With true crime reports dominating the news on a daily basis, the genre has never seemed more demanding. And currently, one show that is captivating everyone’s attention is Adolescence on Netflix. This gripping crime drama doesn’t hold back; it pulls viewers in with a web of secrets, lies, and some jaw-dropping twists.

The series isn’t a direct dramatization of real events per se. Yet its creator, Stephen Graham, has drawn some inspiration from real-life true crimes, so the show itself feels really disturbingly real.

There's some exciting news about Wednesday season 2 to share with fans of the Netflix original series!

In a recent interview with Collider promoting her new movie, Death of a Unicorn, Jenna Ortega revealed a big update about Wednesday season 2 post-production. Ortega mentioned she's been doing Adr on season 2, which is usually one of the final steps for cast before a season is finished.

Here's what Ortega told Collider:

“We're still in the edit. I was doing Adr for it two weeks ago. That's the funny thing about these jobs is you're done, you wrap, but you're not really done. So, I'll probably be working on it until the end.”

The cast and crew finished filming season 2 at the end of 2024, and according to Ortega's latest update, things are progressing through post-production in the spring of 2025.

David Dastmalchian is set to guest star on Showtime’s “Dexter: Resurrection,” which began production in January and is slated to premiere this summer on Paramount+.

The actor, whose best known for his roles in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” and “The Dark Knight,” will portray a character named Gareth. Specific details about the role were not disclosed.

Dastmalchian’s other credits include “The Suicide Squad,” “Dune: Part One,” “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” and “Late Night with the Devil.” He’ll be seen next in Apple TV+’s “Murderbot” series premiering this May, and “Life of Chuck” debuting in June.

Dastmalchian is repped by Atlas Artists, Persona PR and attorney Duncan Hedges.

Netflix is in the process of developing a second season of “The Perfect Couple,” according to media reports.

After the first season of “The Perfect Couple” adapted Elin Hilderbrand’s novel of the same name, the second installment would be based on Hilderbrand’s “Swan Song,” which is also set in Nantucket. Season 2 is in development at Netflix, and, if greenlit, would shift “The Perfect Couple” from a limited series to an anthology series.

The new season would welcome aboard a new showrunner in Joanna Calo, who’s best known for co-showrunning and executive producing FX’s “The Bear.” Susanne Bier and Nicole Kidman, who starred in the first season, will return as EPs alongside Gail Berman, Shawn Levy, Hend Baghdady and Per Saari.

Showtime has announced that Krysten Ritter and Neil Patrick Harris (Uncoupled) will join the cast of the Showtime original series Dexter: Resurrection. Ritter will guest star in the role of “Mia” and Harris in the role of “Lowell.”

Production for Dexter: Resurrection kicked off in January 2025 in New York and the series is set to launch in summer of 2025 on Paramount+ with Showtime. The new original drama series stars SAG and Golden Globe winner Michael C. Hall in the titular role of Dexter Morgan.

Netflix has released its viewership figures for the second half of 2024, and they provide a (possibly) interesting bit of insight into its subscribers’ tastes.

The most obvious take-away is that Netflix customers really like their thrillers; festive airport nailbiter Carry-On, starring Taron Edgerton, continues to be one of the most successful original films the streaming firm has released in years. Despite releasing right at the end of last year, it was still the platform’s most-watched movie with 137.3m views.

Netflix is giving analysts and subscribers alike another look into what audiences watched on the streamer in 2024. The latest “What We Watched” report includes viewership data for all shows and movies in the Netflix library over the second half of 2024, and it includes some fascinating insights about the streamer. Perhaps unsurprisingly, “Squid Game” — which released its second season late in December — was the most watched show in the second half of they year, while Taron Egerton airplane thriller “Carry-On” was the most viewed film on the service.

Netflix has released its latest six-month trove of viewing data, and if the compilation of more than 15,000 series and movies points to anything, it’s how big a phenomenon Squid Game is.

Season two of the Korean hit was the most watched series worldwide in the second half of 2024, in both Netflix’s preferred view metric (86.5 million, measured by dividing viewing hours by running time) and total viewing time (619.9 million hours). Remarkably, it did all that in just six days — season two premiered on Dec. 26.

In under a week, Squid Game drew 69.5 million more viewing hours than the second-place show in that measure — Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, which accumulated 550.4 million hours in three-plus months after its Sept. 19 premiere. In views, Squid Game had 11.4 million more than The Perfect Couple (75.1 million), which also debuted in September and has a running time about two hours shorter than that of Squid Game.

“Carry-On” and “Squid Game” Season 2 were Netflix’s most-watched movie and show, respectively, during the second half of 2024.

Despite only debuting on Dec. 5, “Carry-On” logged 137.3 million views during the month, and ranked as the most-watched movie on the streamer from July to December 2024. The streamer shared the metrics in its bi-annual data dump. Viewership for “Carry-On” exceeded that of “The Union,” which was the second most-watched movie during the interval with 131.1 million views, as well as “Rebel Ridge,” which took third place with 129 million views.

Viewership for “Carry-on,” “The Union” and “Rebel Ridge” well exceeded that of other movies on the streamer, with “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” coming in fourth place with 97.1 million views while “Our Little Secret,” which was released in late November, took fifth place with 81.3 million views.

What are the key points that Netflix has cited as being the most important for this data drop? Netflix reiterated that Engagement (time spent watching) is the best metric to gauge member satisfaction and that this data drop covers ~99% of all video watch time on Netflix and that no single title accounts for more than 1% of total Netflix viewing.

Squid Game S2 had the most hours viewed (0.7% of total viewing), and their total watch time for this period of July to December 2024 was 94B hours (5% increase YoY). Their most-viewed series was Squid Game S2 (87M views) despite premiering only 6 days before year-end.

It feels like we have been waiting forever for Stranger Things season 5, and we kind of have been. The American Society of Cinematographers Awards were handed out Sunday night, with the film prize going to Edward Lachman for Maria.

This is Lachman’s first ASC win. He was previously nominated for Far From Heaven (2003), Mildred Pierce (2011), Carol (2016) and El Conde (2024). He received the ASC’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.

On the TV side, Richard Rutkowski won for Sugar in the episode of a half-hour series category, and Sam Mccurdy won for Shogun in the one-hour regular series category, while the limited or anthology series of motion picture made for television award went to Robert Elswit for Ripley.

The Spotlight Award was awarded to Jomo Fray, cinematographer of Nickel Boys.

UK chart-topper Phil Collins has seemingly pulled down the curtain on his long career, saying he has no wish to make any further music.

The former Genesis frontman and solo superstar, now 74, told Mojo magazine:

“I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I’m not hungry for it anymore.”

Collins toured for a final time with his former band Genesis in 2022, but his frail physical health meant he performed from a chair on stage. He told Mojo:

Exclusive: Emily In Paris creator Darren Star and New Amsterdam creator David Schulner have teamed for Uncorked, a half-hour, single-camera dramedy that has landed at Netflix with a script-to-series commitment, sources tell Deadline.

Details of the premise are being kept under wraps, but I hear the series is set in Napa Valley and, like many of Star’s series, has a female lead.

Star and Schulner are co-writing and executive producing Uncorked through Universal Television, part of Universal Studio Group, where Star has an overall and Schulner a first-look deal.

The duo recently pitched the show, which had five buyers pursuing it in a competitive situation, I hear. Uncorked ultimately landed at Netflix, home of Star’s rom-com hit Emily In Paris, with a significant script-to-series commitment.

Reps for Netflix and Universal TV declined comment.

Universal snapped up the rights to the debut novel by Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas last year, with Star attached, even though the book still hasn't even been published. The novel hits shelves on April 29.

The Last Showgirl also won in the film categories, while TV winners include Emily in Paris, Bridgerton, Abbott Elementary, Saturday Night Live, Dancing with the Stars and Avatar: The Last Airbender, among others.

The Muahs Awards “recognize excellence in the artistry and creativity of make-up artists and hair stylists in 23 categories, including motion pictures, television, music videos and theater entertainment,” according to the guild. This year, the theater category expanded to include Broadway and international theater productions.

It was a good thing, since Wicked took two of the night’s biggest prizes for Best Period and/or Character Make-Up and Best Period and/or Character Hair Styling in a Feature Length Motion Picture.

The guild held its 12th annual awards ceremony at a new venue, moving from the Beverly Hilton Hotel to the Fairmont Plaza in Century City.

IATSE President Matthew Loeb started the show and called on Local 706 members to be generous “in this time.”

Loeb says, “There’s much to celebrate the incredible work that the members of local 706 do, their spirit of perseverance, appreciation of life, life in the arts, and their determination to rebuild.”

Netflix narrowed the release window for the next season of its popular romantic comedy Emily in Paris.

Lily Collins leads the Netflix drama as the titular Emily, an American marketing executive who takes her expertise overseas to a firm in Paris (and eventually other spots around Europe). 

Season 4 of Emily in Paris was split into two parts, with the last dropping in September 2024. While it has only been a few months, fans are already eager for more.

The Casting Society held ceremonies in Los Angeles, New York and London.

Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Peter Dinklage has officially joined the series regular cast of the Showtime Original Series Dexter: Resurrection, from executive producer and showrunner Clyde Phillips. Production began in New York last month and will premiere this summer.

No official synopsis for the Michael C. Hall-led series has been revealed, but it’s the continuation of Dexter: New Blood set in the present day.

Dinklage will portray Leon Prater, a billionaire venture capitalist. To the world, Leon is a generous philanthropist, but behind his polished exterior lies dark intrigue. Deadline understands Dinklage is playing the big baddy of the season.
