Edinburgh Film Festival Hires ‘Trainspotting’ Producer Andrew Macdonald To Create And Chair New Governing Board
Image
Trainspotting producer Andrew Macdonald has been appointed as the new Chair of the Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff).

As part of the role, Macdonald will lead the formation of a new organization that will deliver Eiff from 2024. Macdonald will now recruit a board and executive team to lead the Festival’s development from September 2023.

Like many Scottish film professionals, Macdonald is an Eiff alum. He worked at the festival in 1992, during which he made a video diary about raising cash to produce his first feature film, Shallow Grave. The film was finally made in 1993 and had its world premiere at Eiff in 1994.

Written by John Hodge and directed by Danny Boyle, the film was a box office success and won the BAFTA for Best British Film. Macdonald went on to produce several films with Boyle, including Trainspotting, A Life Less Ordinary, The Beach, and T2 Trainspotting. Since 1997 he’s headed DNA Films,...

Paramount+ Soccer Doc ‘Destination Paris’ Get September Debut (Exclusive Video)
Lionel Messi
“Destination Paris,” an original soccer documentary that traces the 2021-2022 UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) Champions League season, is headed to Paramount+ for a Sept. 6 debut, TheWrap can exclusively reveal.

The sports doc follows award-winning journalist and CBS sports analyst Guillem Balagué as he goes behind-the-scenes leading up to and during the world’s most prestigious club soccer tournament. His monthslong travels offer intimate and exclusive insight into how Europe’s elite teams managed radical change within their clubs, as well as social, economic and political obstacles amid the war in Ukraine.

With cameras in tow, Balagué details the season’s biggest stories, from life without Lionel Messi at Barcelona to Real Madrid’s stunning rally to a record 14th title. The film also traces the responses within European soccer to Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine, including UEFA moving the Champions League Final to Paris from St. Petersburg.

Glasgow Review: Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In Offers a Personal Reflection on a Sports Icon
Sir Alex Ferguson is arguably the greatest football manager of all-time. His achievements as coach of Manchester United for 27 years are unprecedented in the history of English football, a sport and culture that’s famous for its frequent disregard of managers. Ferguson was a tactical genius, a master of working with and bringing the best out of talent, his skills as a coach leading players such as David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, and Cristiano Ronaldo to otherworldly levels of greatness. There has never been a manager as successful, trophy-wise, and what he did will never be forgotten by Manchester United fans or anyone that loves the sport of football. He is the rare figure that every fan, regardless of background or preferred club, respects and admires as a towering giant of the game.

But he is only human—one day his greatness and mind will no longer be with us. That...

Paramount+ “Doubling Down” On Soccer, NFL & More Sports In Clear Challenge To Peacock
Image
“Paramount+ will be the leader in live sports,” CBS Entertainment Group boss George Cheeks said today in a major streaming war throw down to the likes of Olympics and Premier League home Peacock.

Coming partway through a delayed, glitchy and often repetitive corporate presentation of the March 4 launching ViacomCBS platform, Cheeks promised a plethora of sports programming from the NFL, international soccer and more.

“Bottom line everything sports fans love on CBS …all of this will be available on Paramount+,” Cheeks declared after an intro from RuPaul. For most Stateside sports fans, the big ticket is the NFL, which is in pricey play as the TV renewal rights are on the table heading towards next month.

A reality the CBS exec acknowledged in what was perhaps a case of some public negotiating.
