When you think of an Agatha Christie whodunnit, specific murder mysteries come to mind. Some stories begin as traditional cases but end with startling revelations, the kind that "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" executes all too well. Then there are the thrilling, challenging titles, like Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express," which presents a huge cast of suspects harboring grudges within a kinetic setting. Sometimes, Christie challenges the brilliance of her own heroic figures, such as when detective Hercule Poirot races against time to catch a serial killer in "The ABC Murders." While every whodunnit has a distinct flavor, Christie's strengths as a writer lie in hiding the truth in plain sight and pulling off concluding twists with conviction. One of the more overlooked Christie murder mysteries embodying these strengths best is 1934's "Why Didn't They Ask Evans?," which keeps readers guessing up until the big reveal.

Netflix’s “The Witcher” puts its spin on “The Little Mermaid” in “The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep.” Set during the events of Season 1, the new animated film adapts from Andrzej Sapkowski’s short story “A Little Sacrifice” (which was itself inspired by the classic fairytale).
The film follows Geralt and Jaskier to a seaside town to investigate attacks, only to wind up in the middle of a long-brewing conflict between the humans and merpeople before it turns into all-out war. The adaptation brings some of its own spin to the tale, featuring voices that “Witcher” fans will recognize from the games and live-action series alike — as well as some newcomers.
Here’s your guide to the cast of “The Witcher: Sirens of The Deep,” which characters they play and where you’ve seen (or heard) them before.

Agatha Christie is the second best-selling author of all time, behind only William Shakespeare. Upon reading just one of her books, it's easy to see why her mysteries have continued entertaining audiences long after her death. She crafted compelling twists and engaging protagonists, with Hercule Poirot being her most brilliant creation, but she also wrote adventures starring Miss Marple and Parker Pyne in case anyone wanted a break for Hercule every now and then.
Christie's novels have been adapted many times over into movies, stage plays, and television shows, and she's inspired generations of mystery writers. Writer/director Rian Johnson even said he looked toward Christie for inspiration when figuring out how to take "Glass Onion" in a new direction after "Knives Out." It's easy to see why, as she was prone to playing with genres. Though her books may have largely been mysteries, there were also elements of comedy...

The BBC and BritBox International have secured A-list talent for their latest Agatha Christie adaptation.
Oscar-winner Anjelica Huston has been cast in Towards Zero, potentially the highest-profile actor to appear in a BBC Christie series since John Malkovich played Poirot in 2018’s The ABC Murders.
Huston will play the aunt of lead character Nevile Strange (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). After a scandalous celebrity divorce, the British tennis star and his ex-wife Audrey (Ella Lily Hyland) make the unthinkable decision to spend a summer together at Gull’s Point, their childhood home and the coastal estate of Nevile’s aunt, Lady Tressilian (Huston).
Revealed by Deadline several months back, the series will star Jackie Clune (Motherland), Grace Doherty (Call the Midwife), Jack Farthing (Rain Dogs), Khalil Gharbia (Mary & George), Adam Hugill (Sherwood), Mimi Keene (Sex Education), Clarke Peters (The Wire), Emmy winner Matthew Rhys (The Americans) and Oliver Award-winner Anjana Vasan (Black Mirror:...

Exclusive: Fifth Season is selling more than $1B worth of Apple TV+ content including Jason Momoa-starrer See, Nicole Kidman’s Roar and M. Night Shyamalan’s Servant at the London TV Screenings.
Prentiss Fraser, Fifth Season’s president of TV distribution, said the move realizes the outfit’s long-term strategy of landing big streamer shows that can then be sold in their second window to smaller buyers.
She said there is “little crossover” between Apple TV+ subscribers and regular linear broadcast viewers in crucial territories, which highlights the opportunities for second window. The UK, for example, is estimated to have around 2 million Apple TV+ subs – just 3% of the population.

Anybody who looked carefully at the Christmas presents unwrapped by the family in Kenneth Branagh’s autobiographically inspired 1969-set film Belfast will have spotted a copy of Agatha Christie’s The Hallowe’en Party. It was an Easter egg for the eagle-eyed, teasing which Hercule Poirot story the actor-director and screenwriter Michael Green were planning to tackle next on the big screen, after 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express and 2022’s Death on the Nile.
Green and Branagh took several liberties with The Hallowe’en Party, changing its title to A Haunting in Venice, much of its plot, and moving it from the English village of Woodleigh Common to the ghostly, mist-filled streets and canals of Venice. They wanted to venture into uncharted territory for their third Christie adaptation, and the result was an atmospheric horror-tinged treat.

As Kenneth Branagh brings his third Hercule Poirot film to theaters with “A Haunting in Venice,” fans of the Agatha Christie character might debate: Who is the best actor to ever play the mustachioed Belgian detective? And which versions simply didn’t work?
We’ve compiled a list of the most notable actors to portray the famously fussy sleuth —from Tony Randall to PBS favorite David Suchet — and ranked them with both how true they are to Christie’s vision and how enjoyable their portrayal is to audience.

7. Tony Randall (1965)
The “Odd Couple” actor’s one outing as the detective in the Frank Tashlin-directed film “The Alphabet Murders” leans very hard into comedy. The result: Despite the mustache and bald cap and an occasionally passable accent, we get very little of “the little grey cells” character we expect and far more sight gigs and slapstick.

Mes enfants! A Haunting in Venice marks the third entry in Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie movie series, finally giving us enough evidence to sift through in order to solve the present mystery: who is the best screen Hercule Poirot?
Taking into account appearance, accent, mannerisms, brilliance of mind, vanity, theatricality, humour, pathos, and of course the all-important moustache, here’s our ranking from most unfortunately disappointing version of the detective, to Poirot perfection.
A bit of housekeeping: only English-language screen Poirots have been included, so no radio, animated, international or videogame versions appear below, nor do bit-part sketch comedy Hercules. The nine actors in contention range almost a century in time, several inches in height, and vastly in their take on what makes a proper Poirot.

Netflix’s new techno chiller T.I.M. follows a career-conscious woman called Abi as she moves into a new smart home with her seemingly not-very-trustworthy husband Paul. Even as she tries to make an impact with her new employer, he decides to gift her a “Technologically Integrated Manservant” (T.I.M.) to fuss around the house and help her out while she’s busy at work. T.I.M. might be the creepiest robot version of Alexa possible!
It’s not long before T.I.M. is taking it upon himself to do more than re-up groceries and sweep the floors, becoming obsessed with Abi and having a marked distaste for her formerly wayward husband. Things soon spiral out of control in the spotless smart home while Abi is distracted by the wild demands of her boss. Can T.I.M. be stopped from doing something deadly before it’s too late?...

Cinematic universes have certainly been a popular idea of late. While few have copied Marvel's success, many have hoped to start a similar shared movie universe where different titans of storytelling share a story. One unexpected place where a cinematic universe opportunity has been gift-wrapped for Hollywood to cash in on may be in the novels of Agatha Christie and Kenneth Branagh's adaptations of them. In 1936, Christie created her universe with her novel Cards on the Table, where four of her famous detectives were invited to one dinner party where the eccentric host was murdered.
Obviously, Branagh's Hercule Poirot has already been established on film. Debuting in Murder on the Orient Express, he appeared years later in the successful Death on the Nile and is scheduled to appear in 2023 in A Haunting in Venice. The other detectives who appeared in Cards on the Table were Superintendent Battle, the detective from Christie's Seven Dials Mysteries,...

"Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" is set to come out in theaters next week before it makes its way to Netflix in December. It's a mystery murder movie with many delightful layers to it (pun intended), and the film features a star-studded ensemble cast who play a gaggle of characters who reflect the world we live in -- for better or worse.
In the lead-up to the movie's theatrical premiere, I had the chance to talk with writer/director Rian Johnson about how he approached creating the unique suite of characters in "Glass Onion," including how he wove those characters into the film's overall story. We also talked about what whodunit sub-genres he'd love to tackle next, and how a certain cameo came to be. Read on for that discussion!

‘Everything is the story,’ says screenwriter Sarah Phelps. That’s why the stage directions in her scripts are so finely detailed. ‘The story isn’t just what comes out of people’s mouths, the story is what’s in the room.’
‘How high are the ceilings? Are the windows large or small? What does the air smell of? Is it cold? Is everything always slightly damp? Is there enough food on the table? Is there a fly buzzing somewhere? What can you see out of the window? Can you hear traffic? Can you hear your next-door neighbours? Is there a dog that barks incessantly?’
Without that detail, Phelps tells Den of Geek, she’d just be putting dialogue into a vacuum. Mood, weather, smell, hair, costume… it all forms the fabric of a script. But there’s more. All five of her BBC One Agatha Christie dramas are also connected through symbolic details.

The Pale Horse is the culmination of a body of work that Sarah Phelps set out to achieve more than five years ago. The British writer has gone from never picking up an Agatha Christie book to completing a quintet of memorable adaptions based on some of the iconic author’s most famous works.
Phelps’ journey began with And Then There Were None in 2015 and continued with The Witness For the Prosecution, Ordeal By Innocence and last year’s The ABC Murders, starring John Malkovich as detective Hercule Poirot. Each provided a distinctive twist on the Christie genre, with Phelps hoping to tease out unwritten meaning from prose that will be familiar to millions of readers.

Netflix has released a trailer for Love Wedding Repeat. This serves as the feature directorial debut of Dean Craig, who viewers may know as the writer of Death at a Funeral. Craig has teamed up with an ensemble cast, led by Sam Clafin and Olivia Munn, for a new rom-com, which is something the streaming service has excelled at in recent years. Though, this one comes with a few twists along the way, based on what we're seeing in the trailer.
The Netflix original trailer kicks off with a bunch of guests arriving at what looks to be a rather fancy wedding, with a cringeworthy awkward encounter to get the party started. As is often the case, weddings can be a complex affair and this is no different. Though, in this case, things get extra messy and downright disastrous. While European actors have long been mainstays on American television, recent years have seen American stars gaining traction as the leads in international productions. Sandra Oh’s award-winning turn in “Killing Eve,” Carrie Anne Moss in “Wisting,” Anna Paquin in “Flack” and Rob Lowe in “Wild Bill” are just a few examples of familiar Hollywood faces popping up on screens around Europe.
Their inclusion raises profile domestically, but crucially, it also helps to bolster the content internationally and secure the sales that help finance the shows.
This year, there is a new crop of well-known North American actors making an appearance in European projects: BBC series “World on Fire,” which stars Oscar winner Helen Hunt, premiered in the U.K. last September and will have its American debut on PBS this April. Meanwhile, Finnish fish-out-of-water comedy “Californian Commando,” starring American YouTube sensation Kian Lawley, is looking for its international home after premiering domestically in February,...

Exclusive: Sarah Phelps, the British writer behind Agatha Christie adaptations including The ABC Murders and The Pale Horse, has signed up to write the second season of the BBC and Amazon’s hit drama A Very English Scandal.
The Radio Times reported last year that Phelps had been approached to pen Season 2, and now the writer has confirmed to Deadline she is scripting a three-part series. The BBC is on the brink of formally confirming the recommission, with Amazon expected to be involved again.
A Very English Scandal will move on from the story of Jeremy Thorpe to become an anthology series, focusing on a new crisis that gripped the British establishment.
The second season centers on a 1963 sex scandal involving Margaret Campbell, the Duchess of Argyll. During a messy divorce from her second husband, he seized images of Campbell performing a sex act on an unknown man and she...

On the surface, Rufus Sewell’s character Mark Easterbrook in “Agatha Christie’s The Pale Horse” has it all — in the most polished TV sense imaginable. It’s 1960s London, and he’s a very successful antiques dealer; he has an endless collection of trendy slim-cut suits; he lives in one of those row houses that make tourists gawp; he’s got a car James Bond would envy and a beautiful wife.
But appearances are deceiving, because he’s falling apart at his impressively tailored seams. Women he’s slept with keep dying, and the police just told him that he’s on some kind of hit list created by a very successful and mysterious and, who knows, maybe supernatural serial killer. On top of that next-level weirdness, his hair is starting to fall out in chunks. Is Mark the “pale horse” referenced in the Book of Revelation — Death, the final horseman of the apocalypse?...

Production officially began this month in the U.K. on Season 2 of Netflix’s “The Witcher,” the streaming service announced today. The series was renewed for an eight-episode second season — planned to be released in 2021 — a month before its December 2019 release.
Based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s books (which were also adapted into a popular video game series), “The Witcher” tells the story of Geralt of Rivia, the eponymous witcher, who travels from town to town accepting missions in exchange for “coin.” The first season of Netflix’s “The Witcher” proved to be a success for the streaming platform, as it was reportedly viewed by 76 million households within the first four weeks of its release. That makes for a lot of individuals getting “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher” stuck in their head.

Production on fantasy epic “The Witcher” Season 2 has commenced in the U.K., with a planned launch in 2021, Netflix announced.
The show also announced seven new cast members joining “The Witcher” for S2, including Kristofer Hivju, the Norwegian actor who played the red-bearded wilding leader Tormund Giantsbane on “Game of Thrones.”
Netflix last month claimed “The Witcher” Season 1 was tracking to be its biggest original TV series debut to date. However, that’s according to a new metric invented by the company that found 76 million member households watched at least 2 minutes of the show in the first four weeks after its Dec. 20 release.
The streamer renewed “The Witcher” for Season 2 last fall with an eight-episode order, more than a month before the freshman season hit the streaming service. The show represents “a massive new franchise that we’ll develop season after season,” Netflix chairman/CEO Reed Hastings said on the...

Rian Johnson is starting to tease Knives Out 2. Lionsgate officially announced that the sequel has been green lit last week and now everybody wants to know more about it. Daniel Craig is expected to return as Detective Benoit Blanc, but that is all that is really clear at this point. Johnson has already joked that he wants to take the sequel to space, which could use some of his research from The Last Jedi to get there.
No, Knives Out 2 is not going to space. Rian Johnson was only kidding. However, in a new interview he states that it will revolve around a new cast and a new mystery. There will be a new setting, but it won't be space. Johnson also is really leaning into his Agatha Christie inspirations and is even looking deeper into subgenres. Back in late 2018, it was reported that Warner Bros. was developing a solo movie for Zatanna. Since then, however, there’ve been no official announcements about who could helm the film or star in it. We Got This Covered has been keeping you up to date with WB’s plans for the sorceress, though, and we can confirm they’re still moving forward with it. In fact, our last update came in September, when we reported that the studio was eyeing up Emilia Clarke for the role.
According to our sources though – the same ones who said Diana will get her Golden Eagle armor in Wonder Woman 1984 and that Kevin Conroy was playing Kingdom Come Batman in “Crisis” – Clarke is no longer in the picture to play Zatanna as she’s reportedly passed on the part. Given that, they’re now looking in a different direction for the character. And...

Hugh Laurie is working on a small-screen Agatha Christie adaptation, Variety has learned. The star of “The Night Manager” and “House” is developing a script, but which of the Queen of Crime’s books he is adapting is being kept strictly under wraps.
The project is through ITV-owned producer Mammoth Screen and is being developed for the BBC. Mammoth has made several successful Christie adaptations for the BBC, which Amazon has taken for the U.S. The latest coming down the pike is “The Pale Horse,” which was adapted by BAFTA-nominated Sarah Phelps, who won acclaim for her earlier TV version of the Christie classic “And Then There Were None.” Endeavor Content has sold those adaptations .
Laurie, who appeared in the P.G. Wodehouse adaptation “Jeeves and Wooster,” has not been confirmed to star. On screen, he parodied one of Christie’s most famous characters, Hercule Poirot, in the Spice Girls film “Spice World.

Television saw the bigger increases, repping £1.173B ($1.53B) of the total for a 4% hike on 2017 and the highest level since the tax credit was introduced in 2013. Film production spend was £1.924B ($2.51B), the 2nd best score on record. The figures were released today as part of the BFI’s annual statistics report which also covers box office.

Now that the industry is past its beginning-of-the-year overviews (check out IndieWire’s Most Anticipated TV Shows of 2019), February is upon us. As the film world remains focused on last year in the lead up to the Oscars, there’s still plenty of new series on the TV side worthy of attention. As always seems to be the case when looking at the upcoming calendar for a given month, there is a wide range of offerings across streaming, broadcast, and cable. These also traverse different genres, covering both scripted and unscripted shows.
(We do this roundup of new shows pretty much every month — if you missed any of those previous picks, here are some notable TV premieres from October, November, and December of last year.)

ABC Murders is the first of these recent adaptions though to revive Hercule Poirot, one of Christie’s most famous and enduring creations. He was iconically portrayed for over a decade by David Suchet, but now John Malkovich has taken over the role, trading in Suchet’s wit and charm with somber penitence. It’s been almost eight years since the Joe Wright movie “Hanna,” which saw Saoirse Ronan transformed into a ruthless on-screen teenage killer. Now, Amazon will put a fresh spin on the story with a new TV series based on the beloved action film. Amazon released the first teaser for the series on Friday, showing the origin of this story: a baby goes missing from a hospital, presumably jumpstarting the title character’s training towards her young murderous ways.
Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman, who both appeared on AMC’s Danish import “The Killing,” will step into the roles played by Cate Blanchett and Eric Bana, respectively, in the original film. Enos is Marissa Wiegler, a powerful but enigmatic intelligence agent determined to track down Hanna (Esme Creed-Miles) after she goes off the grid. Hanna’s father Erik Heller (Kinnaman) is also trying to locate Hanna before the government can reuse her for nefarious purposes.

Lots of actors don’t enjoy the experience of watching their own movies, but that feeling must be much more intense for child stars. Take Rupert Grint, for example. The British actor known the world over for playing the Boy Who Lived’s best pal Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter movies has revealed that he can’t watch past the third entry in the franchise because of his own performances.
To promote his role in The ABC Murders, a BBC adaptation of the Agatha Christie novel, Grint spoke to Radio Times and explained that he can watch and enjoy the first couple of films, but any of the later ones he can’t because he struggles to distance himself from his turn as Ron.
“I think those early ones are Ok. More time has passed. I can detach myself a bit more from that kid. I did see Harry...
