Pamela Adlon in Better Things (2016)
Every IndieWire TV Review from 2019, Ranked by Grade from Best to Worst
Pamela Adlon in Better Things (2016)
One of the strongest ways that time has become a malleable force that’s untethered us from our own sense of reality is the sheer number of TV shows released in a given year. There are some series that feel like they last aired new episodes in 2015, while others have completely disappeared from the public consciousness despite existing for mere months.

Such is the way of modern television. As a result, we’ve decided to keep track of all the 174 seasons of TV we’ve reviewed so far this year. Some shows have fared better than others, but a majority of these are recommendations.

Each review is organized by the letter grade (A+ to F) that accompanies each of them. Some series have prompted follow-ups after pivotal episodes or finales, but the links below will take you to initial season reviews of all the shows listed.

It’s worth noting...

How YouTube Is Trying to Get Will Smith His First-Ever Emmy Nomination (Exclusive)
YouTube could be the key to Will Smith finally earning a Primetime Emmy nomination — or win.

The superstar Formerly Known as the Fresh Prince has been nominated for two Academy Awards, five Golden Globes and one Screen Actors Guild Award, and has won four Grammys (out of eight nominations). Yet a Primetime Emmy nomination has so far eluded Smith.

That’s despite Smith’s long-running stint as the star of the hit 1990s sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Smith’s other TV credits include executive producing Upn’s “All of Us.” But neither of those even got him a primetime nod. Smith technically was nominated in 1992 for a Daytime Emmy Award, in the outstanding special class program category for his part in the special “NBA All-Star Stay in School Jam,” but that’s it.

One explanation is obvious: After “Fresh Prince,” Smith mostly turned his attention to film. His...

Ryan Hansen and Samira Wiley in Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television (2017)
YouTube is clearing its deck, as the service gets ready to unveil its new original programming plans. As part of the spring cleaning of sorts, YouTube series “Champaign Ill,” “Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television,” “Sideswiped,” and “Do You Want to See a Dead Body” won’t be back.

Raise your hands if you're too terrified to look into the mirror after watching Us. Jordan Peele has done it again, following his incisive social thriller Get Out with the full-blown horror Us, which is already a box office smash (and the source of our existential nightmares). If you're looking for more content from the writer-director-actor extraordinaire, you won't necessarily have to dig through all of his MadTV and Key and Peele sketches. So, what is he doing? The question you should ask is: What isn't he doing?

On top of these parts, Peele has his own production company called Monkeypaw Productions that gives him the resources to create...

The Umbrella Academy, Weird City and TV's Best Weird Af Shows
You may have heard that we're in the midst of Peak TV. The Golden Age of TV. A TV Renaissance.  That really just means that there's a whole lot of TV happening right now (like around 500 scripted shows), which is hard for those of us who want to watch as much of it as possible, but truly a gift for those of us who love it when TV gets really, really weird.  There are currently a whole bunch of really, really weird shows available to watch on a whole bunch of platforms, joined most recently by YouTube's Weird City and Netflix's The Umbrella Academy, both of which debuted last week. Weird City is an anthology series from Jordan Peele about the residents of a city divided into Above the...

LeVar Burton in Weird City (2019)
TV Review: ‘Weird City’ From Jordan Peele and Charlie Sanders
LeVar Burton in Weird City (2019)
There’s hardly a better example of just how overwhelming the TV offerings have gotten than “Weird City.” The new slick and bizarre comedy was co-created by Jordan Peele and “Key and Peele” writer Charlie Sanders, features a stacked cast, and is nonetheless stranded on YouTube Premium (though the first two episodes are available to stream for free). It’s the kind of show that could only exist during Peak TV, when the vast array of options can make room for bigger creative swings; it’s also the kind of show that could, regardless of merit, get lost in the shuffle.

But if you do tune into the six episodes that dropped on Feb. 13, “Weird City” quickly proves itself to be an interesting experiment, at the very least. It takes place in a sci-fi world wherein the “Haves” and “Have Nots” are divided into starkly segregated communities by a literal...

‘Weird City’ Review: Jordan Peele’s Sci-Fi YouTube Show Is a Fresh, Wild Treat
Sofía Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Sarah Hyland, Ed O'Neill, Eric Stonestreet, Beatrice the Dog, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, Rico Rodriguez, Reid Ewing, Frances Anderson, and Jeremy Maguire in Modern Family (2009)
For anyone who stopped watching “Modern Family” around the time it won a fifth Emmy for Best Comedy Series (aka five years ago), let “Weird City’s” premiere remind you why Ed O’Neill has sustained a career far broader than any one grumpy father figure. Sure, he’s been a dad’s dad on two iconic family sitcoms (plus “John From Cincinatti”), but O’Neill can pivot on a dime from amusement to anger, hope to heart-fall, and obliviousness to confusion. It’s this excellent comic timing combined by an eagerness to surprise that comes alive when he’s given material worth getting excited about. And his episode of Jordan Peele’s “Weird City” is pretty damn fun.

Set in a “not so distant future,” the YouTube original series frames its story around a society where the rich and poor are divided by a border wall. The “Haves” live “Above the Line,...

‘Weird City’ Boss Breaks Down ‘Meta’ Dystopian Anthology Series
LeVar Burton in Weird City (2019)
Welcome to “Weird City,” the futuristic metropolis where citizens either live “above” or “below” the line, dating apps dictate your total happiness, and Levar Burton is a seemingly all-knowing being. The YouTube sci-fi series, which hails from co-creators Jordan Peele and Charlie Sanders, kicks off its original six-episode run on Feb. 13 to put a comedic twist on the current anthology series trend.

Each standalone episode features a unique story within the framework of the city itself, with certain characters (like Burton) popping up throughout to thread the narratives together. Meanwhile a slew of guest stars including Ed O’Neill, Mark Hamill, Awkwafina, Laverne Cox and Sara Gilbert help bring the stories to life.

“There are definitely a lot of meta layers going on,” says Sanders, who notes he was largely inspired by Steven Spielberg’s “Amazing Stories” from the mid-1980s. “In each story the main characters are going to have standalone stories,...

As always seems to be the case when looking at the upcoming calendar for a given month, there is a wide range of offerings across streaming, broadcast, and cable. These also traverse different genres, covering both scripted and unscripted shows.

(We do this roundup of new shows pretty much every month — if you missed any of those previous picks, here are some notable TV premieres from October, November, and December of last year.)

Sundance: A24 Nabs Awkwafina’s ‘The Farewell’
Tzi Ma, Shuzhen Zhao, Han Chen, Aoi Mizuhara, Hong Lu, Diana Lin, Awkwafina, and Yongbo Jiang in L'Adieu (2019)
Awkwafina’s wedding dramedy “The Farewell” is close to landing a deal with indie studio A24 following its premiere this week at the Sundance Film Festival. The pact is for worldwide rights and is believed to be in the $6 million range, numerous individuals close to the negotiations told Variety.

“The Farewell” stars “Crazy Rich Asians” breakout star Awkwafina as Billi, a Chinese-American woman who travels back to China to visit her ailing grandmother. She discovers a family plot to keep grandma in the dark about her own terminal diagnosis, and agrees to help stage a fake wedding to give the matriarch one last hurrah. The film drew interest from a number of potential buyers, including Amazon and Netflix. But the asking price was a steep one and, in the case of Netflix, the filmmakers wanted a major theatrical release. Interested bidders were only allowed to make a pitch to the...

Jordan Peele's Star-Studded YouTube Series Is Like a Satirical Version of Black Mirror
Weird City might star all of your faves, but that doesn't make it any less . . . well . . . weird.

The satirical YouTube series comes from the minds of Jordan Peele and former Key & Peele writer Charlie Sanders and is set in the not-too-distant, dystopian future city of Weird. The sprawling metropolis separates its citizens into two definitive sections, getting rid of the middle class entirely: Above the Line (the obscenely wealthy) and Below the Line (the lower class).

Although each of the bizarre, peculiar stories is connected by the mysterious Dr. Negari (LeVar Burton), a mad scientist type who presides over Weird, Weird City is an anthology that embarks on a new, uncomfortably relevant theme with each episode, such as social media addiction and online dating. The series hits YouTube Premium on Feb. 13 and stars Dylan O'Brien, Michael Cera, Awkwafina, Rosario Dawson, Gillian Jacobs, Ed O'Neill, Laverne Cox, Steven Yeun, and Mark Hamill,...

Wacky Trailer For Jordan Peele's New Funny and Satirical Sci-Fi Anthology Series Weird City
YouTube Premium has released the first trailer for Jordan Peele and Charlie Sanders’ new satirical sci-fi anthology series Weird City.

The series looks like it could be crazy entertaining and it’s a series I’ll definitely be checking out. I really like the fun and strange wackiness of what I’m seeing in this trailer. I know Jordan Peele has become known for his twisted horror film Get Out and his upcoming movie Us, but it’s good to see him involved with comedy again.

As you’ll see, Weird City has an impressive cast of actors that include LeVar Burton, Mark Hamill, Michael Cera, Awkwafina, Rosario Dawson, Dylan O’Brien, Laverne Cox, Steven Yeun, Ed O’Neil, Hannah Simone, Yvette Nicole Brown, Trevor Jackson, and Auli’i Cravalho.

The story is set in the not-too-distant future metropolis of Weird. “In this dystopian setting of our show, the middle...

YouTube Announces Star-Studded Guest Lineup For Jordan Peele’s Upcoming Premium Series
YouTube has revealed the celebrity-laden lineup of guest stars for Get Out writer and director Jordan Peele’s upcoming YouTube Premium series Weird City.

The six-episode sci-fi anthology series is set in a future metropolis called Weird, and things there are pretty...well...you know. For the series' announcement back in June 2018, Peele described the project as a set of “comedy-driven twisted-ass science fiction stories that take place in a world close to ours but just a little bit off.”

Set to debut on YouTube Premium on Feb. 13, Weird City will feature a number of powerhouse guest stars: Mark Hamill (Star Wars), Laverne Cox (Orange Is the New Black), LeVar Burton (Star Trek), Dylan O’Brien (Teen Wolf), Rosario Dawson (Luke Cage), Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians), Steven Yeun (Voltron: Legendary Defender), Auli’i Cravalho (Moana), Michael Cera (Superbad), Ed O’Neill (Modern Family), Yvette Nicole Brown (Community), Gillian Jacobs (Community...

‘Weird City’ Trailer: Jordan Peele’s Sci-Fi Series Stars Mad Scientist LeVar Burton
LeVar Burton
Let’s face it: we’ve all wondered what it would look like to see LeVar Burton get taken up through a pneumatic tube. “Weird City,” an science fiction anthology series arriving on YouTube Premium next month, also casts him as something of a mad scientist, which seems extremely promising. Burton is just one of many notable cast members in the ensemble. Written by Jordan Peele and former “Key & Peele” writer Charlie Sanders, “Weird City” also features appearances by Steven Yeun, Mark Hamill, Gillian Jacobs, Awkwafina, Laverne Cox, Rosario Dawson, and Michael Cera.

The six-episode anthology series is set in an imminent science fiction world full of gratification machines and instant muscle pills. In this futuristic society, humans either live in the wealthy, affluent Above the Line part of the slightly-futuristic city of Weird, or Below the Line, where amenities aren’t quite so prevalent. Aside from looking at class differences,...

Candyman Sequel Coming in 2020 from Get Out Creator Jordan Peele
Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures (MGM) has partnered with Monkeypaw Productions' Jordan Peele & Win Rosenfeld to produce a re-imagining of Candyman, the 1992 horror classic adapted from Clive Barker's short story The Forbidden. The announcement was made today by Jonathan Glickman, MGM's President, Motion Picture Group.

Rising filmmaker Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) will direct from a screenplay by Jordan Peele and Rosenfeld. The film, a "spiritual sequel" to the original, returns to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood. Production is expected to begin Spring 2019. Universal Pictures will release Candyman theatrically in the U.S. on June 12, 2020.

DaCosta's feature film debut, Little Woods, starring Tessa Thompson and Lily James had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival this year and earned her the coveted Nora Ephron Award.

Peele wrote and directed the critically claimed Get Out which earned $250M worldwide for Universal Pictures.

YouTube to move original programming to ad-supported model
By 2020 all shows will be part of a single slate cmprising ad-supported and subscription VOD.

Responding to reports of a cutback in its output of original scripted series, YouTube says it “will continue to invest in scripted programming” but move all its original programming in front of its paywall to be ad-supported.

The new strategy will make YouTube Premium original series part of a single YouTube Originals slate with existing ad-supported programming.

Yvette Nicole Brown Joins Live-Action ‘Lady and the Tramp’
Yvette Nicole Brown
“Community” alum Yvette Nicole Brown will play Aunt Sarah in the live-action adaptation of Disney’s “Lady and the Tramp.”

Tessa Thompson is on board as Lady and Justin Theroux will voice the Tramp. Thomas Mann is portraying Lady’s human owner, Jim Dear. Kiersey Clemons is set to play Mann’s character’s wife, Darling.

Disney originally released “Lady and the Tramp” in 1955 in a story of an American Cocker Spaniel named Lady who lives with an upper-middle-class family. While the owners are away, Aunt Sarah looks after the baby. Her two trouble-making Siamese cats, Si and Am, deliberately mess up the house and trick her into thinking that Lady attacked them, leading to Aunt Sarah taking Lady to a pet shop to get a muzzle. Lady flees and ends up meeting a mongrel known as the Tramp and falling in love.

We Have Questions About Sophia's Future on Orange Is the New Black
Kate Mulgrew, Natasha Lyonne, Selenis Leyva, Laura Prepon, Taylor Schilling, Uzo Aduba, Dascha Polanco, and Danielle Brooks in Orange Is the New Black (2013)
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Orange Is the New Black season six.

Season six provides a hell of a lot of forward momentum for the main characters of Orange Is the New Black. Among the Litchfield inmates, Sophia (Laverne Cox) has one of the happier storylines. She's released early and given a $300,000 payment from Linda and McC. Of course, the money is a bribe so that Sophia wouldn't join Caputo's lawsuit against the company, but she is still able to leave prison and return to her family. And as Sophia explains to Caputo, she can use that money to send her son to college.

The question is: will Sophia return to Oitnb for season seven, considering she's no longer an inmate? Things could really go either way. Aleida, for instance, is released from Litchfield before the riot, and Elizabeth Rodriguez's character has remained a part of the show. Taystee is...
