Dawn Breaks Behind the Eyes

Near-Perfect Horror Movies You Might Have Missed
Image
In this day and age, there are more films being made than ever before. It's easy to miss movies, so many audiences turn to sites like Rotten Tomatoes for guidance, though that may not necessarily have an impact on the box office. There's a common misconception about how that site works, though. The score given to each film isn't a representation of how good the movie is; instead, it represents the percentage of critics who would recommend the film overall. In other words, if half of all surveyed critics loved a movie and half of them hated it, the movie would clock in at 50% Fresh. That may not seem like a great score, but all it indicates is that a movie is polarizing; you might find yourself on either side of that divide.

With that in mind, the films on this list have near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes scores. That means almost...

Sitges FanPitch: ‘Idaho Winter,’ ‘Malamuerte,’ ‘This Thing,’ Loneliness, Women’s Empowerment, and Gruesome Takes on the Zeitgeist
Image
QuarXX’s “This Thing Inside of Me,” Caye Casas’ “Malamuerte” and maybe the biggest buzz title in the whole selection, Sean Wainsteim’s “Idaho Winter,” a multi-media mashup, feature in a robust, variegated lineup at Sitges FanPitch, which is quickly establishing itself as a key early fall global genre project platform drawing on titles from not only Spain but Europe, Latin and North America and Asia.

Unspooling Oct. 6-7, the FanPitch ranks as one industry centrepiece at the Sitges, International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, a hallowed genre fest Mecca and one of the most important in Europe.

Projects range widely from multiple psychological thrillers, often driving deep into protagonists’ deep trauma, to black horror-comedy, stylish scarefests, near-future allegories, the allegedly true-event paranormal, and vampire actioners.

One title, “Idaho Winter,” is billed as “YA meta-fiction.” Another, fantastical series “The Lost Gods of Memphis,” surely the biggest budgeted of all projects at this year’s FanPitch,...

Spain’s Vertigo Joins ‘All the World Drops Dead,’ Kevin Kopacka’s Horror Mystery About Global ‘Fear of the Future’ (Exclusive)
Image
Locarno — Spain’s Vertigo Films has boarded “All the World Drops Dead,” committing to co-produce the next scarefest from Austrian Kevin Kopacka, director of 2021’s noteworthy “Dawn Breaks Behind the Eyes.”

Set up at Germany’s Manderley Films, which oversaw VFX on “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “All the World Drops Dead” has been brought to market at Locarno’s Match Me! Forum by producer and co-writer Lili Villlányi.

Also produced by Manderley Films’ founder Rebekka Garrido, “All the World Drops Dead” ranks as one of the biggest genre plays on offer at this year’s Swiss festival – not an idle boast as distributors worldwide turn to genre, as well as family animation, as a reaction to plunging cinema theater audiences for arthouse cinema through and after the pandemic.

Another ambitious horror mystery, “All the World Drops Dead” turns on nihilistic backpacker Fonda (23) who is hitchhiking towards a canyon...

Horror Highlights: Dawn Breaks Behind The Eyes, The Sacrifice Game, Hear US Scream Volume II
Image
Dawn Breaks Behind The Eyes: "Margo, who comes from a noble family, inherited a castle that she inspects with her ill-tempered husband Dieter. When they arrive at the run-down keep, their relationship is put to a test as their sanity slowly deteriorates. This opens up a new world. As time and space begin to shift around them, a reality that only exists within the walls of the eerie building is exposed - a reality full of warmth and excess.

Things aren't as they seem in this genre-bending film, that shifts between different story layers in unpredictable ways. It is a love letter to European cinema of the sixties and seventies that will leave viewers guessing what will happen next. "

Luisa Taraz and Anna Platen in Dawn Breaks Behind the Eyes (2021)
"Renovating this place will cost us a fortune." Dark Sky has revealed a trailer for Dawn Breaks Behind The Eyes, a horror thriller film from filmmaker Kevin Kopacka arriving on VOD this summer. This first premiered at Fright Fest in the UK last year. Here's the intro: "Coming on Gothic retro like an undiscovered Mario Bava S&m shocker before turning into a José Ramón Larraz acid trip, director Kevin Kopacka’s 70s exploitation homage is one from the Berberian Sound Studio. Having just inherited a run down castle, a melancholic woman and her bad tempered husband choose to spend the night before deciding what to do with the creaky, cobwebbed pile. But after horrendous mutilation, reality shifts and a Lovely Sort of Death fast approaches… Get ready to have your mind blown by a fantasy freak-out and an Acid Frog, Gandalf and Liquid Brain Orchestra soundtrack." Starring Anna Platen,...

MPI Media Group has added Kevin Kopacka’s German-language arthouse horror and Fright Fest 2021 premiere Dawn Breaks Behind The Eyes to its international sales slate for the virtual EFM.

The gothic homage to European mind-bending genre from the 1960s and 1970s stars Luisa Taraz and Frederik von Lüttichau as a married couple whose relationship and sanity are tested when they spend the night at a dilapidated castle where time and space become fluid.

Anna Platen, Robert Nickisch and Jeff Wilbusch round out the main cast. Kopacka co-wrote the screenplay with Lili Villanyi, who served as producer.
