2006’s The Barbie Diaries was one of my favorite Barbie movies ever, despite being derivative of everything of the era, especially Mean Girls. Look, the premise is madly intriguing, and that’s also why it’s a difficult film to make. I found myself circling back to the idea of a “wholesome” slasher, a “feel good” horror. Netflix mixes it up this Halloween season with Time Cut, a new horror sci-fi movie that celebrates the bonds of sisterhood. Directed by Hannah Macpherson and co-written by her and Michael Kennedy, the film centers on Lucy Field (played by Outer Banks star Madison Bailey), a teenager in 2024 who discovers a time machine that takes her back to 2003, when the sister she never met was last alive. Summer is a popular high schooler in the early aughts with no idea that a serial killer is about to end her life unless her baby sister saves her.

Bailey and Gentry both come from hit Netflix shows, and Time Cut gives them the opportunity to join forces and expand their current repertoire. The new movie not only blends genres, it also makes excellent use of 2000s music and fashion to paint a unique picture as Lucy and Summer try to outsmart and outlast their tormenter.

Netflix has shared the official trailer, posters, and photos for Time Cut, an upcoming sci-fi slasher film directed by Hannah Macpherson, who co-wrote the script with Michael Kennedy. Kennedy wrote the story.

In Time Cut, Madison Bailey plays a teenage girl who travels back to the early 2000s to stop a vicious killer from murdering her sister, played by Antonia Gentry. The movie will be available to stream on October 30, just in time for Halloween.

A new sci-fi slasher horror outing from Netflix could make for the perfect viewing this spooky season. The streaming giant has now announced that the horror flick, titled Time Cut, will land on the platform just in time for Halloween on October 30, 2024, with the story mashing together the time travel shenanigans of Back to the Future with the slasher frights of Scream for a terrifying, timey-wimey delight.

Hulu's A Court of Thorns and Roses TV show is quietly in development, and arguably the hardest character casting to get right will be Tamlin. A Court of Thorns and Roses follows the story of Feyre, a human huntress who accidentally kills a Fae one day while out hunting and is taken over the Wall that separates human and Fae as payment for her kill.

Eastern Grace Film, a new production company that teased its debut production “The Sand Murmurs” earlier this month, has gone one step further. It used the Shanghai International Film Festival to unveil a slate of nine new film productions.

The company is an indirect subsidiary of Baination Pictures, a Beijing-based film and TV group that is listed on the Shenzhen stock exchange. Eastern Grace is headed by president Wilson Jiang, a veteran film distributor in China.

Jiang pitched the company as a diversified operation that spans film investment, production and promotion operating at the top end of the Chinese industry. In addition to the conventional systems of production and exploitation, Eastern Grace aims to generate short films and stage plays that are derived from its portfolio movies. New media revenue will also be pursued in the VR, metaverse and virtual image categories. Some of these initiatives will be achieved in partnership with other companies.

Reports about who may play Clark Kent and Lois Lane in Superman: Legacy have garnered a reaction from writer-director James Gunn.

On Twitter, Gunn tweeted, "For all of you asking, I would never comment on who is or isn’t Auditioning for a role. That’s the actor’s business only & isn’t something I’d make public unless they did it first after the fact (like [Glenn Howerton] or [ZacharyLevi] having auditioned for Star-Lord & being top choices). For now, only one person has been Cast in Superman: Legacy, and it isn’t any of the regular players in the Superman world."

DC Studios co-ceo and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer-director James Gunn confirms one cast member from the Marvel Cinematic Universe film will be in Superman: Legacy.

Like Vol. 3, Gunn is both writing and directing Superman: Legacy. The film will recast Superman and is set to be the first film in Gunn and co-ceo Peter Safran's revamped DC Universe. On Twitter May 6, Gunn did a Q&a with fans, several of whom asked if any Guardians actors will appear in the Dcu. One fan tweeted at Gunn, "Will any cast member for Gotg be in Superman Legacy?" to which Gunn responded, "Yes."

Steve Zahn is set to join Danny McBride and John Goodman in the cast of HBO’s “The Righteous Gemstones” when the comedy returns for its third season, an individual with knowledge of the series told TheWrap.

Zahn, who has earned Emmy buzz for his work on another recent HBO show “The White Lotus,” will play Peter, a militia leader. Production starts this month.

McBride created the show in which he also stars alongside Goodman, Edi Patterson and Adam Devine. The show concluded its second season in February and it was picked up for a third season back in January.

McG, who has been busy producing movies for Netflix, returned to broadcast television this season with three pilots on three different networks for his Wonderland Sound and Vision banner, True Lies, based on James Cameron’s 1994 movie, on CBS; Not Dead Yet starring Gina Rodriguez on ABC; and the Jensen Ackles-produced Supernatural prequel The Winchesters on the CW. Over the last couple of days, all three were picked up to series. Additionally, BET+ just picked up Wonderland’s series Average Joe, created by Robb Cullen and starring Deon Cole.

The slate of four series on the air harkens back to Wonderland’s most prolific time in television a decade ago when the company also had four series with Supernatural, Nikita, Chuck and Human Target. The company’s executive team includes McG’s longtime partner, Mary Viola, who serves as President, and EVP Corey Marsh.

Jo Koy’s ABC comedy pilot “Josep” is filling out its cast with three new series regulars.

Kimee Balmilero, Tess Paras and Jason Rogel have been added to the series, which stars Koy as Jo, a divorced Filipino American father navigating dating, his career as a nurse and his complicated relationship with his mother.

Balmilero will play Geraldine, Koy’s married sister who runs a Filipino restaurant with her white husband. Paras plays Cheryl, Jo’s ex-wife and mother to his son Miles. Rogel plays Will, a pharmacist and Jo’s childhood best friend.

Balmilero is best known for her work on procedurals “Hawaii Five-o” and “Magnum Pi,” both of which saw her play medical examiner Dr. Noelani Cunha. Kimee Balmilero, Tess Paras and Jason Rogel are the latest additions to ABC’s Filipino American pilot Josep, starring Jo Koy. They join the pilot as series regulars and will appear opposite previously announced cast members Mia Katigbak, Rory O’Malley and Kaden Alejandro.

Josep, from 20th Television, follows Koy as a recently divorced Filipino American nurse attempting to navigate dating, fatherhood and a very Filipino mother who loves to “help.”

Balmilero plays Geraldine. Wearing hipster glasses and pink highlights, Geri is Jo’s married sister. She runs a Filipino restaurant with her husband Seth (who is white but adores Filipino culture), and she’s a relentless self-promoter. The legacy of the late Ivan Reitman lives on with “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” (Sony/$5.99) for which he was the sole producer, repeated at #1 on all VOD charts this week. Its recent reduced price sustained a successful multi-platform run ($200 million theatrical worldwide) for a $75 million production.

The film was directed by his son and reflects a return to box office form for both. Reitman père had more than 20 projects in varying stages of development. “Afterlife” showed he remained vital in comedy, a genre that gets short shrift in theaters today.

VOD charts showed little change this week, including any impact from last Tuesday’s Oscar nominations. “Dune” (Warner Bros./$5.99) rose from last week, taking two #2 slots and placing on all three. The only other films among the top contenders to appear are “King Richard” (Warner Bros./$19.99), which is #7 at Vudu, and “Belfast” (Focus/$19.99), #10 at iTunes.

ABC has ordered the pilot for “Not Dead Yet,” a single-camera comedy from writing duo Casey Johnson and David Windsor, executive produced by McG.

“Not Dead Yet” follows 40-something Nell Stevens, who is down on her luck, low on cash and newly single. When she lands the only job she can find, writing obituaries, she starts receiving life advice from an unlikely source. The pilot is based on Alexandra Potter’s romantic comedy novel “Confessions of a Forty-Something F—k Up.”

Mary Viola and Corey Marsh also executive produce under McG’s Wonderland Sound and Vision banner. 20th Television is the studio.

Ah, "Tall Girl," the much-discussed Netflix coming-of-age film that sounds like a fake movie from "30 Rock."
