Actor-director Gautham Vasudev Menon, predominantly known for his work in Tamil cinema, has also ventured into other languages. However, most of his highly successful films have been in Tamil. He recently directed a Malayalam movie, Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse, with Mammootty in the lead role. Having worked in the Malayalam and Tamil film industries, Gautham has gained valuable insights into their inner workings.
In a recent interview with the YouTube channel Cue Studio, he shared his observations, highlighting the differences in how Tamil and Malayalam actors approach their roles and select stories. As an example, he referenced Fahadh Faasil’s character in Kumbalangi Nights. Gautham noted that if Tamil actors were offered a role like that, it is doubtful they would accept it.

In the pantheon of contemporary Indian film protagonists, Pushpa stands tall.
He starts out as a man on the margins — a daily wage laborer with a feminine name that means “flower” and a mountain-sized chip on his tilted shoulder. But Pushpa is so smart and so fearless that he soon ascends the ranks of a sandalwood smuggling operation to become head of the syndicate and godfather of the city of Chittoor.
However, power and money don’t fuel Pushpa. More than anything, he wants respect and legitimacy, which have been denied to him since childhood because his father never legally married his mother. Pushpa might seem as invincible as a Marvel superhero. But like Amitabh Bachchan in Deewar, who has “mera baap chor hai” (“my father is a thief”) tattooed on his arm, Pushpa is also permanently scarred. It’s a potent combination.

Interview Director of the Anna Ben – Arjun Ashokan film ‘Thrishanku’ tells us why he chose to make his debut with a quirky film on elopement involving two couples and two unsuspecting uncles. When you watch a movie about a couple who decides to elope only to find out that one of their siblings also eloped the same morning, you think, this had to have happened to someone the filmmaker knew. The filmmaker did not (know anyone it happened to). The story simply developed when the writers began working on an idea that they thought had always worked with the Malayali audience – a plot involving elopement. But it couldn’t be just that. The narrative had to be fresh, something untested before. In the film, aptly titled Thrishanku, meaning neither here nor there, the couple somehow ends up on a search mission of the missing sibling, in the company of two uncles.

FilmsEach era has been witness to new waves in Malayalam cinema. But have themes and storytelling techniques ever been as novel as they are now?Image for representation / Courtesy PxfuelEight years ago, when we were watching Premam in the now-defunct Sri Visakh theatre in Thiruvananthapuram, my mother and my seven-year-old nephew both sat with gloomy faces. The seven-year-old wrapped the end of my shawl around him, choosing to drown his gloom in sleep. His grandmother stayed awake, straining to follow what the younger lot in the audience appeared to enjoy so much. It was not that she did not like the film, but that she could hardly make out what was being told. In the last decade or so, when movies in Malayalam rolled out in all different hues and forms, many things happened. Audiences, who had in the decade before that chose to stick to their television sets and give the theatres a miss,...

OpinionOnce upon a time, toxic love was extensively romanticised on screen. But today, with such narratives under scrutiny, there have been attempts to address the intricacies of toxic relationships.During an interaction for an interview, scriptwriter Sanjay (one half of the Sanjay-Bobby duo) spoke about how liberating it is to no longer see heroes slapping heroines in Malayalam cinema. There was a time when one ‘tight slap’ was mandatory in most films (especially family dramas) to ‘tame’ the heroine so that she would go back to complete the patriarchal happy family picture. But with the political correctness lens firmly fastened on films by social media, writers and filmmakers are thinking twice before sitting complacently on their conditioned belief systems. Once upon a time, love was extensively romanticised and lopsided on screen. There were many instances of toxic love being normalised, as well as celebrated, without question. But today, with such narratives under scrutiny,...

ReviewNikhila Vimal and Mathew Thomas are both able performers, and there are a few good moments in the film.CrisCredit - Facebook / Nikhila VimalFancy gadgets, clothes, and the many changes in lifestyle did not even minutely lift the narrow, nosey, and often regressive mindset of a generation of youngsters, you’d conclude after two hours of Jo & Jo. The new ‘young’ film on the block is, on the surface, about sibling rivalry – enacted by two able performers, Nikhila Vimal and Mathew Thomas. But the core of it appears to be the very Malayali tendency to poke your nose in someone else’s business, moral police them and constantly cook up theories about the things they might be doing. The film is themed on a little tapped subject – that of sibling rivalry, as opposed to the love of an ‘ettan’ or ‘chechi’ shown in many Malayalam films – but ends up being an amateur,...

ReviewIt is remarkable that Mammootty, after four decades of headlining an industry, still has no qualms in turning into the hateful, despicable character and doing it really well.CrisMinutes pass before you begin to wonder why everything seems so creepy. It is only a dad and his little son on the screen, living their remarkably boring life. Dad is annoyingly disciplined, and the boy is rightly panicky. By now you are used to the concept of men with Ocd, wanting the shoe at the right place in the rack, wanting no bit of cloth outside a hamper. But the creepiness comes from the extraordinary performances of the two persons on the screen — Mammootty proving by the slightest of gestures and movements how under-utilised he most often is, and the young Vasudev Sajeesh Marar, an immensely talented child. Puzhu is going to be a treat, you know from those very early introductions.

“There’s a Shammi in every one of us.” This was said by Shyam Pushkaran, the writer of “Kumbalangi Nights” about the villain of the film. Anyone from Kerala or the whole India itself who watches the film will agree on that. “Kumbalangi Nights” shows a villain who has been portrayed as the image of masculinity among the common man, who thrives on his patriarchal power for decades in cinema. But that is just the tip of the iceberg; the film has a lot to say through a simple story that leaves you with a smile at the end.
Kumbalangi Nights is about the lives of four brothers Saji (Soubin Shahir), Bobby (Shane Nigam), Bonny (Sreenath Bhasi) and Franky (Mathew Thomas) from the fishing hamlet of Kumbalangi and how their lives change with the entry of some characters into their lives. The four brothers live in a...

Tnm StaffMahesh Narayanan's C U Soon, released directly on Amazon Prime Video, has been getting rave reviews from viewers. Of special significance is the fact that the film was shot in under 20 days with an iPhone camera and the entire story is told through screens. These factors have piqued the curiosity of viewers and as a consequence, the film has attracted several people who may not have watched a south Indian — let alone Malayalam — film before this. Even film critics who don't usually review south Indian films have been lavish in their praise of C U Soon. Although there are four big film industries in the south, Indian cinema is often equated to Bollywood. Among those who haven't watched south Indian films, there exists a perception that "down south", the films made are all loud, unrealistic and grossly exaggerated.

MollywoodThese women actors don't have a lengthy filmography, but their short body of work is impressive.Sowmya RajendranAnna Ben's Kappela, which recently released on Netflix, has generated quite a lot of discussion on social media.
