The mischievous Mogwai may have taken over pop culture in the 1980s, but fans waiting for Gremlins 3 will need to wait a little longer. According to original Gremlins writer Chris Columbus, the long-discussed threequel remains trapped in development limbo.

Speaking exclusively with GamesRadar+, Columbus explained that the script for the next installment in the horror comedy franchise needed a lot more work. "There's a bunch of scripts for Gremlins," he said. "I mean, nothing has been approved. We're working on something, but we're always [working on something]. Gremlins is a never-ending writing assignment."

"Honestly, we've been toying around with Gremlins and Goonies ideas for 30-plus years," Columbus continued. "We just haven't cracked it yet.

While director Guy Ritchie's Fountain of Youth seems to be appealing to audiences across the globe, domestic crowds still appear to prefer the genre mash-up hit The Gorge. The movie remains Apple's biggest breakout success of the year, having dominated the streaming charts ever since its debut back in February as a Valentine's Day special release. The Gorge recently reclaimed the top spot on Apple's domestic viewership charts, dethroning the poorly reviewed Fountain of Youth. Because Apple doesn't release as many titles as its competitors, its viewership charts remain rather static for long periods.

Martin Scorsese made Gangs of New York, and Guy Ritchie made Sherlock Holmes. Both movies serve as love letters to the filmmakers’ favorite cities, but only one of them features a topless Robert Downey Jr.participating in a bare-knuckle boxing match in super-slow-motion. Released in 2009, Sherlock Holmes remains one of Ritchie’s highest-grossing films, and certainly, his only feature that successfully spawned a theatrical sequel. The movie is going to be available to stream on Netflix in September, even as fans wait with bated breath for the third installment, which has been stuck in development hell for years.

Prime Video has another streaming hit on its hands — and this one’s the definition of an easy binge. Two months after its premiere, We Were Liars is still holding strong in the streamer’s Top 10 TV Shows in the U.S. As of August 18, the eight-episode psychological thriller sits at No. 5, behind onlyBallard, Countdown, Butterfly, and The Summer I Turned Pretty. That’s an impressive feat considering We Were Liars dropped all at once on June 18 — yet fans are still pressing play long after the usual post-binge drop-off.

Based on the best-selling 2014 novel by E. Lockhart, the series comes from Vampire Diaries duo Julie Plec and Carina Adly McKenzie.

Prime Video is swarming with adaptations of best-selling novels, from Reacher and Bosch to The Summer I Turned Pretty and We Were Liars. However, only the latter two are currently on the streamer's Top 10 list.

According to FlixPatrol, as of Aug. 16, We Were Liars is ranked No. 5 on Prime Video's Top 10 TV Shows in the United States. Despite dropping all eight episodes at once on June 18, We Were Liars remains a streaming hit two months later, staying in the Top 5 behind Ballard, Countdown, Butterfly, and The Summer I Turned Pretty. The psychological thriller is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by E. Lockhart, which was first published by Delacorte Press in 2014.

There's a new Sherlock Holmes coming to Watson next season. Matt Berry, who voiced the legendary detective in a lone Season 1 episode, will not reprise the role in the flesh for Season 2.

Instead, per Deadline, Robert Carlyle will step into the iconic role of Sherlock Holmes for the CBS medical drama series' sophomore outing, which will premiere this fall. "We are thrilled to have the mighty Robert Carlyle join the cast of Watson in Season 2," shared Watson showrunner Craig Sweeny in a statement. “Trainspotting” and “The Full Monty” star Robert Carlyle is returning to the director’s chair with the short film “Three.”

The short is led by Victoria Hamilton (“The Crown”), Isaac Gryn (“The Performance”) and Nicholas Rowe (“Young Sherlock”) and marks Carlyle’s first directorial effort since his debut in 2015 with “The Legend of Barney Thomson.”

“Three” follows a young man named Matt (Gryn), “who is invited into the home of a wealthy older couple for late-night drinks,” according to the film’s synopsis. “As the conversation deepens and the mood shifts, a tense and seductive game of control begins to unfold, revealing uncomfortable truths about power, sex and privilege.”

Co-written by Gryn and Patrick McPherson (“The Man”), “Three” has just wrapped post-production (see behind-the-scene photos taken by Anaïs Gallagher below) and is now being submitted to international film festivals. It serves as a proof-of-concept for a feature that is currently in development.

Three years before The Beekeeper, Jason Statham starred in the equally successful action hit Wrath of Man. Now, the movie is finding success on Hulu after being added to the streamer's library at the start of July.

Per FlixPatrol, a day after being added to Hulu, Wrath of Man has already landed on the streamer's Top 10 Movies list, currently sitting in the No. 9 spot. If the Statham-led action movie wants to climb higher on the chart, it will have to go through several popular features, such as the 1996 sci-fi blockbuster Independence Day, the 2013 crime comedy The Heat, the modern Disney classic Holes, and the Liam Neeson drama film Absolution. Critics & Audiences’ Reaction To Both Films

Both films have made plenty of noise on the streaming platform, although neither has been a big hit with critics or audiences.

Apple TV+ has debuted two new movies recently from Guy Ritchie and Sydney Sweeney, and now the projects are engaged in a battle at the top of the streaming charts. Hailing from Guy Ritchie is Fountain of Youth, the Indiana Jones-esque adventure thriller starring John Krasinski and Natalie Portman, which currently sits in the second spot on Apple TV+ streaming charts. It’s following behind Echo Valley, the latest project from star Sydney Sweeney that also features Julianne Moore, that’s occupying the top spot on the streamer’s charts. Neither film has been particularly well-liked by critics or audiences — Fountain of Youth earned scores of 36% from critics and 39% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and Echo Valley has come to rest at ratings of 51% from critics and 50% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Guy Ritchie has been extremely busy this year between the release of Fountain of Youth and also directing episodes of MobLand.

The Gentlemen Season 2 is finally in production. The update comes more than a year after the first season premiered on Netflix.

The streamer announced the production update with a behind-the-scenes first look at the new season, which sees lead stars Theo James and Kaya Scodelario getting into character and walking to set, while Guy Ritchie — who is back in the director's chair for at least one episode — counts them down from five. The “Wings of Fire” animated series at Amazon Prime Video has found its showrunner.

Variety has learned exclusively that Aaron Waltke has boarded the show as showrunner, executive producer, and co-writer. Tui T. Sutherland, who wrote the books on which the series is based, will also co-write and executive produce. Marc Resteghini will also executive produce under his Jack Tar Productions banner.

The show was first reported to be in development at Amazon back in February 2024 after a previous version with a different creative team was scrapped at Netflix.

“Road House 2” at Amazon MGM Studios has tapped Guy Ritchie to direct the follow-up action film that will star Jake Gyllenhaal, IndieWire has confirmed.

The sequel to 2024’s remake was announced way back in May of last year after the film got off to an impressive start of 80 million views in its first eight weeks on Prime Video, but this is the first update we’ve gotten since then.

Ritchie will take over for Doug Liman, who originally vented to IndieWire about his frustration that the film went straight to streaming rather than be released theatrically, which was a fallout of the film originally being greenlit at MGM before it was acquired by Amazon. Liman complained that the rug pull left people without compensation, though it was reported that Liman was offered a higher budget in exchange for making the film for streaming.

Film and high-end television (Hetv) production spend in the UK hit £5.6bn in 2024, with film production reaching £2.1bn, an increase of 56% on 2023.

The £5.6bn figure doesn’t match the 2022 record of £6.3bn, but is a 31% increase on the Hollywood strike-addled 2023, according to statistics released by the British Film Institute (BFI) today (February 6).

High-end TV production accounted for the lion’s share of the overall spend, reaching almost £3.4bn, an increase of 20% on 2023 and the third highest annual spend since tax relief was introduced in 2013, and 62% of the total spend.

Film and TV production in the U.K., whose boom came to a grinding halt in 2023 amid the Hollywood writers and actors strikes, rebounded in 2024 and is officially ahead of pre-Covid levels for the first time since the pandemic.

According to the British Film Institute, the total spend on film and high-end TV production last year reached £5.6 billion ($6.9 billion), a 31% increase on 2023 when £4.23 billion ($5.37 billion) on 394 productions was spent, and £6.27 billion ($7.72 billion) in the year 2022.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan remains a staple of the franchise over 40 years after its release. It showcased the true pinnacle of what a Star Trek film could be when given a chance to flex its muscles. It started a run of pretty successful films that would last until 2016. Not every film was as good as Wrath of Khan, though a few came close or nearly surpassed it.

Others have their own charm, even if they aren't the most loved films in the franchise. Still, even if you think a film or two has surpassed Wrath of Khan, what can't be denied is that Wrath of Khan established a proof of concept for how to succeed with Star Trek films. In an interview promoting Sweet Tooth Season 3 on Netflix, she revealed that the project is still very much alive—though progress feels as slow as Sherlock solving a jigsaw puzzle.

Susan Downey spilled the tea to Screen Rant, saying, “Every day we talk about, ‘What is the best next version of that?’ Anytime I see Robert and Jude [Law] together, which fortunately, I do get to see a few times a year, we hang out, and I’m just like, ‘Can I get these guys back on screen together?’ It’s magic. Professor James Moriarty finally got the best of the world’s greatest detective, and, as a result, the upcoming CBS series Watson takes place after the death of Sherlock Holmes. The first trailer (below) reveals Holmes’ venerable sidekick, Dr. Watson (Morris Chestnut), busily recruiting four of the world’s most brilliant physicians to also serve as detectives for their patients. It's official: Tom Hardy, Helen Mirren, and Pierce Brosnan have officially signed on to star in the Paramount+ series previously titled The Associate. The series will be loosely based on Showtimes hit crime drama series Ray Donovan, which ran on air for seven seasons from 2013 to 2019.

After entering into final negotiations back in October, Variety has reported that Hardy, Mirren, and Brosnan have officially joined the Paramount+ series from Guy Ritchie and Ronan Bennett. The casting update was paired with a bit of news that may disappoint Ray Donovan fans, as the series has been reworked into a standalone project with no connections to the Liev Schreiber-led franchise. The Associate has also been dropped as the series' title, with no new title announced at this time.

Guy Ritchie's next movie will no longer be hitting theaters in January 2025. Lionsgate has removed In the Grey, which reteams Ritchie with his The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare star Henry Cavill, from its 2025 release schedule.

According to Deadline, the reason Lionsgate has pulled In the Grey from its Jan. 17, 2025 release date is because the movie isn't finished. The action thriller wrapped filming in October 2024, meaning that Ritchie has spent more than a year completing post-production work and is still not finished. A new release date has not yet been announced by Lionsgate. It's a sad update for fans who were looking forward to seeing the filmmaker's third Cavill-led movie. The actor previously starred in 2015's The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and 2024's The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.

Prime Video’s ad-supported reach in the UK is 19 million viewers, Amazon has revealed for the first time.

At a UK Upfront event in London this evening attended by the likes of Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Idris Elba, the company talked up its streaming biz, saying its customer base is equivalent to more than a third of British adults.

In a bid to persuade advertisers their pounds and dollars are being well spent, Amazon said 52% of UK Prime Video viewers did not watch any paid-for TV, and that among these 36% spent more in the Amazon.co.uk store than the average spend of Amazon customers.
