While it seems most critics and cinephiles think of Takashi Miike when it comes to a director who displays a certain work ethic, there is, however, very few talk about Hong Kong director Johnnie To. Over the course of his long career, To has maintained a steady and constant pace consisting of three to four and sometimes even five features per year and while the quality of some of these features may vary, there is no denying the director has also many strong years under his belt. For example, in 2005 and 2006 he produced and directed “Election” and its sequel as well as “Exiled”, three movies which are perhaps among the best of To’s filmography. Along with works such as “Fulltime Killer”, the “Running Out of Time”-films and “Vengeance” To has proven to be a director who follows the footsteps of filmmakers like John Woo, but who expands their...

Lee Chang-dong’s missing-person drama was a flickering gem that forwent easy thrills for a deeply unsettling unresolvedness
The 50 best films of 2019 in the UKMore best culture of 2019
South Korea has claimed its place at international cinema’s top table over the last couple of decades, what with the baroque savagery of Park Chan-wook’s Vengeance trilogy and the razor-sharp precision of Bong Joon-ho’s social parables – culminating in his Palme d’Or win for Parasite. With all the big beasts out there, it would have been a shame if this remarkable film from Lee Chang-dong had been crowded out.
Burning is adapted from a short story Barn Burning by Haruki Murakami. Jong-su is directionless twentysomething, an aspiring writer with a fondness for William Faulkner and saddled with an aggressive father – whose arrest and trial for assault means Jong-su has to spend long hours at the family farm looking after the livestock.

We have a little, possibly intriguing tidbit of information regarding The Batman. The long-gestating project has finally been picking up steam in recent months and is gearing up to shoot early next year. Matt Reeves was originally hired to direct in early 2017 and has been working on the screenplay ever since. Now, with Robert Pattinson set as our new Caped Crusader, cameras are nearly ready to roll. And we have just learned what the working title during production is going to be.
According to a new report, The Batman will be shooting under the title Vengeance. For those who may not know, working titles are used during filming, often on bigger movies, to either hide the real title or to help disguise the movie during production. Sometimes, they can hint at possible elements of the story. Though, more often than not, they end up not meaning much. Still, given that...

We look at the sequences that would have changed the legacies – and future franchise directions – of the films they were cut from.
The editing process of a feature film can prove precarious at the best of times. You can have the best script in the world, a great cast, and some impressive work in the can, but it’s only when the action heads to the edit suite that a film really starts to take shape.
It’s a time-consuming process and one fraught with difficult decisions – particularly in the modern era of ever-expanding movie franchises. Get it right and the results will engage and entertain audiences while leaving them wanting more of the same. Get it wrong, however, and a once-promising premise that could have paved the way for sequels, prequels, and an extended cinematic universe can crumble to dust.

The screenwriter and the director of the original Friday the 13th are currently playing tug-of-war with the rights to the series in a never-ending legal battle, but that isn't keeping Jason Voorhees from upping his body count. With no hope of seeing the trademark hockey mask back on the big screen anytime soon, filmmakers have since taken to producing Friday the 13th fan films to continue the series. Because so many fans of the franchise are dying to see more bloodshed from Jason, the crowdfunding campaign for the fan film Friday the 13th: Vengeance was highly successful, and the movie has since made its way online.
In Friday the 13th: Vengeance, two former Jason Voorhees actors appear as new characters, marking interesting returns for both of them. Jason Lives actor C.J. Graham appears in a major role in the movie as Elias Voorhees, Jason's father. Although the character has appeared in various comic books,...

A report has surfaced from McU Cosmic that Marvel Studio is planning to introduce Miss America, a.k.a. America Chavez to the McU at some point in the future.
I guess this really shouldn’t come as a surprise, as any Marvel character that celebrates diversity will probably end up finding their way into the McU at some point! For those of you not familiar with the character, she is a a Latin-American gay immigrant superheroine who was a member of the short-lived New Teen Brigade, the Young Avengers, and the Ultimates. She is a tough, no nonsense super heroine, yet one with a genuine desire to help others and do good.
The report speculates that her inclusion furthers Marvel’s possible plans to assemble The Ultimates in the McU. Other members of that team include Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Monica Rambeau.

It’s official: Marta Fernandez has been named President of Macro Television Studios, joining the financing and production company founded by former Wme Partner Charles D. King as it ramps up its TV operations. As we reported last month when Fernandez stepped down as Evp Original Programming at Starz, she had been in talks with Macro.
Macro’s TV series slate includes Gentefied, a half-hour bilingual dramedy from Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez for Netflix; Raising Dion, also for Netflix; Dawn, an adaptation of Octavia E. Butler’s book from Ava DuVernay and Victoria Mahoney; a Tupac Shakur documentary series, with Allen Hughes directing; and documentary The Apollo, helmed by Roger Ross Williams.

Fernandez will oversee MacRo’s television slate, which includes “Gentefied,” “Dawn,” and the Michael B. Jordan-produced “Raising Dion” for Netflix. Allen Hughes is also directing a five-part docuseries on Tupac Shakur with the full cooperation of the late rapper’s estate.

Fernandez’s exit comes amid an executive transition at the pay cable network following the departure of CEO Chris Albrecht earlier this year as Starz and Lionsgate recently accelerated their integration with the merging of several TV operations. (Original programming was not one of them).
In her most recent role, to which Fernandez was named in December, Fernandez expanded her leadership within the originals team while continuing to spearhead the network’s inclusion initiatives across the slate. Here’s a collaboration you never knew you needed until now: Park Chan-wook and S. Craig Zahler are teaming for the ultra-violent western “The Brigands of Rattlecreek.” Park will direct from a script by Zahler, and the long-gestating project finally has a home in Amazon Studios. Zahler’s script received pride of place on the 2006 Black List, when it was still called “The Brigands of Rattleborge.”
According to Collider, which first reported that Amazon picked up the project, “Rattlecreek” follows “a sheriff and a doctor who seek revenge against a group of bandits who use the cover of a torrential thunderstorm to rob and terrorize the occupants of a small town.” Anyone who saw “Bone Tomahawk” knows that Zahler is no stranger to disturbing violence in a gunslinging setting, but whether his latest has as out-there a climax remains to be seen. Vengeance is a tricky business.
That was the message hammered home by both plotlines on NCIS: New Orleans Season 5 Episode 14.
The best part of the episode was the return of conspiratorial vlogger Oliver Crane.
Oliver began as a thorn in Pride's side on NCIS: New Orleans Season 4 Episode 22 but then became part of the off-the-books team helping to clear Pride's name on NCIS: New Orleans Season 4 Episode 23.
Oliver is an abrasive, stereotypical journalist but for one thing: he's rarely constricted by facts. Instead, he offers up a lot of theories, few of which are substantiated.
That's why it was funny when Oliver hid a flash drive inside a copy of a prestigious journalism award, which Pride realized immediately was out of place.
It was hard to tell if Oliver has fallen on hard times or if his loft had just been stripped by whoever broke in.

That was the message hammered home by both plotlines on NCIS: New Orleans Season 5 Episode 14.
The best part of the episode was the return of conspiratorial vlogger Oliver Crane.

Olinka Berova is as sexy as Ursula Andress, but even with a new woman producer Hammer’s She sequel doesn’t give her new She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed much of a chance — the story just sits there and the kingdom of Kuma is woefully under-produced. Good photography and acting help, but one doesn’t earn high marks for the Boys from Bray.
