Sọpẹ́ Dìrísù Finds Solitude, Narges Rashidi Thrives On Adrenaline: How ‘Gangs Of London’ Stars Prep For Intense Scenes
Image
Gangs of London gives Squid Game a run for its money when it comes to TV ultra-violence and also offers up a complex web of intrigue and betrayal. Two of its stars go to very different places to prepare themselves for the more intense days on set. One prefers solitude. The other thrives on noise and adrenaline.

Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, who plays undercover cop-turned-gangster Elliot Finch, and Narges Rashidi, who is Kurdish gang boss Lale in the show, talked about how they get in the zone when the tension is ramped up.

“I scream,” Rashidi said. “I run around a lot to get my adrenaline very high. I feel like once my body has a lot of adrenaline, I can actually go anywhere. That really helps me. It’s actually a very technical thing.”

If Rashidi is loud, Dìrísù is at the other end of the volume scale. “I’ll disappear...

The 26 Scariest Movies on Netflix: ‘Hereditary,’ ‘Fear Street,’ and More
Image
[Editor’s note: This guide was published in fall 2021 and has been updated multiple times since.]

As Netflix’s library of films ebbs and flows, finding the right movie to watch can feel like bailing out an ocean with a spoon. And if you’re looking for a quality horror movie in particular, the search only gets harder. With the reality that Horror is one of the cheapest genres to produce, streamers like Netflix are cluttered with a veritable tsunami of bloody titles that sometimes seem indistinguishable from one another. Curating the 25 scariest movies on Netflix is then quite a process of selection and reduction.

If you’re looking for a good horror movie to watch on Netflix that will truly scare you, picking a final selection can prove a more daunting task than sitting through yet another “Haunting of Hill House” rewatch; with or without its beloved “Bly Manor” chaser. But while the streamer’s priorities seem to shift as quickly as its content selection grows,...

Where You’ve Seen the Cast of ‘Sinners’ Before | Photos

Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” is both a crowd and critical darling — and a box office smash, so you may be wondering where you’ve seen the cast of his vampire horror hit before.

Netflix’s Best-Kept Secret: This 100% Rated Horror Masterpiece Is So Scary, Viewers Can’t Sleep After Watching
Image
Netflix’s Best-Kept Secret Horror Masterpiece!(Photo Credit –Netflix)

Netflix viewers are still trying to catch their breath after stumbling upon His House, a horror flick that crept up from the shadows of the streaming giant’s catalog and clawed its way to a flawless 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

This film is not your typical scream-and-run ghost story, it is far deeper, scarier and personal.

A New Home or A New Hell

Remi Weekes’ directorial debut, dropped in 2020, might have flown under the radar at first, but now it’s haunting everyone who dares to press play. The film follows a South Sudanese refugee couple trying to start anew in a bleak corner of England.

However, what sets His House apart isn’t just the ghosts lurking in the dark corners, it’s the reality crawling underneath. Racism from suspicious neighbors, the looming threat of deportation, and trauma clinging to...

How ‘Sinners’ Star Wunmi Mosaku Learned ‘Horror Is Such a Powerful Genre’ — as Performer and Audience
Image
Although several of her breakout roles, from “His House” to “Lovecraft Country,” have been within the horror genre, it took seeing “Get Out” for actress Wunmi Mosaku to see why audiences would seek out that type of storytelling. “I thought it was an unnecessary feeling, being scared,” she told IndieWire over Zoom.

Having a thrilling experience that still achieved an impressive level of social commentary left Mosaku changed, and took her down a road leading to “Sinners,” written and directed by Ryan Coogler, which sees her opposite Michael B. Jordan as a soulful hoodoo practitioner named Annie.

A vampire action blockbuster, the new Warner Bros. Pictures release, now in theaters nationwide, put Mosaku in the orbit of Oscar-winning creatives like production designer Hannah Beachler, composer Ludwig Göransson, and costume designer Ruth E. Carter, who have all become frequent collaborators of Coogler. “I always say Ryan has the way to explore...

Sope Dirisu to Lead Akinola Davies Jr.’s ‘My Father’s Shadow’ for Element Pictures, BBC Film, Mubi
Image
Ṣọpẹ Dìrísù has landed a leading film role.

The fast-rising British actor — best-known for “Gangs of London” but recently seen in the third season of “Slow Horses” — will appear in “My Father’s Shadow,” the feature directorial debut of British-Nigerian filmmaker Akinola Davies, whose Sundance-winning short film “Lizard” was BAFTA nominated.

The film, co-written by Davies and his brother Wale Davies (who also co-wrote “Lizard”), is a co-production between “Normal People” and “Poor Things” banner Element Pictures, alongside BBC Film and the British Film Institute, and last year wrapped production in Nigeria, where it shot on location in Lagos. Rachel Dargavel, who produced “Lizard,” produces for Element. Mubi has already acquired the film for multiple territories, including North America, U.K., Ireland, and Turkey.

Variety understands that the film is semi-autobiographical and is about the relationship between a father and his two young boys over the course of a day in the Nigerian city.

Actress-producer Cate Blanchett spoke about how the newly-announced Displacement Film Fund will support displaced filmmakers and those working on stories about displaced people at a panel held at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) on Saturday.

I first became aware of Wunmi Mosaku at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. From that point on, Ive made it a priority to seek out Mosakus past work and keep up with all of her new releases, and its paid off big time.

It’s an analog horror Halloween on YouTube
Image
It’s Halloween, and YouTube is celebrating what might be the next big era of spooky content with a spotlight on analog horror.

Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen a handful of horror content creators get picked up for major Hollywood studio deals, including analog horror creator Kane Pixels, whose YouTube short films about the backrooms–a liminal space of seemingly endless, empty-yet-claustrophobic rooms with a vaguely corporate vibe–helped solidify the setting as a well-known internet phenomenon.

Kane Pixels is one of thousands of creators producing analog horror–lo-fi short films that usually involve found footage, unsettling audio, glitch imagery, and set dressings like manufactured product commercials and news reports, all used to tell an interconnected narrative that slowly pieces together.

Analog creators’ styles go back to found footage classics like the 1999 film The Blair Witch Project, and though found footage got a bit played out...

Rebel Ridge Director Reveals Whether His Netflix Hit Is Fact or Fiction
Image
Since its premiere on Netflix on September 6, Rebel Ridge has been at the top of the streamer's charts, and for good reason. Its an explosive thriller that blends sociopolitical commentary with enough tense drama and action that its certain to be regarded as a classic in the years to come, akin to Rambo or Walking Tall. This gripping portrait of a Marine veteran dealing with small-town corruption could have been ripped from todays headlines which raises the question: Is Rebel Ridge based on a true story?

Sitting down to speak with Netflixs Tudum on the day Rebel Ridge premiered, director Jeremy Saulnier explained how much of his latest movie is based on real life. While some of the events depicted in the film are grounded in reality, such as the civil asset forfeiture that Aaron Pierres character Terry Richmond experiences at the start of the movie, the overall plot for...

A 2024 Demonic Possession Horror Movie Shoots Straight To The Top Of Netflix Charts
Image
Aside from IP with mass appeal and superhero stuff, horror is about the only thing that seems to make any money at the box office these days. That's mostly due to the fact horror movies typically don't cost a whole lot to make, leaving more profit on the table at the end of their theatrical runs. But horror isn't just a reliably popular genre at the box office. It also does well on streaming, where we've actually had some pretty decent offerings in recent years.

By far the best example is "His House," which hit Netflix back in 2020 and was even better than your favorite horror movie. Indeed, the film earned a rare 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and proved that Netflix could be much more than a delivery method for middling Kevin Hart projects and instantly forgettable streaming films. Unfortunately, not all the horror that emerges on Netflix is of quite the same standard.

Tom Holland Under Fire for Not Defending ‘Romeo and Juliet’ Co-Star Against Racist Remarks!
Image
It has been known for a while that the new West End production of William Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, will be returning to the Duke of York’s Theatre from May 11 through August 3, with Jamie Lloyd directing. But, more importantly for some fans, it has been confirmed that Spider-Man star Tom Holland will be playing Romeo in the play, with Bad Education star Francesca Amewudah-Rivers co-starring as Juliet. And while all of this seems fine and dandy to us, some people are dissatisfied with the fact that Juliet will be played by a black actress and have taken to the Internet to express their anger in the most deplorable way.

The young actress has, thus, been the target of significant racial slander and abuse recently, which is an act that has to be condemned immediately. The producers, as well as some of Rivers’ colleagues, were quick to react,...

There Are Only Two Perfect Horror Movies, According To Rotten Tomatoes
Image
There is no such thing as a perfect movie.

No matter how integral a certain film may be to the history of cinema, no matter how widely beloved it might be by a mass audience, and no matter how politically and sociologically relevant it may have been to the modern world, there is always an error, a nitpick, an omission, or a production problem that can be included. No work of art is going to be 100% unassailable, largely because a wide swath of humanity will be able to see it, and no two people are going to feel exactly the same way about it.

In modern parlance, the closest critics and audiences may be able to come to a measurable consensus is the approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The way Rotten Tomatoes works: professional critics, writing for a broad gallery of approved outlets, submit a review to Rt, selecting it to be "fresh" or "rotten.

'Family' Review — This Horror Film Takes “Home Sweet Hell” to Heart
Image
We love a feature debut like Benjamin Finkel’s haunting chiller Family that immediately announces a powerful filmmaking voice. It’s not just creepy, it’s downright scary in a way that harkens back to Ari Aster’s Hereditary or Remi Weekes’ His House. My notes are littered with comparison points like Baskin, Gretel & Hansel, The Babadook, and A Dark Song that make up the film’s sobering entrapment based on the looming specter of immeasurable loss. Finkel writes and directs a visually arresting albeit cosmically untelling tale of familial despair, in which there is no such phrase as “Home Sweet Home,” and trusted relations become the monsters among us.

Netflix’s Terrifying Horror That Took the Haunted House Movie to New Heights
Image
Haunted houses are a staple of horror movies. From The Shining to Poltergeist to The Conjuring, the world of cinema is full of films about houses, apartments, and hotels possessed by ghosts, demons, and various other manifestations of the supernatural. These stories scare us for a myriad of reasons. Sometimes, the rupture of the illusion of protection within one's home is enough to bring fear to our hearts. In other instances, it's what the ghosts represent — repressed memories, the past, the future — that really terrifies viewers. More often than not, these movies produce fright just by packing some good acting and even better scary scenes. In this scenario, Remi Weekes' His House stands out for featuring everything that makes a haunted house movie spooky, and then some more.

This Rising Star Made Aubrey Plaza Fall Back In Love With Acting

There is nothing better than walking out of a Sundance screening confident that, in January, you have already seen one of your favorite films of the year. It happened to me in 2019 with Brittany Runs a Marathon. (A movie that literally inspired me to run a marathon.) Sundance 2020 gave me a trio of favorites -- Promising Young Woman, Palm Springs, and His House. In 2021, that distinction went to Mass and Coda. In 2022, I fell hard for Cooper Raiff's Cha Cha Real Smooth. In 2023, it was the Philippou brothers' first feature, Talk to Me. Now, in 2024, it's Megan Park's second feature film as a director, My Old Ass, a movie that is bound to get a theatrical release this year given Amazon MGM scooped up the worldwide rights via a massive $15 million deal.

Soon after “Saltburn” debuted on Amazon Prime, it joined the 1 million watch club on Letterboxd (the leading social media app for film lovers) and was one of the fastest to do so this year. Despite being nearly a month since its release, “Saltburn” remains in the top 3 most watched programs on the platform, film or television, in both the UK and US.

“Saltburn” reaped five bids at the Critics’ Choice Awards including Best Picture. Lead Barry Keoghan and scene-stealer Rosamund Pike contended at the Globes. Fennell’s sophomore feature merited 11 longlist mentions at BAFTA.

The Oldest Movie To Get 100% on Rotten Tomatoes

Griselda is ready for her close-up.

Today, Netflix unveiled the official trailer for its upcoming Sofia Vergara limited series, Griselda.

‘Slow Horses’ Season 3 Trailer: The Team Scrambles When One of Their Own Is Abducted (Video)
Image
When Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves) is kidnapped by rogue MI5 agents, it’s up to her fellow Slow Horse agents to save her in the first trailer for Season 3 of “Slow Horses.”

Apple TV+ released the preview on Tuesday for the British spy show, which returns with the first two episodes of Season 3 on Nov. 29. A new episode premieres every Wednesday through Dec. 27.

“I need a team of good agents, but I just have the Slow Horses,” laments slovenly senior agent Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), who never misses a chance to crack wise, even when lives are on the line.

Later in the clip, River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) calls from a besieged warehouse to tell Lamb, “There are men outside with guns. Some backup might be handy.”

Lamb’s nonchalant reply, “Well, I’m busy.”

Responds a frustrated Cartwright, “Ok, thanks, I’m sure the situation will resolve itself.”

‘The Kitchen’ could clean up at BAFTAs
Image
The BAFTAs have a soft spot for home-grown talent. Earlier this year, “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” scored four bids at the British Academy Film Awards, including Best Actor (Daryl McCormack) and Best Actress (Emma Thompson). Before that, in 2022, Adeel Akhtar snuck into the Best Actor lineup for “Ali & Ava” and Joanna Scanlan won Best Actress for “After Love.”

This pattern of Brits recognizing Brits could bode well for Daniel Kaluuya this year, who makes his directorial debut with the new Netflix drama “The Kitchen.” The film depicts a dystopian London in which all social housing has been eliminated. The focus in the story are the residents of The Kitchen, a community that refuses to leave their homes despite their struggles. At the heart of the film is Kane Robinson‘s (also known as Kano) Izi, who takes Jedaiah Bannerman‘s young boy under his wing and tries...

‘Slow Horses’ Season 3 Gets Premiere Date and First-Look Images (Photos)
Image
Apple TV+ has shared a first look at “Slow Horses” Season 3, which will premiere on the streamer on Dec. 1.

Gary Oldman returns as jaded ex-MI5 agent Jackson Lamb, who runs Slough House — nicknamed “Slow Horses” — the place where disgraced agents bide their time while trying to get back into the big leagues.

The third season, based on “Real Tigers,” the third book in the series by author Mick Herron, concerns a romantic liaison in Istanbul that threatens to expose a buried MI5 secret in London. Naturally, Lamb and his team of misfits are dragged into the case, and, per Apple TV+, “they find themselves caught in a conspiracy that threatens the future not just of Slough House but of MI5 itself.”

‘Raging Grace’ FrightFest Review – Gothic Horror Mines Suspense and Terror from Immigrant Experience
Image
Writer/Director Paris Zarcilla’s feature debut, Raging Grace joins films like His House and No One Gets Out Alive in examining the horrors of immigration from within the walls of a haunted house. Instead of ghosts from the past or creatures, though, Zarcilla spins a taut tale of gothic horror combined with personal drama that sets it apart. The focus on its characters means a slower-coiling horror story, but one that surprises with unexpected detours.

Joy (Max Eigenmann) lives in London as an undocumented Filipina immigrant. Housecleaning is the only work she can successfully find as a single mom to feisty young daughter Grace (Jaeden Paige Boadilla). To save up enough money to obtain a Visa, Joy sets her sights on affluent clients. It leads her to the sprawling estate of Mr. Garrett (David Hayman), an older man slowly succumbing to cancer. Joy’s hired by Mr. Garrett’s...

The Last Voyage Of The Demeter Let Master Monster Actor Javier Botet Live His Dracula Dream [Exclusive Interview]
Image
Even if you don't know his name, you've probably seen the work of Javier Botet. Specifically, if you've watched a horror movie in the 21st century, you've almost surely seen him. Or rather, you've seen his creatures. After scaring the pants off audiences worldwide with his terrifying work in the modern classics "Rec" and "Rec 2," Botet became horror's go-to "monster guy," sliding into the unsettling skins of ghosts, demons, zombies, aliens, and even non-Pennywise incarnations of the titular creature in "It." On the small screen, he played creatures in "Star Trek: Discovery" and "Game of Thrones." On the big screen, his credits include  "Mama," "The Conjuring 2," "Crimson Peak," "His House," "Insidious: The Last Key," and so much more. He's the century's definitive monster performer.

Born with Marfan syndrome, Botet has utilized his physical differences to pull off characters who feel like walking, actually-there special effects. He stands 6' 7" tall and he's impossibly thin,...

Despite its removal in the UK, The Power of the Dog will still remain on Netflix US for the time being. A new report reveals that The Power of the Dog, an Oscar-winning Netflix Original movie, is being removed from the platform this month in one region. Directed by Jane Campion, The Power of the Dog hit the streamer in 2021. The Smartest Horror Movies, From Get Out to Scream
Image
Horror movies are no longer just a source of cheap thrills and jump scares. The genre has always been ever-evolving, growing to include deeper plotlines, subliminal social and political commentary, and more nuance for audiences to appreciate and enjoy. In particular, there are some horror movies that are quite intelligently made.

These movies create the atmospheric dread and slow burn of horror but also force the viewers to look beyond the obvious and find the hidden meanings in the stories. Sometimes, these movies are also made differently, to depict a different kind of horror, like Jordan Peele's Get Out and Brian De Palma's Carrie. This is the best of horror that keeps fans philosophizing.

The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster Review
Image
Mary Shelley's classic 1818 novel Frankenstein has been adapted so many times in so many different formats that it's tough to imagine anyone finding a satisfying new angle on it. Writer-director Bomani J. Story doesn't entirely succeed with his directorial debut The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster, but he puts enough of his own stamp on the story to make it feel fresh and contemporary. The familiar beats take on new meaning when transposed from Shelley's upper-class 18th-century Europe to the present-day urban United States.

That's where teenage Vicaria (Laya DeLeon Hayes) lives with her father, Donald (Chad L. Coleman), in a rundown apartment complex plagued by gangs and drug dealers. Both Vicaria's mother and brother fell victim to gang violence, and Vicaria has decided that, as she puts it, "death is a disease," and she plans to find the cure. To that end, she's set up her own...

‘The Unsettling’ Review – Strong Performances Can’t Save This Lackluster Feature Debut
Image
Let’s hold a moment of silence for the presence wasted in writer and director Harry Owens’ feature debut, The Unsettling. Leading performances are admirable, but the tediously sluggish narrative is an ambiguous slog that culminates with the impact of a handkerchief slap. Owens’ themes feel indebted to Remi Weekes’ His House and Nikyatu Jusu’s Nanny — aligned with African horror tales on American soil — only to abandon subplot roots in a finale stricken by amnesia. The Unsettling is an unfortunate example of contemporary “Trauma Horror” trends and slow-burn A24 genre signatures, underselling both before rolling credits on what feels like unfinished business.

Abena (Zephani Idoko) and Kwame (Bambadjan Bamba) are a Ghanaian couple who’ve just suffered the loss of their daughter. Kwame books a Los Angeles vacation thanks to his friend Charley’s gracious deal on a quaint rental somewhere in the suburbs, away from tragic reminders of their lost child.

Director Christrian Tafdrup Didn't Realize How Relatable Speak No Evil Would Be
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Speak No Evil."

Get ready for a new golden age of horror, as directors turn to the only genre besides superhero blockbusters that still brings people to movie theaters. Horror continues to evolve beyond its apparent genre confinements into a versatile tool for diverse and nuanced storytelling. We've already had standout examples of this with 2021's "His House," and the trend continued in 2022 with a slate of fascinating horror fare that included the genre confounding "Barbarian" and Jordan Peele's "Nope" -- none of which were as disturbing, though, as "Speak No Evil."

The setup is simple: Two families meet while on a Tuscany excursion. By the end of their vacation, Danish couple, Bjørn (Morten Burian) and Louise (Sidsel Siem Koch), are comfortable enough with Dutch couple Patrick (Fedja van Huêt) and Karin (Karina Smulders) to accept an invitation to their country house in The Netherlands.

10 Horror Movies Where The True Villian Is Society
Image
Horror is one of the most popular movie genres, but recent films such as Barbarian and Nope show that horror-focused plotlines are, in fact, nothing more than a vehicle for telling a larger and more important story. In the case of these two films, the horror elements play a vital role in brutally exposing the very worst of humankind and what is known as civilization.

A24, for example, has influenced a whole wave of so-called "elevated" horror movies that are in fact just socially conscious movies, committed to scaring viewers with how realistically they can be inserted into real life. In this case, killers, entities, or intruders are overshadowed by the one and only enemy: society.

His House (2020)

Using elements of Sudanese folklore and crafting a harrowing atmosphere, His House follows a young refugee couple struggling to adapt to their new life in an English town after a mysterious entity begins to chase them.
