The 2025 Children’s and Family Emmy Awards announced its nominations on Thursday. This is the third year since these categories were separated from the Daytime Emmys in an extensive restructuring of the television academies’ TV awards. The Children’s & Family Emmys are on the move. As the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the nominations for the 3rd annual event, it also announced that the ceremonies would take place on March 15 in Los Angeles. (The competition’s first two years were held in December.)

As for the nominations themselves, leading the charge was Disney+’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” with 16 nods — including for young teen series, where it faces off with Disney+’s “Goosebumps,” Netflix’s “Heartstopper,” Netflix’s “One Piece” and Roku Channel’s “The Spiderwick Chronicles.”

“Percy Jackson” also received nods for several performers, including a posthumous nod for Lance Reddick. Other programs performing well include HBO/Max’s “Sesame Street” (13 noms), “Spiderwick Chronicles” (13 noms), Netflix’s “StoryBots: Answer Time” (10 noms), Apple TV+’s “Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock” (10 noms), “One Piece” (9 noms) and “Goosebumps” (9 noms).

There won’t be a strike at PBS after all. WGA-represented writers for the public network reached an agreement ahead of their cutoff time midnight on Thursday, TheWrap has learned.

“Thirteen, GBH and PBS SoCal are pleased to have reached an agreement with WGA East,” the stations said in a statement. “We look forward to continuing our work to deliver trusted public media to our audiences.”

The specifics of this agreement were not released.

There are currently 150 freelance writers who work at the three top PBS affiliates. WGA members were asking for fair compensation for writer-producers as well as for made-for-new-media programs be given WGA coverage and for there to be “reasonable residual payments for reuse on streaming services.” However, the biggest story in this particular standoff has to do with animation writers.

The guild asked for animation writers to have full union protections, which would be the first deal of its kind.

Writers on the PBS shows “Frontline,” “Nova” and “American Experience” have voted to authorize a strike if a new contract is not reached by midnight on Thursday.

The Writers Guild of America has been bargaining since late September with three PBS stations — Wgbh in Boston, Thirteen in New York and PBS SoCal in Los Angeles. The union is seeking improved terms, such as “reasonable” residuals for streaming, for 94 writers in the bargaining unit.

If a deal is not reached, the union could call a strike as soon as Friday. A strike would halt writing work on numerous PBS shows, which also include Ken Burns Specials, “American Masters” and the PBS Kids series “Donkey Hodie” and “Odd Squad.”

The union is seeking to expand its jurisdiction to cover PBS animated series, such as “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood,” “Molly of Denali” and “Pinkalicious & Peterrific.” Writers on those shows have pledged not to...

Writers Guild of America members at PBS authorized a strike of PBS. The strike will happen if management does not agree to a fair deal before the current contract expires at 11:59 p.m. Et on Nov. 21. This decision came after the network failed to come to the negotiation table for weeks.

Of the 94-member bargaining unit represented, 100% voted in favor of strike authorization on Monday. This figure accounted for 83% participation by members. The Council of the WGA East and the Board of Directors of the WGA West also both unanimously approved the strike authorization vote.

Additionally, writers at 20 animated PBS series — including “Alma’s Way,” “Carl the Collector,” “Cyberchase,” “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood,” “Molly of Denali,” “Pinkalicious & Peterrific” and “Work It Out Wombats!” — signed a pledge to not cross a picket line should a strike be called by the union. The 2nd annual Children’s & Family Emmys got underway on Saturday night, starting with the Children’s & Family Creative Arts Emmys at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. According to early results — pending final tallies — Disney+ and Netflix tied the lead with nine wins overall.

The most honored program of the evening was actually Netflix’s “Lost Ollie,” which scored five trophies. Disney+’s wins included multiple awards for “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special” and animated series “Baymax!” Nickelodeon picked up five wins.

And it was also a good night for Disney via its linear Disney Channel, which picked up four wins.

It can be hard to be a parent in this media environment. Plenty of streaming services offer kids content, but it can sometimes be difficult to find, or parental controls on streaming devices can stop working correctly at random, leaving parents guessing as to the best ways to provide child-safe content to their kids.

There won’t be a TCA Summer Tour this year, but the Television Critics Association is out with the nominees for its 39th annual TCA Awards. Wrapped HBO Emmy winner Succession, sophomore FX dramedy The Bear and HBO’s freshman drama The Last of Us lead the field with five noms each. See the full list below.

ABC’s Emmy-winning comedy Abbott Elementary and Peacock rookie Poker Face are next with four nominations apiece.

Among networks and platforms, the combined HBO/HBO Max doubled up its closest competition with 20 noms to FX’s 10. Streamers Disney+ and Peacock were next with nine each. PBS/PBS Kids got seven.

There are two new categories this year: Outstanding Achievement in Family Programming and Outstanding Achievement in Children’s Programming. Those nominations were dominated by PBS and/or streamers.

The final seasons of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and (maybe-probably) Ted Lasso got the cold shoulder from the Television Critics Assoc., which honored the Emmy-winning pair with a total of zero TCA Award nominations.

By contrast, Succession‘s swan song scored a leading five nods, putting the Roy family in a three-way tie with fellow HBO drama The Last of Us and Hulu’s breakout hit The Bear.

HBO’s Succession and The Last of Us as well as FX/Hulu comedy The Bear lead all nominations for the 39th annual Television Critics Association’s awards.

The nominations, voted on by the more than 200 members of the Television Critics Association, also saw HBO and its streaming counterpart, Max, lead all platforms with a combined 20 nods including five each for Succession and Last of Us and two apiece for Barry, The Other Two and The White Lotus.

FX — which produces The Bear (five) followed in second place with 10, while Disney+ (Andor) and Peacock (Poker Face) tied for third with nine apiece.

The coveted program of the year race featured last year’s winner, ABC’s Abbott Elementary, joined by Andor, AMC’s Better Call Saul, Poker Face, Succession, The Bear, The Last of Us, The Other Two and The White Lotus.

GBH Kids, home of Boston public media producer GBH’s award-winning children’s programming, has partnered with PBS Kids and Prx in announcing Keyshawn Solves It, a new podcast series. Launching on May 29, the serialized mystery podcast features a 10-year-old African-American boy on a mission to discover what has happened to the missing bikes in his North Minneapolis neighborhood ahead of his community’s Juneteenth celebration.

“Keyshawn Solves It” is the latest audio series from GBH Kids, producers of the award-winning PBS Kids series Arthur and Molly of Denali. The public media powerhouse has a strong history of producing podcasts for kids, including “The Creeping Hour,” “Pinkalicious & Peterrific,” “Molly of Denali,” and “The Arthur Podcast.”.

Netflix has announced the cast and filmmaking team for its upcoming family friendly movie series “Ivy and Bean.”

Elissa Down is directing the live-action films, based on the best-selling children’s book series. Down has previously worked with the streaming platform on the musical comedy “Feel the Beat” and the drama “The Honor List.”

Young actors Keslee Blalock and Madison Skye Validum will play Ivy and Bean, respectively, while Lidya Jewett is portraying a character named Nancy. Blalock has previously appeared in “Family Camp” and “Pulled From Darkness.” Jewett’s screen credits include “Good Girls,” “Feel the Beat” and “Nightbooks.”

“Ivy and Bean” centers on two girls who never expected to be friends. However, the quiet and thoughtful Ivy and the playful and fearless Bean soon discover that seemingly different people can become the best of pals. The series, written Barrows and illustrated by Sophie Blackall, has 12 books in total.

Half Mexican and half Chumash, showrunner Karissa Valencia grew up “torn” between modern life and Native culture. That meant attending pop music festivals and using cell phones, while also going to sweat lodges, powwows and ceremonies important to her family’s tribe, who live on a reservation in the Santa Ynez Valley in Santa Barbara.

One of her favorites is the bear ceremony, when the Chumash honor the bear emerging from hibernation in the spring.

“It’s so beautiful to see, and it really is an indigenous philosophy and belief that everything has a spirit and everything is alive,” she told Variety.

That “love for Native magic, but also superheroes and creating really fun cartoons for kids” is the origin of “Spirit Rangers,” Valencia’s upcoming Netflix animated series about three siblings who each transform into unique animal spirits to conserve the National Park they work and live in.

“Watchman” dominated, winning in each category it received a nomination. It is no coincidence that HBO was the most-awarded network, with six wins. Of those, four came from “Watchmen” one went to “Succession” and the other ended up with “A Black Lady Sketch Show.”

Who watches the Watchmen? The Television Critics Association apparently.

Eerily prescient HBO miniseries Watchmen has won four 2020 TCA Awards, including Individual Achievement in Drama (for Regina King’s work), Outstanding New Program, Outstanding Achievement in Movie, Miniseries, or Special, and Program of the Year. This marks a clean sweep of the categories that Watchmen was nominated in and, due to the TCA Awards’ relatively short list of 13 categories, amounts to the show winning roughly 31% of all the awards. Not bad!

Watchmen’s TCA Awards dominance is reminiscent of another timely HBO miniseries success last year. Chernobyl snagged Outstanding Achievement in Movie, Miniseries, or Special at the TCA Awards before moving on to win three Emmys. A similar fate is likely in store for Watchmen during the 72nd Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 20.

HBO’s “Watchmen” walked away the big winner at the 2020 Television Critics Assn. (TCA) Awards, picking up four trophies: program of the year; new program; outstanding achievement in movie, miniseries or special; and individual achievement in drama, for actor Regina King.

Pop’s “Schitt’s Creek” was the second-biggest winner, earning two trophies this year: outstanding achievement in comedy and individual achievement in comedy, for actor Catherine O’Hara.
