Image
We’ve all been there: wondering if your latest fling might have a double life…just not as a serial killer (hopefully).

Jennifer Esposito Says “a Harvey Weinstein-esque” Producer Tried to End Her Career
Image
Jennifer Esposito is recalling how “a Harvey Weinstein-esque type person” tried to end her early acting career.

The Blue Bloods actress detailed on a recent episode of the She Pivots podcast the impact this “notorious, brutal” producer, whom she did not name, had on her.

“He fired me for no reason,” she said of a past project. “He wanted someone else and he got her.” However, it didn’t stop there. Esposito claimed the producer attempted to keep her from getting any additional work in Hollywood.

“But then, like, anybody that called [and] was like, ‘Hey, I want to hire her,’ he was like, ‘Don’t hire her,'” The Boys star explained. “He said I was a drug addict, locked myself in the trailer. Never happened. I don’t do drugs. Never did. If you do, great. It’s just not me.

Emmys spotlight: Awkwafina has all the right answers in ‘Quiz Lady’
Image
Awkwafina rose to fame with her idiosyncratic, trademark comedic stylings. Then she wowed us all with her against-type performance in Lulu Wang‘s “The Farewell,” which very nearly earned her an Oscar nomination back in 2019. She delivers another quiet, subdued role in the Hulu telefilm “Quiz Lady,” which could well reap her a career-first Emmy bid for acting.

Awkwafina plays the reserved Anne, who must compete on the game show she is obsessed with alongside her loud, abrasive, estranged sister Jenny (Sandra Oh) in order to pay off their mom’s gambling debts. The result is a heartwarming comedy that is one of the sweet treats of the year. Critics loved the movie and singled out Awkafina for particular praise.

Tania Hussain (Collider) exclaimed: “While Awkwafina has shown audiences a whacky, often one-dimensional side in some of her roles like the sitcom ‘Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens,’ she is able...

Image
Frankie Muniz shared on the latest episode of “I’m a Celebrity Australia” (via News.com.au) that he once “walked off” the set of his beloved Fox sitcom “Malcolm in the Middle” when everyone else was refusing to stand up to certain people who were “controlling or rude or disrespectful.” Muniz starred on the comedy as the eponymous child genius for seven seasons, but he missed two episodes because of his decision.

“There were two episodes I’m not in. I walked off the set,” Muniz said, explaining that his actions were due to set tensions. “Everyone was so afraid to stand up when certain people were controlling or rude or disrespectful. Like they walked on pins and needles. I was so mortified by seeing people afraid to stand up for themselves, I was like: ‘Say something.’”

Dr. Sleech and Dr. Klak lead an ensemble cast of talented stars in Amazon's The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy. Stephanie Hsu shines as the cool and confident Dr. Sleech, while Keke Palmer embodies the anxious and reserved Dr. Klak in the animated sci-fi show. What’s New on HBO and Max in June 2023
Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in A Star is Born (2018)
Max’s first full month without ‘HBO’ in its rebranded title has a selection that kicks off summer 2023 in fine fashion. Three of the four iterations of “A Star Is Born,” including the most recent remake starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, are streaming on Max in June. The 1954 and 1976 films land June 1, while the 2018 version arrives June 8.

To prepare for Margot Robbie’s performance in “Barbie” come July, one could watch one of her more intense roles as Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya” (2017). For some lighter summer watches, viewers might consider “Dolphin Tale” (2010), “Grease” (1978), “Hairspray” (2007) or “Tooth Fairy” (2010).

“Magic Mike’s Last Dance” (2023) starring Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek Pinault lands at Max after its theatrical release in February this year. Another major theatrical release from 2022, “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022), swims onto the streamer starting June 7.

HBO and Max New Releases: June 2023
Image
HBO Max is no more. In its place are…HBO and Max. Warner Bros. Discovery’s big change to its premier streaming service was simply to take the “HBO” off of the name “HBO Max,” leaving just “Max.” But in announcing its list of new releases for Max in June 2023, Warner is highlighting all of the HBO content anyway. So here is everything you can expect to find on Max (including every new HBO show) this month.

Even though June 2023 is the first full month of Max’s existence without the helpful “HBO” modifier in front of it, literally all of its major original offerings are thanks to the pay cable network. June 4 sees the premiere of The Idol, the controversial TV project starring The Weeknd and written by Euphoria‘s Sam Levinson. After that, season 3 of Danny McBride evangelical comedy The Righteous Gemstones premieres on June 18. That will be...

Bowen Yang Recounts Hilarious Encounter With Jeremy Strong Method Acting as ‘Succession’ Character
Bowen Yang
Bowen Yang has a story about “Succession” star Jeremy Strong and his notorious Method acting efforts that he revealed for the first time on Wednesday’s episode of his “Las Culturistas” podcast with Matt Rogers.

According to Yang, the most recent season of “Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens” shot at the same studio as the fourth and final season of “Succession,” and “the ‘Nora From Queens’ production office was pretty close to the ‘Succession’ stages and their production office.” One day, according to Yang, Strong walked into the “Nora From Queens” office and asked where the bathroom was.

“As we famously know, Jeremy Strong is a Method actor, and at one point, Jeremy walks into the ‘Nora from Queens’ production office and says, ‘Excuse me, do you know where the bathroom is?’” Yang recalled in conversation with Rogers and guest Jon Lovett. “And then someone in the office was like,...

Jeremy Strong’s ‘Succession’ Method Acting Was So Intense That He’d Practice Asking Strangers Where the Bathroom Was

Jeremy Strong’s method acting style has been well–documented, and one story about his time working on “Succession” is an amusing glimpse into just how far he takes the process.

On the May 24 episode of the podcast “Las Culturistas,” co-host Bowen Yang, who is also part of the cast of “Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens,” told a story about Strong while filming near the “Succession” set, which he said supported “the idea that Jeremy Strong has a sense of play and irony.”

“The most recent season of ‘Nora From Queens’ shot at the same studio as this season of ‘Succession,'” he said. “The ‘Nora From Queens’ production office was pretty close to the ‘Succession’ stages and their production office, and as we famously know, Jeremy Strong is a method actor. ‘Joy Ride’ Review: Director Adele Lim Steers Her Raunchy and Hilarious Feature Debut in a Bold, New Direction
Image
Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival. Lionsgate releases the film in theaters on Friday, July 7.

After the well-deserved success of “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” it is a literal joy to see the momentum of diverse representation continue with “Crazy Rich Asians” co-writer Adele Lim’s directorial debut, “Joy Ride.” This particular Asian American-led film is making history with an all-female cast, including a non-binary actor. “Joy Ride” is a prime example of how important representation is on screen and proves that Asian American comedians can be just as funny, raunchy, and successful as their white male counterparts.

(At the SXSW world premiere, Lim joked that all they needed was an ally in the form of a rich white guy to produce their film. With his signature deep chuckle, Rogen lovingly stood back and didn’t attempt to steal the spotlight from the...

‘Eeaao’ star Stephanie Hsu gets raunchy in ‘Joy Ride’ trailer
Image
Rising star Stephanie Hsu is following up her Oscar-nominated turn in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” by going on a girls’ trip in the R-rated friendship comedy “Joy Ride,” which is coming to theaters this summer and got a new trailer on Friday.

Hsu, who plays an American star of Chinese soap operas named Kat, is part of an ensemble cast led by “Emily in Paris” breakout Ashley Park as Audrey, a woman who was born in China and adopted by white American parents, and “Good Trouble’ star Sherry Cola as Lolo, her childhood friend. Rounding out the foursome is comedian Sabrina Wu, who plays Lolo’s cousin Deadeye, a moniker they received for their dead eyes. The film follows the group on a trip to China in search of Audrey’s birth mother. Comic misadventures involving sex, drugs, culture clash, and K-pop ensue.

The raunchy film is the directorial...

Six DGA Nominees Reveal Their Secrets, from Spielberg to Kosinski
Image
At the annual pre-dga Awards nominees symposium Saturday morning, “Top Gun: Maverick” nabbed the most enthusiastic applause (after a breathtaking clip of Tom Cruise soaring in an F-14). And as usual for these panels, the “Everything Everywhere All at Once” directing duo Daniels scored the most laughs. They even had the packed audience at the DGA participate in one of their daily warm-up exercises, waving their hands and feet.

After an extended season of prolonged PR exposure, there might not seem to be anything new to learn from these accomplished filmmakers, but here are some nuggets wrested from them by DGA moderator Jeremy Kagan.

1. During rehearsals for “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Brendan Gleeson figured that his character had been suicidal during the period before the movie begins. Going forward, breaking off his friendship with Colin Farrell’s character was an essential strategy for survival, so he could be harsh about it.

‘At Midnight’ Review: Monica Barbaro-Led Rom-Com Has Less Heart Than a Super Bowl Ad
Image
Well, with all projects that soar high, one inevitably crashes back down to Earth.

“Top Gun: Maverick” breakout star Monica Barbaro quietly leads the Paramount+ rom-com “At Midnight,” an updated take on “Notting Hill” with a dash of “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” framework. Unfortunately, with the film premiering February 10, audiences would be better off watching star-studded (and better filmed) Super Bowl ads on loop for 105 minutes.

Barbaro plays Sophie Wilder, a rising actress who leads a superhero franchise with her boyfriend of five years, Adam Clark (Anders Holm, who has made a career out of playing shitty boyfriends). When Sophie catches Adam kissing someone else in his trailer, she immediately dumps him and questions how she is going to finish the latest “Super Society” superhero installment. Production moves to Mexico, where Sophie and her posse including best friend Rachel and publicist Chris (Casey Thomas Brown) try to figure out how to...

Stephanie Hsu’s Own Witchy Powers Told Her ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ Would Save Theaters
Image
It started, of course, with a love story.

When Stephanie Hsu signed on to appear in an episode of fledgling Comedy Central series “Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens” in 2019, she had just wrapped season three of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and was nearing the end of the Broadway run of “Be More Chill.” She was mostly looking for “something dumb” to do alongside Awkwafina and Hsu’s old college comedy pal Bowen Yang.

But on set, something else happened.

That “Awkwafina” episode was directed by “Swiss Army Man” filmmakers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Sheinert, known collectively as Daniels. “We fell, artistically, in love,” Hsu told IndieWire during a recent Zoom interview — so much so, the actress said, that she “followed them to LA. They called me within a week of me getting there and they were like, ‘Hey, we’re working on this movie, no pressure, but we think you’d be great for it,...

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the directing duo known collectively as Daniels, signed an exclusive five-year partnership with Universal Pictures.
