‘Gomorrah — The Origins’ Crime Series Sets January 2026 Launch Date, Reveals First-Look Images
Image
“Gomorrah,” the gritty Neapolitan mob series that is Italy’s biggest TV export, is set to return in January of 2026 — albeit in a 1970s-set incarnation — as “Gomorrah – The Series. The Origins.”

Comcast-owned pay-tv service Sky has announced a January release date on the first installment of the “Gomorrah” origins story that, as previously announced, will recount the rise of mobster Pietro Savastano. Savastano, who in “Gomorrah” is the head of the drug-dealing clan that bears his name, is played by 16-year-old Naples native Luca Lubrano in the prequel.

The prequel series is lead-directed by Marco D’Amore, who starred as ruthless central character Ciro Di Marzio in the “Gomorrah” original.

The hotly anticipated show’s lead-producer Riccardo Tozzi during a press presentation said Marco D’Amore drew inspiration for the “Gomorrah” origins show’s tone from Sergio Leone epic “Once Upon a Time in America” about two childhood friends from...

The Emmy-Winning Episode Of Gunsmoke That Guest-Starred A Pre-Happy Days Ron Howard
Image
If there are a select number of pillars upholding the Hollywood complex as we know it, Ron Howard is no doubt one of them. He's been an prominent actor, director and producer for over the past six decades and clearly shows no signs of stopping, with his latest film "Eden" set for release next month. Howard's presence as an industry fixture is so prolific each stage of his career is a story unto itself. Long before he became an Academy Award-winning filmmaker ("A Beautiful Mind") or one of the co-founders of Image Entertainment, Howard made a considerable name for himself in the world of television.

In the same vein as Jodie Foster, Howard was thrust into the industry at such a young age and built his legacy on its foundation. Although "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Happy Days" are considered the two landmarks of his television career, you would likely...

Image
Like the title of its feature-length continuation, The Immortal Man, Peaky Blinders could live on for a while. Franchise creator Steven Knight hints the upcoming film is a "fitting end to the first chapter" of the Peaky Blinders' story, suggesting there could be more from the popular period drama.

Speaking with The Playlist's Bingeworthy podcast (via Entertainment Weekly), Knight was asked about The Immortal Man and whether the movie was the finale for the Peaky Blinders franchise or a part of bigger plans. Knight teased that the latter could be the case, stating he'd continue Peaky Blinders if the right story emerges. "As long as there's an appetite for it, and I've got stories to tell, then why not?" he said. These comments follow Knight's recent statements that Peaky Blinders would likely continue, though he could not announce any plans for the beloved franchise.

Peaky Blinders Star Reflects On Big Character Change for Final Season
Image
Peaky Blinders star Finn Cole has looked back on a huge change for his character Michael Gray in the show's final season. The backbone of the final episodes revolved around a gang war between Michael and cousin Tommy Shelby.

Michael was initially portrayed in the historical crime drama as a loyal lieutenant for Tommy, though he slowly grew resentful of his cousin's rule. In Peaky Blinders' final season, Michael vowed to kill Tommy in revenge for landing him in prison on a drug charge. Cole recently told The Hollywood Reporterthat he doesn't think writer Steven Knight planned for the cousins to go to war, but had to change scripts following the 2021 death of cast member Helen McCrory, who played Michael's mother Polly Gray.

One Key Invincible Season 3 Line Teases The Endgame For Mark Grayson
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Invincible."

"We're in the endgame now," declared Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) during "Avengers: Infinity War," signaling the final act of the 21st century's most famous superhero saga. "Invincible" isn't quite there yet; it's about 45% of the way through the original 144-issue Image comic series by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley. However, the ongoing third season of "Invincible" has offered some hints of that endgame.

In the episode "You Were My Hero," Mark/Invincible travels far into the future and discovers his superhero comrade the Immortal (Ross Marquand) rules the planet as a king. The Immortal has gone mad from living too long; he doesn't quite realize that the Mark before him is from the past. Thus, he talks about events that Mark hasn't experienced yet; he mentions Mark getting sick, even though they found a cure for this disease, and claims Mark...

During the three-episode premiere of Invincible, Mark Grayson (Invincible) and Eve Wilkins (Atom Eve) finally started dating. What could have been a disaster after Mark confessed to speaking to a future version of Eve ends with them becoming a couple. And while no one is shocked by this, it should also be certain that they’ll never have a normal relationship. That part is confirmed on their first date.

While Mark and Eve are at a table, a mysterious portal opens. Future freedom fighters, Dropkick and Fightmaster (voiced by Cobra Kai and Blue Beetle's Xolo Maridueña) come through and ask for Mark’s help. As expected, Invincible assists them. What isn’t expected (if you’ve never read the comics) is having to fight The Immortal to save the future.

The Immortal Hulk is Marvel's Perfect Hulk
Image
Content Warning: the following article contains discussions of abuse

Through Bruce Banner's 62 years of comic appearances, no story has better captured the emotional dynamic of Banner and his gamma-powered alters than The Immortal Hulk, by Al Ewing and Joe Bennett. This astonishingly emotionally intelligent and visually captivating series follows Bruce at his absolute lowest as he is forced to confront his past traumas, and in the process, confidently asserts itself as Marvel's greatest depiction of the Hulk yet.

Before The Immortal Hulk, the hero had recently lost everything. His best friend, Rick Jones, was violently executed by Hydra forces in Secret Empire #1. Despite not having transformed in months, Banner was executed by Hawkeye on suspicion of a potential future Hulk attack in Civil War II #3. Bruce had been stripped of every positive relationship, leaving nothing but him and his dissociative alters behind.

Den Of Thieves 2: Pantera - Gerard Butler & O'Shea Jackson Jr. Plan A Diamond Heist In New Trailer
Image
After six years, the first official trailer for Den of Thieves 2: Pantera has arrived, giving us our first look at the upcoming heist thriller starring Gerard Butler and O'Shea Jackson Jr., although it looks like there will be a slight twist to their dynamic this time as, instead of trying to one up one another, they'll be teaming up to pull off the diamond heist of a lifetime.

However, the synopsis is not quite as revealing, telling us that "Big Nick (Butler) is back on the hunt in Europe and closing in on Donnie (Jackson), who is embroiled in the treacherous and unpredictable world of diamond thieves and the infamous Panther mafia, as they plot a massive heist of the world’s largest diamond exchange."

In addition to Gerard Butler (300; Olympus Has Fallen) and O'Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton; Godzilla: King of the Monsters) reprising their roles from the previous installment,...

Invincible: It Sounds Like The Wait For Season 3 Will Be Far Shorter Than The One For Season 2
Image
There was a significant gap between the first and second seasons of Prime Video's Invincible, with the show originally launching on March 25, 2021 and not returning until November 3, 2023.

Even then, the series was criticised for splitting season 2 in half, with the first batch of episodes ending in November and not returning until March 2024. Now, though, one of the show's lead stars has shared their belief that the wait for season 3 will be quite a bit shorter.

Talking at Galaxy Con, What If...? and Avengers: Endgame star Ross Marquand, who voices The Immortal, Aquarus, Rudy Connors, and various others, shared what he knows about Invincible's future.

"Invincible Season 3, we're almost wrapped on that," the actor teased (via Toonado.com). "I don't want to speak because Robert would be like, 'Don't tell people anything because we don't know.' But I have a feeling it's probably going to be early next year.

In 2023, Marvel Began Assembling A Twisted Version of the Avengers
Image
Marvel has introduced evil counterparts of its most recognizable characters, creating a potential villainous version of the Avengers. Characters like Toranos, General Strange, and Hydra-Cap are direct correlations to Thor, Doctor Strange, and Captain America. Feilong's takeover of Stark Industries and use of Iron Man tech represents the malformation of everything Iron Man stands for, and to this point he has done everything short of suiting up in his own armor.

The past year has been an ambitious period for Marvel, as they have relaunched a number of titles, rebooted the Ultimate Universe, and introduced a number of exciting new characters – including a slate of twisted Avengers analogues that the Marvel Universe should hope don't find reason to come together and form a team.

Across titles including Captain America, Iron Man, The Immortal Thor, and Uncanny Avengers, Marvel has introduced, or reintroduced characters who correspond to some of the company's highest-profile heroes,...

‘Gomorrah’ Star Marco D’Amore to Direct ‘Caracas’ Starring Toni Servillo, Vision Launches Sales at EFM (Exclusive)
Image
Actor-director Marco D’Amore, who played the ruthless central character Ciro Di Marzio on the Italian mob show “Gomorrah,” is directing “Caracas” a Naples-set drama in which he stars opposite Toni Servillo.

“Caracas” is a co-production between Picomedia, Mad Entertainment and Vision Distribution, which will release the film in Italy.

Vision Distribution’s international unit, headed by veteran sales agent Catia Rossi, is launching sales on the film at Berlin’s upcoming European Film Market.

In “Caracas,” which is based on writer Ermanno Rea’s novel “Napoli Ferroviaria,” Servillo plays Giordano Fonte, a Neapolitan author of international fame who returns to his hometown after many years. There he intersects with a former acquaintance nicknamed Caracas, a man originally from Venezuela who, having been a Neo-fascist skinhead, is now in the process of converting to Islam.

The film is a journey into the multi-ethnic, crime-ridden port city, where Caracas rules over the area near Naples’ central station.

Movistar Plus’ ‘El Inmortal’: A Mob Thriller Charting One Man’s Spectacular Rise Up the Narco Food Chain

World premiering in the main Canneseries competition, “El Inmortal – Gangs of Madrid” marks the latest original series from Movistar Plus, the Spanish pay TV/SVOD arm of Telefonica, made with Banijay’s Dlo Producciones and Telemundo Streaming Studios. Beta Film handles international distribution.

A Movistar Plus hallmark, “El Inmortal” reflects a real-life Spanish reality, the rise and fall – or here, fall and rise, then maybe fall and rebound – of the founding leader of Los Miami, a gang which controlled Madrid’s insatiable ‘90s drug business. José Antonio’s real-life counterpart survived four attempts on his life, becoming a legend and gaining his epic sobriquet.

But it also nails other facets of high-end scripted fiction.

Malaga Festival Spanish Screenings: 8 Takes, From Rampant Growth to a $1.8 Billion Hub Plan and Buzz Titles
Image
Launched in 1998, the Malaga Film Festival first grabbed attention as a Spanish movie showcase and birthplace of a Spanish star system, TV actors walking a red carpet to acclaim from milling throngs.

Under Juan Antonio Vigar, director from 2013, it has consolidated as a platform for a new generation of Spanish filmmakers while adding ever increasing industry heft – co-pro forums, WIPs, a Hack digital forum initiative – and also opening up to TV.

In 2021, however, Malaga Festival and Spanish Screenings have exploded in scale, impact and attendance. The narrative of this year’s event is largely one of that growth. Eight takes on this and other Malaga highlights:

Malaga Lifts Off

Little wonder Malaga forms part of what’s now the Spanish Screenings Xxl. In its first full edition since 2019 with festival and industry onsite and aligned, Malaga has truly taken off. It received almost 2,000 film and TV submissions, says Vigar. Attendance has skyrocketed to over 1,100 delegates,...

Spanish TV Fiction Producers’ Appetite for Co-Production Grows
Image
Traditionally, Spanish broadcasters retained all rights, paying producers a percentage of the budget of their series, which prevented them from building catalogs of their own rights. Although at first, the arrival of SVOD platforms didn’t change their business relationship, the increasing demand for TV fiction and financial needs have forced an increased use of the co-production model.

“There is a lot of creativity and versatility in co-productions from Spain,” says Caroline Servy, managing director at The Wit.

Dipping its toe into the co-production arena in 2016 with “The Young Pope,” The Mediapro Studio, one of Europe’s super-indies, is expanding across Asia, Latin America and the U.S. markets, teaming with key broadcasters and platforms.

“Co-production has been the perfect model to hike the international reach of our productions. This way of working has become common among production companies, platforms and networks in recent years, and is in fact the...

At Last, ‘Gomorrah’ Is the Prestige Drama That HBO Max Needs
Image
From launch, critics dogged HBO Max about its higher pricing, the lack of access via Roku — and most of all, the apparent dearth of must-see shows that would make the streamer essential instead of one more platform among so many. Last summer, the complaints were still fresh when HBO Max announced a slate of international acquisitions: There, next to “The Great Pottery Throw Down,” was “Gomorrah.” All four seasons, companion movie “The Immortal,” and a fifth season to come. An Italian mafia drama didn’t get much attention; it wasn’t the stuff of corporate strategy.

But “Gomorrah” is much more than a quirky streamer pickup. For its Italian producer, Cattleya, “Gomorrah” sparked a trend in gritty, real-world storytelling that reshaped Italian TV. Beta Film — a company founded to exploit Federico Fellini’s “La Strada” — licensed “Gomorrah” in nearly 200 countries, and it became one of the most successful properties in its history.

Telemundo’s Marcos Santana on the Challenges of Covid-19 Production & Shifting Tastes
Image
As president of NBCUniversal’s Telemundo Global Studios, Marcos Santana has spearheaded the U.S. Hispanic network’s headlong drive into a challenging era where global streaming platforms dominate and legacy networks are reassessing their place in the television universe.

A raging pandemic has also spiked production challenges. His previous positions as president o f production unit Telemundo International Studios and of distribution arm Telemundo International has given him a holistic perspective on the biz.

Telemundo International Studios, which Santana founded in 2016, took on the shifts in international viewing habits and demands by creating high-end short-form scripted formats and launching big-budgeted Spanish-language premium series, which invariably call for more special effects and locations.

Reigning above the latter now is “Queen of the South,” starring Kate del Castillo, which is in pre-production on its third season, which Netflix will again co-produce as it did the second season.

“This will be shooting...
