For a long time, Crunchyroll has been a dominant force in the anime streaming scene. In an era where every broadcaster and media outlet has fought for a share of the streaming market, Crunchyroll has found a niche audience and catered to it for many years. However, despite having an extensive library of anime content, it was recently reported that anime fans have discovered a new platform for consuming their content.
According to a new study by Dentsu, it revealed that 48% of viewers globally go to Netflix to watch anime. This statistic makes sense since not every region can access Crunchyroll, like some parts of Asia, so they would rely on Netflix to watch titles like Spy x Family. And those that do, not everything will be available in that region's library. However, when focusing on the U.S. market, Crunchyroll ranks last at 23%. When it comes to a slice-of-life story, there's a certain vibe that few other stories are able to reproduce. To do that, you need to be a talented filmmaker like Japanese director Makoto Shinkai. In 2007, Shinkai released 5 Centimeters Per Second, an anime movie that was his feature film solo directing debut. Eighteen years later, the movie is getting a live-action adaptation, and Japanese distributor Toho revealed a first look this week.
The adaptation was first announced back in 2024, but only now are fans getting to see how it will look in a real-world setting. The image reveals SixTONES idol Hokuto Matsumura front and center as leading character Tono Takaki, and he's standing in front of the movie's iconic cherry blossom tree — which is a significant part of the story. In the animated movie, 5 Centimeters Per Second is the rhythm that cherry blossom petals take to fall from the...

Anime adaptations have had a rocky road in live-action format, but 2024 may finally change that narrative with Netflix’s upcoming release of Cells at Work! Set to premiere on June 13, this Japanese live-action film takes the beloved anime's imaginative look at the human body and reimagines it with dazzling visuals and heartfelt storytelling. With a mix of science fiction, action, and family drama, this adaptation is already generating buzz as the most promising anime-inspired film of the year.
Directed by Hideki Takeuchi (known for Thermae Romae and Nodame Cantabile), the movie offers a refreshing take on the microscopic world inside humans, according to @NetflixAnime on X. Rather than merely animating internal functions for laughs, Cells at Work! humanizes people's biological systems through two relatable characters, Niko and her father, Shigeru. The Far East Film Festival (Feff) in Udine came to an end on Friday, May 2, closing the 27th chapter in its ongoing celebration of Asian cinema. Feff has always been a festival that knows how to please its fanbase, and this year was no exception. Ranging from popular blockbusters to auteur-driven works, from crowd-pleasing comedies to emotional tearjerkers, and including tributes to cinematic heritage – such as the retrospective and publication Yokai and Other Monsters: From Asian Folklore to Cinema – the program offered a rich portrait of contemporary Asia. Audiences were especially thrilled by the presence of major stars in the theatre, including Sylvia Chang and Tsui Hark – both honored with the Golden Mulberry for Lifetime Achievement – and Japanese actor Lily Franky, who presented the Filipino film “Diamonds in the Sand” alongside its director, Janus Victoria.
The Taiwanese presence was notably strong this year, both in terms of films and guests.

Takeuchi is an old friend of Udine Far East Film Festival where was enthusiastically acclaimed for his bold screwball manga adaptations like “Thermae Romae” and “Fly Me to The Saitama”. This year he is back at Feff with his latest big-budget screen translation, “Cells at Work!”, produced by Warner Bros. Japan. More than an adaptation, the film is a complex fusion and reimagining of two original works: the manga series “Cells at Work!” by Akane Shimizu, first published in 2015, and its own spin-off “Code Black” by Shigemitsu Harada and Issei Hatsuyoshiya.

Taiwan industry icon Sylvia Chang will receive the Golden Mulberry lifetime achievement award at the 27th Far East Film Festival, which has set Chinese comedy “Green Wave” as its opening film.
The Far East Film Festival is set to once again transform the Italian city of Udine into a vibrant Asian cultural hub with its most expansive edition yet, showcasing 75 titles from 11 countries, including 7 world premieres, 15 international premieres, 20 European premieres, and 19 Italian premieres.
This year’s lineup specifically examines “time and society through cinema,” with selections that reflect current Asian social phenomena. The opening film, Chinese comedy “Green Wave” from director Xu Lei, explores the “tangping” movement (young people metaphorically “lying down” in rejection of ultra-competitive career paths), while films like “Upstream” address the gig economy. Female directors Yihui Shao and Yin Lichuan bring stories of gender equality with “Her Story” and “Like a Rolling Stone.”

Following the recent addition of Season 2 of Cells at Work!, Netflix is planning on bringing its fan-favorite spin-off anime series to the platform as well.
Cells at Work! Code Black will be joining the original Cells at Work! on Netflix starting March 1, 2025. While both of the edutainment series follow various types of cells and organisms within a human body, Code Black is a much darker look at the same concept, matching the title nicely. The show originally aired in 2021 and ran for 13 episodes, alongside the slightly shorter Season 2 of the original anime series.

In a surprising turn for Japan’s film industry, the highest-grossing cinema release of 2025 so far is not a feature film but a re-edited compilation of episodes from an upcoming TV series. Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- has made an impressive impact, earning over ¥2.5 billion ($16.5 million) after just five weeks in theaters, with 1.55 million admissions, according to Cinema Ranking Tsushin.
The 81-minute compilation, which premiered on January 17, serves as a precursor to a full TV series that is set to air on Nippon Television in April. Directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki, -Beginning- follows the story of a high-school student living on a space colony who becomes involved in an illegal mobile suit dueling sport known as Clan Battle after meeting a war refugee. Netflix’s anime library has significantly improved over the years. From introducing original series to adding carefully chosen titles, the popular streaming platform has compelled all kinds of viewers to celebrate the wondrous world of anime. However, when it comes to genre-wise popularity, comedy tends to inherently attract the audience because of its ability to entertain with no consequence.
Comedy is especially celebrated in anime because it is often accompanied by unique storytelling and a fresh narrative. A common problem among live-action anime adaptations is that they're often awkward condensations of their source material's most famous arcs and moments. Such movies compress their original stories to highlight reels, and reduce their cast of characters into a parade of cameos for audiences to recognize. Look no further than the Fullmetal Alchemist and Gintama movies as examples of this pet peeve in action.
Cells at Work! faced twice the challenge since it adapted not one, but two manga/anime that were the opposite of one another in everything from audience to tone. Add the fact that it also told a wholly original story, and the movie seemed like it would be crushed by the weight of its ambitions. Miraculously, Cells at Work! didn't just do its many source materials justice, but it also proved itself to be one of the stronger cinematic adaptations of a manga and/or anime yet.
