Exclusive: In a week that controversy surrounding Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story was generating headlines aplenty for Netflix, an old British show quietly slipped into the streamer’s UK top 10, neatly demonstrating something of a 2024 viewing trend.
The Toby Jones-starring drama series Capital premiered on the BBC in 2015 and yet here it was sitting sixth in Netflix’s most-watched list after being acquired by the streamer almost a decade later.
The show made a bit of a splash when it launched on the BBC years ago, but didn’t exactly go gangbusters. Yet in the past few weeks, the internet has been awash with article headlines such as “Netflix has just quietly added a forgotten BBC masterpiece” in relation to the rather parochial Capital, which starred Jones as one of the residents of a road in South London who starts receiving unsettling postcards.

The duo are now set to play daughter and father in “Daddy Issues,” which follows the story of hard-partying Gemma (Wood), who lives for the weekend when she gets down to let down her hair in Manchester. But after a brief encounter on an airplane during a vacation to Portugal leaves her pregnant, Gemma finds her life turned upside down.

‘Babylon Berlin’ Broadcaster Sky Deutschland to Pull Out of Scripted Originals From 2024 (Exclusive)
Sky Deutschland, the German arm of Comcast-owned pay-tv operator Sky, is pulling out of scripted originals from 2024, Variety can reveal.
Staff were notified of the surprise move by Sky Deutschland boss Devesh Raj on Thursday morning, local time. Variety understands that the entire scripted originals team will eventually be disbanded, though shows that have already been commissioned and are in production, such as post-apocalypse drama “Helgoland 513″ and “Das Boot” Season 4, will finish filming. Any projects in development will be “put into turnaround,” as per another internal note from Sky Studios CEO Cécile Frot-Coutaz, also seen by Variety.
The most high-profile casualty of the strategy shift will undoubtedly be period police thriller “Babylon Berlin,” which is critically acclaimed and aired its fourth season in the fall. Fans have been expecting a fifth season, but Variety understands that the neo-noir — which isn’t currently in production — has been canceled by Sky...

The ‘Coming Soon to TV’ shelf in your local bookshop will be sagging under the weight of this lot – the thrillers, sci-fi stories, crime novels and non-fiction currently being adapted for television. If you prefer to read ahead before your imagination is sullied by the small screen version, then here’s where to start, from Apple TV+’s adaptation of 1950s-set revenge comedy Lessons in Chemistry and psychological thriller The Crowded Room, to Prime Video’s new Neil Gaiman show Anansi Boys and rumoured Kay Scarpetta series, via Netflix’s true-life opioid drama Painkiller, Itvx/MGM+ historical adventure series The Winter King and many more. Many many more.
It’s too soon to say when we’ll see those planned adaptations below which are yet to film, given the current WGA Writers’ Strike and earth-shifts taking place among the streaming networks whose pile ‘em high, sell ‘em cheap model is proving unsustainable,...

It was a big night for Irish talent at this year’s British version of the Emmys, the BAFTA TV Awards, which were doled out at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Hosted by Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett, two Irish series — – “Bad Sisters” and “Derry Girls” — won a pair of prizes as did the telefilm “I Am Ruth.”
“Derry Girls” won Best Scripted Comedy for its fourth and final season, which was a lovely parting gift for writer and creator Lisa McGee. The show beat out “Ghosts,” “Big Boys,” and “Am I Being Unreasonable?” although the latter did pick up the prize for Best Comedy Actor for 14-year-old Lenny Rush. He edged out Matt Berry (“What We Do In The Shadows”), Joseph Gilgun (“Brassic”), Stephen Merchant (“The Outlaws”), Jon Pointing (“Big Boys”), and Daniel Radcliffe (“Weird: The Al Yankovic Story”).

Winslet made a powerful speech, saying: “It has never been a harder time to be a parent, it has never been a more dangerous time to be a child in an online world. Get out your magnifying glasses and dust off that notebook, because The Masked Singer is back to turn a nation of viewers into sofa detectives.
Helmed once again by comedian Joel Dommett, the unique competition shows 13 mystery celebrities singing familiar tunes on stage, while dressed up in a costume obscuring who they really are.
Guessing along with the in-studio audience and the viewers at home are the judges: Mo Gilligan, Davina McCall, Rita Ora and Jonathan Ross.
In the season’s first episode on New Year’s Day, Ghost was eliminated and was later revealed to be football star Chris Kamara.
Still, there’s a long season ahead, with plenty more costumes to be unmasked. Here’s a guide to the clues and guesses so far.

Exclusive: Allen Leech and India Mullen will lead the cast of an Irish drama series for AMC Networks’ Sundance Now and local broadcaster Virgin Media Television, we’ve learned.
The pair will topline six-part drama The Vanishing Triangle, which goes into production later this year with a U.S.-UK-Ireland production set-up, and Eccho Rights attached as international distributor. The show is inspired on true events that shook Ireland in the 1990s, when several women disappeared. While the characters and events in the series are fictional, the producers have spoken to several of the real life victims’ families, and hope the show will keep their stories in the Irish public’s mind. The show title is regularly used in the Irish media to refer to the events, which began with the disappearance of American woman Annie McCarrick in 1993 and spiraled to involve many similar cases.

The show is inspired on true events that shook Ireland in the 1990s, when several women disappeared. While the characters and events in the series are fictional, the producers have spoken to several of the real life victims’ families, and hope the show will keep their stories in the Irish public’s mind. “Sex Education” producer Eleven has cast “Ten Pound Poms,” a drama series from “Brassic” creator Danny Brocklehurst for BBC and Australian streamer Stan.
Michelle Keegan (“Brassic”), Faye Marsay (“Game of Thrones”) and Warren Brown (“The Responder”) lead the cast alongside Australian actors Rob Collins (“Mystery Road”), Leon Ford (“Elvis”), Declan Coyle (“Long Black”), David Field (“Shantaram”), Stephen Curry (“Hounds of Love”), Hattie Hook (“Savage River”), Finn Treacy (“The Portable Door”) and Emma Hamilton (“The Tudors”).
The six-part series follows a group of Brits as they leave dreary post-war Britain in 1956 to embark on a life-altering adventure on the other side of the world, in sun-soaked Australia. But life down under isn’t exactly the idyllic dream the new arrivals have been promised.
Brocklehurst said: “ ‘Ten Pounds Poms’ demands an ensemble cast that we are always rooting for, actors we love and want to succeed. I am thrilled to have found those actors.
