And while not every show fulfilled that promise, the sheer quantity on display couldn't help but deliver real brilliance. Science fiction, in particular, hit a big winning streak.

The genre benefited both from ever-improving special effects and the kind of high-minded storytelling that put them to good use. Combined with new channels looking for the next big thing, it turned already strong material into something groundbreaking. The unprecedented opportunities were enough to deliver more than a decade's worth of top-notch choices.

Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the film could find a dedicated fanbase on Disney+ due to its immersive production design and resemblance to the ride. The movie successfully brings iconic Haunted Mansion ghosts to life on screen, while also incorporating recognizable quotes and adapting memorable scenes like the ghost ball and the crow jump scare.

Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” and Universal’s “Oppenheimer” are continuing to put up spectacular numbers in their second weekend and squash the competition, including Disney newcomer “Haunted Mansion,” as they combine for $140 million in their second weekend.

After opening to $162 million last weekend, “Barbie” is still drawing in hordes of pink-clad fans with an estimated $95 million second weekend, dropping just 41% from its opening weekend.

With an incredible estimated $353 million total after two weekends, “Barbie” is matching the domestic pace of the year’s top grossing film, Universal/Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” and is laying down a challenge to pass the Nintendo film’s $574 million domestic and $1.34 billion overall total.

If “Barbie” does pass “Mario,” it will not only become the year’s highest grossing film but will also become Warner Bros.’ highest grossing film of all time before inflation adjustment, passing “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II.

“Barbenheimer” fever shows no signs of slowing down. The combined forces of Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” and Universal’s “Oppenheimer” are setting up another huge weekend at the box office, but Disney’s new release “The Haunted Mansion” will have to settle for third place.

Atari’s Haunted House was an historic game of many firsts, and it’s receiving a serious facelift. Originally released in 1982, it served as the low-rez predecessor of the survival horror genre, featuring a large (at least for the time) navigable mansion map, and a vulnerable pair of spooky eyes as the avatar, and the looming threat of ghosts, bats, spiders, and even just the darkness of an unlit room.

Since then, there have been a few returns to the Haunted House well, such as an Xbox Live remake back in 2010. Now, in 2023, Brazilian indie outfit Orbit Studio is taking on the newest incarnation of Atari’s classic, hoping to deliver a fresh new take on the modern action roguelite.

This month’s San Diego Comic-Con is shaping up to be more low-key, at least in terms of reveals from Hollywood studios. Only a handful of major film and TV players will be shelling out to bring talent to the convention, with Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Peacock’s John Wick prequel The Continental among the film and TV highlights.

The decision for players such as Marvel and Warner Bros. to skip comes as the writers strike rages on, financial struggles tighten belts across Hollywood and the specter of an actors strike looms.

Notably, this will be the first time since 2011 that neither Marvel Studios nor DC’s film division will host a Hall H panel. Thirteen years have passed since the release of director John Carpenter’s (poorly received) last feature film, The Ward. Since making that film, the only things he has directed are a few of his own music videos. But now he has finally directed something more substantial – and he didn’t even have to leave his house to do it! During a panel at the Texas Frightmare Weekend convention, Carpenter revealed that he recently directed a TV series called John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams!

Carpenter revealed to the panel audience, “I just finished directing, remotely, a TV series called Suburban Screams – John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams. It was filmed in Prague, and I sat on my couch and directed it. It was awesome.“

Hardly anyone expected John Carpenter to get back in the director’s chair and just as many have accused him of being overambitious in recent years. Hey, "Grey's Anatomy" fans. We hope you guys totally dug everything that tonight's episode 3 had to offer you guys. The scripted and unscripted series based on “The Battersea Poltergeist” from Blumhouse Television and Maniac Productions have been set up at Peacock for development, Variety has learned exclusively.

Both projects are based on the BBC Radio 4 docu-drama podcast “The Battersea Poltergeist.” It was first announced as being in the works in May 2021, though no network or streaming service was attached at that time.

The shows are meant to be the first installment of a new anthology series called “Blumhouse’s Ghost Story.” “The Battersea Poltergeist” tells the story of strange events that occurred in 1956 in Battersea, South London, when 15-year old Shirley Hitchings first began being terrorized by a powerful force. The events were investigated over a 12-year period, becoming the longest documented poltergeist haunting in history. The unscripted companion series will delve deeper into the story through the use of archival footage and new interviews.

Season three of Netflix's supernatural, quasi-documentary horror series Haunted debuted on May 14, 2021. Created by Jan Pavlacky, the new slate of six terrifying tales, which may or may not be true, features everything from frightening forests, creepy haunted houses, and accursed music boxes to wicked witchery, demonic animals, genetic psychosis, and the like.

Although the oral ghost-story anthology continues to be one of Netflix's most popular titles, the streaming service has yet to announce whether or not the show will be renewed for season four. Until a decision is made one way or the other, here are the most unsettling stories on Haunted so far.

In a competitive situation, Blumhouse Television and Maniac Productions have secured the rights to the BBC Radio 4 podcast “The Battersea Poltergeist.”

The two companies will now work to develop a scripted series titled “Blumhouse’s Ghost Story,” with the podcast serving as the basis for the first season. In addition, they will develop an unscripted companion series. Blumhouse TV and Maniac have also secured the life rights of Shirley Hitchings, who was the subject of the longest documented poltergeist haunting in history. They will also have the rights to Hitchings’ and James Clark’s book “The Poltergeist Prince of London: The Remarkable True Story of the Battersea Poltergeist.”

The official trailer and poster were released today.    Arriving at an isolated house for her first nightshift, young carer Emily is left alone to face a terrifying vengeful spirit in this disturbingly clever, psychological horror.   Have a look at the trailer below. Exclusive: Ben Silverman and Howard T. Owens’ rapidly growing content creation and distribution studio Propagate is teaming with Germany’s Constantin Entertainment in a first-look development and production deal. The plan is to work across all formats and genres.

Constantin Entertainment is one of the largest indie TV producers in Europe and is a subsidiary of Constantin Film. Based in Munich, the company runs production facilities in many European countries. Apart from in-house developments, credits include The Voice, Kitchen Nightmares and MasterChef. In 2019, its Chris Tall Presents became the first German Amazon original entertainment show.

Propagate’s expanding portfolio includes November 13: Attack on Paris and Haunted for Netflix; Lore for Amazon; Charmed for The CW; In Search Of for History; and Planet of the Apps for Apple.

Netflix very recently released the second season of it' show Haunted, a series where real people tell their real stories involving ghosts, demons, and supernatural hauntings, accompanied by dramatic reenactments of said stories that will absolutely scare the pants off of even the most hardened horror fans. Each episode tells a new and unique story, and the stories that these people tell seem so sincerely felt and experienced that it's hard not to believe what they're saying.

And although every episode is terrifying in it's own way, since every episode tells a new story there are obviously some episodes that are more frightening than others. Propagate Content will distribute Fox Entertainment’s unscripted programming and formats worldwide, excluding the U.S. and Canada, the companies announced at Mipcom Wednesday.

The agreement covers program sales rights for Fox’s hit series “The Masked Singer,” which recently returned for its second season. It also includes program sales and format rights for Fox’s unscripted summer series, “First Responders Live,” as well as the upcoming competition series “Ultimate Tag” hosted by NFL siblings JJ, Tj and Derek Watt.
