Exclusive: Spanish screenwriter Javier Gullón has been tapped to adapt Final Boarding, a horror film for Sony’s Screem Gems, based on a short story by Clarence Hammond.

Plot details for the film are under wraps. Screen Gems President Ashley Brucks optioned the story from Hammond, a former colleague from her time at Paramount Players, who will produce.

This marks the second studio horror project that Gullón has lined up recently, following his pitch sale of the Sarah Pinsker novella Two Truths and a Lie to Walter Hamada’s 18hz and Paramount. Prior to that, Gullón’s hot thriller spec The Bet sold preemptively to Warner Bros with 42 producing.

Katelin Arizmendi ASC grew up in Oakland, Calif., but has lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., for the last 10 years. She attended the University of California-Santa Cruz for an experimental film study focused on film theory. Following that, she received a master’s degree in cinematography at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, where she fell in love with shooting 35mm and 16mm film. Her first feature was the 2018 Blumhouse psychological horror film Cam. Her second, the disturbing drama Swallow, was well received at the Tribeca Film Festival and later earned her an ASC Spotlight Award nomination as well as a nomination at the Camerimage Film Festival for Cinematographer’s Debut.

All episodes of the coming-of-age Satanic Panic thriller series Hysteria! will be available to watch on the Peacock streaming service as of Friday, October 18th – but if you would prefer to watch the show on regular television, USA Network and Syfy will be simulcasting the first episode on October 18th, with USA Network going on to air episodes each Friday. When law professor Tal (Grantham Coleman) enters his childhood home ahead of his father’s funeral, his young son Bentley (Dyllan Yelverton) turns to him with curiosity. “Is Grandpa going to be a ghost?” he asks. As it turns out, Tal will be right on the first count and wrong on the second. MGM+’s Emperor of Ocean Park is not the sort of story in which spirits return to wreak supernatural havoc. It is, however, entirely about the ways in which Tal and his siblings are haunted by the memory of their dad, conservative judge Oliver Garland (Forest Whitaker), in ways that lend themselves to both Grishamesque thrills and Succession-lite angst. But even Whitaker’s innate gravitas can only do so much to fight gravity. Eventually, the drama sags under the weight of its messy ambition.

Miguel Puga has been working on the Blue Beetle animated series since early 2024 and will act as the project’s showrunner and director, with Cristian Martinez writing the scripts.

Angel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, the top talent behind DC’s 2023 film, return for the Blue Beetle animated series as executive producers alongside John Richard. Galen Vaisman, who helped executive produce the movie, oversees the animated adaptation. Casting for the project remains a mystery, though Deadline says DC is in contact with multiple stars from the live-action film. Although deals still need to be implemented, their response was positive.

The Blue Beetle animated series continues the story started in Soto’s live-action film. If audiences connect with the animated series, DC could continue the story in a new live-action sequel.

The next video game to get a feature film adaptation will be Just Cause. From Square Enix and Avalanche Studios, the game has a movie in the works at Universal Pictures, and its director has just been found.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, ngel Manuel Soto will direct the Just Cause movie. David Leitch and Kelly McCormick will also reunite to produce the film under their 87North label as part of their first-look deal with Universal. Story Kitchen's Timothy I. Stevenson, Dmitri M. The upcoming Apple TV+ series “Government Cheese” has filled out its main cast with four new additions, Variety has learned exclusively.

Jahi Winston, Evan Alexander Ellison, Jeremy Bobb, and Louis Cancelmi have all joined the show. They will appear alongside previously announced series lead David Oyelowo as well as cast members Simone Missick, Bokeem Woodbine, Sunita Mani, and Adam Beach.

Based on the short film of the same name by Paul Hunter, “Government Cheese” follows Hampton Chambers (Oyelowo), described as “a man recently released from prison who struggles to keep his criminal past at bay and win back his family, all while processing moments of divine intervention that seem to happen with increasing frequency.”

Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto has talked about how he found himself at the helm of the DC Extended Universe's latest film entry.

Soto revealed in an interview with Collider how DC recruited his services, "There's something that I learned with DC, and that is that you don't pitch DC, DC pitches you. That was really another thing that I was not expecting because I've been pitching," he said. Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy franchise) and Jason Momoa (Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom) are teaming with Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto on The Wrecking Crew, the buddy action comedy that they’ve set up at MGM, Deadline can confirm.

Bautista and Momoa were both in talks for the film, scripted by Warrior creator Jonathan Tropper, long before the SAG-AFTRA strike. Tropper’s deal was negotiated and closed, and his script submitted, prior to the WGA strike began in early May.

Amid the ongoing Hollywood strikes, Warner Bros. and DC Studios launched “Blue Beetle” on Tuesday night in Los Angeles with a star-free “fan screening” in lieu of a splashy blue-carpet premiere.

This hasn’t been a great year so far for DC superhero movies. Shazam: Fury Of The Gods made less in its entire theatrical run ($134 million) than The Super Mario Bros.

Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto shared a wholesome behind-the-scenes video, showing the moment Xolo Maridueña learned that he got the leading part in the DC Universe movie.

As the first reactions to Blue Beetle arrived online, Soto took to Instagram to express his excitement for Maridueña’s official debut as the first Latino superhero to lead a DC movie. His post was accompanied by a sweet video, featuring the Cobra Kai breakout’s emotional reaction to landing the titular role. It also showed Soto relaying the good news to the Maridueña family through Facetime. Due to the ongoing actors' strike, the cast isn’t able to promote the upcoming movie during its premiere week. Because of this, 27 Latino organizations have banded together to invite its community to promote Blue Beetle in an "effort to amplify the work that countless Latino artists have worked so hard to create."

Director Ángel Manuel Soto recently sat down in an exclusive interview with Variety to discuss Latino representation in Hollywood and in his upcoming DC superhero movie, Blue Beetle. Like many other directors, Soto is traveling alone nationwide to promote his film due to SAG-AFTRA guidelines restricting members from participating.

This month's DC film stars Xolo Maridueña as the titular superhero alongside Bruna Marquezine, Harvey Guillén, Belissa Escobedo, Susan Sarandon, and George Lopez. Despite the hard work and constant travel, Soto feels determined to spread the word on his movie, which features a majority Latino cast.

Before the new DC Universe officially kicks off with Superman: Legacy, we still have two films that were developed under the old Dceu to go — Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and Blue Beetle. “We had so much great stuff aligned and I really wish that we could get it to you guys but we need to stand on the right side of history and because of that we’re planting our feet in the ground,” Maridueña said. “With that being said, this is a fantastic movie and you know, it needs to be seen on the bigger screen.”
