Jeff Daniels’ 1-Year-Old Donald Trump Remark Perfectly Explains Why He Hates Republicans
Image
Jeff Daniels caught everyone’s attention when he made some remarks against Donald Trump during an appearance on The View (as reported by The Things) in 2024. The actor appeared on the talk show to promote his miniseries A Man in Full, but the moment was charged with a different reason. Trump was back in the headlines, handling the fallout from the 2016 election alongside mounting legal troubles.

When asked if the president inspired any of his roles, Daniels answered “no” without hesitation, drawing a big laugh from the audience. The moment that really landed was when he compared his Dumb and Dumber character Harry Dunne to Eric Trump – a sharp joke that left the crowd buzzing. This sequence was full of sharp wit and obvious dislike, traits that Daniels hasn’t hidden when talking politics. He added:

Trump thinks the biggest thing in the world is himself, and doesn’t think...

Oof, An Upcoming Marvel Project May Have Just Cast The Dream Norman Osborn
Image
The Spider-Noir series has cast Brendan Gleeson, hinting at a potential iconic Spider-Man villain role for him. Gleeson's potential portrayal of Norman Osborn could be perfect for the show. The Noir iteration of Norman Osborn would differentiate itself from Willem Dafoe's portrayal in the past.

Marvels upcoming Spider-Noir series just potentially cast their ideal Spider-Man villain. Spider-Man Noir debuted in the Marvel Comics in 2009, but the character became incredibly popular after his breakout appearance in 2018s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. The noir-themed take on Spider-Man operates during the years of the Great Depression and World War II, taking on a range of enemies from New York City crime lords to Nazi German forces. After the character was incredibly well-received in Into The Spider-Verse, a live-action Spider-Man Noir solo series about the character was ordered.

The Apprentice Movie Sparks Debate: How Big a Role Should Hollywood Play In Election Year Politics?
Donald Trump
For some reason, there has yet to be a mainstream Hollywood feature film about Donald Trump dramatizing any aspect of Trump's life, with an actor portraying him.

There have been countless documentaries about Trump, both for him and against him, and various comedians have portrayed him, including Alec Baldwin and later James Austin Johnson on Saturday Night Live.

The Comey Rule, a 2020 Showtime miniseries based on the memoirs of former FBI director James Comey, starred Brendan Gleeson as the 45th president, opposite Jeff Daniels as Comey.

At the same time, quite a few feature films, like The Oath in 2018 and Irresistible and The Hunt in 2020, have attempted to make dramatic hay out of the political controversies of the Trump years.

However, those who have not featured a Trump-based character have not referenced him directly.

However, what the movies have avoided is a direct dramatization of any part of Trump's life,...

Review: Netflix's A Man in Full Is Stylish, But Lacks David E. Kelley's Soul
Image
The following contains spoilers for A Man in Full Episode 1, "Saddlebags," now streaming on Netflix.

The Netflix miniseries A Man in Full is very much like the world it creates -- stylish, engaging, but ultimately empty. On paper, it deserves to be a smash hit: written and produced by David E. Kelley, directed by award-winners Regina King and Thomas Schlamme, and with iconic actor Jeff Daniels in the lead. However, despite its lengthy resume and how beautiful it looks, the show never connects with its audience in any way past the surface.

The six-episode limited series is adapted from Tom Wolfe's 1998 novel of the same name, so some of the problems come inherent in the source material. Wolfe is an acclaimed novelist who even influenced Marvel Comics, and he has a very specific style that may not appeal to everyone. But given the credentials of the Netflix creative team,...

A Man In Full's Jeff Daniels Talks "Larger Than Life" Character & Finding "Some Good" In Villains
Image
Jeff Daniels' TV dominance continues with A Man in Full, his first collaboration with Netflix. The miniseries adaptation of Tom Wolfe's novel of the same name revolves around an Atlanta mogul facing bankruptcy and fighting back. Daniels found playing a morally ambiguous character "frighteningly easy" and enjoyed the challenges of finding humanity in the role.

Jeff Daniels continues his TV dominance with A Man in Full. Since holding his first major television show role with HBO's The Newsroom, the two-time Emmy winner has steadily built an impressive filmography on the small screen, starring in everything from the acclaimed Western miniseries Godless to Showtime's two-part political miniseries The Comey Rule and the American Rust adaptation. Interestingly, the new show marks Daniels' first collaboration with Netflix after multiple collaborations with Prime Video and Hulu for the acclaimed miniseries adaptation of The Looming Tower.

Much like most of his recent shows, A Man in Full...

Blood for Dust Review | A Gritty Crime Thriller with Great Acting
Image
From director Rod Blackhurst, working off a dynamite script he wrote with David Ebeltoft, Blood for Dust has been described as "Breaking Bad meets Fargo" by Variety. Not too far off, and a number of gritty neo-noir classics might also come to mind as you watch lead actor Scoot McNairy simply nail the protagonist role of Cliff, an everyman salesman who gets in too deep while trying to earn a buck amid desperate times. Aren't we all?

Taking us back to the 1990s, specifically in the tri-state area of the U.S., Blood for Dust features consistently solid performances and a thought-provoking statement about how low we might sink to make a dollar and provide for our families. We've seen this kind of story play out before, but the universal themes of economic hardship and great cast make this worth watching.

Denis Villeneuve sets up post-‘Dune’ project, ‘Nuclear War’
Image
Frank Herbert wrote six “Dune” novels, but Quebecois director Denis Villeneuve has made it clear that after book two, “Dune Messiah,” he’s quitting the worm-ridden desert planet Arrakis, despite his box office wins and forging such fans as Steven Spielberg. As reported by Deadline, Legendary Entertainment has secured the rights to Annie Jacobsen’s nonfiction work “Nuclear War: A Scenario” as an option for him once he’s ready to return to Earth.

Jacobsen’s book, which hit stores less than two weeks ago, is the result of a decade of research resulting in a realistic, step-by-step “just what the hell would it be like if this nightmare came true.” Just reading the New York Times review is absolutely terrifying.

Her previous works include “Area 51: An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base,” “Operation Paperclip: The Secret Intelligence Program that Brought Nazi Scientists to America” and...

‘Fellow Travelers’ Review: A Superbly Paired Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey Give Showtime’s Sometimes Stodgy Miniseries Its Spark
Image
In the most lacerating episode of Max’s dearly departed comedy The Other Two, the characters attend the premiere of a Broadway show titled 8 Gay Men with AIDS: A Poem in Many Hours. Wondering about future roles for his Method-actor boyfriend, who stars in the play, Drew Tarver’s Cary wonders, “Is there anything coming up that is prestigious and gay, but doesn’t have, like, nonstop trauma in it?”

The fact is, we’re not at a point, as a society, where we can stop telling stories of trauma. There remains a cultural need for narratives that foreground the AIDS epidemic, that acknowledge the horrors of the Holocaust and slavery. That said, if you’re going to do a trauma-fueled, decades-spanning odyssey of gay life from McCarthy to Reagan, weaving in the Red Scare and the early days of AIDS, comparisons to Angels in America are going to be inevitable.

According to the official release “Alive and Well Enough” “mixes storytelling, original music and performance, [and] is like nothing you have heard before.” Would it be too much to ask for several chapters devoted to the making of “Arachnophobia?”

“Audible is the only place where I get to do everything I do,” said Daniels in an official statement. “’Alive and Well Enough’ is an audio adventure of an accidental artist who one day looked up and realized he had a sense of humor, a passion for writing and stories to tell.”

Barbie casting directors Lucy Bevan and Allison Jones are spilling the tea on how they landed with the perfect set of Barbies and Kens.

“We needed actors who could get the fact that our Barbies only knew pleasant things,” Jones told Vanity Fair during a recent interview.

Margot Robbie plays Stereotypical Barbie, while Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Ana Cruz Kayne, and Dua Lipa, to name a few, play different variants of Barbie.

Ryan Gosling landed the role of Beach Ken with Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Scott Evans, Ncuti Gatwa, and John Cena, to name a few, playing other versions of Ken.

Due to Covid restrictions, some potential Kens were not able to make the shoots in London where they would’ve had to spend three months. The directors revealed that Bowen Yang, Dan Levy and Ben Platt ultimately didn’t land a role in the film due to scheduling conflicts.

A reckoning is upon us as writers try to keep their place at a moment when studios and streamers struggle to impose economic efficiencies to show fiscal responsibility to their shareholders, and writers struggle with things like streaming deals that have no chance for backend compensation in success, and series that have far fewer than the 22 episodes that had been the norm on the traditional networks.

In Strike Talk’s Week One episode,...

She Said Review: The Harvey Weinstein Exposé Drama Talks A Lot But Unearths Little [NYFF]
Image
What is the proper amount of time for a scandal or traumatic event to let lie before it inevitably gets adapted by Hollywood? Recently, it feels like that window is getting smaller and smaller — within a few years we've gotten adaptations of the 2016 Trump election ("The Comey Rule") and the Roger Ailes ousting ("Bombshell"), while HBO has enough political miniseries about controversial elections to make up a small army. Based on the 2019 book of the same name by New York Times journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, "She Said" chronicles the reporting of the five-month exposé that revealed the history of abuse and sexual misconduct by one of the most powerful producers in Hollywood, kicking off...

Secret Invasion will invade TV screens in 2023.

The highly-anticipated series was announced almost three years ago, and we finally got our first glimpse during Disney's D23 Expo.

"The crossover comic event series showcases a faction of shape-shifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years," Disney+ previously shared of the series.

Now, we have a trailer that flawlessly highlights what the show is about.

Samuel L. Jackson headlines the project, which shows off Nick Fury and Maria Hill's first meeting in years.

Maria is shocked that Nick came out of hiding for the meeting.

“This is different," he offers.

The series will follow on from 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home, which revealed the versions of Nick and Maria in the flick were Skrulls.

Skrulls can shapeshift, meaning that there's a lot of possibilities in terms of storytelling.

Maria and Nick seemingly join forces to find the cause of these skrulls,...

Brendan Gleeson joins Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga in 'Joker: Folie A Deux'
Image
Veteran actor Brendan Gleeson is set to appear in ‘Joker: Folie A Deux’, alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, who play the clown prince of chaos and his main squeeze, Harley Quinn.

Todd Phillips, who directed Phoenix to an Oscar in 2019’s ‘Joker’, returns as director.

But whereas the first film played like a comic book riff on Martin Scorsese’s ‘Taxi Driver’, the follow-up is a musical, albeit more in the vein of ‘A Star is Born’ than ‘West Side Story’ or ‘Singing in the Rain’, reports Variety.

Warner Bros. and DC are backing the sequel, which has a lot to live up to considering that “Joker” grossed north of 1 billion.

While much of ‘Folie A Deux’ remains shrouded in mystery, fans can safely expect the films to remain in their own independent universe.

That means the movie will likely lack any connection to either the DC Extended Universe...

‘This England’ Teaser: Kenneth Branagh Plays Disgraced British Prime Minster Boris Johnson For Director Michael Winterbottom

Although British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his resignation in July and will remain in power until his party chooses a leader, his legacy of incompetence will stick with him for years, if not the rest of his political career. But like Trump, who has received many kinds of satirical treatments— several actors parodying his oafishness on “Saturday Night Live”— and a kind of biopic treatment—Brendon Gleeson portraying the former last guy on “The Comey Rule”— Boris Johnson is getting a kind of biopic treatment in “This England,” starring BAFTA and Academy Award-winning actor/director Kenneth Branagh in the lead role.
