Inventing Anna

I Can’t Watch Julia Garner’s Netflix Series Without Thinking Of That Jennifer Lopez Film
Image
Watching Julia Garner’s Inventing Anna (2022) on Netflix, it is hard not to think of Jennifer Lopez’s Hustlers (2019). Both based on true stories and sharing themes, the series and the film also share a connection that many people are unaware of.

Both projects are actually rooted in journalist Jessica Pressler’s work, sharing stories of deception and ambition. Pressler, a longtime New York magazine journalist, covered both stories extensively, leading to both of her articles later being adapted into Hollywood projects.

The Jessica Pressler Connection: From Hustlers to Inventing Anna Hustlers | Credits: STX Entertainment

Jessica Pressler, a contributing editor at New York magazine, is the journalist who penned two articles that birthed both Jennifer Lopez‘s Hustlers and Julia Garner‘s Netflix series, Inventing Anna.

Her 2015 piece, The Hustlers at Scores, detailed how a crew of strippers in New York City schemed to drug and rob high-end clients, running up their credit cards.

Netflix Is Now Streaming All 7 Seasons of One of the Top TV Hits of the 2010s
Image
If you’ve been craving a new binge-watch you can really sink your teeth into, Netflix just added all seven seasons from one of the best Shondaland series from the ABC era — the extremely juicy political drama, “Scandal.”

The acclaimed hit series stars Kerry Washington as the now-iconic Olivia Pope, former media consultant (and lover) to the president, who shaped his campaign from a diamond in the rough to the leader of the free world … until she decided to strike out on her own with her esteemed and feared crisis-management firm.

Creator Shonda Rhimes is a familiar name on Netflix, where her Shondaland banner has produced the juggernaut period romance hit “Bridgerton,” as well as its spinoff series “Queen Charlotte,” Emmy-nominated miniseries “Inventing Anna” and, most recently, a return to the White House in the charming murder-mystery “The Residence.” But before her beaucoup bucks streaming megadeal with Netflix, Rhimes was...

Scandal Cast: Where Are They Now?
Image
It’s saying something that people Still talk about Scandal years after the series closed the chapter on Olivia Pope and company.

When the series premiered, it featured some recognizable faces. Still, several actors weren’t immediately familiar to audiences, yet became big stars during the series’ primetime reign.

Now that the series has been over for seven years (!), we decided to take a look to see what the cast has been up to lately.

(ABC/Screenshot)

For some, their work has stayed in front of the camera, but several cast members have also done a lot of work behind the camera.

Star Kerry Washington has been involved in numerous projects as her career continues to rise, reaching new heights during the Scandal era.

Kerry Washington's 7-Season Political Drama With 93% On Rt Is Coming To Netflix This June
Image
Kerry Washington’s hit political drama, Scandal, is coming to Netflix in June 2025. While there are a number of Shonda Rhimes’ TV shows on the streaming platform, including Bridgerton, Inventing Anna, and The Residence, Scandal hasn’t been available for streaming on Netflix even though it was released 13 years ago and remains popular to this day. The series, which centers around Olivia Pope and her employees as they try to fix PR problems for Washington's elite, is an intense TV show that doesn’t have any dull moments.

According to a recent report by Netflix, Scandal is set to arrive on the streaming platform on June 17, 2025. The critically acclaimed political drama ran for seven seasons from 2012 to 2018 and aired on ABC for its entire duration. Given the success that classic series like Suits have had on Netflix, it’s only right that one of the best TV shows from...

New Netflix Thriller About Real-Life Murder Becomes Streamer's #1 Movie Worldwide
Image
A new Netflix thriller inspired by a real murder has become a major hit. Netflix is a major subscription streaming service that has a library of licensed movie and television titles that includes major hits like Suits, but is perhaps best known for its original movies and television shows. Titles that have become global smash successes include the South Korean survival thriller series Squid Game, the Taron Egerton Tsa thriller movie Carry-On, the Addams Family reimagining Wednesday, and the 1980s-set sci-fi fantasy show Stranger Things.

One particularly robust genre for Netflix across all mediums is true crime. They have found success with a number of true crime documentaries and docuseries including Tiger King and Don't F**k with Cats. However, they have also had hit movies and TV shows that are dramatizations of true crime stories featuring actors portraying the real life figures, including the scam series Inventing Anna (which...

The Devil Wears Prada 2: Everything We Know So Far
Image
It's official: "The Devil Wears Prada," the beloved fashion comedy that first came out in 2006, is getting a sequel. So what do we need to know?

I'll be honest and say that, as of this writing, the details about this sequel are somewhat vague. The original was based on Lauren Weisberger's 2003 novel of the same name, which the author says was itself based on her own personal experiences working underneath magazine maven Anna Wintour at Vogue. In 2013, Weisberger released a sequel titled "Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns," which sees the book's version of Andrea "Andy" Sachs reunite with Miranda Priestly years after working as her second assistant at the fictional publication Runway. What we do know about "The Devil Wears Prada 2," though, is that it's not set to follow the same plot as Weisberger's literary sequel.

It's not entirely surprising that we're getting a second "The Devil Wears Prada" film,...

Image
Get into the groove! Madonna's long-gestating biopic has officially taken on a new shape and landed at a brand-new home. The project once destined to bring the Queen of Pop's life story to the big screen has now substantially expanded its reach in more ways than one.

On May 12, Deadline reported that Madonna has now teamed with Netflix to create a limited series based on her life. The developing series will be executive produced by Stranger Things producer and Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy. See? The scope has shifted dramatically from a movie to a multi-episode limited series. More Madonna! And she's brought in the best of the best.

That's not even the best part, at least not the part that has me the most excited. When Madonna's biopic was still in development as a film, a number of young actresses were vying for the coveted part, with three-time...

Madonna Teams With Deadpool & Wolverine Director for Netflix Biopic Series, With New MCU Star Likely to Lead
Image
In the past few years, there have been many conversations about a biopic about the Queen of Pop, Madonna. Now, the project is closer to happening thanks to the Deadpool & Wolverine director.

Per Deadline, Madonna has struck a deal with Netflix for a limited series about her life and music. The project is in early development, and the global superstar also paired up with Shawn Levy, whose 21 Laps has an exclusive TV deal with the platform, who will also produce the limited series. The news comes after several failed projects about Madonna's life.

Madonna and Levy have reportedly been discussing the project for a while. At the same time, they will also start from zero. Last year, a Madonna biopic was shelved, which would've starred three-time Emmy-winning actress Julia Garner as the Queen of Pop after months of auditions.

The limited series is in its early days of development, and...

Madonna’s Life Story to Be Adapted Into Netflix Limited Series from Shawn Levy — Report
Image
Madonna might be appearing on the small screen soon. The iconic singer will be at the center of a Netflix limited series about her life and music, according to a new Deadline report. Netflix did not confirm the project to IndieWire.

Per Deadline, Madonna will executive produce alongside “Stranger Things” EP Shawn Levy, whose 21 Laps banner has an exclusive TV overall deal at Netflix. Madonna is repped by CAA, Maverick Management, Untitled Entertainment, and Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks. Levy and 21 Laps are repped by WME and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.

As Deadline noted, the slated series is not affiliated with the long-gestating film biopic about the “Like a Virgin” icon; that film was previously in development at Universal with Emmy winner Julia Garner set to portray Madonna as of June 2022.

Yet, Deadline cited the rumor that despite the project being separate from the feature, Garner could still be cast in the lead,...

Leigh Whannell, the writer behind the first three Saw features and the first two Insidiousmovies, has cemented his reputation as a great, creative figure in the horror world. He made his directorial debut with Insidious: Chapter 3 in 2015 and later delivered the highly underrated action-horror film Upgradein 2018. In 2020, Whannell released The Invisible Man, which quickly became one of the most acclaimed horror films in recent years. So, expectations for his next project were reasonably high. However, his recent project, Wolf Man, failed to live up to the legacy of his earlier works. Apart from receiving unfavorable feedback from critics and audiences alike, it also fell short at the box office. Luckily, the film seems to have found the right audience and has even claimed the top spot in Peacock's streaming charts, just a few days after it debuted on the platform on April 18.

The current viewership record is a win...

New Universal Monsters Film Finds Redemption on Streaming After Disastrous Box Office Run
Image
Universal Pictures owns the rights to a series of iconic horror characters from different classic novels, including Frankenstein's Monster, The Mummy, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Invisible Man, Count Dracula, and others. Many have been successfully adapted in the classic era, but Universal has struggled with its remakes.

The latest Universal Monsters project was Wolf Man, which premiered in early 2025. The horror film had a lot of potential, as the studio was still basking in the success of 2020's The Invisible Man, and had hired the same director, Leigh Whannell, for the project. Although Wolf Man didn't live up to expectations, both critically and commercially, it has become a hit on Peacock following its recent release on streaming, per FlixPatrol.

Wolf Man debuted on Peacock on April 18 after its release in theaters on Jan. 17. It didn't take long for the horror film to claw its way to the...

‘Adolescence’ Tops Nielsen Charts; ‘The White Lotus’ & ‘Severance’ Reach New Series High Weekly Viewership
Image
It should come as no surprise that Netflix’s Adolescence shot to the top of the Nielsen charts during the week of March 17 to March 23, when it racked up 1.44B in its first full week on the streamer.

Adolescence saw its watch time increase 59% over its debut weekend, per Nielsen, with adults 35-64 making up 56% of the audience.

Notably, The Residence came in second place after debuting on March 20, managing 1.36B minutes viewed. As Deadline previously reported, this was a modest start for Shonda Rhimes’ latest foray, given the popularity of Bridgerton and Inventing Anna. Although it’s not far behind Adolescence, the run time of The Residence is far greater, which inflates watch time metrics that Nielsen reports.

Reacher fell to fourth place on the overall charts with 1.13B minutes viewed and was also the only other streaming original in the Top 5.

However, there were still some other notable streaming series wins,...

The Fantastic Four are known are Marvel’s “First Family” but this summer, they will technically be newbies to the MCU. Of course, we’re using that term very loosely.

‘Adolescence’ Doubles Premiere Week Viewership To Lead Netflix TV Charts Again; ‘The Residence’ Off To Modest Start
Image
Netflix’s modest British limited series Adolescence has continued to captivate audiences, while Shondaland’s latest offering The Residence seemed to debut below expectations.

Adolescence amassed 42M views from March 17 to 23, nearly double the audience from its debut week. This is an incredibly impressive performance for the series, which has now tallied 66.3M views in just two weeks of availability. Deadline also reported earlier Tuesday that the series made ratings history in the UK.

The outsize success makes a great case for the series to continue marching into Netflix’s most popular series list. In tenth place currently is Bridgerton Season 2, which came in at 93.8M views in its first 91 days. Adolescence would only need 27.5M views to overtake Bridgerton.

Speaking of Shondaland, the prolific producer’s latest series The Residence came in second place on the English TV list with 6.4M views. While this isn’t a terrible performance,...

How Kaitlyn Dever can pull a Julia Garner at the Emmys
Image
This year, Kaitlyn Dever is starring on two TV shows, playing a key supporting role on a popular drama series and portraying a fraudster on a Netflix limited series. If you're feeling déjà vu, there's good reason. In 2022, Julia Garner was in the same boat, and if history repeats, Dever could also mimic Garner's Emmy trajectory.

Garner scored double Emmy nominations for Best Drama Supporting Actress for Ozark and Best Limited/TV Movie Actress for Inventing Anna. The former was no surprise since she had already won twice for her fan-favorite portrayal of Ruth Langmore, and this was for Ozark's fourth and final season, in which Garner had a meaty episode. The latter bid was also expected by nomination morning — she was in fourth place in the Gold Derby odds — as the actress drew praise for her committed turn as con artist Anna Sorokin/Anna Delvey, with the daffiest of accents,...

‘The Residence’ at the Emmys: Which categories can the murder mystery crack?
Image
Is there room for two shows about murders inside a building at the Emmys? Netflix's The Residence stars Uzo Aduba as Cordelia Cupp, the world's greatest detective who's called to solve a murder at the White House. The murder mystery premiered on Thursday with all eight episodes and is entering in comedy at the Emmys. So which categories does it stand the best shot at cracking?

Best Comedy Actress

Aduba could wind up with the only Emmy nomination for The Residence and no one would be shocked. An Emmy darling, she's a five-time nominee with three wins, two for Orange Is the New Black and one for Mrs. America (Best Limited/TV Movie Supporting Actress in 2020). The Orange Is the New Black victories made her the second person after Ed Asner to win comedy and drama Emmys for the same role. She's currently in ninth place in the Gold Derby odds,...
