Is there room for two shows about murders inside a building at the Emmys? Netflix's The Residence stars Uzo Aduba as Cordelia Cupp, the world's greatest detective who's called to solve a murder at the White House. The murder mystery premiered on Thursday with all eight episodes and is entering in comedy at the Emmys. So which categories does it stand the best shot at cracking?
Best Comedy Actress
Aduba could wind up with the only Emmy nomination for The Residence and no one would be shocked. An Emmy darling, she's a five-time nominee with three wins, two for Orange Is the New Black and one for Mrs. America (Best Limited/TV Movie Supporting Actress in 2020). The Orange Is the New Black victories made her the second person after Ed Asner to win comedy and drama Emmys for the same role. She's currently in ninth place in the Gold Derby odds,...

In 2012, Uzo Aduba came to Netflix a complete unknown. The role on the streamer’s Orange Is The New Black made her a star and a two-time Emmy winner. (She has since won a third Emmy for the FX limited series Mrs. America.)
In her first ongoing series since Oitnb, Aduba headlines Netflix’s murder mystery The Residence which, like Oitnb, mixes comedy and drama.
“It feels like a homecoming, in some ways, coming back to Netflix on a series — the only place I’ve done a series — which is so amazing,” Aduba told Deadline in a joint interview with co-star Randall Park, clips from which you can watch throughout the post. “And to come back to another show that is top notch, by my opinion anyway, that...

There’s no CGI at Lumon, or at least not for that eye-popping one shot that has audiences in a tizzy.
“Severance” cinematographer Jessica Lee Gagné, who made her directorial debut with Episode 7, confirmed to Esquire that there was no CGI used in a particular sequence that jumps from the office setting with Mark (Adam Scott) to the basement floor. The scene in question can be watched here.
Gagné explained that a custom cable was built for the one-shot movement.
“There’s a shot that goes from Mdr to the control room downstairs. There’s no CGI in it. It’s all real,” Gagné said. “We actually shot through cables. It was the most laborious thing I have ever done as a Dp. It was the biggest side project of this show and so many people participated on it.”

As the industry grapples with immense fracture, loss and uncertainty, Uzo Aduba had nothing but words of hope and promise when she took the stage to receive The Hollywood Reporter’s Trailblazer Award on Feb. 6 at SCADTVfest.
“We are told that our differences divide us, creating a separation based on idealistic standards,” Aduba said to a packed house of students and local fans inside the 600-plus seat SCADshow Theater in Atlanta. “But I’m here to tell you our differences are not weaknesses but strengths. The richness of our stories, the diversity of our characters, the power of our art — all of it comes from embracing what makes us unique. … You bring your superpower, value, and uniqueness to the table. Don’t let anyone tell you differently. Anything is possible, and the journey is never over. There is no limit or expiration date for dreams.”

“It’s always so amazing to have the work be recognized,” shares Kris Bowers about his Golden Globe nomination for his score for “The Wild Robot.” The acknowledgement is especially meaningful for him because “everyone that worked on the film made their art from such a deeply personal place and such a place of love and excitement and curiosity.” “We really created a familial bond making this film,” reflects the composer. His score has since gone on to earn a Critics Choice nomination as well. Watch our complete video interview above.
Bowers was brought onto the animated film early by Universal Pictures because the team “knew that music was going to be such a big character” in the movie. The composer was introduced to the story about the robot Roz through the source material, saying, “I was immediately taken by Peter Brown’s novel because I had just become a dad.

The ending of Netflix’s The Watcher has proved divisive, yet the series' ambiguous coda has a hidden secret meaning. The Watcher is a Ryan Murphy miniseries loosely based on the true story of 657 Boulevard in Westfield, New Jersey. Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale play the fictionalized couple Nora and Dean Braddock, who move into a new home with their family and then begin receiving anonymous threatening letters warning them against making any alterations to the house.
The Watcher takes many major liberties with its real-life inspiration. Most of the story depicted on screen is fiction, outside the mysterious letters, the location of the house, and the paranoia and trauma that they caused for the couple involved. After seemingly revealing that the titular threat is Theodora (Noma Dumezweni), a private investigator whom the Braddocks have hired, the series finale of The Watcher ends without ever revealing the true identity of the letter-writer.

The continuing fallout over Camerimage CEO Marek Zydowicz’s Cinematography Today column has forced the festival into damage control. A hastily assembled panel November 19 took on diversity and inclusion in the movie industry, a sore subject when only an estimated seven percent of cinematographers are women.
Moderated by Anna Higgs, a producer and Chair of the Film Committee at BAFTA, the Widening the Lens: Inclusion and Excellence in Our Industry panel held at the Toruń, Poland gathering featured several festival guests: Actor and producer Cate Blanchett; costume designer Sandy Powell; director of photography Mandy Walker; director of photography and, with “Pedro Páramo,” director Rodrigo Prieto; director of photography and British Society of Cinematographers president Chris Ross; and director Maura Delpero (“Vermiglio”).
Higgs insisted they weren’t there to discuss Zydowicz’s words. But she added immediately, “The idea that inclusion dilutes excellence is not up for debate.”

Turn a true auteur like Alfonso Cuarn loose on his first major TV project, and its no surprise audiences are eating up his Apple TV+ series Disclaimer. A slow burn of a show combining mystery, psychological thrills, and a complicated narrative, the five-time Oscar-winning director keeps ratcheting up the secrets and lies throughout. Disclaimer's all-star cast includes Cate Blanchett as journalist Catherine Ravenscroft, who learns shes the lead character in a new book that somehow exposes the darkest deed of her past.
As highlighted in the reviews for Disclaimer, the show plays with viewer expectations throughout, mixing truth and perception into a time-hopping story that doesnt reveal all of its cards until its final episode. Disclaimer cleverly dices up how personal biases, murky pasts, and even the modern media landscape shape how people view their own reality. There are nine legendary stars who only need a Grammy to achieve the Egot grand slam of show business awards: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony (see the gallery at the bottom of this post). None of them were on the list of 2025 Grammy nominees, though, when they were announced on Friday morning, but there is a nominee this year who could get three quarters of the way there if he wins: composer Kris Bowers.
Bowers is nominated for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for his work on the movie musical adaptation of “The Color Purple.” It’s the third nomination for the composer, who previously contended for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella for “Blue Skies” in 2020 and then in the score soundtrack race in 2022 for the Netflix series “Bridgerton.” A victory this year for “Color Purple” would put him just a Tony away from achieving Egot status.

No one films the ocean as a proxy for emotional extremes like Alfonso Cuarón. In films like “Children of Men,” “Gravity” and “Roma,” the Mexican director — often in conjunction with Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki — makes roiling waves a metaphor for everything from rebirth to safety to cathartic release. In this respect, the new Apple TV+ series “Disclaimer,” which Cuarón wrote and directed in its entirety, is a perfect fit for the “Y tu mamá también” auteur. “Disclaimer” centers on competing accounts of a young man’s fatal drowning on an Italian beach, and you can bet your bottom lira there are numerous and lengthy scenes built around the rhythmic crash of water.
But Cuarón is a much less intuitive match for other aspects of “Disclaimer,” which he adapted from Renée Knight’s 2015 novel of the same name. “Disclaimer” is, at its core, a talky, interpersonal drama about grief, self-deception and storytelling,...

A quarter century after winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Girl, Interrupted,” Angelina Jolie is hoping to pick up the Best Actress trophy for her performance in “Maria.” In terms of Oscar history, she’d join Meryl Streep, Jessica Lange, Cate Blanchett, and Renée Zellweger, who all won for featured performances before prevailing again for star turns.
Jolie’s role, that of real-life opera singer Maria Callas, has already been proven to be awards-worthy and won Jane Seymour an Emmy nearly four decades ago. This English rose featured in the 1988 TV movie “Onassis: The Richest Man in the World,” opposite Raul Julia as Aristotle Onassis and Anthony Quinn as his father, Socrates. This remains her only Emmy win from five nominations.

There won’t be more seasons of Rebecca Hall BBC series “The Listeners,” says director Janicza Bravo. But don’t worry – it’s a good thing.

Exclusive: Rebecca Hall has revealed how she got into the character of a woman who hears a constant, low humming sound in BBC series The Listeners.
Adapted from the Jordan Tannahill novel, Hall plays English teacher Claire, tormented by the sound and desperate to make it stop.
Speaking to Deadline on the eve of TIFF, where it is world premiering, Hall said she developed a trick to help her get into character.
“What was helpful was we were shooting on film,” said the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire star. “Digital is silent but with film you can hear the sound of the whir. Sooner or later I latched onto that as my hum. It was comfortable and helped me be where I needed to be.”
After a while, Hall said “it became the thing of the character, I knew it was there and it was a sort of companion.

How do you picture yourself saying "I'll be right there"? Maybe it's super casual because, well, most things can wait. Or perhaps it's the polar opposite, and you're saying it with utter turmoil because the person to whom you're speaking is under the impression that, no, it cannot wait. The latter is typically the case for aging mom and soon-to-be grandma Wanda, played to reliable perfection by Emmy winner Edie Falco (Avatar: The Way of Water).
Directed by Brendan Walsh (reteaming with Falco after a handful of Nurse Jackie episodes they did together) and written by Jim Beggarly, I'll Be Right There benefits from the same sort of razor-sharp wit Falco brought to her Sopranos role of Carmela, plus a handful of other elements such as the stellar cast alongside Falco for her wryly funny new indie feature.

“The Lord of the Rings” is the most successful film series in the history of the Academy Awards, winning 17 Oscars including two Best Picture awards out of 30 total nominations.
Both “The Fellowship of the Ring” and “The Return of the King” won Best Picture while Peter Jackson won Best Director for the latter movie, which holds the joint record for most Oscar wins of all time with 11 victories (the same number as “Ben-Hur” and “Titanic”). However, the lauded trilogy only received one acting citation — that was for Ian McKellen for Best Supporting Actor for “The Fellowship of the Ring.”
But while the Oscars didn’t nominate nearly enough actors in this trilogy (shout out to Andy Serkis), “The Lord of the Rings” cast is full of incredible actors who have received multiple awards nominations for other projects. Considering it is Emmys season, we’re going to focus on Emmys.

“We did 11 hours to Munich, two hours to Milan, and then a two-hour drive,” veteran producer Stacey Sher explained this afternoon as she sat weary-eyed in a glass hotel suite at the Locarno Film Festival.
There are no direct flights from Los Angeles to the quaint Swiss town where Sher will be the guest of honor as she receives the festival’s Raimondo Rezzonico Award for career achievement.
Best known as one of the enduring names of American independent cinema, Sher’s credits include 90s classics such as Pulp Fiction (1994), Get Shorty (1995), Matilda (1996), Gattaca (1997), and Out of Sight (1998). She has also produced series like Reno 911! and the Emmy award-winning Mrs. America (2020). In 2021, she produced the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony alongside Steven Soderbergh.

FX, which stands for Fox Extended, was established by Fox in 1994. A basic cable channel described in its early years as “the little network of NASCAR and Fear Factor repeats,” it began to show the promise of being something more with the 2002 launch of its first original drama, The Shield, for which Michael Chiklis earned the first major Emmy nomination and win for a basic cabler that year. Two years later, John Landgraf, an exec at NBC during its “Must-See TV” epoch, was hired as FX’s head of original programming and began backing shows like Damages, Justified, Louie, The Americans and Atlanta, which made it basic cable’s premier network — the place for premium original programming for adult viewers — with a reach of 99 million households at its 2011 height.

Gillian Anderson was once the face of TV thanks to her role as Dana Scully in “The X-Files.” That show awarded her some healthy, consistent Emmy attention (more on that later) before she underwent a bit of a break from that awards applause for a while. However, Netflix’s “The Crown” gave her career something of a second wind and that Andernaissance (sorry) has continued here with “Scoop.”
Like “The Crown,” Anderson excels here portraying a real-life person in a true story concerning the royal family. While she played Margaret Thatcher in “The Crown,” she takes on the role of presenter and journalist Emily Maitlis in Netflix’s “Scoop.” This TV movie documents the behind-the-scenes story of how producer Samantha McAlister (Billie Piper) secured the “scoop of the decade” and landed that interview with Prince Andrew (Rufus Sewell).

“Feud: Bette and Joan” took the Emmys by storm in 2017, with the first season of the Ryan Murphy anthology show receiving rave reviews for its depiction of the rivalry between actresses Bette Davis (Susan Sarandon) and Joan Crawford (Jessica Lange).
Season two will hope to match that Emmy success (more on that later) with its portrayal of Truman Capote (Tom Hollander) and his falling out with a group of New York high society socialites known as the Swans. Capote wrote a fictionalized account of the Swans’ dramatic lives, leading to the Swans vowing revenge for betraying their confidence.

Hulu’s “Under the Bridge” could be the next big hit in the Best Limited Series category at this year’s Emmys, as this is a category that loves true crime miniseries. This one documents the harrowing murder of Reene Virk as police officers try to solve the case and a writer (Rebecca Godfrey) is drawn into the hidden world of those accused of murdering Virk. The series is based on Godfrey’s own book of the same name with “Daisy Jones & the Six” star Riley Keough, who also produces, portraying her. Meanwhile, “Killers of the Flower Moon” Best Actress Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone features as the police officer investigating the case.
This eight-episode miniseries, like any true crime series, is a tough watch at times but that makes it all the more vital. Meanwhile, the performances of Keough, Gladstone, and the teen-centric cast are all exquisite, as noted by critics.

Few would argue against the idea that Cate Blanchett is one of the great actresses of her generation. The sheer versatility she has displayed in her performances on film has especially made her one of the world’s most sought-after screen stars over the past three decades. For 2022, she received her eighth career Oscar nomination for “Tar.”
In 2021, in the span of just a few weeks, she displayed her signature multi-talent: For Adam McKay’s “Don’t Look Up,” Blanchett turned herself into a cable news host in the vein of Megyn Kelly or Mika Brzezinski to score major laughs in the biting comedy; for Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley,” Blanchett transformed into a 1940s femme fatale who gets one over on an overconfident con man (Bradley Cooper).
Blanchett has two Academy Awards wins for “The Aviator” (2004) and “Blue Jasmine” (2013), prevailing as a supporting actress the first time and then as a lead.
