Netflix has commenced production on a series adaptation of Miles Franklin’s seminal Australian novel “My Brilliant Career,” with filming underway at Adelaide Studios and various South Australian locations.
The streaming giant is partnering with Jungle Entertainment on the period drama, which marks a fresh take on Franklin’s 1901 coming-of-age tale that captured the aspirations of young Australian women seeking independence and self-determination.
Set in rural Australia at the turn of the 20th century, the series follows Sybylla Melvyn, a spirited and ambitious young woman who dreams of literary fame and refuses to conform to the limited expectations placed upon women of her era. Born into a struggling farming family, Sybylla must navigate the constraints of her social circumstances while pursuing her artistic ambitions and grappling with questions of love, duty, and personal fulfillment. Her journey becomes a bold assertion of female independence in a society that offers few options beyond marriage and motherhood.

Exclusive: Australian actress Alycia Debnam-Carey (Apple Cider Vinegar) is the newest addition to the cast of the still-untitled new Monsterverse movie from Legendary.
Character description is under wraps. The project reunites Debnam-Carey with Kaitlyn Dever, with whom she just starred in the hit Netflix series Apple Cider Vinegar. As previously announced, others in the ensemble include Jack O’Connell, Matthew Modine, Delroy Lindo, and Dan Stevens, who reprises his role as veterinarian Trapper Beasley from last year’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the highest-grossing installment in the franchise.
Grant Sputore (I Am Mother) is directing from a script by Shang-Chi‘s Dave Callaham. While plot specifics are fuzzy, we’re told the film features several new human characters alongside Titans Godzilla and Kong, as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat. Sputore took over the directorial reins from Adam Wingard following his work on The New Empire and Godzilla vs. Kong.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power joined Amazon Prime Video in 2022 to critical acclaim, with a wide range of characters that grew even wider for season 2. Based on high fantasy pioneer J.R.R. Tolkien's work, the show tackled tales set in the Second Age of Middle-earth. The show has the rights to adapt Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, plus its appendices, which outline the story that The Rings of Power is telling in detail. The show created original characters and original material to fit in and around Tolkien's source material, and also brought classic Tolkien characters to life.

The highly anticipated second season of The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power is soon to be released. Fans of the book and the previous season are thrilled and excited for what’s to come. Speculations are up in the air about the character of the villain in this new season.
Actor Charlie Vickers has reprised his role as the enigmatic elf Halbrand, and most of the new season is said to feature his journey. While in an interview discussing his role, the actor shockingly revealed his greatest fear. It wasn’t about the complexities of his character or filming demands, but his costume. The actor’s point was very justified and realistic for his circumstances.

Director George Miller decided to continue the Mad Max franchise with the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga… and while the movie got good reviews (like the 9/10 review from JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray), the worldwide box office numbers just barely passed the $168 million budget, so the Furiosa story was not something a lot of movie-goers were exceptionally eager to see on the big screen. It has been on VOD for a while now, and now we know when it’s going to start streaming: SuperHeroHype reports that Furiosa will be available to watch on the Max streaming service as of August 16th.
Directed by Miller from a screenplay he wrote with Nico Lathouris, Furiosa has the following synopsis: As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus.

Three-time Oscar-nominated actor Sigourney Weaver will receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 81st Venice International Film Festival.
Weaver said, “To be gifted this award is a privilege I share with all the filmmakers and collaborators I have worked with throughout the years. I proudly accept this award in celebration of all who have helped bring these films to life.”
Venice’s director Alberto Barbera, whose mandate was just renewed, said, “An actress of the caliber of Sigourney Weaver has few rivals. Strengthened by her significant theatrical training, she won over the great film-going public with ‘Alien,’ directed by Ridley Scott, soon becoming an emblematic figure of the 1980s.”
“During the course of that decade, she forged the image of a heroine unprecedented in the action film genre, able to victoriously rival the male models who, up to that point, had dominated epic and adventure movies. Not satisfied...

Alyla Browne may only be 14 years old, but in the short time she’s been acting she’s somehow managed to assemble one of the most ridiculously star-studded on-screen family trees.
In Hulu’s “Nine Perfect Strangers,” she played Nicole Kidman’s daughter. In Amazon Studio’s “The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart,” she was Sigourney Weaver’s granddaughter. Meanwhile, in George’s Miller’s fantasy “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” she appeared as a young Tilda Swinton.
But the fast-rising Australian is about to top all of that. In “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” she plays the Imperator Furiosa as a child, meaning she’s not just the young Anya Taylor-Joy, but the young Charlize Theron as well.
“It’s absolutely insane,” notes the teen, now juggling her studies with her first trip to Cannes for the world premiere of the one of the year’s most highly anticipated films.

“The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart” features a powerhouse performance from veteran star Sigourney Weaver, who once again reminds us that she is one of the best in the business. The acclaimed Amazon Prime Video limited series follows a young girl who survives a violent upbringing and is then subsequently raised on a flower farm by her grandmother. Weaver plays the grandmother, June, and ties the entire series together with the sheer might of her performance. She propelled the story to greatness and, as a result, propelled the series to excellent reviews.
Robert Lloyd (Los Angeles Times) opined: “The series, which is sensitively written, expertly performed by actors young and old, and beautifully shot, is in no rush to give up its mysteries, and by drawing out the drama, what’s obvious in the story comes off as proportionally more subtle.”

While many people might be afraid of spiders, only around 3-6% of the population experience true, debilitating arachnophobia that causes them to have an irrational fear of the eight-legged arthropods. It’s that fear that Australian director Kiah Roache-Turner exploits in his new creature feature horror film, Sting. Starring Ryan Corr and Alyla Browne, the movie focuses on a struggling family that inhabits a run-down Brooklyn apartment building, and the unique spider that’s introduced into their life.
Corr and Browne appear opposite one another as step-father and step-daughter. MovieWeb caught up with the pair to discuss Sting, and what it was like to come face-to-face with a giant spider. “Oppenheimer” cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema won Feature Film at the 38th ASC Awards, March 3 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The Oscar favorite beat the other four Oscar nominees: “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” Poor Things,” and “El Conde”.
This marked van Hoytema’s first ASC win after three nominations (including “Dunkirk” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”) and positions the Dutch-Swedish cinematographer for his first Oscar win. Significantly, “Oppenheimer” represents the culmination of his experimental IMAX collaboration with director Christopher Nolan. The duo achieved a new kind of intimate spectacle with this psychological thriller about physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Best Actor nominee Cillian Murphy), the “father of the atomic bomb.” Van Hoytema used the large-format IMAX camera to explore the landscape of faces; namely, Oppenheimer’s in color from his perspective and Salieri-like adversary Admiral Lewis Strauss’ (Best Supporting Actor nominee Robert Downey Jr.) in black-and-white from his.

Hoyte Van Hoytema has taken top honors at the 38th annual American Society of Cinematographers Awards for his work on “Oppenheimer.”
Van Hoytema topped a field that included Edward Lachman for “El Conde, Matthew Libatique for “Maestro,” Rodrigo Prieto for “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Robbie Ryan for “Poor Things.”
The awards were handed out Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel with Ed Helms hosting the festivities.

“Talk to Me,” the creepy hit horror film directed by Australian brothers Danny and Michael Philippou’s picked up five Aacta Industry Awards on Thursday.
Their prizes included best screenplay and best editing in film. “The New Boy,” which premiered in Cannes last year, collected two Aacta Industry awards for best cinematography and best design in film.
“The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart,” “Deadloch” and “The Australian Wars” dominated the Aacta Industry awards’ television categories, with three prizes each.
The most nominated TV production of this year, “The Newsreader,” scooped the best direction in drama or comedy award.
Hit comedy “Colin From Accounts” and the recently renewed ABC drama series “Bay of Fires” came away empty-handed from the Aacta Industry Awards which focus on excellence in screen craft across film, television, documentary, short film, and digital production.
But some will have further chances on Saturday with another round of prizes in the main Aacta Awards.

All of Us Strangers, The Color Purple, Fellow Travelers, The Last of Us, and Our Flag Means Death (which was just canceled by Max) received nominations for the 35th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. The annual awards recognize fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues in the media, and this year’s list includes 310 nominees.
“For 35 years, the GLAAD Media Awards has provided the global stage for LGBTQ creators, alongside industry talent and leaders to be celebrated and supported. At a time when the LGBTQ community is under attack by false narratives and misinformation, when less than half of American say they are familiar with transgender and nonbinary people, and when one in five Gen Z adults identify as LGBTQ, this year’s nominees powerfully reflect the realities of LGBTQ existence today, in our communities and around the globe,...
