New Girl is moving out of Netflix this April.

After nearly 10 years on the platform, all seven seasons of the Zooey Deschanel-starring Fox comedy are exiting the platform on Sunday.

But fans will soon be able to reunite with Deschanel’s Jess, Nick (Jake Johnson), Schmidt (Max Greenfield), Winston (Lamorne Morris) and more on April 17 when New Girl starts streaming on Hulu and Peacock.

Later in the month, Netflix subscribers will lose access to Alex Gibney’s Julian Assange documentary We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks and Bill Nye: Science Guy, which follows the beloved children’s television host as he takes on the anti-science movement, including those who deny climate change and evolution.

By the end of the month, several movies will leave Netflix, including Leap Year, Road to Perdition and action films Den of Thieves and Empire State.

It’s time to binge as much “New Girl” as possible on Netflix before the beloved Fox sitcom leaves the streaming service. It’s one of a handful of shows and movies due to leave Netflix this month. The binge-worthy TV series leaves Netflix on April 9, while the comedy series “The It Crowd” departs on April 25 and “Ash vs. Evil Dead” exits on April 28.

Four weeks ago, it was officially announced that Renny Harlin (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master) is directing not only a remake of the 2008 film The Strangers, but an entire remake trilogy. The first installment in that trilogy is currently filming in Slovakia, with Madelaine Petsch (Riverdale) in the lead role… and Deadline reports that Petsch is joined in the cast by Ema Horvath.

Horvath may be best known for playing Eärien in the Amazon series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, but she has mainly worked in the horror genre up to this point. Her previous credits include Like.Share.Follow., The Gallows Act II, The Mortuary Collection, and What Lies Below.

Exclusive: Ema Horvath (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) has been tapped to star alongside Madelaine Petsch, Froy Gutierrez and Gabriel Basso in Lionsgate’s remake of the 2008 horror The Strangers, which is in production in Slovakia.

The original film, written and directed by Bryan Bertino, starred Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as a couple contending with a terrifying home invasion. It registered as a sleeper hit upon its May 2008 release via Universal Pictures and came to be appreciated in the years following as a cult classic, with the sequel The Strangers: Prey at Night being released in March 2018.

Landing On VOD in late 2020 during the pandemic, What Lies Below failed to make much of a splash with audiences. But its Netflix debut has been a different story, as the horror thriller about a Merman has topped the streaming charts. The movie, which was written and directed by Braden R. Duemmler, has become somewhat of a Netflix phenomenon as it became the app's #1 watched new release. But many have been left baffled by the ending, which some audience members have found quite confusing. Warning, there are spoilers ahead in case you haven't watched What Lies Below just yet.

So what is going on with that ending? The movie follows a socially awkward 16-year-old who meets her mother's fiancé, a man whose charm, intelligence and beauty seems too perfect to be human. Which it is. As the thriller plays out, it becomes obvious that the man in question is a fish monster.

“Raya and the Last Dragon,” which grossed $32 million for its first month in theaters, made a strong general-public premium VOD debut. Everyone can now buy it at $29.99; previously, only Disney+ subscribers had the privilege with the same upcharge. The animated film took the top spot at FandangoNow as well as AppleTV which ranks by purchase volume.

“Black Widow” and “Cruella” are expected to follow suit in the coming months, but Disney+ availability looks a lot less threatening after the box-office success of “Godzilla vs. Kong,” which grossed $48.5 million — over 9 million tickets sold — even while available on HBO Max. In Canada, where most theaters are not yet open, it took in around $3 million U.S. as a PVOD offering.

Netflix is the king of the streaming world until proven otherwise. But in recent months the streamer’s lists of new releases have looked relatively sparse as competing media conglomerates remove their titles from Netflix’s library. With its list of new releases for April 2021, however, Netflix appears to have its original production machine operating at high capacity once again.

There are plenty of intriguing Netflix original series and films this month. The one that appears to have the highest blockbuster potential though is the series Shadow and Bone on April 23. Shadow and Bone is adapted from Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha-verse trilogy and should bring another compelling sci-fi/fantasy universe to the streaming world.

With the familial sci-fi horror film now on VOD and Digital from Vertical Entertainment, we caught up with writer/Braden R. Duemmler to discuss the extensive research he did prior to writing the script for What Lies Below, filming in Upstate New York, and working with a talented cast that includes Mena Suvari, Ema Horvath, and Trey Tucker.
