Why Netflix likely canceled The Waterfront before season 2
Image
Even though The Waterfront seemed to be one of the more promised new Netflix original series of this summer, the streamer opted to cancel the modest freshman hit rather than giving it a second season. The Buckley family's dark and dangerous business dealings with drug dealers won't continue in spite of a chilling season 2 twist being teased at the end of season 1.

In the weeks following the show's release, The Waterfront season 2 seemed all but guaranteed. The series spent three consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the top 10 most-watched English TV List, and in the US, the show stayed put in the top 10 most popular shows ranking for over a month.

Netflix Cancels The Waterfront Yet One Character Deserves a Taylor Sheridan Spin
Image
Despite spending five weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10 (including three straight weeks at No. 1 with over 11.6 million views), Kevin Williamson’s The Waterfront has unexpectedly been canceled after just one season by the streaming giant (via Deadline). The crime drama was centered around the Buckley family of North Carolina and garnered an impressive 68% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Released on June 19, it did pretty well compared to the other two dramas Netflix has canceled this year, Pulse and The Residence. Led by Holt McCallany’s patriarch Harlan Buckley, the series delivered a bleak, intense portrait of loyalty, desperation, and legacy. It comes as a shock that the show wouldn’t return,...

Why Netflix Canceled The Waterfront After Just One Season
Image
When "Scream" creator Kevin Williamson's latest television series, "The Waterfront," hit Netflix on June 19, 2025, it struck many critics as an entertainingly pulpy crime drama that would likely stick around for at least another season. The series stars Holt McCallany as Harlan Buckley, the patriarch of a prominent North Carolina family that essentially runs the fictional coastal town of Havenport. A couple of heart attacks have forced Buckley to cede control of the clan's various businesses to his wife Belle (Maria Bello) and son Cane (Jake Weary), but they have only succeeded in accruing crushing debt. So, Harlan risks his life to step back in and right the ship, which...

The Waterfront Creator Kevin Williamson Reacts To Netflix Cancellation
Image
The Waterfrontcreator Kevin Williamson responds to the show's surprising cancellation with a heartfelt message. Debuting on Netflix in June, and consisting of 10 episodes, The Waterfront focused on the dysfunctional Buckey family and their fishing empire that almost doubles as a drug-running scheme.

With an impressive Waterfront cast that includes Holt McCallany, Melissa Benoist, Jake Weary, Rafael L. Silva, Humberly González, Danielle Campbell, Brady Hepner, Maria Bello, and Topher Grace, the crime drama seemed to be trending in a positive direction. It made it all the more surprising, this past week, when Netflix cancelled the series.

Posting on his Instagram story, Williamson took a moment to reflect on the fact that...

Netflix Cancels The Waterfront After One Season
Image
Netflix's Ozark replacement show has been canceled after season 1. The crime drama series starring Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, and Julia Garner ran for four seasons from 2017-2022 and is still considered to be one of Netflix's most binge-worthy shows.

Since Ozark ended in 2022, Netflix and fans of the show have been searching for a new original series that could be a worthy successor. While no true replacement emerged in 2023 or 2024, a new show released on the streaming platform in 2025 seemed like it might be the answer, although it has now been brought to a premature end.

‘The Waterfront’ Canceled By Netflix After 1 Season
Image
Exclusive: Netflix will not be proceeding with a second season of Kevin Williamson’s crime drama series The Waterfront, Deadline has learned. According to sources, Williamson has told the cast about the streamer’s decision, and crew members also have been informed that there would be no Season 2, sources said.

The news is somewhat surprising because the twisted tale about North Carolina’s influential Buckley family did solid business, spending five weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10 for English-language series, including a rare three-peat at No.1, peaking at 11.6M views for its first full week of release.

That is above the delivery of another freshman drama series, which was recently renewed by Netflix, Ransom Canyon, which spent four weeks in the Top 10, peaking at No. 2 with 9.4M views for its first full week.

The Waterfront did significantly better than the two other dramas Netflix has canceled so far this year after one season, Pulse and The Residence, which both spent four weeks in the Top 10, peaking at No. 3 with 8.5M views and No. 2 with 8.8M views, respectively.

In their renewal decisions, Netflix executives typically lean into performance vs. cost, with other factors, like awards recognition, social media buzz and the type of audience tuning in, also taken into account. In addition to number views, performance includes completion rate, which is not made public. Sources close to the production told Deadline earlier this month that the rate for The Waterfront was good. I hear that Netflix didn’t feel that the viewership and the completion rate were high enough to secure a renewal.

Like Ransom Canyon, headlined by Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly, The Waterfront, starring Holt McCallany, Jake Weary, Melissa Benoist and Mario Bello, is a character-driven family drama.

Unlike Ransom Canyon, which is a Netflix production — as is Forever — The Waterfront comes from Universal Television. It is unclear whether the streamer’s renewal threshold is higher for outside series; Universal TV scored quick renewals for its two most recent new scripted shows at Netflix, The Man On Inside and Four Seasons.

They are among the string of new Netflix scripted series to get a second season over the past eight months, along with the Warner Bros. TV-produced Untamed and Running Point as well as Dept. Q, Beauty In Black, Ransom Canyon, Forever, North of North, The Vince Staples Show, the animated Devil May Cry and Canadian entries Bet and Geek Girl. Overall, Netflix has renewed almost 20 scripted shows over that period.

The Waterfront‘s first season scored 68% on Rotten Tomatoes. Its premise: For decades, the Buckley family has ruled Havenport, North Carolina, dominating everything from the local fishing industry to the town’s restaurant scene. But their fishing empire has started to crumble as patriarch Harlan Buckley (McCallany) recovers from two heart attacks, and his wife Belle (Bello) and son Cane (Weary) venture into the deep end to keep the family businesses afloat. As their attempts spiral out of control and into treacherous waters, Harlan steps back in to take command. Facing her own demons, Buckley daughter Bree (Benoist) — an addict in recovery who’s lost custody of her son — finds herself entangled in a complicated relationship that could threaten the family’s future forever.

Rafael L. Silva, Humberly González, Danielle Campbell, and Brady Hepner also star in the series, executive produced by Williamson and Ben Fast for Outerbanks Entertainment, Michael Narducci, and Marcos Siega. Topher Grace guest stars.

An Exhaustive Look at an Exhausting Emmys Campaign Weekend
Image
In spite of (or maybe even because of) the tough times Hollywood is battling right now, networks seem to be campaigning harder than ever for their Emmys.

In the period before official voting kicked off, each night brought a different show presenting to Television Academy members at locations that included everywhere from the Los Angeles Lakers training facility to Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter Tour stop at SoFi Stadium and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures several times over. After Emmy nominations? It’s been more of a free-for-all.

The TV Academy’s inaugural Televerse festival, and all the events surrounding it, offered a more centralized proving ground, all of it unfolding the weekend before official voting kicked off. Televerse, in its first year, gave attendees a better idea of what shows will win and, more broadly, where the TV industry itself stands.

Below, IndieWire takes a temperature on the 2025 Emmys race going into voting,...

If You Want a Gender-Balanced Staff, Hire a Woman as Showrunner
Image
Nearly half of the most-popular TV series of the 2024-25 season have met ReFrame’s gender-balanced criteria to achieve the latest ReFrame Stamp.

ReFrame, launched in 2017 by Sundance Institute, Wif (fka Women In Film Los Angeles) and IMDbPro, has awarded its approval to 45 of the top 100 TV series, including Hacks, The Bear and The Pitt (full list below). All told, gender-balanced hiring in TV has rebounded by 6.5 percent from last year’s lull, which had been the worst since the Covid-19 pandemic began.

The takeaway here: If you want a balanced staff, hire a woman as showrunner. Nearly 93 percent of series with women showrunners qualified for the ReFrame Stamp.

Emmys 2025 Poll: Who Should Win for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series?
Image
At first glance, Hacks’ Jean Smart seems destined to take home the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the fourth time in five years.

But upon deeper inspection, one could argue that… actually, nope. Any way you choose to look at this race, it’s Smart’s trophy to lose.

But if we Were to single out a potential spoiler, it’d be Uzo Aduba, because A) Emmy loves her (she’s already got three gold statues), and B) voters may want to stick it to Netflix for cancelling The Residence.

Which leading lady do You...

Uzo Aduba’s Wild Year: Goodbye, ‘The Residence’ Hello, 6th Emmy Nomination
Image
Uzo Aduba is no stranger to the Emmys. She’s already won three of them — two for her breakthrough role as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren in Netflix’s prison dramedy “Orange Is the New Black” and one for her powerful performance as political pioneer Shirley Chisholm in the FX miniseries “Mrs. America.”

Aduba’s latest Emmy nomination, the sixth of her career, is for her work in Netflix’s short-lived White House whodunit “The Residence,” in which she portrays the eccentric, witty and damn good consulting detective Cordelia Cupp, whose keen eye for detail, extreme confidence and unequivocal passion for birding keep her leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else. Cordelia is brought in to solve the murder of White House chief usher A.B. Wynter (Giancarlo Esposito), whose death catapults her into an intricate web of oddball personalities.

But that doesn’t mean Aduba has gotten used to the accolades — far from it,...

Why Paramount+ Canceled Happy Face
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Far from a mark of shame, being canceled after one season puts your show among some surprisingly stellar company. Great sci-fi series have ended after just one season and some of the best TV shows you'll ever see had similarly short runs. In the streaming age such a thing has become even more common, with even shows that seem to perform well being canned prematurely. Just look at Netflix canceling "The Residence," which initially looked as though it could be one of the streamer's newest hits when it topped the Netflix charts back in March 2025. Paramount+ crime drama "Happy Face" however, was sort of somewhere in the middle.

"Happy Face" came from the creators of "Evil" and "The Good Fight," husband and wife duo Robert and Michelle King. The eight-episode scripted series was actually adapted from the true crime podcast "Happy Face" by Melissa Moore,...

‘Severance,’ ‘The Studio’ boost bona fides with key wins at Set Decorators Awards
Image
Is this the start of an Apple TV+ Emmy landslide? The boutique streaming service emerged as the big winner at the 5th Annual Sdsa Awards, held by the Set Decorators Society of America. Apple TV+ took home three awards — the most of any platform — when the winners were unveiled on Monday. And two of those wins were for the streamer's marquee shows Severance and The Studio, which happen to be the most-nominated drama and comedy series, respectively, at this year's Emmys.

The Severance team of set decorator David Schlesinger and production designer Jeremy Hindle were recognized for Best Achievement in Décor/Design of a One-Hour Contemporary Series, beating out its fellow Apple TV+ series Your Friends & Neighbors, as well as Black Mirror, Poker Face, and The White Lotus.

Meanwhile, The Studio notched the win for a half-hour single camera series for its duo of set decorator Claire Kaufman and production designer Julie Berghoff.

¡Malas noticias!

I Made an Emmys Wish List, But Will My Wishes Come True?
Image
Back in early June, a couple of days before Emmy nomination voting began, I wrote a column that included a wish list of what I’d like to see in the nominations. It was a modest list, only four items, built around the idea that what I really wanted was a slate that was a little less predictable than most recent years.

So now that we’re halfway between the announcement of the nominations and the beginning of final voting, it’s time to look back at that list and see how many of my wishes came true.

Spoiler alert: not many.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's Netflix Show Cancelled After Two Seasons
Image
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s stint as a secret agent with family troubles comes to an abrupt end, as Netflix cancels Fubarafter 2 seasons.

It was big news when, back in 2023, legendary film star Schwarzenegger signed on to star in a series for the world’s biggest streamer. Fubar season 1 launched on the strength of Schwarzenegger’s name, and was an immediate hit, garnering 11 million views in its premiere weekend.

It took two years for Fubar season 2 to make its way to Netflix, and perhaps that was too long a gap, as the show premiered to just 2.2 million views, barely cracking the streamer’s top 10.

The show’s disappointing season 2 numbers convinced Netflix that Fubar is indeed Fubar, leading to the show being canceled (via Deadline). The numbers don’t lie: Fubar only made it to #7 on the Netflix top 10 English-language series chart its first full week, and made only one more appearance...

Why Is Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Fubar Canceled? Details Inside
Image
Netflix has officially canceled Fubar after two seasons, marking an abrupt end to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first leading role in a scripted streaming series. The announcement came just hours ago, with its streaming ratings being cited as the reason for its cancellation, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

An action-comedy, the series starred former Mr. Olympia and Oscar nominee Monica Barbaro as a father-daughter spy duo, working for the CIA. Though the first season debuted with strong viewing numbers, the sophomore installment failed to maintain momentum.

The second season featured him taking on an old flame, portrayed by Carrie-Anne Moss, who threatens to destroy his life and the world, face-to-face. Unfortunately, it delivered a performance so underwhelming that even enthusiastic fans weren’t enough to save it.

Netflix cancels the action series fans already gave up on
Image
We have some bad news for fans of the action comedy series Fubar. Unfortunately, after two seasons, Netflix has officially canceled Fubar starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Monica Barbaro.

Deadline broke the news late on Friday, Aug. 1, but fans of Fubar have probably been waiting for this news for months. We were just waiting for Netflix to make this news official, and now, it's here.

Fubar was one of the biggest action comedies when it premiered on Netflix in the spring of 2023. Netflix quickly renewed the series from Nick Santora for a second season before things got rocky. There was a two-year gap between the first two seasons of the series. When Fubar season 2 premiered on Netflix on June 12, 2025, it was a huge flop! It fell out of the Netflix Top 10 after just three weeks, which is basically the kiss of death for any Netflix original series. Netflix really wants their...

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Fubar cancelled by Netflix after two seasons
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carrie-Anne Moss in Fubar (2023)
Deadline reports that Netflix has cancelled Fubar after just two seasons. The action/comedy series starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as Luke Bremmer, a CIA operative on the verge of retirement who discovers a family secret and is forced to go back into the field for one last job. Unfortunately, the cancellation isn’t a big surprise, as the second season came and went with minimal impact, with the show barely occupying the last spot in Netflix’s Top 10 in its first week.

The second season saw Carrie-Anne Moss join the cast as Greta Nelso, a former East German spy who has a passionate history with Schwarzenegger’s character. The show also starred Monica Barbaro as Emma Brunner, Luke’s daughter and a fellow CIA operative. The rest of the cast includes Milan Carter, Fortune Feimster, Travis Van Winkle, Fabiana Udenio, Aparna Brielle, Guy Burnet, Andy Buckley, Jay Baruchel, Barbara Eve Harris,...

Arnold Schwarzenegger's Career-Reviving Series Has Its Fate Decided by Netflix
Image
Netflix has officially pulled the plug onFUBAR, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s spy-action comedy, after two seasons, per Deadline. The cancellation comes just over six weeks after Season 2 launched on June 12 — and despite the show's attempts to go bigger and bolder, the numbers didn’t back it up. He said he’d be back. But it turns out… maybe not.

The second season of Fubar, which added Matrix legend Carrie-Anne Moss to the cast and saw Monica Barbaro return fresh off an Oscar nomination (A Complete Unknown), struggled to attract viewers. In fact, it barely scraped into Netflix’s Top 10 in its opening weekend with 2.2 million views, down drastically from the 11 million Season 1 pulled in during its May 2023 debut — a nearly 80% drop.

Even at its peak, Season 2 only reached #7 on the English-language series chart and quickly dropped out after logging one more appearance at #10 in Week 3. For a show built around the...

‘Fubar’ Canceled By Netflix After 2 Seasons
Image
Exclusive: Netflix is not proceeding with a third season of Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s spy action series Fubar. The decision comes about a month and a half after Season 2 launched on the platform on June 12.

It follows a surprisingly soft return for the series, which, likely fueled by Schwarzenegger’s global star power, had a strong debut in May 2023 and also stars Monica Barbaro who became an Oscar nominee between Seasons 1 and 2 for A Complete Unknown.

With Season 2 released more than two years after Season 1 dropped, Fubar barely made Netflix’s Top 10 for English-language series in its first week, landing in the last spot with 2.2M views from Thursday through Sunday, down from about 11M views for the show’s Season 1 premiere weekend. Season 2 peaked at #7 in its first full week with 3.3M views and logged one more #10 finish in Week 3 with 1.8M views before dropping out of the Top 10.

Jean Smart is poised to tie Helen Hunt’s Emmy streak in Best Comedy Actress
Image
Throughout Emmy history, only Helen Hunt, Candice Bergen, Mary Tyler Moore, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus have won Best Comedy Actress four or more times. This year, Jean Smart is predicted to join their elite ranks.

Smart is so far undefeated for her role as veteran Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance on Hacks, winning in 2021, 2022, and 2024 (the show was on hiatus in 2023). A fourth victory would tie her with Hunt, who went on a four-year winning streak from 1996 to 1999 for playing dedicated wife Jamie Buchman on Mad About You.

Ironically, Smart and Hunt are currently working together on Hacks, where the latter plays network executive Winnie Landell, who oversees Late Night with Deborah Vance. You can't make this stuff up!

Lead and Supporting and Guest Acting Emmy trifecta: Kathy Bates and Uzo Aduba could be next to join exclusive club

Every year, the Television Academy bestows Emmy Awards for lead, supporting, and guest acting performances, depending on screen time and/or eligibility factors like episode count. It's quite rare for someone to win in all three categories throughout their careers — but not impossible.

At the 2025 Emmys, Best Drama Actress nominee Kathy Bates (Matlock) and Best Comedy Actress nominee Uzo Aduba (The Residence) could join the esteemed list that includes some truly iconic television personalities.

Bates, our predictions frontrunner for CBS' reimagined Matlock, previously won in supporting for the limited series American Horror Story: Coven (2014) and in guest for the comedy series Two and a Half Men (2012). Aduba, currently ranked fifth for the recently canceled The Residence, is a double champion in supporting for the limited series Mrs. America (2020) and the drama series Orange Is the New Black (2015), plus she won in guest for the latter when it was classified as...

The 15 Best Crime TV Shows Streaming On Netflix
Image
Given how shows like "The Wire" and "The Sopranos" helped turn HBO into the destination for quality television in the late '90s and early 2000s, it isn't too surprising that Netflix would see a similar rise to prominence off the back of its own well-received crime-influenced series like "House of Cards," "Orange is the New Black," and even "Bloodline." It causes one to wonder what exactly it is about these stories that makes them so central to the midwifing of new eras of television -- perhaps such crime dramas, universally captivating despite often being too violent, disturbing, and complicated for mainstream TV, naturally find themselves at home wherever risks are most welcome.

Whatever the case, Netflix is now where many go for the thrills that a simulated life of crime can offer. Whether a viewer is looking for a classic series that predated the streamer's existence or is willing...

Image
Exclusive: Writer-director Vicky Wight (Happiness for Beginners) has set the cast for her new film, The Body Is Water, a project described as a cross-cultural story about loss, healing, and the strangers who refuse to let you disappear.

The list includes Isiah Whitlock Jr. (The Residence), Saoirse-Monica Jackson (Derry Girls), Academy Award nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (Origin), Academy Award nominee Stephen Rea (The Crying Game), Aidan Quinn (Legends of the Fall), Eva Birthistle (Bad Sisters), Allen Leech (Downton Abbey), Fionnula Flanagan (Waking Ned Devine), Maria Doyle Kennedy (Orphan Black), and Bronagh Gallagher (The End).

7 TV Takeaways From Netflix’s Data Dump: ‘Squid Game’ Keeps Dominating, WWE Partnership Pays Off
Image
You are reading an exclusive WrapPRO article for free. Want to level up your entertainment career? Go here for more information.

Netflix‘s bi-annual engagement report provided the massive viewership figures we expected from juggernauts like “Adolescence” and “Squid Game,” but a closer look at the numbers shows just how powerful the South Korean franchise is for Netflix, as well as how valuable the streamer’s recent partnership with WWE has proven to be.

Beyond laying out the success of “Squid Game” and WWE’s Monday Night Raw, the report, which captures viewership for the first half of 2025, gave insight on massive audience for kids show “Ms. Rachel,” Korean content and true crime series, while the reality TV genre failed to make it to the top of the list.

The report also revealed cumulative viewership for canceled series like “The Residence,” “Pulse” and “The Recruit,” which sometimes performed better than...

Zoë Kravitz and Meghann Fahy are the year’s biggest Emmy surprises: Poll
Image
The 2025 Emmy nominations were filled with some jaw-dropping picks, with several actors and programs beating the Gold Derby's odds.

In our latest snap poll, readers said the bids for Zoë Kravitz and Meghann Fahy caused their jaws to drop the widest. Kravitz was previously snubbed at the Emmys for Big Little Lies, but she received sweet justice this week for portraying herself — at least, a fictionalized version of herself caught in a drug-related mishap — on The Studio. In all, the Apple TV+ show received 23 nominations, more than any other first-year comedy in Emmy history.

As for Fahy, she's a former Emmy nominee for The White Lotus whom awards pundits forecasted would be overlooked this year for the Netflix limited series Sirens. But that wasn't the case. She clearly wowed voters in her role of Devon DeWitt, a woman who tries to protect her younger sister Simone (Milly Alcock) from her...

‘Étoile’ vs. ‘The Residence’: How to cancel a show without derailing its Emmy chances
Image
Talk about an Emmy buzzkill.

When Prime Video officially pulled the plug on Étoile on June 6, the announcement sent ripples through the entertainment industry. While the cancellation of a freshman series is hardly uncommon, it was the timing of the news, not the decision itself, that may have ended the show’s Emmy aspirations.

Just one week before Emmy voting began, Étoile was poised for awards consideration. The ballet dramedy marked the return of Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino. The Palladinos are no strangers to Emmy gold, with 10 wins and 24 nominations between them. While Étoile hadn’t toped the streamers charts, it was quietly building momentum and Amazon originally committed to two seasons. FYC events were scheduled, and cast appearances had been lined up. The campaign machine appeared to be just getting into full swing.

Then came the surprising announcement, right in the middle of FYC season, and any momentum...

We're still waiting for Netflix's hottest new show to be renewed for season 2
Image
Since the hot new crime drama series The Waterfront premiered on Netflix on June 19, the streaming serviced has a released a number of hit series, like Squid Game season 3, The Sandman season 2 volume 1, and the overnight limited series sensation Untamed. But The Waterfront has remained a staple on the Netflix top 10 ever since its drop, even with all these great new releases.

However, in spite of the show's viewership success, we're still waiting for Netflix to reveal whether The Waterfront season 2 has been renewed one month since the show's premiere. It's not out of the ordinary for the streamer to wait a month or more to announce a renewal (or cancellation) of a new series, as Ransom Canyon season 2's announcement arrived about two months after season 1.

The Waterfront season 2 renewal should happen

Still, The Waterfront isn't your run of the mill new Netflix show. While it's not a dominating smash like Stranger Things,...

Image
Netflix has pulled the plug on several popular series in 2025, leaving some viewers disappointed. From gripping mysteries to spy thrillers and even hit sports documentaries, the streamer has pulled the plug on multiple fan-favorite shows. Even critically praised shows weren’t safe if the viewership didn’t hit the mark fast enough. While multiple Netflix shows are gearing up for their season finale in 2025, there are a few shows that are silently getting cancelled by Netflix due to low viewership.

Whether the stories wrapped up clearly or have an open ending, fans are left with lingering questions and an empty watchlist. We’ve broken down how it ended and why Netflix decided to cancel it. Here’s a closer look at the popular Netflix shows cancelled in 2025.

Netflix’s High Threshold: Canceled Series ‘The Residence’, ‘Pulse’ & ‘The Recruit’ All In Top 35 For 2025, Data Reveals
Image
On Netflix, it was a big first half of 2025 for limited series and — outside of phenom Squid Game — Ok six months for ongoing scripted series.

Only two English-language returning scripted series, The Night Agent (S2) and Ginny & Georgia (S3) made it into the Top 10 at #9 and #10, with four limited series ahead of them, Adolescence (#1), Zero Day (#4), Missing You (#5) and Sirens (#8).

Released today, Netflix’s semi-annual viewership report includes data for the three scripted series canceled so far this year, The Residence and Pulse after one season and The Recruit after two. None of them was an outright ratings flop.

Comedic White House murder mystery The Residence, starring Uzo Aduba, fared the best, ranking #23 with 33.3 million views from its March 20 release through June 30. New medical drama Pulse,...

Netflix’s Most Viewed Series for 2025’s First Half Is … Not ‘Squid Game’
Image
Netflix has released its semiannual viewing report for the first half of 2025, with a breakout hit that originated outside the U.S. topping the series rankings.

It’s not Squid Game — at least not according to the way Netflix ranks its programming. Adolescence, the critically acclaimed U.K. limited series that earned 13 Emmy nominations earlier this week, takes the crown with 144.8 million views worldwide since its March 13 premiere.

Squid Game is not far behind, however. Season two of the Korean thriller, released in the last week of 2024, is second among all series with 117.3 million views from January to June. The third and final season is one spot back with 71.5 million views, despite having premiered just four days before the close of the half-year.

Netflix released its six-month data report, which it says covers some 95 billion hours of viewing worldwide (a slight increase from the second half of 2024) in conjunction with...

Image
Back in 2020, Vanessa Kirby (The Fantastic Four: First Steps) teamed up with Netflix to play a character having a really rough night in Pieces of a Woman. The movie is set to premiere on August 15, and today the streamer released a trailer that provides a bigger insight into the acclaimed story. You can check it out in this article.

One of 2025’s Biggest Anime Just Scored an Emmy Nom and No, It’s Not Solo Leveling
Image
Shinichiro Watanabe's latest jazz-themed apocalyptic anime, Lazarus, is thriving in the anime space; it is a reminder of the director's unquestionable success established by the iconic Cowboy Bebop and the zany Space Dandy. Lazarus elevates the ominous tone of the story through on-brand themes that pay tribute to Shinichiro Watanabe's legacy.

Recently, the Television Academy announced Lazarus’s nomination for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music at the 2025 Emmy Awards. This groundbreaking success sets the anime industry on a higher creative pedestal by paying homage to one of anime’s famed directors behind the success of the Adult Swim show.

It would be a huge win for the anime community if Lazarus eventually secures the Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music Emmy Award, despite facing stiff competition from equally resonating title songs.

Lazarus Emmy Nomination Is Amazing, But It Faces Stiff Competition It Would Be a Tough Win for...

‘Awards Magnet’: Our instant 2025 Emmy reactions
Image
The Emmy nominations are in and you'd better believe that the Gold Derby team has thoughts. On the latest Awards Magnet episode, deputy editor Ethan Alter and senior editors Denton Davidson and Marcus James Dixon are hear to sift through the big snubs and surprises that are a part of any Emmys announcement day.

First a topline recap: Severance was the big winner — of the nominations anyway. The Apple TV+ show's sophomore season scored 27 nominations, a near-record eclipsed only by the 32 nominations recieved by Game of Thrones. Speaking of HBO series, The Penguin was the second-most-lauded series with 24 nominations, followed by The Studio at 23. Those are also the most-nominated series in their particular genre: Drama, Limited and Comedy.

Meanwhile, the biggest snub has to be Netflix's Squid Game, which came up empty for its second season after Season 1 became the first Korean-language series nominated for Best Drama Series. The Handmaid's Tale...

Netflix Content Chief Bela Bajaria on Emmys’ ‘Squid Game’ Snub: ‘It’s Surprising It Wouldn’t Be Recognized’
Image
When it comes to the recent 2024-2025 TV season, one series dominated viewership in the United States far and above anything else: Season 2 of Netflix’s “Squid Game.” It wasn’t even close: Include multiplatform viewing for all series — broadcast, cable and streaming — and the show dominated. And yet, “Squid Game” was completely ignored this year by Television Academy voters, and the show didn’t receive a single nomination on Tuesday.

It’s not that “Squid Game” isn’t an Emmy show. In Season 1, the Korean-based series received 14 nominations and won six — including outstanding drama directing (for Hwang Dong-hyuk) and lead drama actor (Lee Jung-jae). So how could it be completely blanked in Season 2? Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria was wondering the same thing.

“‘Squid Game’ had an incredible cultural impact. Biggest show in the world,” she told Variety. “That first season really made Emmy history, and people loved this last season too.

Emmy On-Screen Diversity Takes A Hit With Acting & Hosting Nominations Down 18% From 2024
Image
Twenty-eight actors and reality hosts from diverse backgrounds were recognized by the Television Academy with Emmy nominations on Tuesday, not only an 18% drop from last year’s 34 but a near-low since 2019, when there were 26 non-Caucasian actors and hosts.

At its highest, the most diverse year for actors and reality competition/talk show hosts was 2021 per Deadline stats with a massive 49 nominees.

While there were only two categories last year devoid of nominees from diverse backgrounds, this year there were three.

Bela Bajaria on Which Emmy Nominee She Texted First and One Giant “Disappointment” of a Snub
Image
While still in the construction phase, the new Netflix campus in New Jersey might want to dedicate a bit more square footage to its trophy case.

On Tuesday morning, Netflix received 120 nominations for the 2025 Emmy Awards. That’s a ton, only outdone by the combination of HBO and Max (now HBO Max, again) — so first place may be a bit up for debate. This is all temporary anyway: Bela Bajaria vs. Casey Bloys (and maybe Matt Cherniss) won’t really be decided until Sept. 14.

The Hollywood Reporter caught up with the Bajaria a few hours after the Emmy nominees came out. She’s a busy woman, and 44 nominated shows make for a hell of a lot of text chains; read on to find out which Netflix nominee Bajaria messaged first, what show was her snubbiest snub, and if four nods for The Residence is making her second guess the decision...
