The 2010s was a golden age of television, as cable, internet, and burgeoning streaming services created an explosion of platforms needing content. And while not every show fulfilled that promise, the sheer quantity on display couldn't help but deliver real brilliance. Science fiction, in particular, hit a big winning streak.
The genre benefited both from ever-improving special effects and the kind of high-minded storytelling that put them to good use. Combined with new channels looking for the next big thing, it turned already strong material into something groundbreaking. The unprecedented opportunities were enough to deliver more than a decade's worth of top-notch choices.

Disney's 2023 Haunted Mansion film stays faithful to the Disneyland ride, replicating key elements such as the chair scene and notable ride rooms. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the film could find a dedicated fanbase on Disney+ due to its immersive production design and resemblance to the ride. The movie successfully brings iconic Haunted Mansion ghosts to life on screen, while also incorporating recognizable quotes and adapting memorable scenes like the ghost ball and the crow jump scare.
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Haunted Mansion!Haunted Mansion has just been released, and it's way more faithful to the Disneyland ride than the first film. Disney has attempted to adapt the popular ride twice now, with the first one being the 2003 movie of the same name starring Eddie Murphy. Murphy's version wasn't a hit with critics and never really found a huge fanbase following its underperformance at the box office.

Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” and Universal’s “Oppenheimer” are continuing to put up spectacular numbers in their second weekend and squash the competition, including Disney newcomer “Haunted Mansion,” as they combine for $140 million in their second weekend.
After opening to $162 million last weekend, “Barbie” is still drawing in hordes of pink-clad fans with an estimated $95 million second weekend, dropping just 41% from its opening weekend.
With an incredible estimated $353 million total after two weekends, “Barbie” is matching the domestic pace of the year’s top grossing film, Universal/Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” and is laying down a challenge to pass the Nintendo film’s $574 million domestic and $1.34 billion overall total.
If “Barbie” does pass “Mario,” it will not only become the year’s highest grossing film but will also become Warner Bros.’ highest grossing film of all time before inflation adjustment, passing “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II.

The Hatbox Ghost, Alistair Crump, plays a central role in the Haunted Mansion story, capturing souls to increase his power and bring chaos to the living world. Alistair's plan is to obtain 1000 souls by the full moon, tormenting both his mortal victims and the restless ghosts within the Haunted Mansion. In the end, Alistair is defeated through a clever plan involving a banishment spell and the rallying of the ghosts against him, resulting in harmony between the remaining ghosts and humans in the Haunted Mansion.
The Hatbox Ghost plays a huge part in Justin Simien's Haunted Mansion, and his real identity as well as his long history with the Disney theme park ride are central to the story. Turning Disney theme park attractions is a relatively new-ish concept, but the movies based on Disney attractions vary wildly in quality.
The story goes that Dick Cook, who at the time was running the Disney film studio with Nina Jacobson, had originally come up with the idea to “mine the theme parks for movie ideas” (as James B. Stewart put it in “Disney War”). They had made “The Country Bears” and were working on projects based on classic Disney attractions Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion. At the time, Pirates was envisioned as a direct-to-video cheapie, more along the lines of “Tower of Terror,” which debuted as an inexpensive TV on “The Wonderful World of Disney.”

“Barbenheimer” fever shows no signs of slowing down. The combined forces of Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” and Universal’s “Oppenheimer” are setting up another huge weekend at the box office, but Disney’s new release “The Haunted Mansion” will have to settle for third place.
The kid-friendly horror film made $3.1 million in Thursday previews at the box office. “Barbie,” meanwhile, made $21.2 million on Thursday alone, bringing its domestic total after its first week to $258 million; “Oppenheimer” made $10 million on Thursday and has a $127 million first-week total.
Directed by Justin Simien, who made “Dear White People” and the horror comedy “Bad Hair,” “The Haunted Mansion” is the latest movie inspired by a Disneyland theme park ride (which range from successes like the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise and “Jungle Cruise” to the more forgettable “Tomorrowland” with George Clooney).

This past weekend’s hugely popular “Barbenheimer” double feature ended up being a huge boon for the box office, but can any new movies make any sort of dent against two unstoppable blockbusters? Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The first attempt has Disney releasing its third “Haunted Mansion” movie into over 3,700 theaters on Friday, almost 20 years after the Eddie Murphy movie based on the popular Disneyland and Magic Kingdom attraction. This one is directed by Justin Simien and stars Oscar nominee Lakeith Stanfield (“Judas and the Black Messiah”), Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson, Tiffany Haddish and Danny De Vito, as well as Oscar winners Jamie Lee Curtis and Jared Leto as very specific ghosts. Stanfield plays Ben Matthias, an astrophysicist working as a ghost tour guide in New Orleans, called upon by a single mother (Dawson) who has moved into a mansion that is … you guessed it … haunted!

Atari’s Haunted House was an historic game of many firsts, and it’s receiving a serious facelift. Originally released in 1982, it served as the low-rez predecessor of the survival horror genre, featuring a large (at least for the time) navigable mansion map, and a vulnerable pair of spooky eyes as the avatar, and the looming threat of ghosts, bats, spiders, and even just the darkness of an unlit room.
Since then, there have been a few returns to the Haunted House well, such as an Xbox Live remake back in 2010. Now, in 2023, Brazilian indie outfit Orbit Studio is taking on the newest incarnation of Atari’s classic, hoping to deliver a fresh new take on the modern action roguelite.

This month’s San Diego Comic-Con is shaping up to be more low-key, at least in terms of reveals from Hollywood studios. Only a handful of major film and TV players will be shelling out to bring talent to the convention, with Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Peacock’s John Wick prequel The Continental among the film and TV highlights.
The decision for players such as Marvel and Warner Bros. to skip comes as the writers strike rages on, financial struggles tighten belts across Hollywood and the specter of an actors strike looms.
Notably, this will be the first time since 2011 that neither Marvel Studios nor DC’s film division will host a Hall H panel. Marvel has long said it would not come unless it could truly deliver new material (it laid out expansive plans last year and has put several films on hold amid the writers...

Thirteen years have passed since the release of director John Carpenter’s (poorly received) last feature film, The Ward. Since making that film, the only things he has directed are a few of his own music videos. But now he has finally directed something more substantial – and he didn’t even have to leave his house to do it! During a panel at the Texas Frightmare Weekend convention, Carpenter revealed that he recently directed a TV series called John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams!
Carpenter revealed to the panel audience, “I just finished directing, remotely, a TV series called Suburban Screams – John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams. It was filmed in Prague, and I sat on my couch and directed it. It was awesome.“
Whoever came up with the idea of having Carpenter direct something without having to get off his couch is a genius.

Hardly anyone expected John Carpenter to get back in the director’s chair and just as many have accused him of being overambitious in recent years. Which makes, maybe, a perfectly consistent moment in time that he’d return without leaving his couch: a panel at Texas Frightmare Weekend (all right) revealed John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams was shot in Prague while, to quote the man, “I sat on my couch and directed it. It was awesome.”
Prague Reporter did a bit of digging to find Suburban Screams had been “officially registered with the Czech Film Fund when submissions re-opened this March” by Milk and Honey Pictures, which oversees Prague production on Apple TV’s Foundation and Netflix’s Haunted; meanwhile, Creepy Catalog found a Staff Me Up listing noting involvement of industry veteran Mark Fenlason. That’s about as deep as the rabbit hole goes for now, but it...

[Warning: The below contains major spoilers for the Grey’s Anatomy Season 19, Episode 4, “Haunted.”] The October 27 episode of Grey’s Anatomy is titled “Haunted,” but the only thing scary about Season 19, Episode 4 is how little happens. Like Necco Wafers in trick-or-treater’s haul, this episode just seems like filler to us. That said, Bailey’s (Chandra Wilson) Princess Leia costume was reason enough for a Halloween-themed episode. The “haunted” person in this episode is Griffith (Alexis Floyd). At the start of the episode, the other interns are watching and re-watching a viral video of a doctor throwing a tantrum and destroying a hospital room. That doctor, as it turns out, was Griffith. And after she scrubs in with Maggie (Kelly McCreary) on a surgery, Griffith explains it all… Maggie asks Griffith in the scrub room why she was kicked out of her last intern program. Griffith says she was ousted for being too “aggressive,” when really, she was just calling ...

Cue the John Carpenter music! In Thursday’s Halloween edition of what’s shaping up to be a scary-good season of Grey’s Anatomy, the interns were cast in a sorta “slasher flick” — in other words, challenged to slice and dice real corpses. Did any of them, ahem, make the cut? And did “Haunted” deliver as big a surprise with this week’s ending as it did last week? (Don’t recall what happened? Our recap will fill you in.) With Halloween on the horizon, movie theatres are full of horror movies, from Halloween Ends to Smile, but some spooky season fans prefer something a little more grounded, and looking for the perfect TV series to chill them to the bone. Paranormal shows have always been a good source of scares, and the best have even left viewers with a week's worth of nightmares.
Whether they were long-running ghost hunting shows like Ghost Adventures or recollections of true accounts like Haunted, the realm of the paranormal can be scarier than any horror flick. While TV is inundated with countless paranormal programs, only the spookiest of spooky is worth watching for a truly frightening experience.

Whether you enjoy watching paranormal television shows like Ghost Adventures or you’re an experienced paranormal investigator, learning about the history behind some of the most haunted locations in America is not just educational, it can be fun. For this month’s Dead Time, I talked with an expert on haunted history, who not only tells the stories behind historical locations with a history of otherworldly activity, but he also strives to preserve those histories.
With over a decade of experience as a paranormal investigator, Conner Gossel created the popular Instagram account Haunted Historian and also hosts The Haunted Historian podcast. The scripted and unscripted series based on “The Battersea Poltergeist” from Blumhouse Television and Maniac Productions have been set up at Peacock for development, Variety has learned exclusively.
Both projects are based on the BBC Radio 4 docu-drama podcast “The Battersea Poltergeist.” It was first announced as being in the works in May 2021, though no network or streaming service was attached at that time.
The shows are meant to be the first installment of a new anthology series called “Blumhouse’s Ghost Story.” “The Battersea Poltergeist” tells the story of strange events that occurred in 1956 in Battersea, South London, when 15-year old Shirley Hitchings first began being terrorized by a powerful force. The events were investigated over a 12-year period, becoming the longest documented poltergeist haunting in history. The unscripted companion series will delve deeper into the story through the use of archival footage and new interviews.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched the first seven episodes of “Euphoria” Season 2.
Despite the immense popularity of HBO’s “Euphoria,” clearing a song for use in the show isn’t as easy as it may appear — especially when it comes to legacy artists and estates.
As music supervisor Jen Malone puts it, the teenage drama series has “sex, nudity, violence, drugs, guns. There’s not one thing that was missing as far as red flags for approval parties.”
And yet the first episode of Season 2 kicks off with Billy Swan’s cover of “Don’t Be Cruel,” made famous by Elvis Presley. The song plays as the grandmother of Fezco (Angus Cloud) struts into a strip club, walks in on a man receiving oral sex and shoots him in both legs. So how did Malone convince Presley’s estate to let the show use the song?...

“Adipurush,” starring Prabhas (the “Baahubali” films), is one of the most anticipated Indian films of 2022. It is directed by Om Raut, who directed Ajay Devgn-starring “Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior,” the biggest Indian box office hit of 2020 with $50 million.
“Adipurush” is Raut’s take on Indian mythological epic “Ramayana,” which has been adapted for film and television numerous times in India, including a series which ran for several years on state broadcaster Doordarshan. However, the idea for the film was born when Raut attended a screening of Japanese filmmaker Yugo Sako’s anime version of the epic, “The Prince of Light,” which he watched at the Mumbai Film Festival in the early 2000s.
“I was mesmerized. This is the way this story has to be told, very condensed… precise, yet you feel for the characters, you are rooting for Prabhu [Lord] Ram — and at the same time the presentation was so...

Listen, cursed film sets are nothing new. Movies have seemingly been plagued by misfortune since the very first time a director yelled, "Action!" Some of the most famous cursed films are "Poltergeist" where people in the cast died horrible deaths spanning anything from unfortunate medical misdiagnoses to gruesome murder; "The Crow" where the star of the film, Brandon Lee, was accidentally shot dead during a scene involving a prop gun; and "Rosemary's Baby," which experienced multiple freak deaths in addition to the brutal murder of director Roman Polanski's then-girlfriend, Sharon Tate.
Many of these films have dark elements to them, and can even be categorized as horror,...

Haunted is Netflix's latest offering when it comes to a horror anthology series. Each episode presents a paranormal story retold in a documentary format, although it's difficult to determine whether each of these stories is true or not. The nature of these cases might range from serial killer parents to demonic cats. Because of the duality of its genre, the show might impress fans of both true crime and classic horror documentaries.

Spoiler Alert: The post below has details for the first two episodes of FX and Hulu’s American Horror Stories.
For the first two episodes of American Horror Stories, there’s no place like home, sweet home.
FX on Hulu’s AHS spinoff anthology series mirrors the very first episodes of the long-running horror series as a new family makes their way to the infamous Los Angeles home in the first episode, “Rubber(wo)Man.” This time, it’s a couple of house-flippers, Michael (Matt Bomer) and Troy (Gavin Creel), and their disinterested teenage daughter Scarlett (Sierra McKormick).
Upon unpacking, Scarlett finds the leather rubber suit — yes, that one — and gives the devilish attire a try. The familiar trill of Bernard Hermann’s “Twisted Nerve” (famous for its use in Kill Bill) harkens to the scenes from the AHS‘s first sinister moments. While she checks herself out in the mirror,...

If you cross paths with Crystal Moselle, be warned, she might make a movie of your life. It’s what the New York-based filmmaker did when she met the shut-in family portrayed in her disturbing 2015 documentary and Sundance Grand Jury Prize Winner “The Wolfpack.” She repeated the feat with a girl skater crew she met on the subway, which turned into the delightful 2018 feature “Skate Kitchen.” The HBO series “Betty” is the spin-off of that film and shares the “Skate Kitchen” cast and well as its combination Instagram Story-meets-surf-style photography.
