Steve Coogan is terrific in true story-based comedy The Penguin Lessons which combines a quirky story about an ex-pat English teacher who accidentally acquires a penguin while teaching in 1970s Argentina, just as a dictatorship takes hold. Directed by the Full Monty’s Peter Cattaneo, The Penguin Lessons has some of that same mix of humor and humanity, in a off-beat tale that starts out comedic but ends up being moving, and saying something significant about people in a changing society.
Are penguins and authoritarianism having a moment? Could be. There was My Penguin Friend, another true story set in South America, about a grieving man whose life is changed when he is befriended by a lost penguin. And there was the Oscar-winning I’M Still Here,...

"What happened to you?" "I met a penguin." Lionsgate has revealed the official trailer for The Penguin Lessons, a cute dramedy about rescuing a penguin in Argentina. A similar story to My Penguin Friend with Jean Reno that also opened in theaters this year, but also not the exact same story. Starring Oscar nominee Steve Coogan, this poignant dramedy from director Peter Cattaneo follows an Englishman's personal and political awakening after he adopts a penguin during a cataclysmic period in Argentine history. He finds the small penguin covered with oil and cleans him up, making a new friend in the process. The main ensemble cast in here includes Björn Gustafsson, David Herrero, Jonathan Pryce, Vivian El Jaber, Aimar Miranda, Micaela Breque, Tomas Pozzi, and Ramiro Blas. It was shot in Spain though it takes place in Argentina. After premiering at TIFF, the movie will open in the UK next April...

David Schurmann’s My Penguin Friend, is an incredible true story of a fisherman named João whose life changed for good when a penguin arrived at his seaside home in a Brazilian village named Ilha Grande. And the most remarkable part of the story was that this penguin swam 5,000 miles to visit João, and did this every year for eight years straight. The heartwarming friendship between João and the penguin touched many people’s lives and that is what we will explore in this explainer of My Penguin Friend.
Spoilers Ahead
What happened when the penguin came to João?
João and Maria lived in a village called Ilha Grande in Brazil with their little son, Miguel. On Miguel’s birthday, he wanted to go fishing with his fisherman father as a birthday gift, but João was not so sure because the weather was really terrible, it was stormy, rainy, and really dangerous.

How the five-year real-life friendship between a retired Brazilian fisher and Magellanic penguin became a movie
The film My Penguin Friend has two main characters – one played by a Hollywood star and the other by a newcomer – but there was no doubt on set about who should be the most pampered.
The first-timer had a “trailer” with a natural saltwater pool and only worked until 3pm. To keep the star from being bitten by a mosquito from the tropical Brazilian beach, a flamethrower would clear the path before and after each scene.

As the summer begins to wind down, we got what might end up being the last big summer movie, although it also performed on the lower side of expectations. Read on for the weekend box office report.
20th Century released Fede Álvarez‘s “Alien: Romulus,” starring Cailee Spaeny, into 3,885 theaters on Friday, the first movie in the long-standing sci-fi horror franchise to be distributed by Disney. After receiving decent reviews with 81% on Rotten Tomatoes, the sci-fi horror film made $6.5 million in Thursday previews, just slightly less than the $7 million opening for “It Ends with Us” a week earlier. It then made $18 million on Friday, including those previews, which already pointed to the fact that the movie would probably open under $50 million.
Sure enough, it raked in an estimated $41.5 million, which is the second-best opening for the franchise after the $51 million weekend for 2012’s “Prometheus.” The “B+” that “Romulus” received on...

Coraline 15th Anniversary notched a nice no. 5 at the domestic box office with $8.63 million for the three-day weekend on 1,603 screens. The cume of $12.5 million including Thursday ($20+ million worldwide) broke its previous record for Fathom Events. Last year, the stop-motion animated feature by Henry Selick became the distributor’s highest-grossing classic with $7m+ at the box office over four days.
Coraline debuted in 2009 with an opening weekend gross of $16.8 million heading to $75.3 million domestically and $127 million globally. The PG-rated film based on the popular 2002 book by Neil Gaiman, was the first to be originally filmed in 3-D – with CG effects.
Dakota Fanning voices a young girl named Coraline, who walks through a secret door in her new house and discovers an alternate version of her life. On the surface, this parallel reality is eerily similar to her real life — only much better. But when this wondrously off-kilter, fantastical adventure turns dangerous and her counterfeit parents,...

An unexpectedly strong August continues with the usual (Disney films lead the way) and the unusual (both are R-rated). They’re also a testament to M&a strategy: Both are franchises that Disney acquired from 20th Century-Fox.
Nearly a half century after the Ridley Scott original, “Alien: Romulus” opened at #1 with $41.5 million, and “Deadpool & Wolverine” is #2 with $29 million. Both characters were assets Disney acquired in its $71.8 billion 2019 takeover of the Hollywood legacy studio, Fox.
That synergy extends to “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the sixth-biggest film of this summer. Throw in “The First Omen” and a reissue of “The Phantom Menace,” and Fox content has provided $825 million of Disney’s $1.467 billion industry-leading gross so far this year.
With three films in the top 10 (#8 is “Inside Out” from Pixar with its $642 million to date) and the distributor represents nearly 54 percent of the weekend’s gross. Its return to dominance...

A heartwarming tale of friendship between a lost penguin and a lonely fisherman touches on themes of the transformational power of friendship and love and what it takes to move on. Jean Reno shines in his role as a curmudgeonly fisherman who finds new purpose through his bond with the penguin. A delightful, emotional journey, My Penguin Friend may be too slow and saccharine for some people, but is an uplifting animal movie for the whole family.
Themes of compassion, courage, universal love, and rare friendships are sewn into the creative fabric of My Penguin Friend. Think of it as a bird out of water tale: An adorable, lost penguin finds himself far away from home only to bond with a humble fisherman named Joao (Jean Reno of Ronin and Mission: Impossible). The two hit it off, but both must move on with their lives. In doing so, they may lose each other.

This ecologically conscious family film tells the heartwarming true story of an unlikely bond formed between a fisherman and a wayward penguin – a bond that would transcend borders, both physical and metaphorical.
My Penguin Friend movie follows the real-life account of João, a simple yet solitary man living in coastal Brazil who rescues an injured Magellanic penguin after a chance encounter in the waters off Ilha Grande. Named “DinDim” by one of the local children, this intrepid bird would proceed to develop a deep affinity for João, returning annually across thousands of miles of open ocean just to spend time in his company.
Director David Schurmann spins this tale of interspecies compassion with a keen eye towards authenticity, opting to feature live penguin performers over digital alternatives. While clearly aimed at younger viewers, the film casts its net wider by subtly weaving in environmentalist undercurrents around overfishing, oil spills, and climate change.

Based on a heartwarming true story, My Penguin Friend (2024) promises both laughs and a good cry for the whole family. However, like the movie's animal star, the film doesnt quite soar, but it does manage to hit all the notes associated with this kind of inspirational, family-friendly fare. After all, its hard not to be delighted by the real-life inspiration for David Schurmanns feature. As the closing text reveals, a lost penguin, who really was named DinDim by those who met him, swam over 5,000 miles, from Patagonia to Brazil, for eight years.

After all, its hard not to be delighted by the real-life inspiration for David Schurmanns feature. As the closing text reveals, a lost penguin, who really was named DinDim by those who met him, swam over 5,000 miles, from Patagonia to Brazil, for eight years.

It’s been a few decades since last we saw Jean Reno playing a withdrawn curmudgeon protecting a pint-sized charge in “The Professional.” Now, with director David Schurmann’s “My Penguin Friend,” it’s a welcome return to a winning formula.
In the Brazilian filmmaker’s tender-hearted, all-ages adventure, Reno plays a grief-stricken father who gains a small, sweet companion after rescuing him from polluted waters. Inspired by the unshakeable bond between a real-life Brazilian fisherman and a Magellanic penguin thrown off his migration route, the French actor reveals new colors as a performer, shading the picture’s playful and poignant overtones with sensitivity and subtlety, making this a must-see for those who love uplifting stories about redemption, perseverance and empathy.
Reno plays João, whose journey began long before his penguin pal’s arrival, when his cozy, beachside home in Ilha Grande, Rio de Janeiro, was filled with love, music and laughter.

It has been 45 years since filmmaker Ridley Scott first got attention with his horror-sci-fi film “Alien” and seven years since his last movie in that franchise, 2017’s “Alien: Covenant.” Sir Ridley is still involved as a producer with “Alien: Romulus,” the first movie produced under 20th Century since being bought by Disney. For this latest reboot, they’ve brought on Fede Álvarez, best known for the “Don’t Breathe” movies and the 2013 remake of Sam Raimi‘s “Evil Dead.”
It’s been a long time since Sigourney Weaver‘s Ripley was leading these things, but for this one, they’ve brought on Cailee Spaeny of “Civil War” and “Priscilla,” as well as Isabela Merced from “Transformers: The Last Knight” and “Dora and the Lost City of Gold.

Warner Bros’ is pushing M. Night Shyamalan’s latest genre movie, Trap, from Aug. 2 to Aug. 9.
The news comes ahead of Warner Bros. studio presentation tomorrow, Tuesday, at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Nv.
The movie moves away from Sony’s family pic, Harold and the Purple Crayon, making it the only studio entry on Aug 2, to what is a very crowded frame on Aug. 9.
Among the wide releases already situated on Trap‘s new date is Amazon MGM’s The Fire Inside, Lionsgate’s videogame adaptation, Borderlands, Neon’s horror movie Cuckoo, and Roadside Attractions’ Jean Reno movie, My Penguin Friend.
Trap stars Josh Hartnett. Pic’s blurb: A father and teen daughter attend a pop concert, where they realize they’re at the center of a dark and sinister event.
Typically when there’s a pile-up like this, it means Warner Bros. is in the know that another film will move off of Aug.
