The story of a shy teenage girl who comes out of her shell after raising the boy of her dreams from the dead sounds like a job for the Tim Burton of yore. And yet, Lisa Frankenstein’s strengths are so specific to a weirdo female gaze that even the certified freak who made Beetlejuice would’ve failed to deliver on the potential of this film’s premise.
Diablo Cody’s script—operating on the same wicked, smirking wavelength as her now-cult classic Jennifer’s Body—is absolutely fearless in chasing the darkest implications of this story to its bitter end. The film gleefully lets its body count—in both the homicidal and sexual sense of the term, sometimes in the same scene—add up in gruesome, macabre fashion.
Getting there, though, is somewhat rough. Just as Lisa (Kathryn Newton) can’t seem to connect with the world around her at first,...

Type O Negative and Valentine’s Day go together. They’re the definitive romantic metal band, and now a live clip of “Love You to Death” has been released for our V-Day enjoyment.
The footage is taken from Type O’s performance at Wacken Open Air in 2007. Originally included on the seminal 1996 album October Rust, “Love You to Death” is arguably the band’s signature song, fusing gothic camp, doom metal, and genuine heartfelt emotion. Not surprisingly, it became an obligatory inclusion on the band’s setlists.
One of the most impressive aspects of Type O was their ability to perfectly render their studio output in the live setting. The late Peter Steele’s command of voice and instrument is profound, as seen in the Wacken clip, and the rest of the band members relish in their respective parts — especially keyboardist Josh Silver.

The comedic whodunit “Confess, Fletch” features the best leading-man role that star Jon Hamm has enjoyed since his breakthrough performance as Don Draper in the exceptionally rich Madison Avenue drama “Mad Men.”
In the last seven years, Hamm has stood out in a few decent supporting roles — “Bad Times at the El Royale,” “Richard Jewell” — and some voice acting performances, particularly Tony Stark in the Marvel animated comedy “M.O.D.O.K.” and a brief cameo as “Don Grouper” in a 2016 episode of “SpongeBob SquarePants.”
Hamm gets to show more of his range in “Confess, Fletch,” a breezy murder mystery based on the second of Gregory McDonald’s “Fletch” novels, the first of which was adapted into a cultishly revered 1985 Chevy Chase vehicle.

While its details might sound as though they were taken out of a Gillian Flynn novel, the murder of Dee Dee Blanchard is, in fact, a true story. With The Act, Hulu is turning the real-life case into the first installation of its true-crime anthology series. The season features a talented cast that includes Patricia Arquette and Joey King as the leading characters. The show draws out the emotional narrative between Dee Dee and her daughter Gypsy Rose, who, after years of being the object of her mother's Munchausen syndrome by proxy, resorts to murder. The story isn't black and white, and it's tragic and terrifying in equal measures. Here are the dark facts of the case that viewers should know before watching the series.
The Build-Up

It’s been four years since Nick Godejohn brutally murdered Dee Dee Blanchard, the mother of his girlfriend Gypsy Rose Blanchard — who had been convinced by her mother that she suffered from a variety of different medical conditions, also known as Munchausen by Proxy.
In Oxygen’s “Killer Couples,” Godejohn gives his first interview since his sentencing this past February of a life in prison. In the special, Godejohn chronicles his relationship with Gypsy Rose, whom he met on a Christian chat room, and the subsequent murder of her mother so that the two could be together.
In June 2015, Dee Dee Blanchard was stabbed to death in her bed, and she was found several days later after a Facebook post had read, “That B— is dead!” from the joint account of the mother and daughter duo. There was no sign of Gypsy Rose, so the case was initially handled as an abduction case.

Tegan and Sara have remade some of the first songs they wrote together as teenagers for their new album, Hey, I’m Just Like You, out September 27th via Sire.
The new LP is based on a trove of cassette tapes the duo discovered while working on their upcoming memoir, High School, out September 24th. “They contained dozens of our first songs, written between the ages of 15 and 17,” Tegan said in a statement. “We immediately recognized the songs as an essential part of our high school story.”

Marcia Gay Harden and Emily Skeggs became inseparable on the set of “Love You to Death,” a Lifetime movie about a protective mother (Harden) who manipulates her daughter (Skeggs) to the brink of violence. The two leads became so close that when Skeggs fell sick during a long day of shooting, Harden was ready with wine, a cheese spread, and a drawn bath at Skegg’s hotel room.
The bond Harden and Skeggs developed over 18 days of filming was similar to the love between a mother and a daughter, but not quite like the duo they portrayed.
“It was truly beautiful,” Skeggs told TheWrap’s Thom Geier of Harden’s gesture at a Q&A on Monday following a screening of the tv film that premiered earlier this year. “I felt like I had an incredible mentor and support system on set.”

We now exist in a time further away from Wolfgang Petersen’s “Das Boot” than that film was to the end of the global conflict it depicted.
Almost four decades since the German submarine-centered epic first arrived in theaters, Hulu and Sky are partnering for a summer release of a new eight-part companion piece to the original story. “Das Boot” picks up a year after the 1981 film (based on the Lothar-Günther Buchheim novel of the same name) leaves off. Instead of solely focusing on underwater life aboard a U-boat, this new Hulu series also looks at life on the shore among the growing French resistance.
The trilingual ensemble — including Lizzy Caplan, Vicky Krieps, Vincent Kartheiser, Tom Wlaschiha, James D’Arcy, and Rick Okon — span across countries and international water, through Nazi-controlled France and the launch of the German fleet’s newest ship, U-612. But alongside the spy subplots taking...

Matricide and Munchausen syndrome by proxy may not sound like natural Emmy bait, but in 2019 anything is possible.
That seems to be the takeaway as not one but three projects – Hulu’s limited series “The Act,” Lifetime’s movie “Love You to Death,” and Investigation Discovery’s documentary “Gypsy’s Revenge” – are eligible for the upcoming Emmy season, and all three were inspired by the true-crime tragedy of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her mother, Dee Dee.
The Blanchards’ story has been, by turns, horrifying and fascinating people since the supposedly gravely-ill Gypsy Rose was discovered missing and Dee Dee was found murdered in her Missouri home in 2015. In the weeks and months after, it was revealed that Dee Dee had suffered from Munchausen by proxy, keeping Gypsy Rose highly – unnecessarily – medicated, until the young woman had her mother murdered by her Internet boyfriend. Suffice it to say, that’s the...

Although Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden had watched her mother Beverly’s continued decline from Alzheimer’s disease, she didn’t know last Thanksgiving would be their final holiday gathering.
“I knew it was uncomfortable for my three kids to speak to their grandmother and spend a week at her home in Texas over Thanksgiving,” Harden, 59, told People at the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Hope on the Horizon fundraiser in Palm Beach.
On Monday, she was honored at the event as an activist, actress and author of last year’s memoir, The Seasons of My Mother.

Today marks the 35th anniversary of Lifetime. It is being celebrated with a marathon of signature original movies from the past two decades, like Flirting with Forty, Homeless to Harvard, Steel Magnolias and The Gabby Douglas Story.
Besides a tribute to the network’s past, the marathon is a nod to its future. Last summer, under new A+E Networks CEO Paul Buccieri, Lifetime made a change in its programming strategy, putting emphasis back on original movies and using them as backdoor pilots over traditional series development.
The network signaled its renewed push in original movies last August when it announced a 2019 slate of 75 films.
“It’s gotten so much higher than that,” said Lifetime veteran Tanya Lopez, Evp, Movies, Limited Series & Original Movie Acquisitions. “I wouldn’t say that we’re doubling that but we’re definitely increasing them.” (The count includes both originals and acquisitions.)
