Vampire movies have had a resurgence in recent years, spanning across all kinds of genres. What We Do in the Shadows proved vampire comedies were a viable option 10 years ago, and films like Renfield and Vampires vs The Bronx have followed suit. Vampires returned to comic book movies with last year's Deadpool & Wolverine, and we’ve even seen entire films set around one section of Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel, like The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Perhaps Nosferatu is the most memorable modern vampire movie, once again retelling Stoker’s original story, with a Germanic-gothic spin from Robert Eggers. Wherever vampire films can be found, Dracula isn’t far behind. But a forgotten 2018 movie put an original new spin on Dracula never before seen in any film, and if its 80% Rotten Tomatoes score is anything to go by, it's worth checking out.

:When it comes to teen coming-of-age movies, the premise of Hulu's "Miguel Wants to Fight" sounds pretty formulaic. Our hero Miguel wants to get into a fight before moving out of town and is helped by his group of loyal friends. Think "American Pie" but violence - rather than sex.

Director Oz Rodriguez's "Miguel Wants to Fight" is about trying to fit yourself into the mold society says you should be in. In this particular case, it's a physically aggressive male, which isn't true to who our protagonist is.

"This kid lives in a town where fighting is a big deal. Where boxing is a huge deal and his dad is a fighter," Rodriguez tells Popsugar, "Miguel would rather not. He just wants to watch movies and watch dudes beat up themselves."

Still, that's where Miguel finds himself, butting up against cultural norms that can be pretty limiting for Latino boys.

Shelter is the newest addition to the on-screen Harlan Coben Universe. A Young Adult-skewing eight-part thriller, it’s the story of high schooler Mickey Bolitar, who’s recently moved from overseas to his dad’s hometown of Kasselton, New Jersey, where he and his new friends investigate the disappearance of a fellow student. As a storytelling device, vampires can stand in for all sorts of real-world phenomena. These classic creatures of the night are usually played for pure horror or unexpected romance, but are most effective when used to explore the issues faced by teenagers. A underrated horror movie has been dominating Netflix all week. For the past several days, subscribers have been loving Dracula Untold, the 2014 supernatural, action-infused horror flick starring Beauty and the Beast actor Luke Evans as the titular legendary vampire. Ever since the 1st, the film has been occupying a spot on the Top 10 most-watched list and today, it sits at #3.

The movie tells the secret origins of Dracula, exploring his beginnings as great military hero Vlad Tepes in medieval Europe, who turns to the dark side – Anakin Skywalker-like – in order to gain the power to destroy his enemies and save those he cares about. As directed by Gary Shore, Untold takes little from Bram Stoker’s original novel, though it does share some concepts with Francis Ford Coppola’s version, and offers a big old reboot of the mythical monster.

Yes, this was one of Universal’s many attempts to relaunch their shared horror universe.

The horror genre is never going to go out of fashion, because audiences will never tire of the visceral reaction that comes from being scared out of their seats. There’s a reason why it’s the most profitable form of filmmaking in Hollywood, after all, with companies like Blumhouse churning out countless low risk and high reward titles that are almost always guaranteed to make money, regardless of how good or bad the reviews are.

Netflix may have set their sights on becoming a titan of the film industry on the same scale as the traditional major studios, but so far, the company haven’t focused as heavily on original horror movies as they have on other genres, which seems strange given the relatively low levels of investment required and the hefty viewing figures they would bring in.

As the market leaders in the streaming wars, Netflix are expected to deliver the best original content in an effort to maintain their unassailable lead ahead of the competition. And for the most part, they’ve succeeded. This summer in particular proved to be an unqualified win for them, with countless movies earning rave reviews and scoring massive viewership numbers.

The likes of The Old Guard, Project Power, Extraction, Da 5 Bloods, Spenser Confidential, The Devil All the Time, Enola Holmes, The Kissing Booth 2 and Hubie Halloween offered something for everyone, catering to virtually all audiences and demographics from R-rated action to family friendly capers via PG-13 comedies and fluffy romances.

However, one genre that Netflix haven’t yet managed to conquer is horror. The Haunting anthology may be one of the platform’s marquee TV shows, but the original feature film library is somewhat lacking when it comes to genuine scares.

Colin Kaepernick is going back to high school. Just a few months after it was announced that Ava DuVernay and Kaepernick were teaming up on a Netflix docuseries about his high-school years and the foundation that made him who he is today, the streaming platform announced Jaden Michael has been cast to play a young Kaepernick. Colin in Black & White will star the 17-year-old actor, who most recently starred in Lorne Michaels's Vampires vs. the Bronx on Netflix earlier this month. Michael has also starred in The Get Down on Netflix and Custody with Hayden Panettiere and Viola Davis.

Kaepernick shared the exciting news on Twitter, writing, "I never thought I would be casting a young me in a show about my life. I can't wait for the world to see @ItsJadenMichael be an all-star on @netflix #ColinInBlackAndWhite @ava.

News of Michael’s casting comes around four months after Kaepernick was announced as teaming with Ava DuVernay on the six-episode series. The show aims to provide a look at Kaepernick’s early life as a Black child growing up with a white adopted family and his journey to become a great quarterback while defining his identity. It will also explore what led him to become a civil rights advocate.

We’re getting ever closer to All Hallow’s Eve, and Netflix is keeping up the spooky season by delivering more Halloween highlights as the weeks go by. So far this month, we’ve already been treated to the likes of Adam Sandler’s Hubie Halloween, comedy-horror Vampires vs. the Bronx and smash hit sequel series The Haunting of Bly Manor. And this week brings even more creepy content to keep us chilled.

With “Mulan” arriving on more platforms October 6 and non-premium VOD titles like “The Witches” and Amazon’s “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” later this month, the home-viewing market was on pause with no new premium titles this weekend. That didn’t stop Jessica Chastain’s “Ava,” however: It had the best showing for a non-premium title in the six months we’ve covered weekly VOD performance.

The $6.99 female-assassin action film, which debuted September 25, placed #1 at the three transactional sites and second at FandangoNow, which lists by revenue. Other recent titles like “The Outpost,” “The Tax Collector,” and “The Silencing” have thrived for multiple weeks, but none topped the charts for two weeks.

Beating out “Ava” at FandangoNow, thanks to its $19.99 price point, is “Antebellum.” In its third week, it’s also #2 at Spectrum. It fell off Apple TV and Google Play, even with less competition among premium titles.

Kicking off October in true spooky style, Netflix has just unleashed a brand new horror pic for audiences to enjoy. And it’s been doing really well on the streaming platform, currently sitting in sixth place on the Top 10 most-watched list in the US.

Released just a few days ago, Vampires vs. the Bronx is a Netflix original that centres on a group of friends who are forced to band together to save their neighbourhood from a bunch of – you guessed it! – bloodsucking vampires. From the sounds of things, the new lycanthropic-centric flick is more of a horror-comedy than a straight up scare-you-out-of-your-pants kind of deal, much akin to 2011’s Attack The Block or 2013’s The World’s End. So, expect one or two funny gags mixed in with the spine-chilling scares.

We’re officially into spooky season, as everyone attempts to divert their attention away from the constant horror show that is 2020 and focus on celebrating Halloween, and there’s no shortage of content on the way to a streaming service near you to make up for the fact that the genre is offering very little on the big screen after several hotly-anticipated titles packed up and fled to 2021.

We are, it seems, no closer to normalcy in terms of being able to go to our local movie theater carefree. But the spooky season is upon us and that means plenty of horror movies in honor of Halloween coming our way. But that's not all as this week brings plenty of options for those looking for something to stream this weekend.

A few horror flicks are coming our way this weekend, including the latest from Darren Lynn Bousman and a vampire movie on Netflix. We also have a new Ryan Murphy-produced adaptation of a Broadway classic, a new sci-flick starring Kodi Smit-McPhee and a biopic about Gloria Steinem. Here are this week's streaming selections.

As the coronavirus-forced lockdown continues, movie studios have realized releasing new titles directly for consumers to stream and rent at home may continue to be necessary. Upcoming releases on subscription platforms and VOD range from horror films for stay-at-home Halloween to family movies for the holiday season.

While a handful of high-profile films still plan to premiere in theaters, there is a wealth of content to choose from on home viewing platforms, including Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus or Apple Plus. Many more titles are available through virtual cinemas and on rental/purchase platforms such as iTunes.

October is particularly loaded with spooky new movies, including horror titles “Books of Blood” on Hulu, “Scare me” on Shudder and “A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting” on Netflix. Premiering Oct. 21, Netflix’s romantic drama “Rebecca” centers on a newlywed who is faced with the legacy of her husband’s late wife.

Yesterday marked the beginning of a new month, and that obviously brought with it plenty of fresh Netflix shows and films for subscribers to dig through.
