Studio 100 Intl. is to produce animated adventure “Arnie & Barney,” a spin-off from the hit “Maya the Bee” franchise, with delivery planned for the first quarter 2026. Studio 100 Film is handling global sales and will present the project at AFM in Las Vegas. Variety debuts the teaser below.
“Arnie & Barney” brings ants Arnie and Barney, recurring characters from “Maya the Bee,” to the forefront. The film will deliver “a blend of action, humor, friendship and heroism,” Studio 100 Intl. said.
“Arnie & Barney” follows a platoon of ants during a severe drought, who set out to save their community, but the “hilariously inept” Arnie and Barney – who are not cut out for heroics – decide to tackle the problem themselves. Their bumbling efforts lead them to uncover a shady water racket and team up with a secretive superhero mosquito. In a series of comical mishaps, they inadvertently save the meadow and become the most unlikely heroes of all.

In the animated comedy film 200% Wolf, Australian director Alexs Stadermann continues the tale of young Freddy Lupin. As fans will recall from the previous film 100% Wolf, Freddy comes from a family of werewolves but finds himself transforming into a pink poodle each night rather than a wolf like his relatives. Understandably, this leads Freddy to feel like an outsider in his own pack.
Seeking to gain the respect of his peers and live up to his father’s legacy as pack leader, Freddy embarks on a heroic rescue mission in this sequel. However, things don’t exactly go according to plan. In his desperation, Freddy recklessly calls upon the magical moon spirits for help, unleashing unintended consequences in the form of a troublesome but good-hearted baby moon spirit named Moopoo.

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.
The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

Hopefully March will bring respite from crippling snow storms and frigid temperatures for much of the globe. And if it doesn’t? Well, Hulu’s got some new streaming options at least!
Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2021 are relatively slight on Hulu originals. Thankfully, one beloved original of note is coming back this month. Solar Opposites will premiere all episodes of its second season on March 26. This sci-fi animated comedy from Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland is a breath of fresh alien air.

Even as Covid-19 reduces travel, the public is in a holiday mood. Along with anecdotal reports of near-record Christmas tree sales and an increase of home-lighting displays, we say 11 Christmas-related films flourish this week on VOD and streaming charts. This includes some overlap between home viewing and theaters, as well as some oddball trends that suggest the platforms increasingly bleed into one another.
Our four charts each have a different film at #1; another two titles made all four charts. Apple TV has “The Grinch” on top even after weeks of Netflix play. GooglePlay still ranks “The New Mutants” as #1. Premium VOD entry “Let Him Go” leads at Spectrum, which counts by transactions; with a $19.99 price, that’s impressive. Revenue-based FandangoNow leads with “Honest Thief,” one of the top theatrical releases this fall. It has a mid-level PVOD price of $14.99, but as a new release this week it outpaced three more-expensive films.

Paris-based company Alba Films has acquired French distribution rights to Sabrina Van Tassel’s timely social justice documentary “The State of Texas vs. Melissa.”
The documentary premiered at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival and recently made its U.K. debut at the Raindance Film Festival where it won the best documentary award. FilmRise holds theatrical and digital rights to the film for North America, the U.K. and Ireland.
Set in the heart of the Latino community of South Texas, the film explores the life and trials of Melissa Lucio, the first Hispanic woman sentenced to death row in Texas, the state responsible for the most executions in America since 1976. Lucio, who was blamed for the abuse and subsequent death of her two-year-old daughter, has been on death row for 12 years.
Her conviction was recently overturned, but the State immediately appealed that ruling. Lucio is now awaiting the State’s appeal.
