Exclusive: Lexi Underwood (Cruel Summer), Case Walker (The Other Two) and Kat Cunning (Purple Hearts) have signed on to star in the feature film Bad Karaoke, a horror comedy from District 78 Films and Father Greg Productions. Shooting begins this month in LA.

The film follows a group of friends in a cover band making their way from Portland, Oregon, to perform at a wedding in Napa. When they discover an abandoned karaoke machine in the back of a dive bar, songwriter Emily (Underwood), bassist Noah (Walker), and their motley band crew must find a way to defeat the cursed machine before it finishes them all off.

Cunning plays the band’s lead singer Hannah, who has come to terms with their career as a cover band musician only to learn it might become the death of them.

The “Malcolm in the Middle” revival at Disney+ is building out its cast.

Variety has learned exclusively that Kiana Madeira is set to star in the series alongside previously announced returning cast members Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, and Jane Kaczmarek. The Disney Branded Television show was picked up for four episodes back in December.

Per the official logline, “Malcolm (Muniz) and his daughter are drawn into the family’s chaos when Hal (Cranston) and Lois (Kaczmarek) demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party.”

Madeira will play Tristan, described as “Malcolm’s charming and opinionated girlfriend who – by any rational standard – is way out of his league.”

Madeira is perhaps best known for her starring role in the “Fear Street” film trilogy at Netflix. Her other film credits include the “After” film franchise at Netflix — “After We Fell,” “After Ever Happy,” and “After Everything” — as well as “Brother” and “Perfect Addiction.

Best known for his role as Zahid in the Netflix comedy Atypical, Dodani will next be seen toplining Warner Bros’ horror comedy The Parenting opposite Lisa Kudrow, Brian Cox, and Edie Falco, which will release on Max.

Kiana Madeira has taken on the role of an iconic DC character by voicing Supergirl in the hit animated show My Adventures with Superman. A shift to the Dcu may not be outside the realm of possibility, and Madeira already knows who she'd most want to play.

On Reddit, Madeira fielded some fan questions in promotion of the show. She was asked about another role she'd want to play in James Gunn's Dcu, and it seems like it was an easy choice for her to pick Zatanna. There have been attempts in recent years to get a Zatanna project off the ground, but they never made their way out of development hell. If such a project gets underway at DC Studios anytime soon, Madeira will be hoping that Gunn will give her a call.

Rideback Rise, the 501c3 non-profit Bipoc content accelerator launched by producer Dan Lin to advance racial equity, has selected its inaugural cohort of 16 writers and filmmakers who will be financially and creatively supported as they seek to develop their own market-ready mainstream TV and film projects.

The cohort revealed Tuesday is composed of six “fellows” who will receive $50,000 grants for the year-long fellowship, and 10 “residents” who each receive $10,000 in funding. Fellows are additionally eligible to access an Intellectual Property Fund to secure underlying rights to material as well as a Visuals Fund to create presentations and reels for their projects.

Skydance Television has added Shelley Zimmerman and David Wolkis to its executive team in an effort to strengthen its creative development and physical production teams.

Zimmerman will serve as executive vice president and head of development, while Wolkis will serve as senior vice president of physical production.

In her new role, Zimmerman will be responsible for sourcing material, developing and packaging projects, maintaining oversight of overall deals, and shepherding series through all phases of production. Meanwhile, Wolkis will help oversee physical production on Skydance Television’s slate of series, including production finance and post-production.

It comes a year after Matt Thunell, the former Netflix exec who had a hand in the success of Stranger Things, replaced Bill Bost as President of Skydance Television.

Zimmerman was most recently President of Television Bad Attitude Entertainment, The Morning Show and Bates Motel exec producer Kerry Ehrin’s company. Before that, she was EVP, of the Live-Action Studio for Awesomeness and Nickelodeon, where she produced series including Netflix’s Trinkets and Hulu’s Pen15. She was also SVP, Scripted Programming at Warner Horizon where she oversaw such series as Pretty Little Liars on Freeform and TNT’s Dallas, and President of Television Development at Tollin/Robbins Productions, where she developed Smallville, One Tree Hill and What I Like About You.

Master Gardener has a small, but well-known cast. The film, written and directed by Paul Schrader, had its premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival. It’s finally being released in theaters, and it brings with it the talents of the cast, led by Joel Edgerton in the titular role.

Master Gardener follows the title character as he works to be redeemed for his past crimes, mentors a young woman, and keeps his head down as he appreciates the land that he cultivates on a daily basis. Ahead of the film’s release, it received mostly positive reviews from critics. Schrader gathered a good cast to star in the movie, a mixture of famous actors and others who are lesser-known. After a long wait, Black Adam finally premiered in movie theaters on Friday, October 21st, and the Dceu fandom couldn't be more excited. The antihero movie portrays Teth Adam (or Black Adam), played by Dwayne Johnson, a formerly enslaved man with the powers of six ancient deities that turned him into their Champion.

One of the aspects people have enjoyed more about the movie is its amazing cast, with great actors such as The Rock, Pierce Brosnan, and Noah Centineo. Black Adam will be the first exclusively theatrical release for the Dceu since Birds of Prey, which found its way to streaming soon after its release due in large part to the coronavirus. Black Adam has been in the works for years, but after its struggles to make it through to its final stages, it's finally been released.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has been attached to the movie as its lead for years, but it took some time for the production to fill out the rest of the cast. With that time, they were able to stack the cast with new and familiar faces that will bring to life some of DC's lesser known characters.

Paul Schrader woke up in New Orleans with four days of shooting left on his new movie, “Master Gardener,” when he thought he was going to die. He had severe breathing problems and trouble seeing out of his left eye, so he decided to get up and go to work.

“I knew if I called 911, those bastards would never let me out of the hospital, and the film would not be finished,” Schrader said. “So I lay there in bed and said, ‘Well, maybe I won’t wake up tomorrow — but would I rather not wake up tomorrow or wake up in the hospital room, knowing I can’t finish my film?’ And so I made my decision.”

The polls are officially open for the 2022 Primetime Emmys, but voters will notice a somewhat glaring omission when they begin to fill out their ballots: Netflix’s acclaimed charmer Heartstopper is Mia.

A Netflix rep tells TVLine that the decision was made to submit the rookie dramedy in the newly-created Children’s & Family Emmys, which is slated to launch later this year after having previously been folded into the Daytime Emmys ceremony. It’s there that Heartstopper will be submitted in all Young Teen categories.

“Heartstopper” fans might have actual heart attacks on Thursday, June 16, when Primetime Emmy voting starts with the Netflix sleeper hit absent from the ballots. Netflix told Gold Derby exclusively that they’re submitting the breakout teen dramedy to the Best Young Adult Series category at the Children’s and Family Emmys, where it will also be eligible for categories that recognize performers, writers, directors and crafts.

Cobra Kai breakout Peyton List is going to topline her own show for Paramount+.

The Paramount Global-backed streamer has handed out an eight-episode, straight-to-series order for School Spirits, a young adult drama based on the upcoming graphic novel by Nate and Megan Trinrud and Maria Nguyen.

The series revolves around a teen (List) who is stuck in the afterlife who decides to investigate her mysterious disappearance alongside a group of other students who are also stuck in limbo at their high school.

Oliver Goldstick, who exec produced the former Freeform mega-hit YA series Pretty Little Liars, will serve as showrunner on School Spirits. The graphic novel’s sibling duo the Trinruds will pen the script for the pilot and exec produce alongside Goldstick. Max Winkler will direct the pilot for School Spirits, which is awaiting a premiere date on Paramount+.

Fox Entertainment has named HaJ, Allison Jackson, Michelle Lesley Johnson and Nicole Jones-Dion the Fellows for its 2022 Fox Writers Incubator initiative. The four writers were selected from over 1300 submissions.

The Fox Writers Incubator seeks to support diverse and creative voices and provide training the four writers across all genres ranging from comedy, drama and animation. Fox revealed the fellows on Thursday.

BBC Studios, the commercial arm of U.K. broadcaster BBC, has promoted Rebecca Glashow to the newly created role of CEO, global distribution. Glashow will take up the position on March 1, when she also becomes a member of the organization’s executive committee.

Glashow previously held the post of president, BBC Studios Americas, from June 2020, overseeing the strategy and performance of the company’s commercial activities in the U.S., Canada and Latin America. She was responsible for the launch of documentary streaming service BBC Select and BBC Podcasts and in September, oversight of global digital news was added to her responsibilities.
