Expected Titles at the 2025 Venice Film Festival
Image
‘After the Hunt’ Luca Guadagnino’s follow up to ‘Queer’ and ‘Challengers’ dives into the life of a college professor dealing with “cancel culture”, her secretive past, and a serious accusation against her colleague. With a cast led by Julia Roberts (in just her third film of the decade), Andrew Garfield, Ayo Edebiri, and Michael Stuhlbarg, ‘After the Hunt’ is one of the most anticipated films expected to premiere at Venice. If this exceeds (or even meets) expectations, award season can’t come soon enough, especially when you have Roberts and Garfield at the front and center of the campaign. Vicky Krieps Says Jim Jarmusch Isn’t Looking to Make Only Prestige Films: He’s ‘Not Trying to Go to Cannes’
Image
Jim Jarmusch just wants to make films for the sake of cinema. Jarmusch’s latest collaborator, actress Vicky Krieps, couldn’t help but applaud the indie filmmaker’s nonconformist vision during the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Krieps will next star in Jarmusch’s ensemble “Father, Mother, Sister, Brother” alongside Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Tom Waits, and Charlotte Rampling.

“What I really, really love about [Jarmusch] is that he is still just making a movie. He’s not trying to make the next Jim Jarmusch. He’s not trying to go to Cannes,” Krieps said, as reported by THR. “He’s really trying to figure out how to make the movie on set, like a student would make a movie. And that is very, very beautiful.”

Jarmusch certainly has had his fair share of experiences at Cannes, winning the Camera d’Or for his first feature “Stranger Than Paradise...

This Star Trek guest star got carted off his concert stage... in a coffin
Image
It’s not every day that you see a Star Trek guest star carried off a stage in a coffin during a concert, but it’s happening. Oh, it’s happening. Iggy Pop, he of the long, scraggly hair, raspy voice, and tendency to perform his brand of punk rock shirtless, is 78 years young and in the midst of what he’s called his farewell tour. During a performance at the O2 Victoria Warehouse in Manchester, England, on May 31, he concluded his night in macabre style: stepping into a coffin and being wheeled off the stage.

Before we get into his Star Trek adventure, here’s a bit of quick background about Pop. He was born James Newell Osterberg Jr. and set about seeking a career in music. He launched Iggy and the Stooges and gained fame, both with the Stooges and solo, for putting on wild shows that, in the eyes of some,...

A Look At Selena Gomez’s Best Movies & TV Shows (Photo Credit – Hotstar)

Selena Gomez is currently filming the latest season of Only Murders In The Building, but her journey as an actress started years ago with Barney & Friends. Although she gained massive popularity after featuring in the Disney Channel TV show Wizards of Waverly Place and numerous other Disney projects, she simultaneously excelled in the music industry, produced her music albums, and even established a business empire by launching a brand named Rare Beauty.

Irrespective of the venture, Selena has only received love and support from her fans. Selena Gomez’s films and TV shows have also earned immense recognition over the years. As we wait for the latest season of Only Murders In The Building to release, let’s look at some of the best of her works.

Jim Jarmusch’s ‘Father Mother Sister Brother’ Will Premiere at Venice, Mubi Chief Says
Image
We were disappointed when the Cannes lineup came out and Jim Jarmusch’s next film was not on it. But it seems like we just had to wait a little longer.

Efe Cakarel, the CEO of Mubi, which is distributing Jarmusch’s next movie, told a crowd at SXSW London that Jarmusch’s “Father Mother Sister Brother” will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in the main competition.

“That’s already confirmed,” he said during a keynote speech at the festival on Friday (via Variety). He also added one other movie joining the lineup that Mubi will be releasing, Paolo Sorrentino’s next movie “La Grazia” starring Toni Servillo.

Venice won’t announce its lineup for some time, but it’s an exciting get for the festival and could be the first of several high profile contenders on the Biennale. Benny Safdie’s “The Smashing Machine” from A24 has been rumored,...

Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother Secures Venice Competition Slot
Jim Jarmusch
Jim Jarmusch’s long-awaited feature “Father Mother Sister Brother” is set to debut in the main competition of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, running 27 August–6 September 2025 on the Lido.

The anthology follows three interconnected family stories across the United States, Ireland and France, and marks Jarmusch’s first narrative feature since The Dead Don’t Die in 2019. Its ensemble includes Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Adam Driver, Tom Waits, Charlotte Rampling, Mayim Bialik, Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat. Principal photography wrapped quietly in Ireland and France last June.

The road to Venice has been unusually circuitous. Early trade chatter tipped the film for Cannes, yet it was absent from Thierry Frémaux’s April line-up announcement, prompting speculation about a late switch to the autumn circuit. World of Reel later reported that the project “skipped Cannes” and became a leading contender for Venice after the festival’s selection committee passed on it.

When you purchase through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Zombies have been a thing in cinema for nearly a century now, and since then, we have seen countless films that employ the flesh-eating monsters to tell various kinds of stories. In this sub-genre, we have seen many high and low budget films from the incredibly popular World War Z to the brilliant 28 Days Later, and while these films are every bit worthy of the praise they get, there are some films that get nearly no praise, as the masses still haven’t heard about them. To rectify that, we have compiled a list of the best and most entertaining zombie films that you might not have heard of.

‘Leave One Day’ Review: Cannes Opener Is a Slight but Winning Musical That Croons French Nostalgia
Image
Chalk it up to Cannes’ unique position that you’re reading this review.

Which isn’t to say that Amélie Bonnin’s locally flavored jukebox musical “Leave One Day” is anything close to a wash — nor does this year’s Cannes opening film dishonor the (at best) checkered legacy of recent predecessors such as Michel Hazanavicius’ “Final Cut,” Quentin Dupieux’s “The Second Act,” and the botched Johnny Depp comeback “Jeanne du Barry.” Hell, by way of pleasure and ambition, this slight-but-winsome dramedy offers a step-up from recent vintages; by way of international resonance, however, this latest opener seems unlikely for a world tour.

Taking a sturdy, mainstream premise — a big-city careerist reflecting on her life path during a trip back to the holler, in a setup that faintly echoes “Sweet Home Alabama,” among a hundred other rom-coms — and shading it with moral grays, natural light, and a more unvarnished turn from a well-known star,...

Cannes 2025 Snubs and Surprises: Where’s Lynne Ramsay? Where’s Park Chan-wook?
Image
Updated, 8:11 a.m.: Spike Lee has shared on Instagram that his latest film, “Highest 2 Lowest,” will premiere out of competition in Cannes, though the film was not included in the festival’s Thursday lineup announcement. IndieWire understands the festival was waiting to confirm Denzel Washington’s attendance, and indeed the star will be at Cannes.

Earlier: Predicting the Cannes Film Festival lineup is always a tricky feat. Some films you’d expect to see on the Croisette — and we expected many that didn’t make the cut Thursday morning — either aren’t ready or decided to go the way of the fall festivals.

Or worse, Thierry Frémaux and his team just didn’t go for them. The festival programmers looked at a record 2,909 feature submissions this year, spreading out selections across the main competition, Un Certain Regard, and the non-competitive sections. More official selection films will be announced,...

Streaming Ratings: ‘The Traitors’ Scores Series High With Season 3 Premiere
Image
The Traitors is becoming more than just a cult favorite.

The competition series opened its third season with its largest viewing numbers to date: It registered 499 million minutes of viewing on Peacock for the week of Jan. 6-12, based on preliminary Nielsen streaming figures. Season three premiered on Jan. 9. (Nielsen’s streaming figures include all episodes of a show, so some of that time came from prior seasons.)

That’s a series high for The Traitors, whose previous best showing in Nielsen’s streaming ratings was 402 million minutes the week after its season two premiere in January 2024. It’s also the best premiere week for any Peacock unscripted series to date and was the top unscripted show in the United States last week across all platforms.

Full streaming ratings for Jan. 6-12 from Nielsen will be released in a few weeks, per the ratings service’s agreement with streaming platforms.

Every Cameo In The Dead Don't Die
Image
The Dead Don't Die is independent director Jim Jarmusch's absurdist take on a horror comedy that centers on the reactions of people in a small town when they find themselves in the middle of a zombie apocalypse caused by polar fracking. The movie is led by Adam Driver and Bill Murray, but the supporting cast includes Tilda Swinton, Chloë Sevigny, Steve Buscemi, Danny Glover, Selena Gomez, and more, giving the movie a very impressive wealth of talent. While many main characters in The Dead Don't Die ultimately end up dying, their adventures along the way are pretty unusual and funny.

While the film received mixed reviews upon its initial release, when the movie was added to Netflix in December 2024, The Dead Don't Die quickly found streaming success. Its renewed popularity is no surprise given the deadpan humor, fourth wall breaks, and unexpected ending twist in The Dead Don't Die...

Bret Easton Ellis Doesn’t Believe Austin Butler Is Really Starring in ‘American Psycho’
Image
So here’s a weird one. It was reported back in December that Austin Butler would be playing the role of Patrick Bateman in a new movie adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis novel American Psycho for director Luca Guadagnino, but those reports are now being disputed by none other than Bret Easton Ellis himself.

On a recent episode of The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, the writer of the original American Psycho suggested that Austin Butler hasn’t actually signed on to play Patrick Bateman in the new American Psycho movie. In his own words, he suggests the report is “fake news.”

“I have a feeling it’s fake news,” Easton Ellis mused. “I heard somewhere, from someone, that there are no contracts. Austin Butler hasn’t signed anything to play Patrick Bateman. Luca doesn’t have a deal. Scott Burns, who is supposed to write the screenplay, doesn’t have a deal either.

From F1 to Mickey 17: the 2025 films Guardian writers are most excited about
Paul Thomas Anderson
New films from Paul Thomas Anderson and Kelly Reichardt with stars including George Clooney, Michaela Coel and Cate Blanchett will premiere this year

Jim Jarmusch prefers to work at an unhurried pace, but perhaps it’s no coincidence that his longest inter-picture hiatus has followed the most tepidly reviewed release of his career. Soon, it will have been six years since his low-key zombie comedy The Dead Don’t Die was met with a resounding shrug at Cannes, and it would seem that the coolest cucumber in American independent cinema will respond by paring down to basics. No more fun and games with genre, just a “very subtle”, “very quiet”, “funny”, and “sad” family affair gathering Cate Blanchett, Charlotte Rampling, Adam Driver, Tom Waits and a pink-haired Vicky Krieps around the dinner table. But if it’s going to be anything like his last film dealing with parents and children – the hangdog,...

10 Best Movies Like The Dead Don't Die
Image
From other zombie comedies like Shaun of the Dead to other Jim Jarmusch-directed absurdist horror films like Only Lovers Left Alive, there are a ton of great movies like The Dead Don’t Die to check out. Now streaming on Netflix, The Dead Don’t Die tackles the familiar setup of a small-town zombie invasion in a completely unfamiliar way. As usual, the local cops are tasked with fending off the undead, but this movie has cops that know they’re in a movie, a zombie-slaying samurai played by Tilda Swinton, and a hefty dose of Jarmusch’s signature deadpan humor.

There’s no other movie quite like The Dead Don’t Die — it’s a very unique cinematic experiment — but there are movies with similar tones and styles. There are other movies that take a quirky comedic approach to a zombie apocalypse, like Life After Beth. There are other horror films with a refreshingly offbeat voice,...

How The Zombie Apocalypse Started In The Dead Don't Die
Image
The horror comedy, The Dead Don't Die, features a zombie apocalypse that has an unusual cause. Directed by Jim Jarmusch, The Dead Don't Die sees the small town of Centerville being invaded by a horde of the undead. With a star-studded cast led by Bill Murray and Adam Driver, The Dead Don't Die is more than just a typical zombie movie. Instead, it differentiates itself by including comedic elements and social commentary while still featuring the gore and violence associated with the horror genre.

The Dead Don’t Die premiered to mixed reviews with criticisms about the pacing of the movie, especially because it had the potential to be great. Despite the criticisms, Adam Driver’s zombie movie has seen a resurgence on streaming five years after it was released. Distinct from most zombie films, The Dead Don't Die sets a different tone, as it leans more towards the comedic side.

Adam Driver’s Sci-Fi Thriller Getting New Streaming Home Nearly 2 Years After $60M Disappointment
Image
As much as Adam Driver's career has reached some impressive highs, it has been met with some notable lows. On the one hand, Driver has been a part of some major moneymakers over the past decade. All three of his Star Wars movies made over $1 billion, with Star Wars: The Force Awakens making just shy of $2.1 billion. On the other hand, however, Driver has played roles in films that have lost boatloads of money. Most infamously, he played the lead in Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis, which made a mere $13.8 million on an $120 million budget.

The same disparity applies to the critical reception of Driver's films as well. The actor has been a part of indie darlings like Frances Ha and Inside Llewyn Davis that have earned Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes scores of over 90%. His work has been praised in similarly high-scoring movies like Paterson and Marriage Story. On the other hand,...

‘The Dead Don’t Die’ Ending, Explained
Image
The Dead Don’t Die is a 2019 horror comedy about zombies, a previously established niche subgenre that also includes beloved cult classics Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland. The movie was directed by Jim Jarmusch, whose name may be recognizable to fans of vampire media as the director of Only Lovers Left Alive. The movie also had a lot of star power behind it, including Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton, Danny Glover, and Selena Gomez, just to name a few.

Despite the talented director behind the camera and an esteemed cast in front of it, The Dead Don’t Die received middling reviews and has mostly been forgotten in the five years since its release. With 54% on RottenTomatoes and 53% on Metacritic, it’s easy to see why audiences, whether deserved or not, have allowed the film to join the ranks of underrated horror comedies.

Everyone Who Dies In The Dead Don't Die
Image
The Dead Don't Die includes many characters who die after the small sleepy town of Centerville is invaded by zombies. The cast of The Dead Don't Die comprises an ensemble of renowned actors such as Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Danny Glover, and Adam Driver, who bring director Jim Jarmusch's story to life. At its core, The Dead Don't Die is an enjoyable zombie movie. However, the elements of comedy in the film make it a parody of the genre.

Released in 2019, Adam Driver's zombie film has recently seen a resurgence after being added to Netflix. The Dead Don't Die was launched to the top of Netflix's rankings once it was readily available to widespread audiences. Despite The Dead Don't Die being a comedy, it still features the violence and gore that is often seen in zombie movies, making for an entertaining and dark combination of genres.

Adam Driver's Mixed-Reviewed $15M Zombie Movies Surges On Netflix's US Top 10 Charts 5 Years Later
Image
Adam Driver's career has starkly divided both critics and audiences. The actor's strong points have been quite so, with films such as BlacKkKlansman and Paterson scoring a universally positive 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. Driver's career has also included several other movies with Rotten Tomatoes scores in the 90s, including early indie hits such as Frances Ha and Inside Llewyn Davis as well as mainstream favorites like Star Wars: The Force Awakens. On the other hand, the actor's lows have gone pretty low, including his 36% Tomatometer for 65 and 44% for This is Where I Leave You.

What is odd about Driver is that even his better-rated movies have been the subject of mockery and memes. This most notably includes Marriage Story, which, despite earning Driver an Oscar nomination and strong critical reviews, has been the subject of ridicule in the years since its release. This year, Driver was in the mixed-reviewed Megalopolis,...

A billion-dollar Margot Robbie movie has found additional success on streaming. Robbie is an Australian actor who had her international breakthrough when she played a supporting role opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese's 2013 movie The Wolf of Wall Street. Since then, she has been nominated for three Oscars, one as a producer, and two as an actor for her performances in 2017's I, Tonya and 2019's Bombshell.

In addition to earning critical accolades, many Margot Robbie movies have become blockbuster hits. $261M Terminator Disappointment Finds Redemption In Netflix's Global Chart 5 Years Later

One of the Terminator franchise's biggest commercial disappointments has found streaming success on Netflix. Since the first movie was released in 1984, there have been six Terminator movies and two television series in the long-running franchise. The franchise's first movie, directed and written by James Cameron, set the tone and established Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, along with presenting the now iconic characters of Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese.

The first sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, is widely considered to be the franchise's best movie, along with being one of the best all-time movie sequels. None of the ensuing movies, released from 2003-2019, were able to reach the same level of acclaim as the original two installments. After gaining recognition for his comedic performance in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice in 1988, Keaton rose to greater fame for his portrayal of the iconic superhero in Burton's Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992). In the following years, Keaton starred in various comedies and dramas, such as Clean and Sober, Much Ado About Nothing, The Paper, Multiplicity, Jack Frost, Herbie: Fully Loaded, and The Other Guys.

Keaton's career saw a resurgence in 2014 after starring in Birdman, playing a washed-up actor seeking a comeback and earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Since then, he's starred in several dramas, such as the Best Picture winner Spotlight, while also returning to his iconic roles as Batman in 2023's The Flash and in 2024's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. In recent years, Keaton has also...

‘Carry-On’ Closes In On Netflix All-Time Top 10 As ‘Virgin River’s Return Takes Top Weekly TV Spot
Image
Carry-On, a film about traveling through the airport at Christmas, is on course to break into Netflix’s top ten films of all time.

The thriller, which stars Taron Egerton, Jason Bateman, and Sofia Carson, bested its performance last week by adding another 55M views on top of last week’s 42M number. It remains number one on Netflix’s weekly film charts, having already become Netflix’s biggest launch of a film this year.

Given that it has scored 97M views in its first ten days, Carry-On, which was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and produced by Amblin Partners, it could well enter Netflix’s top ten films of all time. For reference, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery wrapped up 136.3M views in its first month to take the ten spot, Jennifer Lopez’s The Mother is number nine with 136.4M views, We Can Be Heroes got 137.3M for...

The 5 Best New Movies on Netflix in December 2024
Image
Need something new to watch on Netflix? With the holidays upon us, no doubt folks are about to do some much deserved clocking out of work and settling in for streaming hours. Netflix has a surprisingly short supply of new movies this month, with less than 10 archival films announced to arrive on the first (when the bulk of new titles are usually added) and a slighter-than-usual handful of originals too. Not to worry, we were still able to handpick five must-watch titles among the bunch, so here’s this month’s curated list of the best new movies on Netflix right now.

Netflix ‘That Christmas’

Co-written and produced by “Love Actually” filmmaker Richard Curtis and based on Curtis’ trilogy of popular children’s books, the animated holiday film “That Christmas” stages a series of intertwined Christmas tales in a fashion that will be familiar to any “Love Actually” fan. Featuring...

Adam Driver’s $15 Million Zombie Comedy Finds Streaming Success Despite a 54% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Adam Driver will forever be remembered for his performance as Kylo Ren in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, but during the same year that he made his final appearance as the Dark Side-wielder, he also appeared in a critically panned zombie horror film that’s become a streaming hit. Driver stars alongside Bill Murray in The Dead Don’t Die, the 2019 horror comedy that’s made an impressive run on the Netflix charts, currently sitting in the #5 spot at the time of writing. The film is set in the small town of Centerville where the dead don’t stay dead for long. The Dead Don’t Die also stars Tilda Swinton and earned a 54% score from critics and a 38% rating from general audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.

‘Carry-On’ Continues Its Netflix Lead, and Christmas Bargain Hunting Dominates VOD
Image
Christmas bargain shopping usually doesn’t start until December 26. But this week’s Video on Demand top 10 lists suggest the sales started early. And once again this year, Ron Howard’s “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (Universal) leads the way.

Overall, nine different holiday-related movies charted either at iTunes or Fandango (as VOD) or among the current top 10 movies streaming on Netflix. For the latter, that includes their original thriller “Carry-On,” with the Christmas Eve-set movie starring Tagon Egerton and Jason Bateman #1 for the second straight week.

It’s an odd year for VOD, with fewer than usual top recent films getting a pre-holiday release with potential digital gift ability. None of November’s four biggest hits, “Gladiator II” will go digital after its fifth weekend in theaters. It is likely to lead VOD activity both because of its strengths and the lack of competition during this period.

Netflix Is Breathing New Life Into A Forgotten Adam Driver & Bill Murray Zombie Movie
Image
The world is full of underrated zombie movies that you really need to see, and when one of them was made by Jim Jarmusch and features a laundry list of Hollywood's finest actors, there's no shame in being doubly intrigued. The movie in question is none other than the 2019 horror comedy "The Dead Don't Die," which is currently seeing plenty of success on Netflix. In fact, the decidedly un-seasonal film is sitting at a very respectable third position on the streaming platform's Top 10 daily most viewed movies as of December 22, 2024 (per FlixPatrol).

In many ways, "The Dead Don't Die" is a perfect movie for the streaming age. A decidedly off-kilter film with a slow pacing and thematic choices that made it difficult for audiences and critics to swallow (as evidenced by its 54 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes), it failed to set the box office ablaze during its original theatrical run.

Adam Driver’s Wild Zombie Movie Finding New Life On Streaming 5 Years After 54% Rt Disappointment
Image
Adam Driver, whose early work included Francis Ha and Inside Llewyn Davis, along with the HBO comedy series Girls, has an ongoing and expansive film slate. From acclaimed dramas, with varying budgets, to blockbuster franchises, his acting career enchants audiences and renowned Hollywood talent alike. Over the years, Driver has appeared in movies helmed by Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott. He also received consecutive Academy Award nominations in 2018 and 2019 for his performances in BlacKkKlansman and Marriage Story, directed by Spike Lee and Noah Baumbach, respectively.

Despite having starred in prominent award contenders, Driver is no stranger to genre movies. His most famous, and potentially debatable, role to date is Kylo Ren from Star Wars, a former antagonist who died in the 2019 sequel, The Rise of Skywalker. He also appeared in Midnight Special and 65, portraying an astronaut who inadvertently crash lands on what is revealed to be a prehistoric Earth.

Why Everyone Is So Obsessed With Sturgill Simpson's "The Dead Don't Die" Song In The 2019 Zombie Movie
Image
Jim Jarmusch's 2019 horror comedy The Dead Don't Die is now streaming on Netflix, but what is going on with the Sturgill Simpson song in the movie? The Dead Don't Die stars Adam Driver among its incredibly star-studded cast, which also includes the likes of Selena Gomez, Bill Murray, Austin Butler, and Tilda Swinton, among others. Although The Dead Don't Die is technically a zombie movie and follows some familiar beats, it also breaks with that genre in myriad ways because, at its core, The Dead Don't Die is really a parody of zombie movies.

The Dead Don't Die also provides considerable social commentary—after all, in this movie, the zombies are created due to fracking—which is at times heavy-handed, although it is intentionally so. Overall, these elements of The Dead Don't Die give the movie a bit of a bizarre tone, which has likely contributed to its mixed reception.

Austin Butler's Last $15M Horror Movie Is Trending On Netflix & It Was Followed By One Of The Most Impressive Career Turns Of The 21st Century
Image
Austin Butler starred in The Dead Don't Die five years ago, and his status in Hollywood has never been the same. The actor made his debut in Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide in 2005 when he was 14 years old. He continued landing small TV roles for a while. Butler eventually gained more recognition in the 2010s for his roles as Sebastian Kydd in The Carrie Diaries on The CW and Wil Ohmsford in MTV's The Shannara Chronicles. However, Butler's acting career truly took off after appearing in The Dead Don't Die in the late 2010s.

Austin Butler is set to star in two upcoming films — Ari Aster's Eddington (a contemporary Western black comedy) and Darren Aronofsky's Caught Stealing (a crime thriller based on Charlie Huston's 2004 book of the same name). As of the writing of this article, neither have release dates.

Now, Butler is a widely known actor,...

Bill Murray’s Divisive Zombie Movie That Rivaled His Own 15-Year-Old Horror Franchise Sequel Is Now Trending On Netflix
Image
The 2019 zombie movie, The Dead Don't Die, starring Bill Murray, is now trending on Netflix. The Dead Don't Die's star-studded cast, includes Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton, Chloë Sevigny, Selena Gomez, and more, who appear alongside Murray in the horror comedy. The film primarily focuses on a small town that begins to experience unusual deaths and eventually realizes that zombies have invaded their town, forcing them to fight for their lives and leading to The Dead Don't Die's unexpected ending.

Director Jim Jarmusch's zombie movie works so well largely because of its dry humor and its actors' abilities to pull that style off. Unsurprisingly, Bill Murray is great in The Dead Don't Die, and his deadpan reactions contrast perfectly with the absurd events that unfold onscreen. Surprisingly, The Dead Don't Die was not Bill Murray's only zombie movie released in 2019, as he also made a cameo appearance in...

Carol Kane’s Last Oscar Nomination Came in 1976 — ‘Between the Temples’ Could Change That
Image
There is something foundational about Carol Kane. She was part of the fabric of late 20th Century arts and entertainment, whether it be in films like “Dog Day Afternoon” and “The Princess Bride” or on television in her Emmy-winning performance on “Taxi” as wife to Andy Kaufman’s Latke. In transitioning into the 21st century, not only did her strengths become more amplified — her trademark quirkiness adding dynamism to movies such as “The Pacifier” and shows like “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” — but her range continues to become more pronounced. In the last decade alone she’s taken part in a western from Jacques Audiard (“The Sisters Brothers”), a zombie comedy from Jim Jarmusch (“The Dead Don’t Die”), and will soon be seen in Darren Aronofsky’s ’90s-set crime thriller “Caught Stealing” as a character she recently told IndieWire “only spoke Yiddish.”

The role garnering her the most attention nowadays, however,...

Adam Driver's Bizarre Zombie Movie From 2019 Is Now On Netflix, And You'll Never Believe Who Make Up The Supporting Cast
Image
Adam Driver has been in a variety of movies and TV shows, and one of his most bizarre ones is now streaming on Netflix – and it’s even more intriguing thanks to its unbelievable supporting cast. Adam Driver has become one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation, and he has shown his range across different genres on both film and TV. Driver’s acting career began on TV before his big screen debut in 2011’s J. Edgar, where he played Walter Lyle. Driver’s big break was when he was cast as Adam Sackler in the comedy-drama TV series Girls.

Driver gained worldwide recognition when he joined Disney’s Star Wars sequels as Kylo Ren, but in between Star Wars movies, he continued to expand to other genres. After movies like Silence, Logan Lucky, and BlacKkKlansman, Driver joined the cast of the absurdist zombie comedy The Dead Don’t Die.

The Highest-Grossing Movie From 2023 Is Finally Available On Netflix
Image
The 2023 smash-hit, award-winning movie Barbie is now streaming on Netflix, and it's the perfect time to revisit what made the movie such a triumph. To say Barbie was a box office success would be a massive understatement. In fact, Barbie was the highest-grossing movie in 2023, a year that had a number of major releases, and it has become such a phenomenon that there are now many movies trying to be the "new Barbie" in the coming years.

Barbie's cast of characters starred Margot Robbie as Stereotypical Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, alongside a star-studded cast comprising other Barbies, Kens, and humans. Although there were plenty of brilliant songs in Barbie and the movie was comedic, Barbie also had profound messages about womanhood, friendship, and self-assuredness that contributed to the movie's appeal. Now, Barbie can finally be streamed on Netflix, reminding audiences why it gained the popularity it did.

Where Was The Dead Don't Die Filmed? Impressive Locations Revealed
Image
Netflix's The Dead Don't Die recently caused a renewed interest in what real-world locations the movie used for filming.

The 2019 film, featuring a star-studded cast headlined by Bill Murray (who has since appeared in other genre films like Ant-Man 3), Adam Driver, and Selena Gomez, did not light the world on fire upon its debut; however, in the time since, it has cemented itself as a cult hit among fans.

The horror movie side-steps the typical zombie tropes, offering an absurdist comedy take on the genre. It tells the tale of two police officers in a sleepy New York town who are witness to the dead rising and all the bloody horror that comes with such a calamity.

The Dead Don't Die Ending Explained
Image
The Dead Don't Die is a zombie movie with a subtle, philosophical perspective that's fascinating to examine. Directed by iconic indie director Jim Jarmusch, the comedy touches upon timely social issues by exploring small-town drama during a zombie apocalypse, as police officers Cliff Robertson (Bill Murray) and Ronnie Peterson (Adam Driver) investigate the murder of two people at a Centerville diner. The initial diner murders are committed by two zombies - undead characters who are less interested in flesh and more interested in coffee, demonstrating that it's not the typical zombie film.

The Dead Don’t Die overtly foreshadows the impending apocalypse. From act to act, Driver’s Ronnie Peterson emphatically states that “it’s all going to end badly.” Murray’s Robertson tries to figure out why the end is coming, even though the writing is figuratively on the wall. Ultimately, they’re consumed by concepts that they can’t fully understand,...

Bill Murray and Adam Driver's Zombie Comedy ‘The Dead Don't Die’ is Streaming on Netflix
Image
Bill Murray may be best known for his larger-than-life comedy performances in movies such as Groundhog Day and Caddyshack, as well as the droll and sarcastic Peter Venkman in the Ghostbusters franchise. However, in 2019, he starred in his second zombie comedy (after his brilliant cameo in Woody Harrelson’s Zombieland franchise) with Jim Jarmusch’s The Dead Don’t Die. Now the financial and critical disappointment is shuffling its way onto Netflix on December 16.

While a quirky and completely deadpan approach to the zombie genre, which seemed to have a lot of promise from its premise and leading cast, which also includes Adam Driver, the blend of horror, comedy and a lot of social commentary ended up being even more lifeless than the undead creatures it features. Jarmusch’s deep dive into environmental issues in the guise of a slow-moving dark comedy really failed to connect with either audiences or critics,...

Selena Gomez Says Independent Films Are ‘Truly the Historical Record of Our Times’
Image
Despite being one of the biggest pop stars in the world, Selena Gomez has said she’s always had a connection with independent film, and that her new film “Emilia Perez” is “just the beginning of what I feel I can do.” Speaking at the IndieWire Honors ceremony in Hollywood on Thursday, December 5, Gomez thanked some of the indie auteurs who have helped shape her career as an actress.

Gomez said she’s been drawn to independent film and said that they’re movies that “left me feeling unsettled, sometimes in the best way.”

“Supporting independent filmmakers is extremely important, not only because it’s vital to the future of storytelling, but I believe these films are truly the historical records of the times,” Gomez told the crowd. “Where we are with politics, pop culture, and humanity, I am proud to stand alongside so many talented people who continue to...

10 Great Zombie Movies That Are Unfairly Overlooked
Image
Zombie movies, or films featuring some version of the walking undead, have been a staple of the horror genre since its inception, resulting in terrifying films with a chilling, underlying tension. The best zombie films pack intense stories and graphic action into the run-time, producing some of the most memorable, visceral moments in all cinema. With such a popular premise, it's easy for big-budget productions to garner all the commercial and critical success, leaving some equally intense and brilliant films to be unfairly overshadowed.

With groundbreaking shows like The Walking Dead — one of the most popular TV shows of all time — demonstrating a public thirst for zombie action, it should be no surprise that new and old zombie productions have started gaining more attention. Stellar works like Pontypool and Juan of the Dead are perfect examples of films that take the best elements of a trope, elevating some and subverting...

Adam Driver & Bill Murray's Forgotten Zombie Movie Is Coming To Netflix Next Month
Image
Zombies have had a diverse array of representation across the history of movies and television. Their portrayal can sink into the terrifying such as in the movies World War Z or Train to Busan. Zombies have also been popularized recently by the long-running series The Walking Dead, which has also had multiple spinoff. Though deemed "the Infected," HBO's acclaimed series The Last of Us portrayed zombies in a pandemic-esque format, warning of a biohazardous disease that affects those bitten by infected humans.

In stark contrast to these portrayals, a number of films feature much more comedic takes on zombies. This includes the hyper-violent yet darkly comedic Edgar Wright movie Shaun of the Dead as well as movies like Zombieland or Warm Bodies. Even the vampire television comedy series What We Do in the Shadows has had its own humorous take on zombies, including them among the supernatural beings in the series.
