Los Angeles Team Mentoring hosted its annual Soiree on Thursday, October 5th, 2023, at the Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills.

The foundation was celebrating their 31st year mentoring at-risk middle school youth while honoring the National Football League Players Association (Nflpa) and Entrepreneur, Mentor, Bestselling Author, Discovery’s Undercover Billionaire star Glenn Stearns. The annual Soiree is the organization’s signature fundraising event, which ensures hundreds of volunteer mentors are able to provide critical mentoring services to over 1,000 at-risk youth for an entire school year.

The black-tie gala was attended by Impact Award honoree Glenn Stearns & wife Mindy Stearns, Dr. Bassey Akpan manager of player wellness at Nflpa, former professional football player Marvel Smith, actor Kurt Caceres, and featuring an exclusive live performance and appearance by Jay Leno.

Amplify Pictures, the independent television studio behind HBO’s Emmy-winning “100 Foot Wave,” has made a pair of hires. It has tapped Rachel Eggebeen as its chief content officer and Colin King Miller as its chief operating officer. The veteran executives will take founding partnership roles alongside Amplify Pictures CEO Joe Lewis.

“It’s a time of expansion,” Lewis told Variety in an interview. “We’re growing our team and becoming more global.”

At the same time, Amplify has sold a minority stake to Great Mountain Partners. It is understood that the deal values Amplify at $50 million. The funding will be used to back more production of original series of both the unscripted and scripted variety. Great Mountain Partners previous investments include the Oscar-winning film studio A24, branded content producer Rise Studios and the Vuelta Group, a European film studio.

The Critics Choice Real TV Awards unveiled winners for its third annual editions.

There were three ties among this year’s winner’s pool – RuPaul’s Drag Race” (VH1) and The Great British Baking Sho” (Netflix) tied for Best Competition Series, The Masked Singer (Fox) and The Voice (NBC) tied for Best Competition Series: Talent/Variety.

Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives (Food Network) and The Oprah Conversation (Apple TV+) tied for Best Structured Series.

RuPaul’s Drag Race (VH1) was the only series to take home multiple awards, also winning for Best Ensemble Cast In An Unscripted Series.

VH1’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race” led all nominees as the Critics Choice Association and nonfiction producers’ organization Npact announced on Wednesday the nominees for the third annual Critics Choice Real TV Awards. The org also announced it would posthumously honor late “Jeopardy” host Alex Trebek.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” landed five awards, including best competition series, best ensemble cast in an unscripted series, female star of the year for Michelle Visage, and both male star of the year and best show host for RuPaul Charles.

Programs next in line with three nominations included “Queer Eye” (Netflix), “Stanley Tucci: Searching For Italy” (CNN), “Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi” (Hulu), and “Top Chef” (Bravo). Netflix led all outlets with 22 nominations, while the Critics Choice for some reason decided to combine HBO and HBO Max’s tallies, even though they are technically separate outlets, and together they received 14 nods.

While the first day of spring technically belongs to March, everyone knows that it kicks into high gear in April. To celebrate the changing of the seasons, Hulu is finally bringing back its signature original series for April 2021.

Season 4 of the multiple Emmy award-winning The Handmaid’s Tale premieres on April 28. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen June and her dystopian world. In fact, it’s been so long that our own world decided to endure its own dystopian pandemic in the meantime. Hopefully this series’ return will mean we can keep our political and social collapses on television where they belong.

Aside from The Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu isn’t brining much else to the table in terms of originals this month. Thankfully, the one other original that Hulu has in store for April sounds completely righteous. Sasquatch, the latest docuseries from the Duplass brothers producing team, will cover exactly what the title promises.

Discovery has set a premiere date for “Undercover Billionaire,” a reality show in which real-life billionaire Glenn Stearns adopts an alias and attempts to start a million-dollar company — without using any of his existing wealth or connections.

“With just $100 in his pocket, Glenn will ditch his private jet and yacht and head to Erie, Pennsylvania, where he will assume the alias ‘Glenn Bryant’ — a regular guy who’s spent the last 30 years in corporate America but always dreamed to have a business of his own. To make things fair, he won’t use his real name, contacts or wealth,” Discovery said in a statement. “Along the way, he’ll share practical tips and the knowledge on how to build a fortune from his three decades in business.
