Whether showcasing historically accurate sumo or exaggerated hulking Mma monsters, the best martial arts anime connect combat styles steeped in tradition with ground-breaking visuals. Series like Tomorrow's Joe's emotional boxing bouts and Dragon Ball's surprisingly grounded kung-fu inspiration laid the groundwork for modern hits like Baki and Wind Breaker, but there's no shortage of fighting brilliance in between.
The common thread among the best martial arts anime is a focus that goes beyond the fight, immersing viewers in the minds and motivations of the fighters. Of course, they are the beneficiaries of stellar animation, too—even the oldies innovating in their way. With their excellent execution and stories simmering below the surface-level conflicts, martial arts encounters become more than physical confrontation.

Shogakukan has officially launched its AI translated manga and light novel app, Novelous, in the United States and Canada on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. Est.
Shogakukan has partnered with AI translation startup Mantra, in which they invested 780 million yen (US$5.1 million) along with three other manga publishers in June last year.
According to the publisher, many light novels have low circulation numbers, making translation and overseas expansion difficult in terms of profitability.
However, by using AI, they aim to translate many works at a low cost, which they say will also serve as a countermeasure against piracy.
In an interview with Nikkei, Shogakukan had said that human translators will meticulously organize details such as the characteristics of characters, the background, and the context – before AI translation process begins.

Kengan Ashura author Yabako Sandrovich has confirmed the development of a new manga series.
The announcement was made during a video on Shogakukan’s Manga One app’s official YouTube channel, released on Dec 27, 2024.

They can also be seen demonstrating mixed martial arts (Mma) techniques, hinting that the upcoming series may continue Sandrovich’s tradition of incorporating combat sports themes.
As the two moved on to judge the manga entries, the camera operator asked Sandrovich about the new series, to which he confirmed its development.

A good manga series, like Netflix's Hajime no Ippo, continues to impact, influence, and entertain readers indefinitely long after its heyday has passed. After its debut, Hajime no Ippo was widely viewed as one of the best martial arts/combat sports manga of its time. Incredibly, even today, Hajime no Ippo remains a top choice for anyone interested in a well-crafted, technically sound, and emotionally resonant fight story.
The world first heard of George Morikawa's Hajime no Ippo in a 1989 issue of Weekly Shnen Jump. Since that debut some 35 years ago, Morikawa has continuously been adding and updating chapters and content to the story. As a result, Hajime no Ippo is one of the longest-running manga in the history of the medium. The story details the adventures of shy teenager Makunouchi Ippo, who, due to his lack of friends, is an easy target for school bullies who see...

Bloodsoaked faces, adrenaline rush inspiring sequences, and grisly wounds become a common sight with acclaimed fighting anime Kengan Ashura returning with the final part of its second season on Netflix just a year since the release of the first part. Previously, the second round of the most recent iteration of the Kengan Annihilation Tournament was completed with spectacular fights among the top brawlers of the world, and our protagonist, Tokita Ohma, made it through to the third round while recuperating from previous injuries. Hayami Katsumasa had attempted a coup to take over the Kengan Association, only for his plans to be thwarted by the present chairman of the association, Katahara Metsudo, and Nogi Hideki, who wishes to become the next chairman by having his fighters win the tournament. Crossovers between different fictional universes began in the first place for the simple fun derived from matching up characters against their equally formidable counterparts, which is why crossovers are more common in fighting-based narratives. Some of the most popular fighting games, like Tekken, Mortal Kombat, and Street Fighter, have often brought their iconic characters together for battle royales, much to the fans’ amusement, and this time Netflix has wisely adopted the same strategy. Following the announcement of major Japanese companies investing heavily in AI translation start-up to boost the export of manga, illustrator of Kengan Ashura, Daromeon, recounted an interesting tale on twitter.
Daromeon revealed that English debut of Kengan Ashura manga was almost rocky as the professional translators who were responsible for translating the manga had done a poor job.
Sticking with the official translations would have posed significant problems, as the illustrator believed nobody would read them.
The situation was solved then by entrusting the translation of Kengan Ashura manga to a fan translation group.
However, Daromeon also wondered if AI translations could have helped with this situation.
“The English translation of Kengan Ashura is a bit peculiar, and we ended up entrusting it to an amateur group that had been illegally translating and uploading the manga without permission. This was because their translation was overwhelmingly better than the official one.

As anime and manga fans will know, the Baki series is one of the best-known and most popular martial arts manga and anime series of all time, right next to Hajime no Ippo and Kengan Ashura (we’re not counting Dragon Ball since it has a fantasy element to it). Anime is such an endlessly versatile storytelling medium because of its ability to tackle any subject matter imaginable, from magical girls, to competitive sports, to high-stakes combat. There's an anime series out there for everyone, but action series — particularly those that adhere to the shonen and seinen demographics — make up some of the medium's most popular series. Ninja Kamui is one of 2024's most exciting new series, and it's quickly made a name for itself as an Adult Swim original production. Ninja Kamui tells a brutal story of revenge where retired ninja assassin, Joe Higan, faces an unimaginable tragedy that sets him on a path of vengeance that pits him against his former employer. Ninja Kamui tells a gripping story that has shades of both John Wick and A History of Violence.

Fighting is one of the purest life instincts, one that has been embedded deep inside creatures as a means for survival. There are a myriad ways to approach fight-oriented storytelling, and by now, the manga scene has adopted almost every one of them. While there are more over-the-top, more popular ones like Dragon Ball, Baki, and Kenichi, which have gathered a mass fan following, the more grounded ones like Shamo and Meguru have left their mark in the minds of dedicated manga readers. Kengan Ashura, the manga series created by Yabako Sandrovich and Daromeon, falls in between these two categories, and what makes it unique is the way multiple characters are given equal importance in the cumulative growth of the narrative.
It almost seems after monopolizing Kaiju-oriented anime, Netflix has targeted fighting-based ones, as no sooner than Baki completed its second season, Kengan Ashura returned to the streaming platform after a four-year hiatus.

Netflix may be notorious for sabotaging anime's reputation with mediocre live-action movies and TV shows, but it also offers an ever-growing catalog of Japanese anime, the majority of which are a solid 8 out of 10 in rating. While it failed to recreate the live-action experience for popular anime series like Death Note, Attack on Titan, and Cowboy Bebop, it did succeed in producing some enthralling anime shows, including Castlevania, Yasuke, Levius, and the topic of the day, Kengan Ashura.
Kengan Ashura is a martial arts anime based on a Japanese manga written by Yabako Sandrovich and illustrated by Daromeon. The series, released in July 2019 as Ona (Original Net Animation), depicts a world where the strong thrive, and the weak perish, as most business deals are finalized through combat in a grand arena. Even though four years have passed since the anime's release, the anticipation for a second season is never out of the audiences' desire.
