Andrew Ahn and James Schamus stepped into the spotlight to discuss their reimagining of Ang Lee’s Oscar-nominated 1993 classic The Wedding Banquet and their careers at a “The Makers” event held on Wednesday as part of BFI Flare, the London Lgbtqia+ Film Festival.
Director/co-writer Ahn was also asked about the backlash against queer rights in various parts of the world. “I wish it weren’t so fraught, and it makes me incredibly anxious. I can only hope that this film coming out … is is an opportunity for people to build community, watch this film together, gain some strength, and then be able to go out there and fight for what is portrayed on screen,” he said.
“It just shows you it’s never a guarantee. It’s always this pendulum swing.”

Many fans are unhappy with The Fantastic Four: First Steps featuring a female Silver Surfer. However, the movie is set in an alternate reality, with a completely different character, Shalla-Bal, serving as Galactus' Herald instead of Norrin Rad (which was also the case in the Earth X comic book).
Doing the rounds to promote Wolf Man, Julia Garner spoke with Who What Wear and explained why she decided to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
"Going into the Marvel space was a big interest," she tells the site. "I feel like what a lot of actors don't value enough is trying to reach every kind of audience. I think that's really important. I'd be crazy to expect that everybody is going to watch Inventing Anna or Ozark or The Assistant. But to reach all kinds of people and build fans from everywhere? I was really excited to step into that universe.

Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” was a poster child for the power of inclusion when it broke box office records in 2023, but the $1.45 billion-grossing movie is only the 119th most inclusive film made in the past five years, according to the Inclusion List.
The annual list — presented by Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, in collaboration with the Adobe Foundation — is a data-driven ranking that identified the 150 most inclusive films from 2019 to 2023 and ranks a single year’s films across gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+, disability and age representation.
“Our goal with the Inclusion List is to celebrate those who are showcasing and working with exceptional talent from all backgrounds,” stated Dr. Smith in a press release announcing the researchers’ findings. “In the second year of its release, the newest iteration of the Inclusion List spotlights films, filmmakers, and distributors who clearly demonstrate that inclusion...

Babygirl joins a set of films that depict activities sufficiently reckless that even discussing them at work potentially invites a conversation with Human Resources. Unlike The Piano Teacher or Secretary or Videodrome there is at least a sense of awareness of consequences. It is perhaps discomfiting in light of stories like The Assistant or Sorry/Not Sorry that these seem more likely to be borne by women even here, but discomfiture is the order of the day.

But with each passing moment, it becomes clear that her abusive husband isn’t content with the arrangements for reasons only known to him. Unable to deal with this situation, she seeks shelter in her bathroom where she smokes away her sorrows. The only person in the palatial house is the Kenyan housekeeper, Becky, who shares her bottle of vodka with her so that they can numb themselves to the pain they’ve to endure. I sat down for a virtual chat with director Zayn Alexandre about Saint Rose, what compelled him to tell this story, and why patriarchal norms are on the rise again.

Hollywood has faced increasing scrutiny over the past decade over how the business works behind the scenes, even down to the treatment of the underlings serving Tinseltown's all-powerful executives. There have even been narrative films about the headline-making subject, such as She Said (2022) and The Assistant (2019), and the excellent current HBO series, The Franchise. But 30 years ago, Hollywood was also turning the lens on itself, with meta features like Swimming with Sharks. In the satirical comedy-drama, Kevin Spacey plays an esteemed but abusive producer who treats his latest assistant (Frank Whaley), as expected, like garbage.
Decades later, the topical film was adapted to the small screen for a series of the same name, starring Kiernan Shipka and Diane Kruger. MovieWeb recently spoke with George Huang, the original film's writer and director, amid the release of his latest feature Weekend in Taipei and learned more about how the original Swimming With Sharks...

Exclusive: Vertical has acquired North American rights to the neo-noir The Long Game, based on the acclaimed short story by New York Times bestselling author Janet Fitch (White Oleander), slating it for release in theaters and on demand in 2025.
Marking the directorial debut of Jace Anderson, who wrote the script with husband Adam Gierasch, The Long Game sees Oscar nom Kathleen Turner return to the genre in which she burst upon the scene with Body Heat, alongside Oscar nominee Jackie Earle Haley (Little Children), and newcomer Sekai Abenì.
Abenì plays Holly Sloan, who needs a break. When she meets and falls for grifter Richard Metzger (Haley), it’s not quite love at first sight, but perhaps an opportunity to help her career. And all Holly has to do is pull a little con on ’80s starlet Mariah McKay (Turner), a rich recluse who has faded into a Norma Desmond-like obscurity.

In its first few years, it was involved with the likes of Eye In The Sky, Captain Fantastic, The Lost City Of Z and Beasts Of No Nation. If you’re going to remake a classic Stephen King adaptation, you’d better do it right. Nobody’s ever topped Brian De Palma’s original “Carrie,” no matter how hard they tried. “It: Chapter One” knocked it out of the park, but “It: Chapter Two” brought it back into the park and poured manure on it, so they more-or-less cancel each other out. The TV mini-series remake of “The Shining” isn’t as bad as everyone remembers, but let’s not go nuts. It’s pretty grim when the 2019 version of “Pet Sematary” is your gold standard, since quality-wise even that’s just a lateral move.
Gary Dauberman’s remake of “Salem’s Lot,” however, raises the bar. It may be the only Stephen King remake that gets it right. Tobe Hooper’s classic mini-series adaptation from 1979 is still scary, and it’s a heck of a lot more insidious than Dauberman’s,...

"There's something wrong with these people..." Paramount+ has revealed an official trailer for new horror thriller titled Apartment 7A, the official or sort of unofficial prequel to Rosemary's Baby. This detail is barely mentioned in the marketing, though it is adapted from the same book that the classic 1968 horror movie is based on as well. The highly anticipated prequel will debut at this year's Fantastic Fest. Set in 1965 New York City, the film tells the story prior to the legendary horror classic Rosemary's Baby, exploring what happened in the infamous Bramford building before Rosemary moved in. Julia Garner stars as Terry Gionoffrio, joined by Dianne Wiest, Jim Sturgess, and Kevin McNally, plus Marli Siu, Andrew Buchan, Rosy McEwen, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. As much as a horror prequel like this should be a bigger deal, sadly this one is getting a direct-to-streaming debut because it seems like direct-to-video quality. Not the...

Julia Garner’s new home is not quite what she expected in the first trailer for Paramount+’s Rosemary’s Baby prequel feature, Apartment 7A.
The psychological horror movie from director Natalie Erika James hits the streaming service and digital VOD on Sept. 27. The cast includes Dianne Wiest, Kevin McNally, Jim Sturgess, Marli Siu, Andrew Buchan, Rosy McEwen and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.
Apartment 7A focuses on Terry Gionoffrio (Garner), an aspiring dancer in New York City who suffers an injury and moves into a luxury apartment building called the Bramford with an affluent couple (Wiest and McNally). After a Broadway producer (Sturgess) offers her a path to fame, Terry has an evening she can’t quite remember and suspects that something evil inhabits her apartment and the building itself.
“There’s something wrong with these people,” Garner says ominously in the trailer that shows her character’s concerns mounting.

There are several similarities between the Catholic Church and the film industry. Among them is a tendency to let powerful people get away with unconscionable behavior. In that insidious overlap, director Joshua John Miller finds the heart of “The Exorcism,” an ambitious social commentary that commingles Hollywood’s penchant for wrongdoing with the abuses of the Vatican for a unique portrait of an actor unraveled.
On the one hand, it’s a mediocre genre movie with a title as mundane as it is misleading. On the other hand, even as a muddy character study making only the weakest attempts to scare, “The Exorcis-m” is still a bigger treat for fans of “The Exorcis-t” than its recent flop sequel, “The Exorcist: Believer.”

“Satan is his father and his name is Adrian!” shouts the coven leader Roman Castevet at the end of 1968’s. Rosemary’s Baby. “He shall overthrow the mighty and lay waste their temples. He shall redeem the despised and wreak vengeance in the name of the burned and the tortured.”
Even when making allowances for Roman’s (Sidney Blackmer) understandable delight at seeing his plan come to fruition, that’s a lot of expectation to put on a newborn, no matter who his father might be. Unfortunately, the sequels chronicling Adrian’s rise to power didn’t quite live up to those expectations. Neither the 1976 TV movie Look What’s Happened to Rosemary’s Baby, in which Patty Duke subs in for Mia Farrow, nor original author Ira Levin’s follow-up book Son of Rosemary (1997) manages to deliver what Roman promised.

Few horror movies in the last several decades have left quite as much a psychological scar as "Rosemary's Baby" from 1968, a widespread cultural obsession among genre fans that has now led to a prequel film called "Apartment 7A," which has long been in the works and finally has a release window.
We first heard about "Apartment 7A" back in 2022, which was meant to tell the story of the eponymous apartment before Rosemary Woodhouse ever moved in and experienced the story's awful events. First told in author Ira Levin's best-selling novel, the main setting of that old, eerie-looking building on Central Park West ranks high among the likes of the Overlook Hotel from "The Shining," the Nostromo in "Alien," and other famous horror locales. Now, we're finally getting an origin story -- of sorts -- with ties going all the way back to the controversial Roman Polanski-directed classic.

Ozark actor Julia Garner has reportedly signed a deal to play Silver Surfer in Matt Shakman’s take on Marvel’s Fantastic Four.
For a long time, there were lots of questions about which four actors would be lined up to fill the iconic blue onesies worn by the Fantastic Four, Marvel’s family of superheroes due to make their MCU debut next summer. Matt Shakman, the mind behind Marvel Studios’ WandaVision is directing the project, which might just relaunch the MCU as ‘must watch’ moviegoing following two or three years where over-saturation and questionable levels of quality control have seen the films and TV shows dip in popularity.
Back in February that casting would be confirmed and much like the studio’s choice of director, there was a feeling of real promise regarding the actors that had been selected to embody one of Marvel’s most iconic set of characters.

The film already has an ensemble cast in the form of Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon-Moss Bachrach. It will be the first depiction of the characters in the MCU and is rumored to be set in an alternate reality. The characters have had two iterations before.
Julia Garner has been cast as the Silver Surfer in the upcoming film, which seemingly has not gone down well with fans. Though it is speculated that she would be playing the role of Shalla-Bal, a female version of the supervillain in another reality, fans seem to be extremely upset with the gender-swapped role and criticized Marvel for the move.

Emmy and Golden Globe winner Julia Garner has set her next role, signing on to star in Leigh Whannell’s “Wolf Man.”
The movie reunites Garner — playing a mother whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator — with Christopher Abbott, with whom she starred in 2011’s “Martha, Marcy, May, Marlene,” her first professional acting role.
Since then, Garner has gone on to become a major player in both film and television, winning three Emmy awards for her standout performance as Ruth Langmore in “Ozark,” and garnering multiple nominations for her portrayal of real-life con artist Anna Delvey in Shonda Rhimes’ limited series “Inventing Anna.”
In film, Garner earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for her impressive lead turn in Kitty Green’s “The Assistant.” Last year, the pair teamed up again for another critically acclaimed feature, “The Royal Hotel,” which Garner also produced through her Alma Margo production banner.

Apple TV+ is returning to its Bridgerton-esque period drama The Buccaneers.
Based on the unfinished Edith Wharton novel, the high-end series launched last month. It stars Christina Hendricks, Mia Threapleton (I Am Ruth), Kristine Frøseth (The Assistant), Alisha Boe (When You Finish Saving The World), Josie Totah (Saved by the Bell), Aubri Ibrag (Dive Club) and Imogen Waterhouse (The Outpost).
The Buccaneers charts goings-on in the late 19th century as a group of fun-loving young American girls explode into the tightly corseted London season, kicking off an Anglo-American culture clash as the land of the stiff upper lip is infiltrated by a refreshing disregard for centuries of tradition. Sent to secure husbands and titles, their hearts are set on much more than that, and saying “I do” is just the beginning.
The show has been compared in scope and tone to Netflix smash Bridgerton, although speaking to Deadline several weeks ago,...
