Since the original Die Hard took the world by storm in 1988, it has inspired countless sequels and knock-offs. Often built around the same basic premise, these films have become a sub-genre in their own right. From Die Hard 2: Die Harder set in an airport, to Under Siege on a naval vessel, Passenger 57 on a plane, and even Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down in the White House, the formula has been repeated in various locations, with a lone hero taking on the bad guys and saving the hostages.

Ben Affleck’s Christina Wolff is finally back in the official trailer for The Accountant 2. After nearly a full decade since the first film crashed into theaters, the follow-up looks to continue the story of the socially awkward, mathematical genius who made his bank account sing with the money of criminals. With Gavin O’Connor (The Way Back) returning to the helm, and Affleck reprising his role as the titular counter, the film is also filled with plenty of familiar faces from the original flick, including Jon Bernthal (The Bear), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) and Cynthia Addai-Robinson (The People We Hate at the Wedding), many of whom viewers will spot in today’s teaser. After the first movie earned a staggering $155.2 million at the global box office, the sequel hopes to follow in its shoes, and deliver the same kind of mad money for MGM.

Actress and producer Kristen Bell will host the upcoming SAG Awards, honoring the best in acting, the organization announced on Monday.
The star of “Nobody Wants This,” “The Good Place” and “Veronica Mars,” Bell is returning to host for her second time, after taking the helm in 2018 when she was the first-ever host. The show is often run without a host — Megan Mullally (in 2019) and Idris Elba (in 2024) are the only other emcees in the ceremony’s 31-year history.
“Kristen Bell’s wit, warmth and charm makes her the perfect fit for our show — a night celebrating actors and the outstanding performances of the year,” SAG Awards executive producer Jon Brockett said in a Monday statement.” Plus, everybody wants this.”

“Hot Frosty” has come to life on Netflix, and yes, you’ve definitely swooned over him before. But, if you’re having trouble placing him, don’t worry, we got you.
Now streaming, the movie follows Kathy (Lacey Chabert) and Jack (Dustin Milligan) as they fall in love in a little town called Hope Springs. The thing is, Jack is a snowman. Yes, actually. He comes to life after Kathy unwittingly gives him a magic scarf, and he spends the rest of the movie wooing her while also trying desperately not to melt.
And he’s pretty good at that wooing. That’s because, as we mentioned above, he’s played by Dustin Milligan.
Odds are, you’ll most immediately recognize the actor as Ted Mullens, from “Schitt’s Creek.” He was a local veterinarian that Alexis Rose (Annie Murphy) quickly fell for in town. So obviously, he’s not exactly...

Netflix’s next Christmas movie offering of 2024 has arrived, and it might make you melt. Or it might heat you up. Or … both?
“Hot Frosty” is now streaming, following the love story of Kathy and Jack. Their meet cute? Kathy unintentionally brings Jack to life with a magic scarf — because he’s a snowman. Yes, seriously. They spend the movie navigating his secret, all while he attempts to not melt into a literal puddle. Again, seriously.
That said, it’s pretty delightful, and it definitely has a pretty stacked cast. Here are the major players you’ll recognize.

Netflix's popular new romantic comedy show, Nobody Wants This, gave Adam Brody a rom-com comeback I was absolutely delighted to see. In Nobody Wants This, Brody plays Rabbi Noah, who ends up falling for Joanne (Kristen Bell), a sex and relationships podcast host. There is a true story behind Nobody Wants This, although Bell and Brody certainly bring something special to their roles, as do several other Nobody Wants This cast members.
This was particularly delightful to see, as Adam Brody has had a nearly two-decades-long hiatus from major romantic comedy roles such as this one. By comparison, Kristen Bell has been in several romantic comedies prior to Nobody Wants This, including as recently as 2022 with The People We Hate at the Wedding. Brody's stellar performance in Nobody Wants This and his older roles from the 2000s make it clear that it's time for Brody to take on more of these roles,...

Kristen Bell is back in the world of television with her new series “Nobody Wants This,” and it’s something that we actually very much do want. But it’s easy to binge, and you might be feeling a Kristen Bell-shaped hole in your life when you finish.
Well, the good news is that there is no shortage of excellent projects of hers to revisit to fill that hole. From “The Good Place” all the way back to “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” her catalog is deep. But worry not, we’ve narrowed it down for you.
Here are five of the best Kristen Bell performances to watch once you’ve finished “Nobody Wants This.”

The longest-serving actor on Law & Order is set to work his last case.
Sam Waterston, who has been part of the NBC drama since 1994, is leaving the show. His final episode as Manhattan District Attorney Jack McCoy is set to air Feb. 22. Tony Goldwyn (Scandal, Oppenheimer) will then join Law & Order as the new Da.
The 83-year-old Waterston joined L&o at the beginning of its fifth season. He’ll depart partway through his 19th season on the series, having appeared in more than 400 episodes as McCoy, who began on the series as an assistant district attorney. The character was appointed interim Da in season 17 and was revealed to have won the elected position of district attorney in the 20th and final season of the show’s original 1990-2010 run. Waterston reprised the character when NBC revived Law & Order in 2022, serving as a link to the original show.

The Best Comedy Series Casting Emmy category is one where repeat wins should generally not be expected, since the only show to achieve that feat in well over a decade was “Veep” in 2016 and 2017. Most of Gold Derby’s participating users seem to have kept this in mind while making their 2023 Emmy picks, given that former casting winners “Ted Lasso” (2021) and “Abbott Elementary” (2022) are trailing new shows “The Bear” and “Jury Duty” in the current race. However, there is still no obvious consensus among them as to which freshman series will actually take the gold.
The final slot in this year’s comedy casting lineup is filled by “Only Murders in the Building,” which, like “Abbott Elementary,” was first recognized here last year. After 2000, 2007, and 2021, this is only the fourth time that every nominated show in this category consists of no more than three seasons. In addition to “Ted Lasso,...

Adam Brody is headed to Netflix.
The Shazam! Fury of the Gods actor will star alongside Kristen Bell in an untitled comedy from creator Erin Foster (Barely Famous) and executive producer Steven Levitan (Modern Family, Reboot). The series is “centered on the unlikely relationship between an outspoken, agnostic woman (Bell) and an unconventional rabbi (Brody),” the logline reads.

Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) has come on board to direct.
Written by Smolinski, Motherland centers on Julia (the role Kemper has been in talks for over the past several weeks), a working mom for whom nothing is working so she goes looking for her village. With the help of new friends Calvin (Soni) and Liz, Julia discovers she just might succeed at balancing work and parenting from time to time. This is a comedy for anybody who’s dropped their kids at school, breathed a sigh of relief…then realized it’s Sunday.

Netflix has greenlighted an untitled comedy series created and executive produced by Erin Foster, starring and executive produced by Kristen Bell and executive produced by Steven Levitan. It comes from 20th Television where sisters Erin and Sara Foster have a pod deal and Levitan is under an overall deal.
This is believed to be the first series order for a 20th TV show at Netflix since the studio became part of Disney as media congloms are starting to shift their focus from exclusively supplying their own streamers to profitability. The Noel Diary, like the best romantic comedies and Christmas movies, manages to blend together romance and comedy. Focusing as it does on two people, Jake and Rachel, who embark on a journey of self-discovery and reckoning with the past, it has all the ingredients one would expect from a Christmas rom-com.
It partakes in many of the generic elements of the romantic comedy, even as it gives them a fresh spin and grounds its story in its compelling characters. For those who love movies that manage to stay true to the conventions of the romantic comedy while also providing a little something extra, there are several great films to watch.

The recent rise of anti-Semitism in public discourse — driven in large part by Kanye West — has so alarmed President Joe Biden that he took to Twitter on Dec. 2. “The Holocaust happened. Hitler was a demonic figure,” he wrote. “Silence is complicity.”
When THR crossed paths with Ben Platt recently, he said the same.
“This kind of thing seems to be appropriate for a lot of people to pass over and not comment. As a Jew, I really notice all of the silence,” said the actor and performer, now starring in Prime Video’s The People We Hate at the Wedding.
That said, he adds, “If anyone happens to read this and wants to say something, either through a simple or even passive showing of support, it means a lot to Jewish people right now who are feeling a little left in the lurch.

A wedding without some sort of drama is hardly a real wedding, and the star-studded cast and characters of The People We Hate At The Wedding certainly deliver on that front. Based on the book of the same name by Grant Grinder, The People We Hate At The Wedding was released on the streaming platform Prime Video by Amazon Studios on November 19, 2022. Initial reviews of the film are largely indifferent at best, pointing to the larger phenomenon of comedy movies becoming a dying form in Hollywood.

The People We Hate at the Wedding is a comedy movie directed by Claire Scanlon, starring Kristen Bell, Allison Janney and Tony Goldwyn.
Weddings tend to be the kind of celebration where everybody tries to be at their best and everything has to go smoothly, but end up being events where nothing turns out as planned. In this movie both in its story, and its cinematic representation, we are witnessing more or less the same tendency.

“The People We Hate at the Wedding” gave fans a surprise mini-reunion of “The Good Place,” with the unexpected appearance of D’Arcy Carden in the Kristen Bell-starring comedy. But according to Bell, there was no one else she’d have wanted for the moment.
It happens fairly early in the movie, now streaming on Prime Video, and quite suddenly. In the scene, Alice (Bell) is leaving a sultry note for her boss/lover. She’s hoping to leave the panties she’s wearing with the note but as she goes to take them off, a cleaning woman appears to water the boss’ plants. That woman, of course, is none other than D’Arcy Carden. And she’s not phased by what’s happening at all. In fact, she just wants to help.
She jokes that the problem Alice is facing is that she accidentally only put one leg through...

For those used to approaching movies as entertainment and wanting to branch out into engaging with them as works of art, Andrew Bujalski's There There is not a bad place to start. The film is as stripped back as it gets, structured as a series of two-person scenes in single locations (with semi-musical interludes between them) and very little else provided to distract from them. The consequence of this approach is to bring the most essential artistic questions inherent in the cinematic medium to the fore, making it virtually possible not to experience it as an artwork. Mileage may vary between the vignettes, but even if There There isn't a life-changing experience, there's something exciting about being activated in this way as a viewer, and something admirable about the ease with which the film does it.

If you grew up with siblings of any kind, you'll certainly find The People We Hate at the Wedding to be equal parts relatable and awkward. Kristen Bell and Ben Platt lead the romantic comedy as a pair of siblings who begrudgingly attend their half-sister's (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) wedding, despite their pent-up resentment that her life appears to be so much better than theirs. Allison Janney also stars as their well-meaning mother with whom I absolutely share a resentment at my new-found travel anxiety. The People We Hate at the Wedding is a perfectly nice rom-com that's a bit predictable, but in that way that's absolutely comforting; despite a few twists and turns, you know exactly where this story is headed from the jump, and you feel good about it when you get there.

No joke: Claire Scanlon knows what’s funny. The seasoned comedy director and editor has helmed episodes of everything from “The Good Place” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” to “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Bless This Mess.” She produced “Last Comic Standing.” She edited “American Masters” episodes about Bob Newhart and Carol Burnett.
And she, in no small part, helped herald the re-emergence of the rom-com thanks to her 2018 smash Netflix film “Set It Up.”
Ever-busy (the director generously Zoomed with IndieWire from the very first day of production on ABC’s new sitcom “Not Dead Yet”), Scanlon is back in the film groove with another streaming feature: Amazon’s ensemble comedy “The People We Hate at the Wedding.” And while she said she was offered “a lot” of rom-coms after the success of “Set It Up,” she’s still working through her feelings on the genre. Prime Video debuted the film ‘The People We Hate At The Wedding’, a romantic comedy about two dysfunctional American siblings (Alice and Paul) who use the British wedding of their estranged half-sister as an opportunity to reconnect with each other and rediscover the love they once shared. Kristen Bell, the lead in the film, stars as the chaotic main character Alice. The fact that she is having an affair with her married employer, that she refuses to settle down, and that she is stuck in a job she hates only makes things worse. The film takes you on a thrilling ride with all of its unexpected turns.
Kristen Bell while talking about the film, says, “It is biting, it is whip smart, it is raunchy, but there is this familial joy about it. And I liked the idea of being involved with something where someone could escape and sit and watch this with their family.

The term “romantic comedy” these days covers a lot of light entertainments that only notionally meet the genre requirements: They pivot on relationships while just glancing at romance, and are packed with dialogue that’s zappily delivered but not all that funny. “The People We Hate at the Wedding” is one such nonromcom. Sporting a game cast and efficient sitcommy pacing, it looks and sounds the part just enough to keep you diverted — until you notice, as the credits roll to upbeat electropop, that you haven’t laughed once. Starring Kristen Bell, Ben Platt and Allison Janney as the blundering American relatives lowering the tone of a posh English wedding, this straight-to-streaming Amazon release attempts to bring a faintly risqué, expletive-laden millennial sensibility to Nancy Meyers terrain, and never quite finds the sweet spot.

The first scene Kristen Bell shot in Claire Scanlon’s new comedy, The People We Hate at the Wedding, is one that more than a few might describe as a bit of a nightmare.
“It was 7 a.m. and they threw me in the Thames River,” Bell explained with a smile on Wednesday night while standing on the red carpet in Westwood, host of the Prime Video premiere. “That river is neither warm nor clean but the minute we were done with that scene, we realized, oh, the rest of the movie is going to be a breeze.”
Call it a reward for a dirty job done early, the rest of Bell’s experience on the film played like a “dream come true.” That was thanks, in large part, to her co-stars. Based on the book by Grant Ginder and penned by writer-producer...

The invitation is extravagant: sturdy paper, elegant typeface, a hint of rosemary perfume. On it a generous request, although to Alice (Kristen Bell) and Paul (Ben Platt), it reads as a threat: The pleasure of their company? To celebrate the marriage of their rich half-sister, Eloise (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) to her equally wealthy fiancé Ollie (House of the Dragon’s John MacMillan)? “It would be an honor to have you there,” says the accompanying handwritten note. Alice and Paul — fierce in their disdain for their estranged sibling, dramatic in their expressions — would rather set themselves on fire.
But they won’t. They will fly to London, where Eloise lives, and attend the wedding. They will acknowledge their sibling’s nuptials and make small talk with her future in-laws. They will show up in the most literal sense of the phrase, but they certainly won’t be happy about it.

A short, patchy, straight-to-streaming piece of semi-amusing content that tries to fit several different romantic-comedies into a single movie that doesn’t have the bandwidth (or the interest) to mine any of them for major sources of romance or comedy, .
Some of them should be so lucky.
At one point, during what can only be described as the worst bachelorette party ever conceived in movies and/or real life, Kristen Bell is submerged in the River Thames on a crisp fall afternoon while dressed in nothing but an American flag bikini (and that’s before the activity goes wrong). At another, Ben Platt pisses on iconic “No Fear, No Die” star Isaach de Bankolé out of spite, which is not a sentence I ever expected to write.
These are the kind of scenes that make you hope the movie’s cast is having more fun than their characters, and that...
