A real thrilling story visualized excellently. Countryside of VietNam was amazingly beautiful in every scence of the movie. Victor Vu did a wonderful job in directing and cinetography, his taste of sounds and film music was great too. Very touching and traditional.
Nguoi bat tu (or The Immortal) is the best action-thriller movie in Vietnam in 2010s. It has good soundtrack, good historical scene, quite great story (and no stupid comedy scene) but the ending may disappoint you. Because Vietnamese film law prevent/ban movies about superstition, especially bua ngai (or dark magic). Victor Vu told us about the fate of immortality, which is really pessimistic but enough for anyone to have a better view about life, time and destiny. But if you just care about action scene, you will be entertained a lot.
The Immortal is the most ambitious movie from director Victor Vu who make a name for himself for pushing the boundaries of my movie industry with his genre bending movies and personally, I am very grateful for that because watching this movie now I can see how much love and care he put into it to make one hell of a black magic movie that in term of acting, directing and cinematography I think this is the best from him thus far. I loved the first and the second arc unconditionally because it so simple yet effective to set up the tone and mood of the movie up until the third arc, then it all just fell apart. For me The third arc maybe messy but still works to some degree with a happy ending but because The Immortal refused to give the audience a proper conclusion to the story and end it with a pretentious dream or reality kind of ending it make the whole movie look pointless in my eyes. Somehow this movie took the director 5 years and 31 times to editing the script and for him this is the best version of the movie so in a way I kind of glad that he went with this one because my brain cannot imagine how much god-awful The Immortal can get with those rejected scripts
Apart from the beautiful visuals and good music, there's nothing else about this movie that I like, especially the extremely bad script!
Watched through haft of the movie and i was still wondering what the genre was. Victor Vu tried to mix everything into one single pot, which is quite daring and fresh, but... it resulted in a badly mixed combo. The movie itself has too many flaws and bad story-telling, some of which are even very amateur. But at least the music is nice. :)
