Stephen King Shares Chilling Warning About Netflix’s Most Shocking Movie: “Beware the Last Act”
Image
Last week, I watched Messiah of Evil on Tubi (on my own recommendation). Midway through the film, Toni (Joy Bang) visits a movie theater because she’s bored in the zombie town. Sure, it spells her doom, but she does at least get to watch a pretty sick Western movie before her death. It got me thinking about how I kind of love Westerns. Yeah, they’re often problematic, but there’s a distinct thrill that few other genres of film can successfully capture. Even better than a Western? Horror westerns.

From Dusk Till Dawn, The Wind (a more recent example), and Ravenous are all classics. But when you think of horror Westerns, there aren’t many to choose from beyond nondescript zombie miners you might find in your local video store. One of the best comes with the added bonus of a Stephen King recommendation. Even better, it’s streaming now on Netflix.

Image
The video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s (read our review Here) quickly became Blumhouse Productions’ highest-grossing movie when it reached theatres and the Peacock streaming service back in October, surpassing the likes of Split, The Invisible Man, The Black Phone, M3GAN, the recent Halloween sequel trilogy, and the Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge franchises with its haul of $295 million. Bode Goes On the Offensive in 'Fire Country' Season 3, Episode 18 Promo
Image
Bode (Max Thieriot) will always take any opportunity to play the hero, and while sometimes he can be annoying, he does what needs to be done at other times. The penultimate airing of Fire Country Season 3 finds him going head-to-head with the people involved in the Oxalta deal as he and Manny (Kevin Alejandro) threaten to blow it apart. Meanwhile, "The Station 42 crew responds to a routine house fire that escalates into a dangerous situation for one of their own," reads the logline for Fire Country Season 3, Episode 18, "Eyes and Ears Everywhere." Still, in the episode airing on Friday, April 18, Jake (Jordan Calloway) considers leaving the station as tensions reach new highs. CBS released a sneak peek of the episode, previewing these storylines.

Episode 17, "Fire and Ice," found Jake contending with the fact that Station 42 is a family affair, and now that the wayward son has found his way home,...

A Teaser Trailer Has Given Fans A First Look At Five Nights At Freddy’s Two
Five Nights at Freddy's (2023)
Anyone can survive five nights. This time, there will be no second chances. Blumhouse’s box-office horror phenomenon Five Nights at Freddy’s, the highest-grossing horror film of 2023, begins a blood-chilling new chapter of animatronic terror. Based on Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 blockbuster game series, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is directed by acclaimed returning filmmaker Emma Tammi.

The first film, which opened to a record-shattering $80 million and went on to earn almost $300 million worldwide, followed Mike, a troubled young man who reluctantly takes a job as a night security guard at an abandoned theme restaurant, Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, hoping it will help him retain custody of his young sister. That fateful decision drags him into a supernatural nightmare’s black heart.

Emma Tammi will direct the film from a screenplay by producer Scott Cawthon, creator of the Five Nights at Freddy’s video game franchise. A sequel to Five Nights at Freddy’s...

The Frightening Frontier: Five Horror Westerns to Stream This Week
Image
The isolation of the Wild West, the ever-present danger of starvation, unforgiving terrain, and the rougher way of life in period settings make westerns well suited to the horror genre. Yet it’s not often that the two genres cross paths; the horror western is a niche subgenre compared to horror’s other genre pairings, like the horror-comedy.

Even the horror western’s more well known entries, like Near Dark or Ravenous, don’t appear on streaming often. Luckily, there are plenty of other entries in the horror western category on streaming, some overlooked, that capture the tension, isolation, and danger of the wild frontier.

Here’s where to stream five of them this week.

Children's films seem to be Studio Ghibli's most common brand—it's their reputation. However, the anime realm's most renowned studio is also responsible for creating some of the best classics geared toward adult audiences, some of which contain an overwhelming amount of content that would be inappropriate for eyes too young and innocent.

Ted Danson goes into spy mode and infiltrates a retirement home in Netflix’s “A Man on the Inside” — and he does it to a standout soundtrack. Comedy TV great Danson takes on the role of the mole for the Netflix series, which comes with a Netflix-budget soundtrack full of needle drops from throwback rock and folk greats like Cat Stevens, Cream and Jackson Browne, among many others. “I’m grateful to the people of the US”: Hayao Miyazaki Thanked America for 1 Movie That Starred Both John Krasinski and Emily Blunt
Image
Hayao Miyazaki creates movies for children, and most Studio Ghibli productions are whimsical creations targeted toward a younger audience. These films often have dark undertones that only adults can understand. But only a handful of these films are actually created for adults.

One such Ghibli movie is The Wind Rises, a historical drama that focuses on the career of an aeronautical engineer during the World War II era. Emily Blunt and John Karinski voiced two major characters in the film, Nahoko Satomi and Kiro Hinjo.

Hayao Miyazaki Thanked the American Audience for the Positive Reception of The Wind Rises

The protagonist of The Wind Rises is a Japanese aeronautical engineer, Jiro Horikoshi. The character is inspired by an actual engineer by the same name who designed the Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter and several other Japanese fighter aircraft designs that were used during World War II. The film shows a...

Hold Your Breath
Image
Dust gets everywhere in director Karrie Crouse and Will Joines’ hard-scrabble horror. It fills the skies, covers the furniture, and chokes the characters’ lungs. Often it clouds their judgement, too. Anyone sensing a metaphor swirling here won’t be disappointed. But those hoping for a satisfying pay-off may well be.

Based on a long-gestating script by Crouse, who also worked on TV’s similarly sand-blasted Westworld, Hold Your Breath can’t be faulted for its ambition. For their feature debut, Crouse and Joines create a convincingly brutal world that their (largely female) characters must endure.

Having worked so hard to convince us of the reality of the characters’ plight, falling back on the usual crazy-woman stereotypes isn’t just disappointing, it’s disastrous.

Sarah Paulson is typically committed as Margaret, a woman on the edge. Her husband is working away, she’s lost a child to scarlet fever, and there...

This 2018 Indie Is a Thrilling Twist on the Horror Western Movie Genre
Image
Perception is the key to horror. Someone sees something weird, something disturbing, but do other people see the same thing? This is often the crux of the matter in horror films: Trying to get people to believe that things aren't as they seem, and many a death in horror movies could be avoided if its main characters could get their friends and family, or anyone really, to see what they've seen. Even what someone perceives as scary, or true, or real can be the central building block of a horror film: Is it ghosts, or just coincidence? Is that person actually killing people and hiding them in their house, or are they just weird? Is that a demon, or just the wind?

That last is the question that one incredibly creepy, psychologically disturbing, massively underseen film from 2018 asks. The debut film for Five Nights at Freddy's director Emma Tammi, the...

All 28 Legend Of Zelda Amiibo Compatible With Echoes Of Wisdom
Image
Following in the footsteps of its predecessors, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is compatible with a wide array of Amiibo. In total, 28 of the collectible, detailed figures based on The Legend of Zelda characters are known to provide in-game benefits for Echoes of Wisdom players. As a result, both collectors and more casual owners of Amiibo could have an additional advantage from the outset when Echoes of Wisdom releases.

Amiibo can be extremely popular as collector's items alone, but their more practical side is also noteworthy. While rarely providing anything truly game-changing, Amiibo can still unlock a range of bonus items, effects, and even entire mechanics in a range of games. Naturally, this includes several Legend of Zelda games, with there being extensive Amiibo support for Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild among others. Echoes of Wisdom is simply following this tradition, although its own...

‘Hold Your Breath’ Review: Sarah Paulson Unravels in a Horror Movie That Slips Away
Image
For a film about the way isolation can start to tear us apart, it’s perhaps fitting that “Hold Your Breath” can barely hold together.

This isn’t for lack of trying on the part of lead Sarah Paulson, who throws herself into the role and comes out covered in dust for her efforts as the rubble of the film nearly swallows her whole. Neither a successful psychological thriller nor a compelling work of horror, it’s all built around the steady unraveling of a matriarch who finds herself facing a variety of threats while isolated with her two daughters. It’s a promising hook, similar to “The Wind” from 2018, though the film never gets a handle on what to do with it. All the threats bounce between being terrifyingly real or potentially more slippery, robbing the experience of oxygen as you are stuck waiting for it to find something approximating an emotional heart.

One Of My Favorite Zelda Games Might Never Be Remastered, & I'm Fine With That
Image
The Minish Cap seems a lot less likely than other The Legend of Zelda games to get a remake or remaster. The game's gorgeous pixel art stands the test of time, making a 3D remake unnecessary. A digital release of The Minish Cap on the Switch eShop would be preferable to a full remake.

The Legend of Zelda series has had a long succession of fantastic games, and a lot of these titles have made repeat appearances over the years. The eternal popularity of Ocarina of Time helped pave the way for a 3Ds remake, and The Wind Waker HD might be my favorite Wii U game despite its origins on the GameCube. Even Skyward Sword, a game with a gorgeous world and story weighed down by an imperfect structure and aggressive hand-holding, ended up nabbing a Switch remaster that cleaned up some of the pain points.

Not every game...

Why The Doors Of Stone Is Taking So Long - 3rd Kingkiller Chronicle Book Delay Explained
Image
Despite delays and setbacks, Patrick Rothfuss remains committed to finishing "The Doors of Stone" to satisfy eager fans. Personal tragedy and unexpected success have contributed to the prolonged wait for the final book in the Kingkiller Chronicle trilogy. While fans have endured a long wait for "The Doors of Stone," a new novella in the series offers hope and additional content to enjoy.

The wait for The Doors of Stone, the third and final book in Patrick Rothfuss' The Kingkiller Chronicle trilogy, has been ongoing for over a decade with fans still waiting for news of its release. Rothfuss has always planned the main Kingkiller Chronicle story - i.e. the one of how Kvothe became a "Kingkiller" and then an innkeeper - to be comprised of three books. However, with the first, The Name of the Wind, released all the way back in 2007 and the second, The Wise Man's Fear,...

Five Nights At Freddys 2 Has A Massive Villain Problem After The First Movie's Ending
Image
Five Nights At Freddy's 2 must make its villains scary again to match the success of the original movie. Humanizing the animatronics in the first film made them less sinister, posing a challenge for the sequel. Introducing terrifying villains like Springtrap and Golden Freddy could elevate Five Nights At Freddy's 2 above its predecessor.

Although Five Nights At Freddys is set to become a huge franchise, the original movie left Five Nights At Freddys 2 with a massive villain problem to overcome. Five Nights At Freddys took a long time to make it to the big screen, with illustrious directors like Chris Columbus and Gil Kenan dropping out of the project during its tortured pre-production process. Eventually, The Wind director Emma Tammi made the indie video game hit into a movie and, by Five Nights at Freddys ending, it was clear that Hollywood had a major new horror franchise on its hands.

Review: Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two on Warner Home Video 4K Uhd Blu-ray
Image
Given the weight and scope of Frank Herbert’s Dune, Denis Villeneuve’s decision to split his adaptation of the novel into multiple parts not only makes sense, but it allows for a clean division at the moment the story tips over from a narrative rooted in court intrigue and hostile power plays redolent of Old World Europe into one steeped in a lysergic blend of ecological fable and Islamic mysticism.

The first film ended with Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) escaping from a coup that left his ducal father dead and House Atreides’s hopes for control of the planet Arrakis shattered by their noble rivals, the Harkonnens. Left in Arrakis’s vast desert with his mother, Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), Paul falls in with the indigenous Fremen people, who view him as their possible messiah in a fight to regain control of their colonized planet and its invaluable spice resource.

Five Nights at Freddy’s sequel reunites Blumhouse with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop
Image
Update: At CinemaCon, Universal confirmed they’ll be releasing Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 in Fall 2025.

The original article follows:

The video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s (read our review Here) quickly became Blumhouse Productions’ highest-grossing movie when it reached theatres and the Peacock streaming service back in October, surpassing the likes of Split, The Invisible Man, The Black Phone, M3GAN, the recent Halloween sequel trilogy, and the Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge franchises with its haul of $295 million. So of course they’re developing a sequel, even if one hasn’t been officially announced yet. Five Nights at Freddy’s star Josh Hutcherson already said back in January that they were “nailing down the story” and hoping to get into production as soon as possible. Now Blumhouse founder Jason Blum has shared a picture that was taken at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the company that provided the...

‘Lovely, Dark, and Deep’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Georgina Campbell, Maria de Sá, Nick Blood, Wai Ching Ho, Soren Hellerup, Ana Sofia Martins, Edgar Morais | Written and Directed by Teresa Sutherland

Coming from the writer of recent slow-burn horror The Wind, the slightly oddly-titled Lovely, Dark and Deep, tells the story of a park ranger looking for answers from a childhood tragedy while she walks alone through the wilderness.

I guess it should be no surprise that this movie could also be called a slow burner but don’t go thinking that this means the first half or more of the film is boring or that nothing of note happens. Because Lovely, Dark and Deep grabs its viewers right from the start. But, there’s no doubt that the pace picks up towards the climax of the film and the movie leans more into horror the longer it goes on.

There are plenty of movies about people...

Turner Classic Movies Celebrates 30th Anniversary And Honors Former Host Robert Osborne
Image
Turner Classic Movies, the leading authority and definitive home of classic film, will celebrate its 30th anniversary on April 14, 2024. To honor the milestone, TCM will present on-air programming salutes featuring TCM staff who were there from the very beginning, as well as a 24-hour marathon of films with historical introductions from TCM’s first host and champion, Robert Osborne.

“How many other channels on television celebrate their anniversary? How many other channels’ fans know where they were the day a network launched?” says TCM Primetime Host Ben Mankiewicz. “I’m not sure either of those things are true without Robert Osborne. He’s the Walter Cronkite of TCM. The Johnny Carson. The Alex Trebek. With these intros of Robert’s, we’re celebrating his impact and his continued influence. Plus, as we do with the movies we show, we’ll put Robert into context. Additionally, we’ll also look back...

TCM Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary by Airing a Full Day of Robert Osborne Intros Alongside the Late Host’s Favorite Films
Image
Turner Classic Movies will turn 30 on April 14, 2024. That’s right: It’ll be 30 years since Ted Turner flipped the switch — flanked by Old Hollywood legends Arthur Hiller, Arlene Dahl, Jane Powell, Celeste Holm, and Van Johnson — right in the middle of Times Square to turn the network “on.”

Also with Turner that day was the man who’d become TCM’s longtime host, Robert Osborne, then just 61. A veteran columnist for The Hollywood Reporter, Osborne had become known as a close friend to many of the surviving stars of yesteryear ever since he was photographed kissing Bette Davis’s hand during a Golden Globes broadcast in the late ’70s. He’d go on to host the intros and outros for most of TCM’s primetime lineup for close to 23 years after that launch date, until he died in March 2017 at 84.

For so many TCM fans, Robert Osborne was the network.

Lovely, Dark, and Deep Review
Image
Plot: Years after her sister disappeared at Arvores National Park, a young woman named Lennon gets a job as an Arvores park ranger in hopes of finding out what happened to her sibling. Unfortunately for her, she does find out.

Review: Teresa Sutherland wrote the screenplay for Emma Tammi’s 2018 horror Western The Wind and was part of the writing staff on the Mike Flanagan series Midnight Mass, and now she has made her feature directorial debut with the horror film Lovely, Dark, and Deep, which she was inspired to make after hearing “real-life conspiracy theories surrounding the unusually high number of unsolved missing person cases that happen in national parks and forests”. She came up with a theory of her own… something dealing with an ancient supernatural force that still operates in these isolated places “where it still gets dark”… and delivered it in the form of a movie that has some interesting ideas,...

Soundtrack Mix #33: The Sounds of 2023
Image
Searching for and listening to movie soundtrack music for the year is an active quest of curiosity, discovery, and collage. For those fatigued and pushing through the chilliest season, I hope this mix can provide both energy and warmth, as it did to me in making it.Trends in film music over the last decade are continuing strong in 2023, particularly in the ambition of independent auteurs using complex and unusual scoring. The foundation for this mix is Angela Schanelec's beautiful and aptly titled Music, which provides both diegetic and non-diegetic moments to guide us. Samples range from The Old Oak, in which classical choral choir meets Syrian guitar and words of hope that now hit harder than ever, to a mix of sentimental strings courtesy of the legendary Joe Hisaishi. Abstract experimental sounds by two completely different kinds of artists—Harmony Korine and Thomas Newman—are mixed with sliced...
