Not long after one of Frank Grillo’s more recent movies climbed to the top of streaming charts, he has another movie following the same model. Grillo stars alongside Michael Jai White (The Dark Knight) in Mr-9: Do or Die, the 2023 espionage thriller following an elite Bangladesh spy who teams up with a CIA operative to bring down an international crime syndicate. Mr-9: Do or Die began streaming on Starz not long ago, and the film has wasted no time becoming one of the more popular movies on the platform, sitting at #9 at the time of writing. Mr-9: Do or Die received an extremely limited theatrical release two years ago, grossing less than $500,000 globally, and the film earned a 61% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Grillo has been acting for more than 30 years now, but his first major role came from starring alongside Liam Neeson in The Grey, the 2011 survival thriller from Joe Carnahan.

Frank Grillo has spent years carving out a niche as one of Hollywood’s most reliable tough guys, and Mr-9: Do or Die is a Bangladeshi breakout that could well be one of his best. Now it is doing no harm to his reputation with a blistering run into the Starz streaming chart, with action fans jumping into the gunfire-ridden story of international intrigue and espionage.

Adapted from a popular novel series featuring the “Bangladeshi James Bond”, Mr-9: Do or Die follows a secret agent code-named Masud Rana (Abm Sumon). Grillo plays the illusive antagonist who is masterminding some deadly arms deals that government officials want to shut down. The plot sees Rana being enlisted to take down the bloodsoaked reign of Grillo’s Roman Rains and his ruthless businessman brother Ricci (Matt Passmore) in a race across the world.

Mr-9: Do or Die is based on the first of a long-running series of mostly ghost-written novels chronicling the adventures of Masud Rana, Bangladesh’s answer to James Bond. Somewhat surprisingly given there are 500 or so novels in the franchise, this is only the second attempt at bringing them to the screen, the first being Masud Rana in 1974. Fifty years later, will the world be more receptive to the Bangladeshi Bond?

The film certainly starts on a familiar note with Rana running unnoticed across wide open lawns in broad daylight without being noticed. Despite his best efforts and his leaving a trail of bodies behind him, his target gets away and the two agents he was supposed to rescued are killed.

Exclusive: US-Bangladeshi action movie Mr-9: Do or Die, starring Abm Sumon, Michael Jai White and Frank Grillo, has been picked up by Quiver Distribution for a North American VOD/digital release this month.

After getting a limited theatrical run in the U.S., Canada and Bangladesh last August, the film will next be released in Russia through Kinologistika on May 2 and in Pakistan through Cine Entertainment on May 17.

Premiere Entertainment has also tied up deals with 101 Films in the UK, Premiere TV in Benelux, Spenzos in Greece, Flins in Spain, Movie Box in Turkey, Media Squad in Hungary/Poland/Romania, Golden Stay in China, Eagle Films in the Middle East, Blue Label in South Korea, CDC in Central and South America, and Rialto in Australia/New Zealand.

A sequel titled Mr-9: Sky Dancer is now being readied for a fall shoot with Bangladeshi actor Abm Sumon and Niko Foster confirmed to return.

Premiere Entertainment Group (Peg) has added action adventure The Oath directed by and starring Darin Scott to its EFM sales slate, following the recent US release in more than 650 theatres via Freestyle Releasing.

Exclusive: Frank Grillo action film Mr-9: Do or Die has struck a North American distribution deal with Canadian outfit Swapna Scarecrow.

Swapna is due to release the film in 150 screens in U.S. and Canada on August 25, the same day it will be released in Bangladesh by Jaaz Multimedia. Above and below are first look images from the film.

Filmmaker Asif Akbar directed the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Nazim Ud Daula and Abdul Aziz. The film is based on the popular spy thriller novels by the late Bangladeshi writer Qazi Anwar Hussain. Hussain published 550 novels in the series, which was modeled after the James Bond series. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but we understand Sumon plays the lead character Masud Rana, a secret agent under the codename Mr-9 for the Bangladesh Counter Intelligence Agency.
