Some of the best horror movies don’t need two hours of runtime to completely destroy your nerves. In fact, when it comes to horror, shorter is often better. Since horror relies on tension and fear of the unknown, it's easy to desensitize an audience or lose steam after extended scares or after a big reveal. The scariest ones often operate on a strict time limit, packing in nightmare fuel, unbearable tension, and gut-wrenching reveals in rapid fire. Whether it’s supernatural terror, psychological dread, or pure unhinged chaos, horror doesn’t need to overstay its welcome to be effective.
From genre-defining classics to modern nightmares, these terrifying films keep audiences on edge with efficient pacing and relentless scares. Whether you’re looking for something chilling to watch on a time crunch or just appreciate tightly crafted horror, these picks guarantee maximum terror with minimal runtime. Francis Ford Coppola is one of the biggest filmmakers of all time. That cannot denied. The Oscar-winning director has left us numerous works that will remain an important part of the history of cinema, including but not limited to The Godfather trilogy, The Conversation, Dracula, and so on.
But while Coppola was a hitmaker several decades ago, after Dracula, his career started to fade. He was not present for some time and his long-awaited return, Megalopolis, was a disaster and a flop that earned him a Razzie for worst director. Still, as he has announced, he is not retiring and we have some news in that aspect.

The actor-models have made a documentary about Twiggy’s life that is as lively and sunny as her personality – but it doesn’t shy away from exploring the misogyny they both endured
The woman in the jade-green suede biker jacket and tartan trousers sticks out her hand. “’Allo, I’m Twig,” she says. The name still sounds funny after all these years, even for those of us who can’t recall a time when we hadn’t heard it. This perpetually effulgent figure was styled “Sticks” by a friend on account of her skinny legs, only for that to morph into “Twiggy” by the time her picture was splashed across the Daily Express, which named her “the face of 1966” when she was 16. Yet it feels stranger still to think of her as Lesley Hornby, the name inked on to her birth certificate 75 years ago.

Castlevania has to be on everyone’s watchlist for many reasons and it has nothing to do with the series’ popularity. Its a spin on the tale of Bram Stroker’s Dracula but it also reimagines several tropes within vampiric genre. But what has most fangirls going gaga is the charming dhampir Alucard.

Other than being a fan-favorite, he is a well-written yet complex character in most senses. There is a debate though regarding him being his mother’s splitting image. And while fans may have blown it out of proportion, his father’s influence is undisputed in most aspects.

There have been several dozen films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, going strong and releasing multiple films almost every year since its beginning in 2008. The McU's overwhelming volume has inspired several conversations by pundits and critics, wherein they ponder the series as one of the longest-running in cinema history. It is, of course, by no means the longest. Indeed, a close study of cinema history will immediately reveal film franchises that handily outstrip it.
One might immediately think of Godzilla, for instance, a film series that has been chugging along pretty steadily since its debut in 1954. To date, there have been 38 feature films (in both Japan and America) in the "Godzilla" franchise. Some deep-cut kiddie-entertainment enthusiasts may be able to recall that there are already 43 animated movies to star Mattel's Barbie, and that's not even counting Greta Gerwig's live-action blockbuster. Those 43 movies were made between 2001 and the present.

Castlevania has given a magnificent retelling of the vampire lore with its own twists added to it. There are many characters who are exceptionally well-fleshed out in Castlevania. Be it characters that appear briefly or the main characters and antagonists who carry the narrative- they all have personality and depth.

One of the best ways to make a TV show in this day and age is to have some existing IP to build it on. From podcasts to graphic novels to board games – if it has a built-in audience, it's more enticing to studios. Such is the case with the Audible Originals podcast Impact Winter, now being developed into a series for Netflix with Francis Lawrence, who directed I Am Legend and four of the Hunger Games films. The podcast series was written by Travis Beacham, who co-wrote Pacific Rim and Clash of the Titans.
Deadline reports that Lawrence is attached to a series adaptation of Impact Winter, the hit Audible podcast that also spawned a comic-book series. Longlegs star Maika Monroe's 2022 thriller is climbing up the Netflix charts. Watcher features Monroe as Julia as she navigates her new life in a foreign land. The film, directed by Chloe Okuno (Let the Right One In TV series) from a script by Okuno and Zack Ford, currently sits at number three on the Netflix chart in the United States.
The film follows Julia and her husband Francis (Karl Glusman), as they move back to his homeland of Bucharest, Romania in Eastern Europe, thanks to a job promotion. She is often left alone as Francis is constantly working, and before long, Julia believes a man living in the building across the street, played by Burn Gorman (The Dark Knight Rises), might be watching and stalking her.

The Academy Awards aren’t exactly an objective measure of cinematic quality, but it’s always gratifying to see hard-working artists be rewarded for their output – especially when those artists happen to work in the horror genre. And in honor of Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance being nominated for a whopping five Oscars this year, we’ve decided to look back on the small selection of horror movies that have managed to win Academy Awards.
Of course, the lines separating one genre from another can sometimes be hard to define, so don’t be surprised if we end up disagreeing on what does or doesn’t count as a proper horror picture. That being said, don’t forget to comment below with your own Oscar-winning favorites if you think we missed a particularly good one.
With that out of the way, onto the list…

Bram Stokerstruck gold when he penned his iconic novel, Dracula. More than 100 years later, over 200 films are considered adaptations of this horror staple. Movies like Nosferatumuddy the waters of what can be classified as “pure” adaptations. One of the fastest ways to identify a faithful Draculafilm is by checking for the brides of Dracula. The brides have a complex history, with different directors having wildly varied visions for how the women should look and behave. Audiences can usually count on one consistency: the brides being three, beautiful vampire ladies! Jesús Franco is, unsurprisingly, the director who best understood that the wives of Dracula needed to be spooky, yet sexy. In his adaptation of Count Dracula, Franco’s depiction of the wives is unnerving and enchanting, while not outright scary to watch.

For all their dozens of movies together and their well-documented friendship, Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing rarely played allies. Even their non-franchise, lesser-known features from Hammer Films usually set the pair at odds with one another, a casting choice established by The Curse of Frankenstein in 1957 and perpetuated by Horror of Dracula the next year. Similarly, the anthology films made by Amicus Productions, Hammer's American cousin, kept them separated in different installments per movie. Those overlapping facts make 1972’s Horror Express, a Spanish-British production with no ties to Hammer or Amicus, an outlier in their mutual filmography and the best use of their chemistry on and off the screen. The genre-bending, low-budget horror flick frees the friends from their conventional expectations and lets them play off one another to the fullest extent of their long-standing yet underutilized camaraderie.

Whether an in-joke among movie fans or broad references, director Quentin Tarantino has cemented his reputation over the past 30-plus years by being a walking repository of cinema history. He's arguably more knowledgeable than many film professors. And while these asides may allude to mainstream movies, his creative reinterpretations of other films' ideas often come with a wink and a nod to film geeks, requiring citations for those casual movie-watchers.
To call him a cinephile is an understatement. But in the eyes of one of the medium's greatest creators, Tarantino is "detestable." His harshest critic wasn’t even around to see his first film. Orson Welles predicted, or rather warned against, Tarantino’s style of movie-making. Near the end of his life, Welles observed that younger directors were "marinated" in movies to their detriment. He accurately anticipated the ascent of pop-culture-quoting meta-movies that rely on having an audience that has consumed thousands of films.

The Brutalist (Brady Corbet)
Brady Corbet’s long-gestating architecture epic looks and feels as painstakingly crafted as its lead character’s intricate architectonics. For as barren and minimalist as László Tóth’s (a terrific Adrien Brody) designs are, they pack a beautiful, mysterious, occasionally revelatory punch, much like Corbet’s winding three-and-a-half-hour (complete with built-in intermission!) story about a Hungarian architect who immigrated to New York after WWII only to be mentally and emotionally sucked in by the tide of a momentous decades-long project initiated by a ruthless Pennsylvania business tycoon. Its scope is enormous––almost impossible not to get wrapped up in. A sense of impending gravity gives this film the weight of the real, as if we’re witnessing history.

Roger Ebert was a film critic with the unique power to convey his passion for film to the masses. His enthusiasm was not blind, however, and he held the oft-maligned horror genre to an especially high standard. This list of the ten best films from Ebert's "Greatest Movies" collection illustrates his understanding of what makes a horror film a masterpiece.
Ebert believed that a horror film should "exorcise" something for the viewer — to help the audience process dark and traumatic feelings. Beginning with the German Expressionist revolution and reaching into the gory excesses of the 1970s and '80s, this wide-ranging list of films showcases the genre at its best. The critic's clear-eyed commentary on each picture will show fans why horror cinema will never die.

Stream the haunting new adaptation, plus a never-before-seen extended version, starting Friday, Feb. 21.
I absolutely loved “Nosferatu”. It’s everything a horror remake should be - respectful of the original while making its own mark. Bill Skarsgård’s voice as Nosferatu is unreal - guttural, chilling, and completely inhuman. The whole movie is just the right kind of creepy, never leaning on cheap jump scares but instead building tension through eerie visuals, unsettling silence, and incredible performances. Few remakes actually live up to their predecessors, but this one does. And very soon, it’ll be added to my list of best Dracula movies to stream. “The id grows tedious,” art critic Jackson Arn wrote recently, “when left to speak too freely.” The Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude keeps his in check by grounding flourishes in pure mundanity. Near the end of Kontinental ’25, an ex-professor, Orsolya (Eszter Tompa), and her former student, Fred (Adonis Tanța), sit by an anti-communist resistance monument in Cluj and watch a horrific video of a drone attack on a Russian soldier. Having found the dead body of a man she evicted earlier that day, Orsolya, who now works as a bailiff, is looking to blow off some steam. They move uphill and Fred––whose delivery bag is plastered with Romanian flags, so as not to be confused with immigrant gig workers––serenades her. Next, they have sex in the bushes. The film up to this point has been awash with ideas and vaguely apocalyptic images: Roman ruins, a robot dog, a dinosaur park,...

Four years after winning the Golden Bear for his irreverent satire “Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn,” Romanian auteur Radu Jude returns to the Berlinale with his latest feature, “Kontinental ’25,” which premieres Feb. 19 in the festival’s main competition.
The film follows a bailiff, Orsolya (Eszter Tompa), who’s plunged into a moral crisis after a homeless man she’s trying to evict commits suicide. Struggling with a profound sense of guilt, she looks for ways to ease her troubled conscience, even as she grows increasingly desperate for external reassurance and validation.
Easier said than done. As you might expect from one of world cinema’s leading provocateurs, Orsolya’s round-about search for redemption detours toward Jude’s larger concerns, taking in (but hardly limited to) moral relativism, post-socialist economics, nationalism and the Romanian housing crisis. Where these subjects converge — and how a simple Everywoman like Orsolya responds to...

There's a lot to love in Netflix's animated "Castlevania" shows. Based on the hit video game franchise of the same name, the sharply animated shows feature a fun alternate history to our own, where real-world events have been altered by the inclusion of supernatural beings like vampires and demons. There are some truly great characters with a lot of charm, some fantastically tragic antiheroes, and some good old-fashioned blood and gore. The sequel series, "Castlevania: Nocturne," has done well for the streamer, continuing the story set forth in "Castlevania" and setting up one of the best storylines in the whole saga, "Symphony of the Night."
But even if Netflix inexplicably gives "Castlevania" the axe (or stake), there's great news for fans who just can't get enough of vampires, alternate history, amazing animated violence, and guys named Alucard, because there's a classic anime franchise that contains all of those things: "Hellsing.

For the bulk of his career, Leslie Nielsen was best known for his stern, dramatic roles. His tall stature and low voice had casting directors offering him parts as commanders, leaders, and even heavies. Many might recall Nielsen's stone-faced turn in 1956's "Forbidden Planet" as the captain in "The Poseidon Adventure," or playing a cop in the 1972 cop drama "The Bold Ones: The Protectors." In 1977's "Day of the Animals" he plays a manly outdoorsman who loses his mind and, quite darkly, declares insane dominion over animals and women. Some might recall that he can hold his breath a long time, as he declared in "Creepshow." Many will be shocked to witness Nielsen beat and assault Barbra Streisand in the 1987 drama "Nuts."
However, Nielsen did appear in a handful of comedies, most notably, playing Dr. Rumack in the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker farce "Airplane!" The parody proved that he had a talent for deadpan comedy,...

Robert Eggers had made a name for himself as a very creative and original director before tackling Nosferatu, a remake of the 1922 German silent film by F.W. Murnau. However, even with the success he's had previously, Nosferatu reached new heights.
The gothic horror had been a longtime passion project for the director, who intended to direct Nosferatufollowing his 2015 directorial debut, The Witch. He decided to focus on other projects before that, helming 2019's The Lighthouse and 2022's The Northman instead. Focus Features’ second highest-grossing movie ever at the domestic box office, Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu, will finally land on Peacock on February 21.
That’s a 58-day theatrical window to Focus’ sister streamer, one of the longer windows for a 2024 release from the Univeral specialty division. Focus Features titles with the longest theatrical-to-svod windows were Drive-Away Dolls (60 days) and Housekeeping for Beginners (63 days).
The period Dracula movie easily became Eggers’ highest-grossing out with $95.4 million stateside and $175.9M global. For Focus, Nosferatu ranks behind 2019’s Downton Abbey ($96.8M) as its second highest-grossing at the domestic B.O. Despite the heat on Nosferatu it will likely remain Focus’ second best, still $1.4M shy of the feature take of the PBS British series. Nosferatu is arguably the highest-grossing major studio release of a Dracula movie stateside since Columbia Pictures’ 1992 Francis Ford Coppola-directed Bram Stoker’s Dracula ($82.5M domestic).

Valentine’s Day might be about flowers, chocolates, and romance – but in horror, love often leads to obsession, betrayal, and bloody revenge. With slasher thrills, supernatural hauntings, or twisted tales of doomed romance, horror movies set around love and relationships add an extra layer of intensity. Interestingly, horror movies that use romance as a device go right back to the origins of horror cinema, intertwining desire with thrills and kills.
For those who prefer their Valentine’s Day with a side of terror, we’ve rounded up the best horror films to watch on February 14th. These movies prove that sometimes, love doesn’t just break your heart – it rips it out.
The Best Valentine’s Day Horror Movies 1. My Bloody Valentine (1981 & 2009)
Few films embody Valentine’s Day horror better than My Bloody Valentine. This cult classic slasher follows a mining town plagued by a masked killer seeking revenge on Valentine’s Day.

The Castlevania animated series on Netflix has always worn its influences and inspirations on its sleeve, not being afraid of revealing them to the fans and the audience. But with the many sources to draw from, there is one that stands out.
Griffith from Berserk | Credits: Olm Team Iguchi
None have left as deep a mark as Berserk on the story and themes of Castlevania. From its dark fantasy setting to its brutal character arcs, the franchise definitely takes heavy inspiration from Kentaro Miura’s legendary manga.
In Castlevania, this influence becomes ever more clear, particularly in how the antagonists have their personalities on the dark side but seem justified from a perspective.

Quick LinksKeanu Reeves Starred in One Episode of Hangin' InDespite How Few People Remember Hangin' In, Reeves Became a Star
Today, Keanu Reeves is one of the most recognizable actors in the world. He may be best known for his incredible portrayal of John Wick, the expert Underworld assassin and main character of the ongoing John Wick franchise, but Reeves has been around for decades. Reeves has been in plenty of iconic franchises. He played Neo in The Matrix (1999), John Constantine in Constantine, and his latest film had him voicing Shadow the Hedgehog in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024).
Since Keanu Reeves is still such a popular movie star, it's hard to believe that he's been acting for over 40 years. Especially when one takes into consideration how youthful Keanu Reeves still looks and that he does a lot of his own stunts. Reeves was born in 1964, making him 60 years old, but he certainly doesn't look it.

A few months ago, legendary director and cinematic gatekeeper Martin Scorsese shared a recommendation for the horror film I Saw the TV Glow. Now, Scorsese has taken a moment to hype up another horror film, and this time it was The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu.
An unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the original Nosferatu has the following synopsis: In this highly influential silent horror film, the mysterious Count Orlok (Max Schreck) summons Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) to his remote Transylvanian castle in the mountains. The eerie Orlok seeks to buy a house near Hutter and his wife, Ellen (Greta Schroeder). After Orlok reveals his vampire nature, Hutter struggles to escape the castle, knowing that Ellen is in grave danger. Meanwhile Orlok’s servant, Knock (Alexander Granach), prepares for his master to arrive at his new home.

Coming after a major 2024 with the U.S. release of his blistering satire Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World (which nabbed a spot in our top 10) and the premiere of a pair of smaller-scale, experimental films, Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude is gearing up for quite a 2025. His forthcoming Dracula film will arrive before year’s end, but first Kontinental ’25 will make its world premiere in competition at the 2025 Berlinale. The film, debuting next Wednesday, starts with a sheriff’s bailey making a disastrous attempt to evict an old man from an abandoned building and follows her through an exploration of what it means to be both a Romanian and a European in 2025. Ahead of the premiere, we’re delighted to exclusively premiere the first poster.

Who's your favorite Batman villain? Most will say the Joker, some might say Catwoman or Bane, but there's options galore. Did you know, though, that within Batman's expansive rogues gallery also lies the original Bat-man? Yes, Count Dracula has appeared in three Batman movies — but you can only watch one of them.
This isn't as out-there a pairing as it looks. Batman mostly fights other freaks in costumes -- from clowns to cats, to scarecrows, to rejected quiz show hosts -- but some of the Dark Knight's nemeses are downright supernatural. Take Ra's al Ghul, the Demon's Head, who has stayed young and fit for 700 years with the help of the magical Lazarus Pit, a functional Fountain of Youth.

Who knew Netflix could deliver such an emotional father-son relationship? Castlevania has proven they can portray the nuances of complex familial bonds, especially when adapting from a different source. The exploration of Alucard and Dracula’s dynamic was incredible and fleshed out.
Dracula from Castlevania. [Credit: Netflix]
The main antagonist always disliked humanity but had a soft spot for his wife, Lisa. She was the one thing tethering him to sanity. They had a son, Alucard, one of the protagonists of Castlevania. However, this changed when she was killed after being accused of witchcraft.
Dracula wasn’t the same merciful vampire. He still gave the village a year to make peace with what they had done. He committed atrocities upon atrocities, forcing Alucard to take a stance against his father’s deeds. It wasn’t so black and white, however, even after years of his abuse.

When science-fiction and horror overlap, there is running and screaming, the towns people grab pitchforks and torches and the very idea of what it means to be human is called into question. At least, that’s what happens in some of the best movies that dip into both genres.
The age-old question of where the ethical line is in science and whether it should be crossed never ceases to generate new terrors as technology continues to develop. Killer cyborgs and androids? Out-of-control genetic mutation? Radiation-spawned monsters? All of these have have fueled some of our favorite sci-fi horror films.

Like any other gala, the Grammys saw many bizarre outfits with Jaden Smith seemingly topping them all. Will Smith’s son and After Earth co-star showed up to the event along with his sister Willow Smith in a suit, but his headpiece went viral. Inspired by a Transylvanian castle, Jaden’s headpiece was one of the highlights of the event.
As with any other viral moment, he received a lot of backlash and trolling from fans, with one fan calling out the rapper for the bizarre outfit and adding an offensive slur. However, the young rapper seemed to take it in stride and even gave a diplomatic thank you to the heckler.

The Netflix animated series adaptation of Castlevania has become a massive success, thanks to Sam and Adam Deats’ intricate research of the original video games. There’s not one point of lore the duo has missed, especially the former, who directed each episode from Season 1 to 4.

Despite the adaptation straying away from video games, it’s actually a breath of fresh air. Castlevania gets rid of all the slow-pacing, and all the complicated stuff isn’t in your control. Sam and Adam Deats make sure to streamline the story in a new way but retain the lore.
The directors acknowledge the diverse audience and cater the Netflix adaptation to both old and new fans alike, no matter where they are in the world. They also mix in the style of the original game designer, Ayami Kojima, and the fluidity of Japanese animation.

Count Orlok is shrouded in shadow for much of Nosferatu, so when his true face is revealed, it is intended to shock the audience.
Nosferatu is loosely based on Bram Stoker's Dracula, which in turn inspired the pivotal 1920s German expressionist film, Nosferatu: Symphony of the Night.
Robert Eggers' horror film stars Bill Skarsgård as the ancient vampire who stalks a newlywed couple, Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp) and Thomas (Nicholas Hoult), through Europe in the 1800s.

For over a century of cinema, monsters like werewolves and vampires have given audiences a non-stop slew of classic films, from Dracula and The Lost Boys to recent hits like Nosferatu. With Blumhouse producing their own take on The Wolf Man, audiences have been given a unique adaptation of a beloved monster. However, it's far from the only werewolf movie out there, with audiences being spoiled for choice when it comes to the iconic legend.
Werewolves have been at the forefront of horror and dark fantasy alike since the 1980s but can be difficult to pull off on the big screen -- especially in live-action. When the monster is done well, it can be the most terrifying thing on screen, and some movies have captured the sheer horror of its transformation and violent nature. After experiencing 2025's Wolf Man, audiences should look to these classics for a good follow-up.

At a time when mainstream horror movies are struggling to strike a chord with audiences, art-house fare such as Nosferatu has succeeded. The movie is now available to stream at home, but despite that, it continued to draw crowds to theaters in its sixth weekend of release. Nosferatu is within touching distance of a coveted domestic box office milestone, and its global haul has now earned it a spot on an elite list of blockbusters. Directed by Robert Eggers, Nosferatu is a remake of F.W. Murnau's German Expressionist classic from a century ago, which itself was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Ryan Coogler is one of the most exciting filmmakers working today. He's the rare writer/director who actually managed to make the jump from doing small independent movies to tackling massive blockbuster franchises without losing his style. Quite the contrary, in an era where the pipeline of Sundance darling to pawn in a superhero or big franchise machine has all but ruined the future of many a once-promising filmmaker, Coogler gave us not one but two exciting creative-driven properties.
First, he revitalized the "Rocky" franchise with the phenomenal "Creed," one of the best movies of the century and a nuanced and thrilling exploration of nature and nurture, with boxing thrown in for good measure. Coogler's legacy sequel approach worked wonders, kickstarting a trilogy, allowing Sylvester Stallone to do his best work in the franchise, and making Michael B. Jordan a star.
Next, Coogler went even bigger with "Black Panther" and "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Coogler's legacy sequel approach worked wonders, kickstarting a trilogy, allowing Sylvester Stallone to do his best work in the franchise, and making Michael B. Jordan a star.

The Valentine’s Day-set slasher movie Heart Eyes is set to reach theatres on February 7th – but that’s not the only horror movie that Cinemark theatres will be celebrating the holiday with. The cinema chain has revealed that they’ll be running a series called “Love You to Death” from February 1st through the 5th, bringing The Silence of the Lambs, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Midsommar, the 1981 slasher classic My Bloody Valentine, and Shaun of the Dead back to the big screen!
On the Love You to Death page, Cinemark writes, “Got a bleeding heart for horror? Our lineup of frightful flicks is swoon-worthy, with plenty of tortured love—and actual torture—to satisfy the most die-hard fans.“

If you're looking for a bloodsucking good time this February, Peacock has you covered...and then some. The streaming service has a plethora of vampire titles hitting its catalog on the first of the month, including the entire Blade and Twilight franchises, as well as a groundbreaking classic, and several underrated gems, all of which land on the streamer on February 1.
Love them or hate them, there's no denying the popularity and cultural impact of Twilight and its four sequels. Starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson and based on the bestselling novels by Stephenie Meyer, the films have collectively grossed over $3 billion worldwide. Critical and audience debate still rages over whether the movies are actually any good, something which star Pattinson is tired of hearing about. Of course, arguably there wouldn't be a Twilight without Interview with the Vampire, the 1994 film directed by Neil Jordan, from a script by original novel author Anne Rice.

Despite being considered one of the greatest actors of our time, his Oscar win for Darkest Hour sparked controversy surrounding the actor.

However, the controversy at the time had little to do with his performance, as it boiled down to the allegations of domestic abuse in the early 2000s after he parted ways with his then-wife Donya Fiorentino.
