Exclusive: In a week that controversy surrounding Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story was generating headlines aplenty for Netflix, an old British show quietly slipped into the streamer’s UK top 10, neatly demonstrating something of a 2024 viewing trend.

The Toby Jones-starring drama series Capital premiered on the BBC in 2015 and yet here it was sitting sixth in Netflix’s most-watched list after being acquired by the streamer almost a decade later.

The Handmaids Tale star Joseph Fiennes and Designated Survivors Natascha McElhone are officially joining the cast of Amazon MGM Studios upcoming Young Sherlock series. This marks Fiennes first project with real-life nephew Hero Tiffin Fiennes, who is set to portray the teenage version of the titular detective.

According to Deadline, Fiennes and McElhone have been cast for the respective roles of Silas and Cordelia Holmes, who will be introduced as Sherlock Holmes parents in the Prime Video series. Silas is described as a "scientist, explorer and self-made businessman," while Cordelia is characterized as a "devoted mother, artist and matriarch of the Holmes clan." Exclusive: All Creatures Great and Small scribe Jamie Crichton is taking on ITV’s latest campaigning drama, a series about the fight to repeal the notorious double jeopardy law starring Sheridan Smith.

Details about the drama first started emerging last night and we can reveal it will be titled I Fought the Law and is produced by Mary & George indie Hera Pictures.

Based on Ann Ming’s book For the Love of Julie, the series tells the heart-breaking story of Ming’s 15-year-long battle for her daughter Julie’s murderer to face justice. Ming’s daughter was found in the bathroom of her house in 1990, 80 days after she had disappeared, and the man who killed her was twice acquitted following mistrials before eventually admitting to the murder. The archaic double jeopardy law meant he couldn’t be tried twice for the same crime and it is this law that Ming and her family successfully overturned.

The Wire is a profound and impactful show that explores timeless issues about American society, leaving a lasting impact on television. Certain episodes, like "Port in a Storm," "Sentencing," and "Margin of Error," bring out the best in The Wire, offering compelling storylines and themes. Exclusive: Sheridan Smith and Céline Buckens have been cast as sisters in The Castaways, a Paramount+ drama series based on Lucy Clarke’s novel.

Smith will play Lori and Buckens is her sibling Erin in the thriller, which marks Clarke’s second series adaptation for Paramount+’s UK service.

After they have a huge flight, Lori boards a plane to Fiji, while Erin does not. The flight never arrives at its tropical destination and months later no wreckage has been located. Erin suddenly hears Lori’s credit card has been used on a remote Fijian island and she later recognizes the pilot on CCTV. She boards a plane to Fiji to track down the truth.

Banijay has boarded “Countrymen,” a new drama series produced by its Norwegian label, Rubicon, with a cast of Scandinavian stars, including Nader Khademi (“Ninjababy”), Ayaz Hussain (“Kasim Bæder”), Jonas Strand Gravli (“Ragnarok”) Arben Bala (“Lilyhammer”) and Erika Strand Mamelund.

The show will world premiere at Cannes Series and has been commissioned by the public broadcaster Nrk, in co-production with Arte France. Banijay Rights will handle world sales on the eight-part series.

“Countrymen” follows four men who move to a farm in the rural Norwegian countryside and end up founding Norway’s first halal cheesemaking business more or less against their will.

Exclusive: Chernobyl and His Dark Materials actor Robert Emms has joined the cast of Lucasfilm and Disney+’s Rogue One spinoff series Andor, which is currently filming in the UK.

The action adventure series centers on the Cassian Andor character prior to the events of Rogue One in the early days of the rebellion against the Empire.

Also starring with Luna are Adria Arjona, Denise Gough, Genevieve O’Reilly, Stellan Skarsgard, Fiona Shaw, and Kyle Soller.

Toby Haynes is lead director on the 12-episode first season, which is due to launch in 2022. Ben Caron and Susanna White will also direct episodes. Writers include Stephen Schiff and Tony Gilroy. Filming is due to wrap this summer.

Neal Scanlan has been part of the creature and droid effects for the series after doing the same for all of Disney’s Star Wars films, including Rogue One.

HBO unveiled the first trailer for season 2 of “His Dark Materials,” which played at the very beginning of the show’s Comic-Con@Home panel. The biggest piece of news to emerge from the panel, however, is that a “Fleabag” reunion is on the cards, given that Phoebe Waller-Bridge will voice the dæmon of Andrew Scott’s Colonel John Parry.

Many are doubtless hoping for the sake of irony that Waller-Bridge will play a fox, but in the books Parry’s dæmon Sayan Kötör takes the form of an osprey. Scott of course played the fox-averse “Host Priest” in season 2 of Waller-Bridge’s acclaimed comedy.

In revealing the reunion, Scott kept viewers on tenterhooks by saying that his dæmon would be played by “someone who is very close to me in my real life: a young performer and writer called Phoebe Waller-Bridge.”

“His Dark Materials” has added three key players to its season 2 cast.

Legendary British actor Terence Stamp is joining the cast of the HBO series for its second outing, alongside “Cleaning Up” star Jade Anouka and “Peaky Blinders” alumna Simone Kirby. The casting announcement comes just ahead of the show’s Comic Con panel, which is taking place later this afternoon.

Based on “The Subtle Knife” (the second novel in Philip Pullman’s trilogy), season 2 will find Lyra (Dafne Keen) in a strange and mysterious abandoned city called Cittàgazze, where she meets Will, the boy first seen in the human world in season one, who is also running from a troubled past.

Stamp will play the role of Giacomo Paradisi, the bearer of the Subtle Knife who lives in the Tower of the Angels in Cittàgazze. Anouka will play Ruta Skadi, a witch Queen who joins forces with Serafina Pekkala against the Magisterium.

Exclusive: Golden Globe-winning actor Terence Stamp, Turn Up Charlie star Jade Anouka and Peaky Blinders actress Simone Kirby are joining the cast of His Dark Materials for the second season.

The BBC and HBO drama, made by Bad Wolf, is gearing up for Season 2 later this year, and will be based on The Subtle Knife — the second book in Philip Pullman’s acclaimed trilogy of novels about the adventures of Lyra Belacqua.

Ahead of His Dark Materials being the focus of a San Diego Comic-Con session today, Deadline can reveal that Stamp is joining the cast as Giacomo Paradisi, the bearer of the Subtle Knife who lives in the Torre de Angeli (Tower of the Angels) in Cittàgazze.

Stamp, who won a Globe and was Oscar-nominated for his performance in 1962’s Billy Budd, is no stranger to His Dark Materials having previously featured in a BBC Radio 4 dramatization of Pullman’s work.

The BBC has commissioned a UK version of Pooch Perfect, the competitive reality series based on the UK/Australian format.

English actress/singer Sheridan Smith will host the eight-part UK series, produced by Seven Studios UK.

The format was created by Seven Studios’ UK head of development Nikki Pinkus, creative director Damon Pattison and Sonya Wilkes, co-head of unscripted for Seven Studios Australia.

Rebel Wilson hosts the Aussie production, which premiered on February 27 on the Seven Network, winning its 7.30 pm slot in all people and key 25-54 demographic.

However the ratings for the second series in the mainland capitals averaged 441,000, down from the premiere’s 624,000, suggesting a short-lived novelty factor.

Seven Studios UK’s first original commission, the series will feature 10 pairs of professional dog stylists from around the country as they take part in themed challenges to transform pets as they vie for the title of the UK’s top dog stylist.

The BBC is searching for the UK’s top dog stylist in Pooch Perfect in its latest entertainment format – a version of which is on air in Australia fronted by Rebel Wilson.

The British public broadcaster has tapped Cleaning Up and The Moorside star Sheridan Smith to front the series for BBC One.

The eight-part primetime entertainment format features ten pairs of professional dog stylists from around the country, taking part in a series of themed challenges to create epic transformations of beloved pets, as they compete to be crowned the ‘UK’s Top Dog Stylist’.

Each week, the teams will reveal their creations on ‘The Dogwalk’, where the judges will deliberate over the week’s canine contenders, and their owners are given the chance to see their newly transformed dogs for the first time. It will also feature a slew of celebrity guest judges.

ITV taking an initial 90% stake in the forthcoming SVoD venture, which will launch in Q4 this year.

ITV will be the driving force behind BritBox after taking an initial 90% stake in the forthcoming SVoD joint venture with the BBC.

The two partners have laid out a series of details about the service, which will launch in the final quarter of 2019 at a cost of £5.99 a month - undercutting Netflix’s standard UK tariff by £3 a month.

In keeping with the 90/10 equity split, BritBox will be an ITV-controlled venture, but the corporation will contribute to the development of its core purposes and its strategic direction.

The UK iteration of BritBox, the Svod service run by ITV and the BBC, is set to launch in the second half of 2019.

ITV CEO Carolyn McCall said the digital platform was “on track” to make its launch by the end of the year. This comes as the commercial British broadcaster faces a number of advertising challenges. Total advertisting was down 7% across the first quarter of the year with broadcast and online revenue also down 7% to £489M (Us$637M) in the period.

McCall noted that total advertising was also expected to be down 6% over the first half of 2019 as ITV is impacted by the “continuing economic and political uncertainty and its effect on the demand for advertising” and the absence of a major football tournament in the summer.

One bright spot was the continued performance of ITV Studios, the production company that makes shows including Love Island and Bodyguard, which saw revenue up 1% to £385M.

The “Game of Thrones” prequel pilot at HBO is taking shape.

Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp, and Toby Regbo have all joined the pilot in series regular roles. They join previously announced cast members Naomi Watts and Josh Whitehouse. As with all things “Game of Thrones,” the exact nature of each of their roles is being kept under wraps.

In addition, Sj Clarkson has signed on to direct the pilot in addition to serving as an executive producer. Clarkson was most recently selected to direct the next film in the rebooted “Star Trek” franchise. She also recently executive produced and directed the limited series “Collateral” for BBC and Netflix. Her other directing credits include: the Marvel-Netflix shows “The Defenders” and “Jessica Jones,” the Netflix series “Orange Is the New Black,” HBO’s “Vinyl” and “Succession,” and Showtime’s “Dexter.

ITV Studios, producer of reality series Love Island and terror drama Bodyguard, continues to perform well for the British commercial broadcaster with revenues up 10% over the first nine months of the year.

The results, which are part of ITV’s Q3 trading statement and run to the end of September 2018, helped total external revenue grow 6%.

It also noted that online viewing on its digital service ITV Hub was up 37% and ITV CEO Carolyn McCall revealed that it would make an update on its Svod plans in February.

McCall also pointed to forthcoming dramas such as Cheat, Cleaning Up, Manhunt and The Widow as well as World on Fire, Noughts and Crosses, Wild Bill, The Bay and Zero Zero Zero and CBS’ remake of Love Island.
