picture a prison sentence of solitary confinement taken to its logical extreme on a planet far, far away. Not that this story has any sort of ties to the ever-evolving Star Wars universe, though sci-fi die-hards might eat up the similarly delicious backdrops captured on location in Canada by writer-director Jeffrey St. Jules (Bang Bang Baby). As he recently told MovieWeb, the substance behind The Silent Planet extends far beyond the picturesque science-fiction nature and crime-mystery edge of the intricate plot he concocted.

The end result is a dreamy, reflective, and thought-provoking feature about coming to terms with our past, coping with never-ending guilt and such other relatable themes. The cerebral feel of the film draws you right in, with the added bonus of two solid performances portraying the dueling protagonists.

To release money from The Inheritance, players must work as a team to complete a series of challenges. Cobra Kai Star's Horror Movie Becomes Streaming Hit After Unnoticed Release in 2024
Image
A 2024 horror film starring Cobra Kai's Peyton List has found recent success on Hulu after its low-key debut earlier this year and rejection by most critics. The Inheritance currently has a 38% Rotten Tomato score.

Netflix announced in January 2023 that it would no longer distribute the horror movie as initially intended, opening the door for Vertical to acquire distribution rights for The Inheritance. Following a limited theatrical run, the film arrived without fanfare on video-on-demand (VOD) on July 12, 2024. The Inheritance, however, made a triumphant return to streaming, having been in and around Hulu's top 10 recently. The film peaked at no. 3 within the platform's top 15 movies earlier this week and has since managed to maintain its place in the top 15. The uptick in the interest the film is garnering from audiences on Hulu is not easily explained, given its 30% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is even worse than its critic score.

Cobra Kai Star’s 2024 Horror Movie Becomes Hit On Streaming Charts, Despite 38% Rt Score
Image
The Cobra Kai cast comes from broad backgrounds. On the one hand, one of the main actors is Ralph Macchio, who plays an adult version of the classic Karate Kid character Daniel Larusso. William Zabka also reprises his role as Johnny Lawrence, bringing back another character from earlier in the Karate Kid franchise. Including these familiar faces makes Cobra Kai seem more connected to the original franchise, and draws in a potentially wider audience of those familiar with the older characters.

At the same time, Cobra Kai's cast also includes younger members alongside the aging stars. This includes actors such as Xolo Maridueña, Jacob Bertrand, Mary Mouser, and Peyton List. List, now 26 years old, has been in the industry since she was a child actor. She played lead character Emma Ross in the Disney Channel TV series Jessie, which started when she was only 13 years old. ‘I was barricading myself with alcohol’: Matthew López on the play that was too scary to stage
Peyton List in The Inheritance (2024)
He has done frothy romcoms and weighty epics such as Tony-winning The Inheritance. Now the US playwright is revisiting the drink-fuelled drama that terrified him as he wrote it

In 2008, the playwright Matthew López had a bright idea: to examine the lives of gay male New Yorkers one generation after the advent of Aids by using Howards End as the scaffolding with which to build a new drama. Perhaps Em Forster himself could even be a character wandering through it. A decade later, the two-part, six-hour-plus epic The Inheritance premiered at the Young Vic in London before transferring to Broadway, vacuuming up prizes along the way including a Tony for best play, which made López the first Latiné writer (his preferred non-gendered term for people of Latin American heritage) to win that award. The consensus was that he had written the greatest theatrical account of gay life since Angels in America.

Valuable Lessons I Learned From Little House on the Prairie

We’re traveling back to the prairie as the charming and cherished series turns 50.

I grew up on Little House on the Prairie with my family and my best friend. It was an important part of my childhood, as we learned invaluable lessons about family love, community, and true friendship.

While the series was a hit in the 1970s and 1980s, not even the cast knew the impact the series would have on audiences 50 years later.

We watched the Ingalls family and their friends experience trials and triumphs together for nine seasons and three movies.

The pilot movie and the first season more closely mirrored Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books, while Michael Landon added creativity and more characters to the later seasons.

Joe Manganiello Says True Blood Cast Was 'Really, Really Overqualified'
Image
True Blood's Joe Manganiello believes the cast, due to its high caliber, was "really overqualified" to feature in the show. The actor played the werewolf Alcide Herveaux on the hit HBO vampire series.

Per Variety, Manganiello, in a recent episode of Podcrushed, reflected that although True Blood was an intelligent show that still had cultural resonance, the quality of actors it attracted was enviable given their talent, training, experience, and extensive rsums. "What's funny about True Blood was, you know, we were all really, really overqualified," he said. "Well, I should say the material was deceptively tricky because it was kind of written in like Tennessee Williams. It was very operatic at times."

Joe Manganiello on Why the Cast of ‘True Blood’ Was “Really, Really Overqualified”
Image
Joe Manganiello is sharing why he thinks the cast of True Blood was way too “overqualified” to be starring in the hit drama fantasy series.

On a recent episode of Podcrushed, with hosts Penn Badgley, Nava Kavelin and Sophie Ansari, the actor, who played Alcide Herveaux, looked back at the “really wild, crazy, intelligent” show that “pushed the culture forward at the time,” as he described it. However, he noted that the series cast actors with extensive résumés.

“What’s funny about True Blood was, you know, we were all really, really overqualified,” Manganiello admitted. “Well, I should say the material was deceptively tricky because it was kind of written in like Tennessee Williams. It was very operatic at times.”

The Inheritance Review: A Clever Genre-Shifting Horror That Holds Itself Back From Greatness

The Inheritance sets up expectations but cleverly shifts gears from mystery to horror. The film takes unexpected turns, but suffers from weak character development and a flawed script. Despite the Victorian-era mansion's set design and cinematography creating a spooky atmosphere, the film's ambition isn't met with stellar execution.

The Inheritance (2024) follows the rich Abernathy family 75-year-old Charles Abernathy invites his family for a birthday celebration and, despite tensions between the Abernathy children, they comply. Once at the grandiose mansion that gives off creepy old money vibes, the grown kids are told there is actually something else they're there for, and that is their substantial inheritance. Someone or something is going to kill Charles tonight, and he puts his entire estate and wealth on the line. If anything happens to him, all of it will be donated.

The Familiar Class Critique of ‘The Inheritance’ [Review]
Image
There’s a mystery at the heart of The Inheritance, the new thriller from director Alejandro Brugués. Or at least that what the screenplay by Joe Russo & Chris Lamont seems to believe.

When the film opens, the estranged adult children of billionaire Charles Abernathy (Bob Gunton) have assembled at the isolated family estate for the first time in two years. There’s severe, business-minded twins Madeline (Rachel Nichols) and C.J. (David Walton) who manage day-to-day operations for the family business, as well as influencer Kami (Peyton List), who hocks her fashion line to followers on social media.

It’s clear that the audience’s sympathies are meant to lie with youngest son Drew (Austin Stowell) and his wife Hannah (Briana Middleton). Not only do they work in philanthropy, but as the sole person of color, Hannah is immediately coded as the outsider, even before Madeline, C.J. and Charles...

2024 Is One Of The Best Years For Horror In My Lifetime
Image
2024 has been a strong year for the horror genre, with several critically acclaimed films released in the first half alone. A wide range of approaches to the genre has left audiences unsettled in the best way possible. Upcoming horror films in the second half of 2024 include Starve Acre, Longlegs, Cuckoo, and more.

The cinematic horror genre has been having one of the best years I've ever seen. 2024 has been full of ups and downs at the box office, with surprising weak performances from seemingly surefire blockbusters like Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and The Fall Guy (that have been finding far better luck with home releases). However, while horror films might not be breaking the box office, there have been several impressive scary films across the first half of 2024 that have earned rave reviews and solid results in theaters.

As a horror fan, I've been ecstatic with this development. The...

Review: The Inheritance is a Middle-of-the-Pack Faustian Tale
Image
Alejandro Brugués returns from “Horror Anthology Land” to direct his first solo feature since 2011’s hilarious zombie comedy Juan of the Dead in this year’s more straightforward-scary The Inheritance. Writing duo Chris Lamont and Joe Russo parallel recent releases like Mike Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher and Radio Silence’s Abigail, whether in greed-driven tones or lockdown confinement. The Inheritance was initially set to be a Netflix Original, but the streaming juggernaut dropped the completed product in early 2023, allowing producers to seek alternate distribution. It’s an odd move that presumes quality concerns, but I’ve seen far worse Netflix horror exclusives — more ambitious, but far less successful. There’s nothing awful about The Inheritance; it’s merely paint-by-numbers generational survival horror.

The film’s original title, The Last Will and Testament of Charles Abernathy, better describes what to expect. Bob Gunton stars as 74-year-old billionaire Charles Abernathy,...

‘The Inheritance’ – New Clip Introduces the Ill-Fated Abernathy Siblings
Alejandro Brugués
The always entertaining Alejandro Brugués (Juan of the Dead, Nightmare Cinema, Pooka Lives!) is back with The Inheritance, and a new clip introduces some of the Abernathy family that’s reuniting just in time for the horror.

Originally titled The Last Will and Testament of Charles Abernathy, Vertical will release The Inheritance in select theaters and on demand July 12, and Bloody Disgusting is debuting the official trailer today. The trailer starts out conventionally enough, with an old billionaire inviting his children to his estate to let them know he doesn’t have much more time left to live.

The horror twist? Something is coming for him at midnight…

In the film, “On the eve of his 75th birthday, billionaire Charles Abernathy invites his estranged children back home out of fear that tonight someone or something is going to kill him. He puts each of their inheritances on the line, to...

‘Prima Facie’ Review: ‘Killing Eve’ Star Jodie Comer In Tour De Force Broadway Debut
Image
Killing Eve star Jodie Comer claims Broadway as her own in her tour de force performance of Prima Facie, a scalding indictment of the law and its limits opening tonight at the Golden Theatre.

Comer plays Tessa, a young, working class Liverpool woman who has become one of London’s most promising defense lawyers through sheer intelligence and needle-sharp courtroom instincts. Her specialty – perhaps, or perhaps not, foisted upon her by the cynical male superiors who run things in ways Tessa only slowly comprehends – is the defense of men charged with sexual assault.

Tessa’s outwardly compassionate, woman-to-woman cross-examinations of assault victims are no less effective for their sympathetic overtones, perhaps more so. Her probing questions and geiger-counter instincts for finding the hidden bombs that will blow a victim’s story to smithereens make Tessa an invaluable force in the courtroom.

Comer

Throughout the early portion of the play, Comer...

Matthew Lopez and Amber Ruffin (‘Some Like it Hot’) on the ‘impossible work’ of writing the book of a musical [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“We’re both rowdy and silly so I think it was pretty clear that you could say whatever you wanted and it would be fine,” says Amber Ruffin of working with writing partner Matthew Lopez on “Some Like it Hot.” “We both have really hard feelings to hurt. So we didn’t really have to do any tiptoeing.” The fast chemistry between the pair allowed them to dive headfirst into writing the book for this new musical, the first time either artist had attempted this type of writing. Though the process was challenging, they had a ball bringing this classic story into a contemporary light. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

“You have to have a thick skin,” says Lopez of musical book writing, “you just can’t be precious about anything.” There is an immense amount of material created for a book, but so much of it winds up...

‘Camelot’ Broadway Review: Aaron Sorkin Leaves The Magic To His Cast
Image
What’s a Camelot without a little magic?

Aaron Sorkin works up an answer to that question in the new Lincoln Center Theater production of the 1960 Lerner & Loewe musical, and the result is an adaptation that seems at every turn to be pleading its case for its own relevance. Where the West Wing creator conjured a real sort of writerly sorcery in 2018 with his transformation of the beloved property To Kill A Mockingbird into a new, relevant and thrilling stage work, his efforts this time around often seem strained in their attempts to drag Camelot into the 21st Century.

In its way, Camelot, at least as we’ve come to know it until now, is, in its stodgy and fitful way, a musical as emblematic of the 1960s as the more obvious generation-defining theatrical statements of the era (“Gimme a head with hair!”). Camelot, with its “might for right” social...

Stephen Sondheim’s Final Musical to Premiere Off-Broadway This Fall
Image
Stephen Sondheim’s final musical will have its world premiere in New York this fall.

The musical, which was formerly known as Square One and is now titled Here We Are, is inspired by two Luis Buñuel films, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Exterminating Angel. Joe Mantello (Wicked, Assassins) directs the musical, which features a book by David Ives.

Performances will begin in September for a strictly limited engagement off-Broadway at The Shed’s Griffin Theater.

Sondheim, who died in November 2021 at the age of 91, had been working on this project for years. A production of a musical, created by Ives and Sondheim, was set to premiere off-Broadway at The Public Theater in 2017, but never made it to the stage.

In September 2021, the legendary composer told Stephen Colbert that he was writing Square One with Ives and hoped to stage it in the next season. In what...
