Some stories begin as traditional cases but end with startling revelations, the kind that "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" executes all too well. Then there are the thrilling, challenging titles, like Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express," which presents a huge cast of suspects harboring grudges within a kinetic setting. Sometimes, Christie challenges the brilliance of her own heroic figures, such as when detective Hercule Poirot races against time to catch a serial killer in "The ABC Murders." While every whodunnit has a distinct flavor, Christie's strengths as a writer lie in hiding the truth in plain sight and pulling off concluding twists with conviction. Netflix’s “The Witcher” puts its spin on “The Little Mermaid” in “The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep.” Set during the events of Season 1, the new animated film adapts from Andrzej Sapkowski’s short story “A Little Sacrifice” (which was itself inspired by the classic fairytale).

The film follows Geralt and Jaskier to a seaside town to investigate attacks, only to wind up in the middle of a long-brewing conflict between the humans and merpeople before it turns into all-out war. The adaptation brings some of its own spin to the tale, featuring voices that “Witcher” fans will recognize from the games and live-action series alike — as well as some newcomers.

The BBC and BritBox International have secured A-list talent for their latest Agatha Christie adaptation.

Oscar-winner Anjelica Huston has been cast in Towards Zero, potentially the highest-profile actor to appear in a BBC Christie series since John Malkovich played Poirot in 2018’s The ABC Murders.

Huston will play the aunt of lead character Nevile Strange (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). After a scandalous celebrity divorce, the British tennis star and his ex-wife Audrey (Ella Lily Hyland) make the unthinkable decision to spend a summer together at Gull’s Point, their childhood home and the coastal estate of Nevile’s aunt, Lady Tressilian (Huston).

Anybody who looked carefully at the Christmas presents unwrapped by the family in Kenneth Branagh’s autobiographically inspired 1969-set film Belfast will have spotted a copy of Agatha Christie’s The Hallowe’en Party. It was an Easter egg for the eagle-eyed, teasing which Hercule Poirot story the actor-director and screenwriter Michael Green were planning to tackle next on the big screen, after 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express and 2022’s Death on the Nile.

Green and Branagh took several liberties with The Hallowe’en Party, changing its title to A Haunting in Venice, much of its plot, and moving it from the English village of Woodleigh Common to the ghostly, mist-filled streets and canals of Venice. They wanted to venture into uncharted territory for their third Christie adaptation, and the result was an atmospheric horror-tinged treat.

Cinematic universes have certainly been a popular idea of late. While few have copied Marvel's success, many have hoped to start a similar shared movie universe where different titans of storytelling share a story. One unexpected place where a cinematic universe opportunity has been gift-wrapped for Hollywood to cash in on may be in the novels of Agatha Christie and Kenneth Branagh's adaptations of them. In 1936, Christie created her universe with her novel Cards on the Table, where four of her famous detectives were invited to one dinner party where the eccentric host was murdered.

Agatha Christie’s “The Sittaford Mystery” will be adapted as “Charlie Chopra & The Mystery Of Solang Valley” for streamer SonyLIV by renowned Indian filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj.

Set in the mountains of Himachal Pradesh, northern India, the series will follow the journey of Charlie Chopra and her quest to uncover a mystery. Bhardwaj will serve as director and co-producer and co-screenwriter alongside Anjum Rajabali and Jyotsna Hariharan. The cast includes Wamiqa Gabbi, Priyanshu Painyuli, Naseeruddin Shah, Neena Gupta, Ratna Pathak Shah, Gulshan Grover, Lara Dutta, Chandan Roy Sanyal and Paoli Dam.

Vishal Bhardwaj Pictures will produce with Priti Shahani’s Tusk Tale Films in association with Agatha Christie Limited. Bhardwaj’s film franchise based on the works of Christie was announced in 2020.

Agatha Christie’s “Murder is Easy” is set to be adapted into a two-part film by BBC One, iPlayer and BritBox International.

Set in the sleepy English village of Wychwood under Ashe in 1954, “Murder is Easy” tells the story of Luke Fitzwilliam who finds himself on the trail of a serial killer after meeting Miss Pinkerton on a train to London. She tells him about a series of deaths that have taken place in her village – locals think they are all accidental but Miss Pinkerton knows the truth. When she later turns up dead herself – while on the way to visit Scotland Yard – Fitzwilliam realizes he needs to find the killer before yet more bodies start piling up.

ITV Studios-owned Mammoth Screen (“The Serpent”) and Agatha Christie Limited (“And Then There Were None”) will produce the feature, which is set to go into production this summer.

"Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" is set to come out in theaters next week before it makes its way to Netflix in December. It's a mystery murder movie with many delightful layers to it (pun intended), and the film features a star-studded ensemble cast who play a gaggle of characters who reflect the world we live in -- for better or worse.

In the lead-up to the movie's theatrical premiere, I had the chance to talk with writer/director Rian Johnson about how he approached creating the unique suite of characters in "Glass Onion," including how he wove those characters into the film's overall story. We also talked about what whodunit sub-genres he'd love to tackle next, and how a certain cameo came to be. Read on for that discussion!

'I Was Trying To Pick People Who Have Very Different Flavors'

BritBox North America has struck a deal for three Agatha Christie adaptations and is to double its creative and investment output.

Head Emily Powers unveiled the news at this morning’s TCAs, at which point she revealed BritBox is co-producer on ITV’s The Confessions of Frannie Langton and has acquired the same network’s The Thief, His Wife and The Canoe and BBC One’s Martin Freeman-starring The Responder, both of which will be badged BritBox Originals. The BBC Studios/ITV streamer has also ordered a second season of Father Brown spin-off Sister Boniface Mysteries.

The Agatha Christie deal has been struck with Agatha Christie Limited and ITV Studios-backed The Serpent producer Mammoth Screen, and will see the trio of as-yet-unannounced shows produced over the coming years. Endeavor Content will handle international sales outside of the UK, Ireland and the Americas for all three projects.

The BBC and Amazon have signed up The Crown’s Claire Foy and WandaVision star Paul Bettany to headline the long-awaited second season of A Very English Scandal.

Deadline revealed last March that Sarah Phelps, the British scribe behind Agatha Christie adaptations including The ABC Murders and The Pale Horse, had signed up to write Season 2. The three-part second will be titled A Very British Scandal given its Scottish subject, and production is set to commence later this year.

A Very British Scandal will move on from the story of Jeremy Thorpe to become an anthology series, focusing on a new crisis that gripped the British establishment. The second season centers on a 1963 sex scandal involving Margaret Campbell, the Duchess of Argyll. During a messy divorce from her second husband, he seized images of Campbell performing a sex act on an unknown man and she became known as “The Dirty Duchess.

‘Everything is the story,’ says screenwriter Sarah Phelps. That’s why the stage directions in her scripts are so finely detailed. ‘The story isn’t just what comes out of people’s mouths, the story is what’s in the room.’

‘How high are the ceilings? Are the windows large or small? What does the air smell of? Is it cold? Is everything always slightly damp? Is there enough food on the table? Is there a fly buzzing somewhere? What can you see out of the window? Can you hear traffic? Can you hear your next-door neighbours? Is there a dog that barks incessantly?’

Without that detail, Phelps tells Den of Geek, she’d just be putting dialogue into a vacuum. Mood, weather, smell, hair, costume… it all forms the fabric of a script. But there’s more. All five of her BBC One Agatha Christie dramas are also connected through symbolic details.

The Pale Horse is the culmination of a body of work that Sarah Phelps set out to achieve more than five years ago. The British writer has gone from never picking up an Agatha Christie book to completing a quintet of memorable adaptions based on some of the iconic author’s most famous works.

Phelps’ journey began with And Then There Were None in 2015 and continued with The Witness For the Prosecution, Ordeal By Innocence and last year’s The ABC Murders, starring John Malkovich as detective Hercule Poirot. Each provided a distinctive twist on the Christie genre, with Phelps hoping to tease out unwritten meaning from prose that will be familiar to millions of readers.

Exclusive: Sarah Phelps, the British writer behind Agatha Christie adaptations including The ABC Murders and The Pale Horse, has signed up to write the second season of the BBC and Amazon’s hit drama A Very English Scandal.

Set in the world of international finance, the series shows that world through the eyes of ambitious 20-somethings struggling to secure their futures.

Variety has learned that the ensemble cast includes Myha’la Herrold (“The Tattooed Heart”), Marisa Abela (“Cobra”), Harry Lawtey (“Marcella”), David Jonsson (“Deep State”), and Nabhaan Rizwan (“Informer”).

Freya Mavor (“The ABC Murders”) also stars, as do Will Tudor (“Game of Thrones”), Conor Macneill (“Death and Nightingales”) and Ken Leung (“Marvel’s Inhumans”).

The show was filmed in London and Cardiff, the Welsh capital. Across eight installments, it follows a group of young graduates competing for a limited set of positions at a top London bank. The series and Dunham’s attachment were first reported by Variety.

Ahead of its series debut on Dec. 20, “The Witcher” has been renewed for Season 2 at Netflix, the streaming service announced on Wednesday.

The second season of the Henry Cavill-led fantasy series will begin production in London early in 2020, for a planned debut in 2021, according to Netflix. Like the first season, Season 2 will also consist of eight episodes.

“The Witcher” stars Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, and Freya Allan as Ciri. All three actors will return for Season 2.

Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich will also return for the next batch of episodes, as will executive producers Tomek Baginski, Jason F. Brown, Sean Daniel, Mike Ostrowski, Steve Gaub and Jarosław Sawko. Directors and additional cast information will be announced at a later date, Netflix said.

Hugh Laurie is working on a small-screen Agatha Christie adaptation, Variety has learned. The star of “The Night Manager” and “House” is developing a script, but which of the Queen of Crime’s books he is adapting is being kept strictly under wraps.

The project is through ITV-owned producer Mammoth Screen and is being developed for the BBC. Mammoth has made several successful Christie adaptations for the BBC, which Amazon has taken for the U.S. The latest coming down the pike is “The Pale Horse,” which was adapted by BAFTA-nominated Sarah Phelps, who won acclaim for her earlier TV version of the Christie classic “And Then There Were None.” Endeavor Content has sold those adaptations .

Laurie, who appeared in the P.G. Wodehouse adaptation “Jeeves and Wooster,” has not been confirmed to star. On screen, he parodied one of Christie’s most famous characters, Hercule Poirot, in the Spice Girls film “Spice World.

BBC One is set to premiere its Sarah Phelps-written crime drama Dublin Murders on October 14 at 9Pm.

The eight-episode series has been picked up by Starz in the U.S. and is adapted from Tana French’s first two novels in the Dublin Murder Squad crime series – In The Woods and The Likeness.

The atmospheric, psychological thriller, which was made by Euston Films, Element Pictures and Veritas Entertainment, is adapted by creator and writer Phelps, who has reimagined Agatha Christie stories And Then There Were None and The ABC Murders for the BBC.

Filmed in Belfast and Dublin, Dublin Murders stars Killian Scott (C.B. Strike) and Sarah Greene (Penny Dreadful) as detectives dispatched to investigate a child’s murder, who find a community caught between old and new Ireland.

The upcoming Netflix comedy series “Space Force” has added seven new cast members, Variety has learned.

John Malkovich, Ben Schwartz, Tawny Newsome, and Diana Silvers will all appear in series regular roles, while Jimmy O. Yang, Don Lake, and Alex Sparrow have landed recurring guest star roles. They join previously announced cast member Steve Carell, who is also the show’s co-creator and executive producer. In addition, Paul King has been tapped to direct two episodes of the series, including the pilot.

The show, which was ordered straight to series in January, is described as a workplace comedy centered around the people back on Earth tasked with creating a sixth branch of the armed services. The Man of Steel is packing a sword of steel in the first photos from Netflix’s awaited adaptation of The Witcher.

Based on the best-selling series of fantasy novels, The Witcher tells an epic tale of fate and family. Geralt of Rivia (played by Henry Cavill), a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward Yennefer (Wanderlust‘s Anya Cholatra), a powerful sorceress, and Ciri (Freya Allan), a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.

Per EW.com, the studio made the announcement at the 2019 Annecy International Animated Film Festival on Wednesday, calling original creator Aaron McGruder’s new take one “for the modern era.”

Agatha Christie’s 1961 novel “The Pale Horse” is being adapted for the small screen. The BBC has greenlit a two-part adaptation of the book, one of Christie’s later works, with Amazon Prime Video on board to co-produce and to show it in the U.S.

The drama follows events after a list of names is found in the shoe of a dead woman. One of the named people begins investigating and is drawn to the The Pale Horse, the home of a trio of rumored witches living in a small village. Word has it that the witches can do away with wealthy relatives using dark arts.

ITV-backed British producer Mammoth Screen is making the two-part series. Leonora Lonsdale (“Beast”) is attached to direct, and Ado Yoshizaki Cassuto (“City of Tiny Lights”) will produce.

Bruna Papandrea’s Made Up Stories has inked a deal with Agatha Christie Ltd to develop a new TV series centered on Christie’s iconic sleuth Miss Marple. The latest incarnation will be based on the author’s Miss Marple books and short stories, and will be co-developed by the Big Little Lies producer and Endeavor Content.

The potential series will be produced by Agl’s James Prichard and Basi Akpabio along with Papandrea. Made Up Stories’ Steve Hutensky, Casey Haver, Jeanne Snow and Janice Park are shepherding the project.

Christie’s books about the amateur detective have been in print for more than 90 years and are now in more than 100 territories worldwide. Numerous film and TV adaptations have been mounted along the way starring the likes of Margaret Rutherford, Angela Lansbury, Geraldine McEwan, Helen Hayes and Joan Hickson.

“Big Little Lies” producer Bruna Papandrea’s Made Up Stories has announced it is partnering with Agatha Christie Ltd on a new series centered on the iconic literary figure. The project will be developed together with Endeavor Content and is inspired by Christie’s 12 Miss Marple books and 20 short stories.

Despite the looming specter of Brexit, the UK production business continues to drive strong numbers — even if preliminary statistics released by the BFI today do not all constitute new records. Film and high-end TV production spend combined exceeded £3.1B ($4B) in 2018. Television saw the bigger increases, repping £1.173B ($1.53B) of the total for a 4% hike on 2017 and the highest level since the tax credit was introduced in 2013. It’s been almost eight years since the Joe Wright movie “Hanna,” which saw Saoirse Ronan transformed into a ruthless on-screen teenage killer. Now, Amazon will put a fresh spin on the story with a new TV series based on the beloved action film. Amazon released the first teaser for the series on Friday, showing the origin of this story: a baby goes missing from a hospital, presumably jumpstarting the title character’s training towards her young murderous ways.

Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman, who both appeared on AMC’s Danish import “The Killing,” will step into the roles played by Cate Blanchett and Eric Bana, respectively, in the original film. Enos is Marissa Wiegler, a powerful but enigmatic intelligence agent determined to track down Hanna (Esme Creed-Miles) after she goes off the grid. Hanna’s father Erik Heller (Kinnaman) is also trying to locate Hanna before the government can reuse her for nefarious purposes.

Lots of actors don’t enjoy the experience of watching their own movies, but that feeling must be much more intense for child stars. Take Rupert Grint, for example. The British actor known the world over for playing the Boy Who Lived’s best pal Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter movies has revealed that he can’t watch past the third entry in the franchise because of his own performances.
