Found Footage Horror Hit 'Antrum' Is Streaming on Shudder This February
Image
If you have a Shudder (or AMC+) subscription, you will have the chance to see a very special film next month. If you dare. The platform, known for its huge catalog of horror movies of every kind, will include a 2018 found footage film in its catalog. The name? Antrum, or as some have labeled it, Antrum: The Deadliest Film Ever Made which is due to land on the streamer on February 24. Antrum is a two-part independent movie that was the passion project of filmmakers David Amito and Michael Laicini. They set out to produce a horror mockumentary about watching a movie that would kill you after you'd seen it. The result was a small film that sailed across the festival circuit in 2018 and drew the attention of everyone who saw it. Eventually, the directors signed a distribution deal that put the film on streaming platforms in 2020, and, at one stage,...

Deadly Tapes and Haunted Mirrors: Six of the Scariest Cursed Objects in Horror
Image
I’ve been fascinated with cursed objects ever since my mom first scared me with stories about those paintings of crying children that would supposedly survive raging fires while the house around them burned. Despite later learning that most of these yarns are nothing more than urban legends, I still find myself oddly attracted to tales about evil taking on a more abstract shape.

And in honor of Damian Mc Carthy’s Oddity taking the idea of cursed objects to the next level as the film unleashes horrors from its protagonist’s cabinet of curiosities, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the spookiest cursed objects in horror media.

For the purposes of this list, we’ll be avoiding haunted dolls like Chucky and Annabelle, as I think the article will be much more entertaining if we focus on non-humanoid objects that pose more of an abstract threat.

Every Death That Happened After Watching Antrum
Image
Antrum: The Deadliest Film Ever Made is a movie that includes both documentary and feature-style sections, with the feature-film segments allegedly cursed and responsible for causing deaths. The film tells the story of a supernatural forest that two siblings wander into, with Antrum appearing mysteriously at several film festivals in 1979 and leading to the deaths of several festival managers and workers. Despite the film's reputation and supposed curse, the events described in the mockumentary and the deaths portrayed in Antrum are not true. However, the deliberate blurring of reality and fiction was done to create a truly scary and immersive experience for audiences.

The Canadian horror movie Antrum: The Deadliest Film Ever Made. Antrum includes both documentary and feature-style sections from an allegedely cursed movie. The fake film segments of the Antrum movie are allegedly cursed, with the many deaths they've caused the subject of the wider film. Antrum begins...

‘Do Not Watch’ Review – An Innovative Reinvention of the Found Footage Format
Image
Justin Janowitz’s spellbinding feature debut, Do Not Watch, follows the tradition of cursed footage like 2018’s Antrum or 2022’s Incantation. Subliminal messages are baked into Ryan Toyama’s screenplay and imprinted onto the screen. Traditional barriers between screens and their audiences are shattered; characters plead with us to do what the title commends. Do Not Watch isn’t without shortcomings, but tantalizes as an innovative reinvention of found footage capabilities.

Toyama’s screenplay bounces between multiple timelines infected by the same film canister. An introductory info dump reads: “What you are about to witness is a compilation of the events surrounding the disappearance of a post-production crew as they worked on research footage from the 1980s.” Clips cycle around the mentioned post-production crew who works at Illusion Post, the supposed cursed footage of researchers in a bunker from the ‘80s, and the documentarians trying to unearth the truth about...

The 2018 Horror Movie That Pretended To Be A Long Lost (And Cursed) Film
Image
For as long as horror movies have existed, there have been carny-like marketing campaigns boasting audience members fainting, vomiting, running out of theaters in terror, and in some of the most extreme cases, having a heart attack. Films like "Psycho," "The Exorcist," and even 2023's "Talk To Me" have all become modern urban legends with the reported reactions from fans, but few films come close to the reputation of "Antrum." The Canuxploitation film from David Amito and Michael Laicini is two films in one: a documentary about "Antrum," a lost film from the 1970s that has been connected with over 85 deaths, and the remaining footage from the only known print of the film. Before the film plays, a warning covers the screen.

Legal Notice: By continuing to watch this film you agree that the producers of this film have made you aware of the history and danger(s) associated with 'Antrum.

‘Antrum’ and Beyond: Six of the Scariest Cursed Films in Horror
Image
From the notorious play in Robert W. Chambers’ The King in Yellow all the way up to Sadako’s viral videotape, horror writers have been fascinated with cursed media since time immemorial. After all, the idea that a piece of art can be powerful enough to affect the real world is a compelling thought in and of itself, especially when you consider that this also applies to works of evil.

That’s why it makes sense that there are so many scary movies about curses that spread through paintings, music and even video games. However, as a lifelong cinephile, I’ve always been fascinated by meta horror stories that explore the consequences of cursed films. With that in mind, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the scariest cursed films in horror, as movies don’t necessarily have to be real in order to scare you.

Screambox Hidden Gems – 5 Horror Movies You Should Stream Tonight
Image
The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.

The Barn

Before The Barn Part II streams exclusively on Screambox on May 26, catch up on the 2016 original. The Barn stands out among the glut of ’80s slasher throwbacks because it’s not satirical or a send-up; the unapologetic love letter approaches the well-trodden material with a refreshing earnestness. Capturing not only the style but also the spirit of his influences, writer-director Justin M. Seaman taps directly into horror fans’ nostalgia while introducing an imaginative mythology with ample heart in a charming package.

At its core, the film is a coming of age tale about a teenager who doesn’t want to grow...

Seventeen years after the original, and four years since the last film in the franchise, Evil Bong 777, Evil Bong 888: Infinity High brings the saga of EeBee to a close. At least that’s what director and Full Moon head honcho, Charles Band is saying now, but as we all knew, he’s never met a sequel he didn’t like.

Top 5: Cursed Films
Image
The recent Top 5 on our picks of the Most Extreme Films went down rather well with you, our Nerdly audience, so we thought we’d bring you another Top 5 – this time looking at the Top 5 Cursed Films… in no particular order may I add! Check out the list below and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Opera Mortem

Written and directed by English painter David Fleas, Opera Mortem was apparently filmed over almost 10 years, in super-8 mm and VHS no less, and screened only one time in the 1973 at the Nottingham’s Odeon Film Theatre. Described as weird, trippy, filled with graphic blood, sex, and black magical ritualistic symbols, Opera Mortem – and its 1973 screening – are “believed” to be cursed; with reports of fires in projection booths, people dying after seeing it, riots… you name it, Opera Mortem reportedly caused it. Undoubtedly due to all the satanic symoblism within it!

Film Review: Warning: Do Not Play! (2019) by Kim Jin-won
Image
The subject of the cursed movie or film in horror cinema is a rather played out and frequent trope in modern cinema, with everything from “Cigarette Burns,” “Porno” and “Antrum: The Deadliest Film Ever Made” to name a few of the films utilizing the concept. This lack of originality extends to the rest of director Kim Jin-won’s competently-made if overall generic Amjeon, now available on Shudder.

Working on her thesis project in film school, Mi-jung (Seo Ye-ji) decides to transfer the focus onto a new horror film when one of her classmates informs her about a cursed movie shot by a legacy student. Informed about what happened to the original director and crew that shot the movie, she and her friend Joon-seo (Ji Yoon-ho) begin to investigate the legacy of the tape and discover the truth involving what happened to Jae-hyun (Jin Seon-kyu), the director and...

Antrum review – creepy 'cursed film' mockumentary emanates eerie power
Nicole Tompkins and Rowan Smyth in L'Antre - Le Film le plus meurtrier jamais réalisé (2018)
Enterprising film expertly conjures up a supposedly bewitched Bulgarian horror that has killed all those who have watched it

You probably haven’t heard of Antrum, such is the dread and secrecy that surrounds this “cursed film”. And that’s for your own good. Antrum was made in the late 70s and implicated in the mysterious deaths of several film festival programmers and foolhardy horror fans. Now, though, some documentarians have dug up a copy at an estate sale and are sharing it with anyone brave enough to watch.

Or so goes the framing narrative of this part-found-footage-part-mockumentary horror. It would be wonderful to stumble across Antrum with little prior knowledge, in a FrightFest-style festival screening, perhaps, or as a midnight movie in your local cinema: remember back when The Blair Witch Project was still a “true story”? Sadly, the pandemic is denying many of us that pleasure, so we...

When you call your movie ’the deadliest film ever made’ you’re either brave, or stupid. Or I guess extremely confident in what you have produced. You open yourself up to a whole lot of criticism, mainly because people will expect something that they are very unlikely to get.

I kept my expectations low though. I actually liked that the filmmakers had gone with that tagline and also sent this line – “By watching Antrum you agree that Jinga Films and Sc Movies is hereby released of all liability for any event that might occur to you during or after your viewing” – to whoever was sent the screener. If you’re going to make this kind of movie, you...

Mexico’s Premier Horror Event Morbido Fest Readies Twelfth Edition
Pablo Guisa Koestinger
As the calendar changes from October to November, Mexican horror fans will ascend for the twelfth year on Morbido Fest, a Mexico City-based festival dedicated to all things macabre, organized and executed by Morbido Group CEO and founder Pablo Guisa Koestinger.

This year’s festival will kick off Oct. 30 with a spectacle grander in its ambition than any Morbido inauguration before. Taking place within the Esperanza Iris City theater, more than 60 artists will perform six choreographed musical numbers with Guisa taking the reigns as master of ceremonies. Those familiar with Guisa and his public persona won’t be surprised to hear that his opening night wardrobe alone includes eight costumes, with more to come in the following days.

Somehow, the TV network owner, festival director, writer, publisher and radio host found time to make appearances in three high-profile films screening at this year’s fest: Paco Plaza’s “Eye for an Eye,...
