Sailor Moon is the defining magical girl anime. While there are many, many beloved entries in the genre, there is just something about Usagi and her journey that has managed to have lovers of glitter and transformation sequences in a choke hold for over 30 years. Sailor Moon and the Sailor Scouts have always been more than a little cutting-edge when it comes to their stories, tackling themes and concepts that would feel more at home in something like Puella Magi Madoka Magica. But, that is when fans need to remember that those darker series took a lot of their DNA from the Pretty Guardian herself.
The magical girl genre is one of the oldest anime genres out there, even before Sailor Moon came onto the scene to codify the canon of expectations for magical girl tropes. This also means that the earlier entries become more surprising. There is an understanding...

Tyrion Lannister is a complicated character, and perhaps one of the most profound in Game of Thrones for his various contributions. Shunned by his family, he is forced into exile to avoid the brunt their prejudice. He proves his intelligence and political acumen at several points throughout the HBO series, especially while serving under Daenerys as the Hand of the Queen.
It's not really a stretch to claim Tyrion as one of the prime movers of the storyline. That said, there are an embarrassingly large number of occasions in which he has behaved in an uncharacteristically shortsighted manner. In Tyrion's defense, he is a human being at the end of the day, but a few of these instances are downright preposterous.
Updated by Jordan Iacobucci on February 24, 2025: Tyrion Lannister may be the smartest character in Game of Thrones, but in a world like Westeros, that doesn't always mean too much.

It’s that time of year again. While some directors annually share their favorite films of the year, Steven Soderbergh lists everything he consumed, media-wise. One of the Terminator franchise's biggest commercial disappointments has found streaming success on Netflix. Since the first movie was released in 1984, there have been six Terminator movies and two television series in the long-running franchise. The franchise's first movie, directed and written by James Cameron, set the tone and established Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, along with presenting the now iconic characters of Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese.
The first sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, is widely considered to be the franchise's best movie, along with being one of the best all-time movie sequels. None of the ensuing movies, released from 2003-2019, were able to reach the same level of acclaim as the original two installments. The franchise expanded onto television with Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which aired from 2008-2009, along with Terminator Zero, an anime series that debuted on Netflix in 2024.

Michael Keaton's action thriller that made only $8.7 million at the box office in 2021 becomes a global Netflix hit three years later. After gaining recognition for his comedic performance in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice in 1988, Keaton rose to greater fame for his portrayal of the iconic superhero in Burton's Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992). In the following years, Keaton starred in various comedies and dramas, such as Clean and Sober, Much Ado About Nothing, The Paper, Multiplicity, Jack Frost, Herbie: Fully Loaded, and The Other Guys.
Keaton's career saw a resurgence in 2014 after starring in Birdman, playing a washed-up actor seeking a comeback and earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. The upcoming Doctor Who spinoff, The War Between The Land and the Sea, is inspired by the "Cold Blood" storyline from the fifth season. The show may bring back the Silurians, as the Sea Devils are distant relatives, hinting at a possible connection to the main series. While drawing inspiration from "Cold Blood," the spinoff will need to make major changes to avoid copying the original ending.
The War Between The Land and the Sea is an upcoming spinoff in the world of Doctor Who, following the Sea Devils as they are brought into conflict with the human race. The show was announced by Doctor Whos showrunner Russell T. Davies at San Diego Comic-Con in 2024, where the two lead actors Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw were also revealed. Details about The War Between The Land and the Sea are still sparse, but the plot seems very similar to another story in Doctor Whos past.

Doctor Who will tap into its environmentalist history in the new five-part BBC One/Disney+ spinoff announced by showrunner Russell T Davies at Sdcc 2024. The long-rumoured Sea Devils show will concern “a race that lives beneath the oceans,” who awaken to see their underwater home in a perilous state due to humanity’s actions.
“We have wrecked the place,” explained Davies at last Friday’s Hall H Doctor Who panel, “and it is war.”
Fighting that war “on an epic scale” will be Unit, headed up in its current incarnation by Kate Lethbridge Stewart (Jemma Redgrave) and her secret honey/Squad Five colonel Christopher Ibrahim (Alexander Devrient). The following contains minor spoilers for Demon Slayer.
As a proper shonen action anime, Demon Slayer is packed with deadly and exciting villains for heroes like Tanjiro Kamado to fight. These villains nearly all of them demons vary a great deal in their powers, abilities, appearance, and backstories. They also vary somewhat in how evil they are, since a few demons are either relatively tame or never had a chance to prove how wicked and horrible they are.
Regardless of powers and abilities, some Demon Slayer villains are much crueler and more vicious than others, meaning some have the true heart of a villain while others are just going through the motions as antagonists for the demon slayers to fight. True acts of evil are nearly impossible to forgive or forget, such as abusing the weak, turning friends against each other, or creating sorrow and misery for the fun of it.

Exclusive: On April 18th of this year, at a parole board hearing in New Hampshire, convicted murderer James Parker was granted parole for his role in the brutal 2001 stabbing murders of Half and Suzanne Zantop, a pair of married Dartmouth professors. After acquiring rights to Judgment Ridge, a work of nonfiction detailing the chilly story of those murders, producers Randy and Steven Toll have enlisted Matthew Gentile (American Murderer) to direct a feature adaptation from his own script.
Written by Dick Lehr and Mitchell Zuckoff, Judgment Ridge evokes clear memories of Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood, as it delves deeply into the inexplicable behavior that led to these ruthless murders. It was at age 16 that Parker conspired with his best friend to commit the murders of the Zantrops. Created by Ryan Murphy and Jaffe Cohen, Feud season 2 is a fictional retelling of a real-life American novelist and screenwriter, Truman Capote, and his group of socialite friends, or maybe we’d better call them frenemies. These two episodes depicted the beginning of Truman’s friendship with his group of socialites, whom he used to call the swans. Even though Truman Capote was well appreciated by his swans, a feud among them marked the beginning of the end of their relationship. Let’s see what led Truman to cut his ties with his swans.

I remember exactly where I was when I discovered Philip Seymour Hoffman had died. I was at a revival screening of the 1979 version of Battlestar: Galactica at a Montreal theatre, waiting for the film to start when my email blew up. Here at JoBlo, whenever an icon dies, it tends to become a thread that allows us all to vent a little, and Hoffman’s death destroyed many of us.
It shook me up in a lot of ways, as I had just seen him at the Sundance Film Festival a few weeks earlier, where he had two films, A Most Wanted Man and God’s Pocket. In hindsight, it’s easy to say he didn’t look quite right, but honestly, I had no clue anything was wrong with him. Plot: Acclaimed writer Truman Capote surrounded himself with a coterie of society’s most elite women – rich, glamorous socialites who defined a bygone era of high society New York – whom he nicknamed “the swans.” Enchanted and captivated by these doyennes, Capote ingratiated himself into their lives, befriending them and becoming their confidante, only to ultimately betray them by writing a thinly veiled fictionalization of their lives, exposing their most intimate secrets. When an excerpt from the book, Answered Prayers, Capote’s planned magnum opus, was published in Esquire, it effectively destroyed his relationship with his swans, banished him from the high society he so loved and sent him into a spiral of self-destruction from which he would ultimately never recover.

Murphy and Tunstall businesses had been competing in Lincoln County for too long, which forced the drunkard Murphy and the superior Sante Fe Ring led by powerful New Mexico landowner Thomas Catron to take matters, and the law itself, into their own hands.

Death is not permanent for many companions on Doctor Who, with characters like Amy Pond, Rory Williams, and Clara Oswald experiencing multiple deaths and coming back to life. Time travel complicates the concept of death on the show, with characters dying before their own births or during events that are later reversed or wiped from existence. Despite the dangers they face, the Doctor always tries their best to save their companions, even if they can't save everyone. Amy, Rory, and Clara all have bittersweet endings but find some form of peace in the afterlife.
Doctor Who has seen many companions over its 60-year run, and several of them have stared death in the face and sent it away, but there are some of these supporting characters who have in fact died and then come back to life. Death isn't an unusual concept in Doctor Who. Even when the Doctor tries...

Kix played their final concert ever on Sunday night (September 17th) at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland — just down the road from the band’s home city of Baltimore.
The hard rock vets were joined by former guitarists Ronnie Younkins and Brad Divens for what proved to be a celebratory, career-spanning set.
All of Kix’s biggest hits from their MTV glam-metal glory days were included in the set, most notably cuts from 1985’s Midnite Dynamite (“Midnite Dynamite”; “Scarlet Fever”; “Cold Shower”) and 1988’s Blow My Fuse.
Early in the set, Younkins joined the band onstage for the first two songs (“Atomic Bombs” and “The Kid”) before Divens took part in renditions of early Kix material (“For Shame” and “Mighty Mouth”) hailing from his stint in the band (1982-1983). Younkins and Divens then formed a triple-guitar attack with longtime Kix axeman Brian Forsythe for the four-song finale.

As players walk the streets of Night City as V in Cyberpunk 2077, an overpowered character build that can deliver a quick and often deadly response to the city’s many dangers is essential. Players can combine Weapons, Armor, Cyberware, Stats, and Perks to build V exactly how they want, whether it’s a street-smart blade-wielding samurai, a quick and quiet Netrunner operating from stealth, or a tough brute who lets their Gorilla Arms do all the talking.
Players have dozens of possible overpowered character builds, ranging from building Cyberpunk Edgerunners’ David Martinez to pumping points into Cyberpunk 2077’s best Melee Annihilation build. There’s no single build that outshines all the others, making it tricky for players to settle on just one. However, a jack-of-all-trades build for V that combines elements of stealth, gun combat, and the Monowire gives players the flexibility to respond well to any situation. Players should...

Michael James Gubitosi, more famously known as Robert Blake, died at the age of 89 in Los Angeles from heart disease. The news comes from Blake's niece Noreen Austin and was reported by Deadline. Blake was a Hollywood lifer, getting his start as a child in the MGM film "Bridal Suite" before assuming the role of Porky in the "Our Gang" and "The Little Rascals" shorts from 1939 to 1944. He continued performing well into his teen years, taking a brief hiatus in his 20s after he was drafted into the United States Army.
Blake reportedly developed a severe substance abuse problem in the years that followed but turned back to acting to get his life on track. He re-emerged playing more adult, dramatic roles, appearing in films like "Treasure of the Sierra Madre," "In Cold Blood," and a string of studio Westerns under the stage name "Bobby Blake." Amy and Rory’s relationship was among the highlights of Matt Smith’s tenure as the Doctor on Doctor Who, bringing a much-needed romance and compassion to the show despite a complex timeline. Their relationship went through many stages, following the couple as they attempted to balance their complicated marriage with the exciting world of traveling with the Doctor. The two lives didn’t always fit together perfectly, but Amy and Rory managed to make it work for the sake of their friend.
Unlike the other incarnations of the Doctor that preceded him, Smith’s Doctor spent the overwhelming majority of his time with Amy and Rory. They developed a bond unlike anything he’d ever experienced before (at least platonically), which is why their relationship was so important to him. Amy and Rory experienced several sad moments and tragic failures in their relationship, but it was their unbreakable bond...

Doctor Who’s “The Pandorica Opens” introduced one of the most dangerous and intimidating villains in the entire show: The Pandorica Alliance. Composed of the Doctor’s greatest enemies and the most powerful warrior races in the universe, the Alliance was the universe’s final push to bring the Doctor down for good. Doctor Who often sees the Doctor and his companions traveling across time and space in pursuit of protecting the universe, and while he’s come across plenty of threatening aliens throughout his lives, it’s not often that those monsters use their shared hatred of the Time Lord to band together.
The Pandorica Alliance included some of Doctor Who’s scariest aliens and most formidable fighters, truly posing a threat to the Doctor for the first time in a long while. “The Pandorica Opens” marked the conclusion of the show’s fifth season, bringing together all the...

Rory Williams was a close companion of the Eleventh Doctor throughout his time on Doctor Who, but his adventurous spirit often found him crossing paths with death. Though none of these deaths were actually permanent, Rory often found himself in trouble thanks to his unwavering loyalty to his wife, Amy Pond. The pair traveled with the Doctor for several years, and although most of their adventures were harmless, they often found themselves on hostile planets with creatures that wanted to see them dead. And unfortunately for Rory, he was usually the first one to fall.
Eventually, Amy and Rory left Doctor Who in season 7 after they were "killed" by the Weeping Angels in the highly emotional episode “The Angels Take Manhattan." While the Doctor had always been able to revive Rory by rewriting the laws of the universe and exploiting his time-traveling abilities, a dangerous paradox prevented him from saving his friends on this occasion.

The third feature by Ali Mosaffa will probe the hidden corners where the histories of Iran and the former Czechoslovakia intersect. Iranian filmmaker Ali Mosaffa, a Karlovy Vary International Film Festival regular, introduced his latest project, Absence, during the festival’s virtual industry strand, Kviff Eastern Promises. Both of Mosaffa’s two previous features bowed in the main competition at Kviff: Portrait of a Lady Far Away (2005) and The Last Step (2012). Mosaffa wrote and is producing, starring in and directing Absence, which is described as a mystical thriller and is being made as a co-production between Iran, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The film’s protagonist arrives in Prague from Tehran to find out more about his father’s past as a communist expatriate in Czechoslovakia. Jean Reno in the thriller Cold Blood. Photo credit: Screen Media
French action star Jean Reno re-teams with Thierry Arbogast, the cinematographer on La Femme Nikita and,The Fifth Element, for action thriller Cold Blood. In this English-language French-Ukrainian film, Jean Reno plays a legendary hit man, the kind of role he has played well many times. With the help of cinematographer Arbogast, stunning locations, and a good supporting cast, they do their best to add style and suspense to this action thriller. Unfortunately, it is not enough to overcome the messy, nonsensical script.
Reno plays a retired hit man living in a remote cabin in Washington State when a young woman (Sara Lind), who has been injured in a snowmobile accident, suddenly turns up nearly on his doorstep. The presence of Jean Reno in Cold Blood is undoubtedly meant to invoke memories of better movies like Leon: The Professional and Nikita. Sadly, that only exacerbates how poor this is. Cold Blood is a cliched and thoroughly mediocre action flick, trafficking almost exclusively in plot points we’ve seen done before, and better. Reno looks bored, the filmmaking is indifferent, and the 90 minute running time drags by. It’s the sort of project that you can’t figure out why it got the green light? Who wanted to see this? The folks involved barely seemed like they wanted to make it. It’s just an absolute slog to get though. The film is a mix of action, drama, and mystery, though it doesn’t do any of that particularly well. When a snowmobile crashes in a secluded area, a young woman (Sarah Lind) is hurt. Dragging herself away from the wreck,...

Spider-Man: Far from Home is weaving an expansive web over the Fourth of July holiday frame, pushing new specialties to find space in upcoming weeks. There are a few brave indies hoping to grab some residuals over the long weekend, however. Sundance doc Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love will launch in several L.A. and New York locations. Distributor Roadside Attractions is hoping to ride a wave of music docs that have scored well in the box office with summer rollouts in recent years. Thriller Skin in the Game dramatizes the human trafficking in America. Specialty label Kandoo Films, which also produced the title, is releasing it day-and-date. Gravitas Ventures, meanwhile, is spearheading on-demand for the Armed Forces action-drama Above the Best. The producers are organizing limited theatrical events/showings for the feature, including one this weekend in Houston.

As the minutes slowly tick by in the lifeless thriller “Cold Blood,” it’s easy to mourn for what might have been. Jean Reno stars as Henry, a veteran hitman seeking isolation in a remote cabin in the Pacific Northwest, which could have made for a contemplative and melancholy reimagining of his signature role in Luc Besson’s “Léon: The Professional.” When Henry is forced to care for a mysterious, injured woman who interrupts his solitude, one envisions a close-quarters psychological cat-and-mouse game between two dangerous and deeply secretive people. It turns out we get neither of those, just a bland and forgettable B-movie that came and went quickly in France last May and looks to do the same upon its day-and-date release in the U.S.
Reno, who turns 71 this month, hasn’t burned through the credibility he amassed with the cool kids during his long-ago career peak working with Besson.

If you’re a fan of actor Jean Reno (The Professional), you might be interested in checking out his new action thriller Cold Blood. The first trailer has been released for the movie, and it looks like it will be a pretty good action flick!
The film tells the story of a legendary hitman named Henry, who “retires in isolation to the barren North American wilderness. When he rescues a woman from a snowmobile accident, he discovers she may be harboring a secret that could force a return to his lethal ways.” I guess retirement for Henry doesn’t go as planned as he has to decide whether or not to risk his own life to save this woman.
The movie also stars Sarah Lind as Melody, Joe Anderson, David Gyasi, Ihor Ciszkewycz, François Guétary, and Samantha Bond.
The movie was directed by Frédéric Petitjean and it will be released on July 5th.

"Tell me where she is!" Screen Media Films has released the official Us trailer for the indie action thriller titled Cold Blood, originally titled Cold Blood Legacy for its French release just last month.
