The circumstances of the long-distance relationship between Erin (Katie Aselton) and Charlie (Daveed Diggs) are a little atypical in “Magic Hour,” but director-star Aselton and co-writer Mark Duplass have long been able to cook up tantalizing, high-concept hooks for dramas about mental strain. It seems as if a weekend in Joshua Tree might offer a rare, in-person respite for the couple. But the rendezvous shows they couldn’t be further apart, setting up an even bigger drama at the heart of Aselton’s occasionally frustrating yet considerably daring drama.
Neither Erin or Charlie will mention exactly what’s driven a stake between them after Erin’s longtime friend (Brad Garrett) hands her the keys to his desert abode, and their vague use of “it” can irritate in the time it takes to get to the film’s big reveal. However, “it” certainly has to be big when the two would...

When people decide that they want to start a family, it is often said that it takes a village to make it happen. Luckily, for the Madrigal family from Walt Disney Pictures' global phenomenon "Encanto," there is a small village living in their casita (or "little house" in Spanish) to help each other with anything that may arise. But for those of us who don't live in the Madrigals' idyllic Colombian town, it may be difficult to keep track of each magical member of the family.
In the opening number of the acclaimed animated feature titled "The Family Madrigal," musical juggernaut Lin-Manuel Miranda of "Hamilton" and "Moana" fame did his best to outline the different branches that make up the family tree. The song, inspired by "Belle" from the 1991 classic "Beauty and the Beast," follows Mirabel (voiced by Stephanie Beatriz) as she introduces the audience to each member of the...

No doubt about: The big guns of Broadway’s spring season are arriving fast and furious, and boosting box office figures from receipts to ticket prices. Another newcomer – Good Night, And Good Luck, starring George Clooney, last week became the latest member of the $2 Million Club with just five previews and just weeks after Othello, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, began regularly hitting the rarefied $2 million in weekly receipts.
Also last week Glengarry Glen Ross, headed by Kieran Culkin, Bob Odenkirk and Bill Burr, came very close to the $2M mark with $1,907,467, a house record at the Palace Theatre – and that’s just for seven preview performances; the full eight-performance schedule should push it over the edge. (Opening night is March 31.)
Meanwhile, The Picture of Dorian Gray, starring Succession‘s Sarah Snook in all the roles, pulled in $848,904 for its first six, sold-out previews at the Music Box Theatre.

The last time 9-1-1‘s Athena Grant boarded a cruise ship, it sank to the bottom of the ocean after being hijacked and blown up by terrorists, so there’s only one thing that could possibly get her onto Doctor Odyssey‘s titular vessel for Thursday’s crossover event (ABC, 9/8c).

Updated, with additional details: On his visit to the Kennedy Center this afternoon, the arts institution’s new chairman of the board, President Donald Trump, was asked by a reporter why it was so important for him to spend his time with the venue and on its lineup.
“You have so much on your plate. Why come here today?” the reporter asked.
Trump answered, “This represents a very important part of D.C., and actually our country, and I think it’s important to make sure that our country is good shape and is represented well. When people look at this — I’ve been hearing for a long time that they come here, and they’re disappointed when they come here. We want them to be excited.”

Updated, with comments from press secretary: Donald Trump on Monday will make his first visit to the Kennedy Center since he ousted leadership and ensured that he would be chairman of the D.C. arts institution.
While the center has been beset by cancellations of major shows by artists protesting the Trump takeover, the president told reporters that “we have to straighten it out. It is not a good situation. Like everything else in this country.”
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the president “hopes to restore arts and culture that embrace American tradition, not disparage it, as we have unfortunately seen over the past several years.” She said that Trump would do a tour of the center and would “perhaps be discussing some future plays and musicals and theatrical programs that the center will be hosting under his new leadership.”

Vice President Jd Vance was loudly booed Thursday night as he attended a National Symphony Orchestra performance at the Kennedy Center, which has been taken over by Donald Trump and his allies.
The audience expressed their displeasure as Vance took his seat along with his wife, Usha, according to video shot by Andrew Roth, global affairs correspondent for The Guardian. Vance can be seen smiling and waving as the audience continued their jeers.

Last month, Trump fired the chairman of the Kennedy Center, David Rubenstein, and ousted the president, Deborah Rutter. Trump also ousted Joe Biden’s appointees to the board of the institution. With the board now filled with his allies, Trump then had himself elected chairman, with one of his loyalists, Ric Grenell, serving as president.

Growing up, Dana Ledoux Miller’s mother would take her and her brother to matinees of films like “The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin” and “Beauty and the Beast.” After, she’d wear out her tapeplayer, listening to and singing along with the soundtracks for the animated classics, imagining she was Belle, Jasmine, Ariel or other Disney princesses.
“It made me want to tell stories,” Miller says.
But she never thought she’d get a chance to play a central role in determining the fate of one of those Disney heroines, which she did as the co-writer and co-director of “Moana 2,” one of the biggest hits of 2024. The sequel, which was co-directed by Jason Hand and David Derrick Jr., is debuting on Disney+ this week after earning more than $1 billion at the global box office. Othello, now in previews at Broadway’s Barrymore Theatre and starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal had a weekly gross last week of $2,818,297, making the revival the top-grossing (eight performance) play in Broadway history.
The previous record holder was Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which grossed $2,718,488 for the week ending December 31, 2023.
Othello‘s number also improves on its own previous weekly take, when it took $2,637,158 for its first seven previews for the week ending March 2. The production also carried that week’s top ticket price, by far, at $361.90, more than twice the average price of other big-selling shows. Last week’s average Othello ticket price was $338.09, down a tad from the first week.
Othello, directed by Kenny Leon, opens Sunday, March 23, for a strictly limited engagement through Sunday, June 8 at the Barrymore.

Othello broke the record for highest weekly gross for a Broadway play last week, and was the top-grossing show in the industry for the second week in the row.
The play, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, brought in $2.8 million in its second week of previews and played to 100 percent capacity at the Barrymore Theatre. Ticket prices are high, with an average price of $338.09, which is hundreds above the next highest ticket prices of $158 at Wicked and Hamilton.
Still, the prices are below the highs reached during the prior week, when the show commanded an average ticket price of $361.90. The play, directed by Kenny Leon, is scheduled to open March 23.
Othello again beat out Wicked, which had been the highest grossing show over the past several months. Wicked took the second spot last week, with $2.4 million, followed by Hamilton with $1.7 million, The Lion King with $1.5 million and The Outsiders with $1.3 million.

Trust Whoopi Goldberg to say her mind, even when her mind can divide the whole internet. The ABC moderator revealed on Thursday that she has “no plans” to return to the Kennedy Center until it’s restored to “what it was supposed to be.”
Whoopi’s announcement came during Wednesday’s episode of the talk show, as she and her co-hosts discussed the “Hamilton” producers canceling the Tony Award-winning musical’s spring 2026 run at the Kennedy Center. In canceling, the producers explicitly cited Trump’s takeover as the reason.

Producers of Hamilton, including the musical’s creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, have canceled a planned 2026 engagement at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., decrying the “recent purge by the Trump Administration” of the venue’s professional staff and center-produced events.
“Given these recent actions, our show simply cannot, in good conscience, participate and be a part of this new culture that is being imposed on the Kennedy Center,” said producer Jeffrey Seller in a statement. “Therefore, we have cancelled the third engagement of Hamilton at the Kennedy Center, originally scheduled for March 3-April 26, 2026.”
The engagement would have been the third run of Hamilton at the Kennedy Center.
“Hamilton was proudly performed at the Kennedy Center in 2018 during the first Trump administration,” Seller said. “We are not acting against his administration, but against the partisan policies of the Kennedy Center as a result of his recent takeover.”

It was a night of firsts at the 2025 Oscars, with some winners making history and various records being set.
After emceeing the Emmys twice, Conan O'Brien served as the Oscars host for the first time, and he noted several of the historic moments while on the big stage.
By winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Emilia Pérez, Zoe Saldaña became the first American of Dominican descent to prevail. "I am floored by this honor," she stated at the podium. "My grandmother came to this country in 1961. I am a proud child of immigrant parents, with dreams and dignity and hard-working hands. I am the first American of Dominican origin to accept an Academy Award, and I know I will not be the last. I hope!" Saldaña was the frontrunner all season long, having already dominated all of the precursor awards on her road to the Oscars.

The 2025 Academy Awards ceremony has been full of surprises and history-making moments. From Kieran Culkin delivering an all-time great speech after winning Best Supporting Actor for "A Real Pain" to "Flow" becoming the first Lativan movie in Oscars history to win an award, this year's ceremony is one of the most feel-good in recent memory (so far). And those aren't the only moments worth celebrating, as Paul Tazewell became the first-ever Black man to win the Best Costume Designer prize, which he received for his work on the cinematic adaptation of the Broadway musical "Wicked."
Of course, Tazewell's moment has been a long time coming. Paul Tazewell made history on Sunday night as the first Black man to win to an Oscar for costume design.

Can Paul Tazewell win a Grammy? We’re not sure, but if he does, he’d make history. The acclaimed costume designer won his first Academy Award for his impressive frocks in Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked” at the 2025 Oscars. He already has an Emmy Award for “The Wiz Live!” and a Tony Award for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton.” Perhaps he should consider picking up songwriting.

“Wicked’s” Paul Tazewell has made Oscars history by becoming the first Black man to win for best costume design.
Tazewell, a previous nominee for “West Side Story,” already has an Emmy award (“The Wiz Live”) and Tony award (“Hamilton”) under his belt. He triumphed over fellow costume designers: Arianne Phillips (“A Complete Unknown”), Linda Muir (“Nosferatu”), Lisy Christl (“Conclave”) and Janty Yates and David Crossman (“Gladiator II”).
Tazewell has swept the season scooping up the BAFTA, Critics Choice and Costume Designers Guild awards along the way. He was also named one of Variety’s 10 artisans to watch in costume design, and was honored with the Variety Artisan Award in costume design at the Santa Barbara Film Festival.

No other comedy series currently on air gets to have as much fun as CBS's Ghosts. With an eccentric ensemble and a premise that allows for so many unique situations, the series continues to be a fan-favorite -- and for good reason! The series has leaned into music and jokes about musicals in the past, but one cast member has recently spoke up about whether the cast would want to do a full musical episode in the future.
We haven't heard from the executive producers about whether they'd support a musical episode of Ghosts, but one of the show's stars has revealed she thinks it would be an incredible idea. Rose McIver, who plays Samantha on the popular comedy series, recently spoke with TVLine about why she thinks a musical episode would be perfect for Ghosts.

Whoopi Goldberg has been out sick on The View following her SNL 50 Anniversary Special red carpet walk.
Whoopi, who just shared some “secret news” with the ladies, contracted the flu and missed a week of work on The View.
Whoopi will be presenting at the upcoming Oscars in Los Angeles in early March, so this sickness is coming at a bad time for the veteran host.
Joy Behar stepped up again to cover for Whoopi, as she did in January while Whoopi was off in Paris.
Joy, who is starring in her Off-Broadway show, My First Ex-Husband, may not be able to maintain the stamina required to moderate The View.
Joy may need extra time off, which could be why The View is teasing a special new co-host.
Ariana Debose set to co-host on The View

Songwriter and Tony Award-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda really, really wanted to appear in Jon M. Chu's recent "Wicked" adaptation — but I bet you'll never guess which role he was gunning for.
During an appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" in February 2025, Miranda, the man behind Broadway hits like "Hamilton" and huge cinematic songs like "We Don't Talk About Bruno" from "Encanto" revealed that he basically begged Chu for a specific and incredibly small role in the adaptation of Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman's acclaimed Broadway musical. "In the opening number of the show, this one munchkin runs out and goes, 'Is it true you were her friend?'" Miranda told Colbert. "Because, man, I don't know if you've seen a live production of 'Wicked,' but sometimes they really put some sauce on the ball when they deliver that line. It's where the story starts. So I was like,...

The production also touted having “the youngest ticket buying audience” in Broadway history, with 14 percent of purchasers between the ages of 18 and 24, compared to the current industry average of 3 percent.
All In: Comedy About Love also completed its Broadway run at the Hudson Theatre last week, bringing in $1.53 million for its final rotating cast featuring Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hank Azaria, Annaleigh Ashford and Tim Meadows. “SNL50” dazzled on Sunday night with a three-hour-plus celebration of the late night institution’s 50th anniversary.

It wouldn’t be a Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary celebration without a John Mulaney musical sketch.
Once again joined by Pete Davidson, Sunday night’s iteration had some subtle political undertones as it took viewers on a journey through New York City’s own history over the past five decades.
The sketch began with Mulaney selling hot dogs and heroin in 1973 Times Square, when he’s approached by Davidson and David Spade as two transplants with “dreams of making it big” in the city.
Mulaney’s hot dog salesman is taken aback, explaining that “New York is dying. It’s a bankrupt hellhole.”
But regardless, the men plan to persevere. Cue Adam Driver and Maya Rudolph as said hot dog and heroin, respectively, to kick off the musical numbers, which are meant to show the two newcomers “what New York is all about.”

The title for the weirdest sketch of the “SNL50” special may have just been claimed by John Mulaney’s latest and most star-studded musical mashup to date.
The former “Saturday Night Live” writer returned, following his appearance during the “SNL50” monologue, in a sketch that begins in 1975 New York with him selling “hot dogs and heroin” to two out-of-town newbies (Pete Davidson and David Spade as two guys who are definitely the same age). When the newcomers ignore his warnings about the city, Mulaney leads them on a mind-boggling musical journey into New York’s past and future.
The sketch, yet another bold follow-up to Mulaney’s viral “Diner Lobster” from 2018, remixes songs from “The Lion King,” “Les Misérables” and “Hamilton,” and it features guest appearances from, among others, Kate McKinnon as Rudy Giuliani, Adam Driver as a singing hot dog, Kristen Wiig as a green M&m, Scarlett Johansson as...

John Mulaney took the “Saturday Night Live” 50th anniversary special on a five-decade journey through the ups and downs of the show’s New York City home base. Starting with the 1975 birth of the series, Mulaney’s star-studded medley began with convincing former cast members Pete Davidson and David Spade that the grimy 1970s was still a glorious time to live in New York.
From there, it was a decade-by-decade look at the city, with Adam Driver dressed as a hot dog, Kate McKinnon showing up as a disgraced former mayor Rudy Giuliani and Scarlett Johansson dressed as Audrey from “Little Shop of Horrors,” joking about real-life husband Colin Jost. Also, Nathan Lane sang an ode to cocaine to the tune of “The Lion King’s” “Hakuna Matata” — a song he sang for the film as Timon.

In the past couple of months, “Wicked” (2024) has garnered global admiration, landing it multiple award nominations including Best Picture for this year’s Oscars. The film is an adaptation of the beloved musical that remains on Broadway to this day. We haven’t seen the nation be this excited about a musical since Lin Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton,” which made its Broadway debut in 2016. While “Hamilton” had overt themes of the American dream and socioeconomics, the motifs in “Wicked” take on a more fantastical image that can make the morals appear very surface level and palpable.
One of the reasons this story is so beloved is because many people can identify with the lessons and characters. “Wicked” acts as a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz,” where we explore the friendship between Glinda the Good Witch, and Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West. The story dismantles the long-lived archetypes of the two witches,...

Now you know, when Richard Linklater’s “Merrily We Roll Along” film adaptation premieres in about 15 years, it will star Broadway actress Hannah Cruz.
The “Suffs” star has joined the project as Gussie opposite Paul Mescal, Beanie Feldstein, Mallory Bechtel and Ben Platt, TheWrap has learned. Filming will take place over the next two decades, similar to the director’s process for his Oscar-winning movie, “Boyhood.”
Producers include Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum, Ginger Sledge, Jonathan Marc Sherman, Mike Blizzard and Linklater. Some filming had already taken place as of late 2024, years after Blumhouse first acquired the rights in 2019.
The movie is an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s 1981 musical of the same name. The 2023 Broadway revival notably starred Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe.
Cruz was most recently seen in the Tony-winning “Suffs” and is currently attached to the “Big Fish” industry reading led by Patrick Wilson.

When this year’s Oscar nominations were announced, Wicked costume designer Paul Tazewell was defying gravity thousands of feet in the air.
“I was actually on a plane coming from London, and I couldn’t get my wi-fi to work,” the Best Costume Design nominee tells Gold Derby (watch above). “I finally just gave up, and I dozed off for a bit. When I woke up, I was able to get on the wi-fi, and I saw all of the texts that had come through. I was so pleased!”
Tazewell continues on, “To have an epic film like Wicked acknowledged by my peers, by other people in the film community, and to receive the love of fans, that is beautiful. It’s hugely life-changing. Touching hearts is why I do what I do. So I take that on with celebration and with great meaning.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda hoped to play a minor role in the film adaptation of Wicked but his casting request was denied, he said during a Monday appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
“In the opening number of the show, this one munchkin runs out and goes, ‘Is it true you were her friend?’ Because, man, I don’t know if you’ve seen a live production of Wicked, but sometimes they really put some sauce on the ball when they deliver that line,” Miranda told Colbert.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is opening up about why he was ultimately not cast in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked.
Jon M. Chu directed the movie musical, the filmmaker Miranda had worked with on the film version of In The Heights in 2021.
“This has gotten blown away out of proportion,” Miranda told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show.
The CBS late-night talk show host joked, “And we’re going to continue to do that right now.”

Jon M. Chu's musical "Wizard of Oz" riff "Wicked," based on the pop-u-lar Broadway musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, wasn't terribly well-reviewed in the pages of /Film, cited by this author as being a mushy mess, led by two weirdly dispassionate lead performances from Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. The review pondered why Chu, who ordinarily can make exciting, energetic musicals like "Step Up 3D" and "In the Heights," decided to let himself be upstaged by busy production design and dull, eternally retreaded fantasy mythology.
My review, however, is certainly the outlier on "Wicked." On January 23, Chu's film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress (for Erivo), Best Supporting Actress (for Grande), and Best Production Design. The film was also generally well-reviewed, earning an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 380 reviews). Most importantly, the massive cult of Broadway devotees flocked to see Chu's film version,...
