The character of Kal is specifically named after Kal-El, otherwise known as Superman, the fact of which is specifically mentioned more than once in the movie, with both main characters being major fans of the character of Superman. Both the Christopher Reeve portrayals of Superman, and the Henry Cavill portrayals of Superman are mentioned, and several clips from Superman (1978) are featured when the two main characters attend a theatrical screening of the film. Additionally, second lead Michael Cassidy, who portrays the character of Kal, appears in Batman v Superman : L'Aube de la justice (2016), portraying Jimmy Olsen.
