Synopsis

  • 36-year-old jobless man Pushpinder (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) is trying to find a wife. Pushpinder is desperate to marry any willing girl no matter her appearance or personality. Anita "Anny" Awasthi (Athiya Shetty), a girl from a middle-class family in Bhopal, has turned down several marriage proposals because she is desperate to marry an NRI and settle abroad.

Anita lives with her parents Mr. Kedar Awasthi (Vivek Mishra) and Mom Mrs. Sulbha Awasthi (Navni Parihar). Anita rejects all marriage proposals where there is no chance of her going abroad. Anita is influenced by Facebook posts of her friends who live abroad and put glamorous pics of their lives on social media. Now any proposal from London or any such locations requires a dowry of Rs 25 Lakhs, and the family can only afford a dowry of Rs 6 Lakhs.

As such, Anita has now gained a reputation in her locality and people are afraid of asking for her hand in marriage. They start rejecting her proposal instead. Pushpinder has just returned from Dubai to Bhopal for a long holiday. He wants to get married, but his mom Indu (Vibha Chhibber) keeps rejecting all proposals as she needs a dowry. Indu doesn't allow Pushpinder to get friendly with any girl as she feels that this will only get in the way of her plans for her son. Hema is Pushpinder's sister and a good friend of Anita. Hakim (Abhishek Rawat) is Pushpinder's brother and Manohar (Sanjeev Vats) is his father.

Indu does not want Pushpinder to stay home for too long as she feels that this will lead to unnecessary loss of pay at his job. Indu hopes to get Hema married with the dowry from Pushpinder's wedding and Hakim's dowry will help pay for the house mortgage.

Pushpinder learns from Hema about Anita as her family moved next door to Pushpinder's family only 2 years ago. Pushpinder sees Anita on the roof of her house and is smitten with her, even though she is taller than Pushpinder and is a lot younger as well.

Hema tells Anita that Pushpinder is desperate to get married, but Indu would not approve of any marriage proposal for him. Anita and Pushpinder spend time with each other due to Hema's wedding shopping. While Pushpinder is calm and composed, Anita has a quick temper and is always willing to pick up a fight with everyone.

When Anita gets desperate, her unmarried Mausi Prabha (Karuna Pandey) advises her to seduce Pushpinder, since he is looking for a bride. Anita is dead against it as Pushpinder is too old according to her. Her Mausi explains that she is out of options and shortly Pushpinder will be gone as well.

As Anita decides to go for Pushpinder, to her horror, the same day he gets engaged to a fat girl, because his mom approved as her family had a lot of money. Anita tries to get Pushpinder to reject the proposal, but he can't do so due to the fear of his mother. The wedding is in 4 days.

Anita gets a major reprieve when the wedding gets called off when the girl's family refuse to pay any dowry. Anita takes advantage, scoops in, declares her love to Pushpinder. Realizing that Pushpinder is a mama's boy who would never cross his mother, Ani talks him into eloping with her. Both families are shocked when Anita and Pushpinder come back home after having wedded in a temple. When they show up back at the family's doorstep already married, the two families are forced to accept their marriage and start preparing for a wedding ceremony. Despite Indu's anger that Ani's family cannot afford her dowry demands, the wedding goes ahead as planned.

When Ani's father discreetly offers Pushpinder a portion of the dowry amount, he refuses to take it because he does not believe in the concept of dowry. Ani overhears their conversation and gains more respect for Pushpinder. Nevertheless, she feels no attraction for him and cannot consummate the marriage.

Now Anita doesn't really love Pushpinder, so deploys all innovative methods to avoid sleeping with Pushpinder. Then after the wedding, Anita finds out that Pushpinder was fired from his job in Dubai and has now taken up a new job on Bhopal. Anita devastated but slowly realizes that Pushpinder is a nice guy and her whole family to grateful to have him as their son-in-law.

A few days later news comes that Pushpinder has been re-instated at his old Dubai job with a raise. But now Pushpinder does not want to go back as he wants to stay with his family. This enrages Indu and Ani, who both desperately want Pushpinder to move back to Dubai. His mom Indu is livid as she wants Pushpinder's salary to fund Hema's dowry. Indu tells Pushpinder to take the job, to which he refuses by saying Dubai does not suit him, he misses everyone and wishes to stay close to his family.

Indu then advises Ani not to consummate the marriage until he agrees to return to Dubai. Pushpinder, overhearing them discuss their plan, argues with Ani and slaps her. Infuriated Ani goes back to her parents' house but her father Kedar tells her to work it out as it was her decision to marry Pushpinder. She leaves both homes and stands outside her house until Pushpinder's grandmother (Usha Nagar) convinces her to come inside. Ani stays angry with Pushpinder even after he makes some attempts to reconcile.

One night, Pushpinder abruptly leaves for Dubai. He leaves a note to Ani in which he apologizes for slapping her. He also encloses a one-way ticket to Singapore so that her dream of settling abroad may yet come true. In Pushpinder's absence, Indu and Ani see the error of their ways. Indu regrets forcing Pushpinder into working in Dubai to satisfy her financial needs. Ani regrets marrying Pushpinder without any personal attachment solely from a desire to leave India. Meanwhile, Pushpinder, unable to leave his family behind, returns. His sudden reappearance sparks a reconciliation with Indu and Ani. Pushpinder and Ani dash off at last to consummate their marriage.
