I was just thinking the other day that it had been a while since I’d reviewed a western and then along comes Blood in Them Hills a tale of outlaws stolen gold, hostile Apaches and a Wendigo.
In a cabin outside of town a badly injured man begins to act strangely as his daughter pulls a tooth out of his infected shoulder. In the midst of this Apaches attack the cabin and he announces “I’m awake!” before attacking his family.
Back in town the Christmas festivities are taking a dark turn as a mob surrounds the jail looking to lynch one of the prisoners Mack for allegedly killing one of the townsfolk. Far from being afraid, he talks tough as the doctor stitches him up.

Spring is in the air, and so is horror! Between Baghead, The First Omen, Abigail, the werewolf-themed Blackout, and the French movie Infested, we have plenty of options when it comes to scares.Though it's not technically horror, Alex Garland’s Civil War is certainly going to terrify us. Dev Patel’s going to kick ass and take names in Monkey Man, and so is Henry Cavill and his ragtag 1940s crew in Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, Bill Skarsgård in Boy Kills World, and, of course, the crew of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver.

Ahhh.. seems just like yesterday that Film Independent President Josh Welsh was on stage at the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards announcing the kickoff to our year-long #AD30 celebration, commemorating three uninterrupted decades—pandemics, strikes and recessions be damned!—of Film Independent Artist Development programs.
Of course, in reality that announcement was one full awards cycle ago, back when the Past Lives, Earth Mamas and May Decembers of the world were but a flicker in eyes of industry plaudit prognosticators. But the story of #AD30 has only grown in the interim.
Look no further than the program that started it all, Project Involve, which today announced the 27 new Fellows joining as part of its 2024 cohort—the 31st overall such cohort in a long line of inclusive, up-and-coming industry players. Project Involve alumni include Lulu Wang (Expats), Linda Yvette Chávez (Flamin’ Hot), Jomo Fray (All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt), Effie T. Brown...

The mark of an actor’s career, I think, is what extent their filmography can reflect the time they’re working. Matthew Modine is a prime case: we can point, first and most easily, to leading a Stanley Kubrick film, a title for which there are fewer living holders than men who’ve walked on the moon; there’s one of the all-time biggest box-office disasters; supporting roles for Christopher Nolan, Robert Altman, Oliver Stone; and aiding auteurs Abel Ferrara and Alan Rudolph as a star. This makes especially appreciable the Roxy Cinema’s retrospective The Many Faces of Matthew Modine, running Friday through Sunday with five films: Ferrara’s The Blackout, Rudolph’s Equinox, Cutthroat Island, Birdy, and his own feature If… Dog… Rabbit…
Having long admired Modine’s screen presence, I was happy to speak with him about this retrospective. But it engendered a longer, deeper conversation about...

Superman's newest superpower is his most dangerous: anyone who learns his secret identity will immediately die. Lex Luthor removed knowledge of Superman's identity from the world using a powerful psychic, with deadly consequences for those who discover it. Superman must now protect his secret identity more than ever before to keep both his friends and enemies safe, as their lives are at risk if they learn his identity.
There are few heroes in comic books that have as many superpowers as Superman, but his newest one might be his deadliest. He has just about everything that someone could need: super speed, super hearing, super strength, flight, heat vision, cold breath, and more. But surprisingly, none of these powers are nearly as dangerous as the latest power that was forced on him by Lex Luthor. Anyone who learns Superman's secret identity, by any means, will almost immediately die.

The following post contains spoilers about "Killers of the Flower Moon."
The horrors inflicted upon the Osage people during a string of ghastly murders throughout the 1920s are among the worst atrocities ever committed against Indigenous Americans. Anyone familiar with U.S. history during the Old West will know that's saying a lot. Based upon the 2017 book by David Grann, director Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" uncovers the systematic infiltration of nefarious white men into the lives and affairs of the Indigenous Osage Nation after vast deposits of oil were found on their land. The enormous wealth the Osage possessed led to a string of mysterious deaths that were always deemed accidental or never investigated in the first place.
As the murders piled up, men like Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Bill Smith (Jason Isbell) married into Osage families and waited patiently for their share of the...

Submarine Entertainment is picking up worldwide sales rights on Chris Skotchdopole’s feature directorial debut “Crumb Catcher.” The move comes just ahead of the darkly comic thriller’s Fantastic Fest world premiere.
Skotchdopole wrote, directed, edited, and produced the movie and Submarine Entertainment, a notable sales and production company, will launch sales out of the festival, which runs from Sept. 21 to Sept. 28 at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, Texas. “Crumb Catcher” was described by Fantastic Fest programmer Anna Bogutskaya as a “chamber piece that melds extreme anxiety with the worst salesmanship imaginable.” The film follows a newlywed couple held captive by an entrepreneur desperate to finance his outlandish invention with a blackmail plot.
With ten years of experience working with Glass Eye Pix, the New York independent genre production outfit led by horror auteur Larry Fessenden, Skotchdopole has amassed numerous credits on several films, including working as the cinematographer on Fessenden’s “Depraved,...

There are few Transformers more famous than Soundwave and it's almost all thanks to the original cartoon. In that series, he was portrayed as more robotic than the other Decepticons; his voice (provided by Frank Welker and a vocoder effect) was electronic and his speech patterns were mechanical. Since Soundwave was less expressive than his castmates, he was less likely to indulge in the show's slapstick humor or suffer humiliation. These qualities added up to an air of coolness and mystery. On a show with paper-thin characters, Soundwave's lack of personality actually made him more memorable.
Since Soundwave has been part of "Transformers" from the beginning and is so well-remembered by fans, why was he excluded from the 2007 "Transformers" movie? He's in the sequels, but he's not a player you wait to take off the bench.
Well, his absence wasn't an oversight. "Transformers" writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman wanted...

The good news is that Disney and Spectrum are still talking. That’s according to Sports Business Journal's John Ourand, who says that talks have elevated to the highest level, as Disney CEO Bob Iger and Charter president Chris Winfrey spoke over the phone this past weekend about the carriage dispute that’s erupted between their companies.
The dispute has led 19 Disney-owned networks to be dropped from Spectrum cable plans across the country, including ABC, ESPN, FX, and more. Talks are ongoing, but with the college football season having already started and the NFL kicking off this week, both sides risk fans losing out on must-watch games if a deal can’t be reached soon.
As of now, it appears Spectrum has more leverage than cable providers have had in past carriage disputes. That’s because the pay-tv provider seems ready to make good on the threat to leave cable...

Larry Fessenden's horror credentials are unquestionable. He's both starred in and directed films from deep within the genre, and he's worked with the likes of Guillermo Del Toro and Ti West in his decade-spanning career. His love for classic movie monsters, in particular, is well documented at this point. His 2019 reimagining of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein in the form of the film Depraved was particularly well-received, and his black-and-white, '90s indie classic Habit is a brilliant vampire movie.
With a Dracula-style movie and a Frankenstein movie under his belt, it was only a matter of time before Fessenden took on the snarliest of all the classic monsters, the wolf man. Enter Blackout, Larry Fessenden's moody, introspective take on the werewolf legend.

Get ready to delve into The Music of Heatmiser. The Portland band best known as Elliott Smith’s pre-solo career springboard has announced a new rarities compilation arriving October 6th via Third Man Records, and a demo version of the track “Lowlife” is out now.
Heatmiser initially distributed The Music of Heatmiser — then a 6-song cassette — at local record stores and shows to promote the band before they released their 1993 debut LP, Dead Air. According to co-founding singer-guitarist Neil Gust, this longer package — featuring 23 additional demos, live tracks, rare versions, and previously unreleased songs — came together thanks to drummer Tony Lash.
“Tony found a bunch of forgotten recordings and started mixing them and sending them to me,” Gust said in a statement. “We were struck by the freewheeling energy of the band; you could hear how much fun we were having. In 1992 we could barely afford the studio so it...

In the world of horror, few creatures have captured the imagination quite like The Werewolf. From the classic Universal Monster movies to the 80s hits so good even the Academy Awards had to take notice, the werewolf has always been a symbol of the wild, untamed nature within us all. Larry Fessenden, a name synonymous with indie horror, has unleashed his own take on the werewolf mythos with Blackout which recently celebrated its World Premiere at the 2023 Fantasia Film Festival.
In Blackout a Fine Arts painter finds himself tangled in a hairy situation, convinced that he's a werewolf causing chaos in a small American town during the full moon. That's right, Fessenden has painted a picture where the full moon isn't just for romantic nights but a time for unleashing the beast within.
“I've always loved werewolves […but] The werewolf story is always a little harder to get right”
Fessenden's fascination with werewolves is no secret.

Like Depraved, a modern retelling of Frankenstein, Blackout finds writer-director Larry Fessenden once again toying with classic monster tropes. The new film focuses on a tortured artist, Charley (Alex Hurt), whose name is just a few letters removed from “Chaney.” Charley is dealing with a nasty case of werewolfism, which is the same affliction that plagued Lon Chaney Jr.’s character, Larry Talbot, in 1941’s The Wolf Man.
Where Depraved was a commentary on modern warfare, Ptsd, and the pharmaceutical industrial complex, Blackout narrows its focus to the business of being a modern white liberal in a small town. Charley is concerned about the environment, and he’s disturbed at the racist groupthink stoked by a local real estate magnate, Hammond (Marshall Bell), who happens to be his former boss and the father of his ex-girlfriend, Sharon (Addison Timlin). At one point, Charley asks a former co-worker what Hammond has...

Lights, camera, howls! Larry Fessenden's latest indie gem Blackout recently celebrated its World Premiere at the 2023 Fantasia Film Festival. An expansion of Fessenden's contemporary remix of the Universal Classic Monster stories (a welcome choice with the failed Dark Universe project on the back burner for the foreseeable future), Blackout stars Alex Hurt as the cursed hairball, with supporting performances from genre icon Barbara Crampton (also appearing at Fantasia in Joe Lynch's Suitable Flesh), Rigo Garay (The Leech), Jeremy Holm (The Ranger), and Marshall Bell (Total Recall) as small-town America's asshole extraordinaire.
Charley Barrett is an artist and struggling alcoholic who is desperate to get his life in order before the next full moon. Perpetually 24 hours from leaving town for good, Charley attempts to make amends with the loved ones he's hurt through his addiction, and atone for the corporate sins of his father that threaten to destroy his hometown.

Filmmaker and horror stalwart Larry Fessenden has dedicated an extensive career to independent horror. Fessenden continues to deliver unique interpretations of familiar movie monsters, from the vampiric Habit to a modern Frankenstein retelling with 2019’s Depraved. His latest, Blackout, brings a contemporary horror drama centered around a Wolfman.
Blackout, which just debuted at Fantasia International Film Festival (our review), follows small town artist Charley (Alex Hurt), a tortured man whose drinking binges blur with his sneaking suspicion that he might likely be a werewolf.
After the film’s premiere, Bloody Disgusting spoke with the multi-hyphenate writer/director/editor/producer about his love of monsters, his old-fashioned werewolf, and what he’d love to tackle next.
Blackout may be modern in storytelling, but its werewolf harkens back to the bipedal Wolfmen of the ’30s and ’40s. That was always Fessenden’s vision.

Indie horror icon Larry Fessenden is back in the director’s chair with Blackout, a film about the pain of addition and becoming something you don’t want to be. Having tackled vampires in 1995’s Habit and Frankenstein’s monster in 2019’s Depraved, Fessenden finally has his werewolf movie in the solid creature feature Blackout. Opening with a classic stalking sequence following a pair of adventurous lovers in a field, Blackout introduces us to the werewolf terror immediately as the monster tears the canoodlers to shreds before the opening credits roll. We quickly move on to meet Charley Bartlett (Alex Hurt), the above-mentioned monster, only he’s currently in human form and obviously in search of absolution for his many sins. He’s determined to not only set things right...

Film Independent is currently in the middle of a Matching Campaign to raise support for the next 30 years of filmmaker support. All donations make before or on September 15 will be doubled—dollar-for-dollar up to $100,000. To kick off the campaign, we’re re-posting a few of our most popular blogs.
Among other consumer benefits, one major upside to the increasing niche-ification of popular culture has been the continuing emergence of esoteric micro-genres of film and TV. Twenty years ago, you might not necessarily think of “horror documentaries” as its own subgenre. Sure, there were documentaries that maybe fell a little more on the creepy/unsettling side, but it was rare that a nonfiction film would be tailored to appeal to a horror-first genre audience. Now, of course, things are different. In recent years, a robust tradition of terrifying nonfiction films have emerged, many as terrifying – or even more eerie – than their traditional narrative counterparts.

For horror movie buffs, Larry Fessenden is a name that should ring quite a few bells. The prolific director and actor has made his mark on the creature feature scene, taking the classic Universal Monster formula and flipping it on its head to create stories that are both subtle and intellectual.
His latest film, Blackout, is a werewolf story that promises to show a gentler, more human side to the creature. Which is funny, according to Fessenden; although he makes horror movies with more of an intellectual bent, as a moviegoer, he confesses that he'd really just rather see the cool monster show up and bare its fangs.
"I'm literally a kid, I just wanna see the monster and get on with it."
Blackout Succeeds with Little Support
The synopsis for Blackout reads as follows:
"In a small upstate New York town, artist Charley Barrett (Alex Hurt) checks out of...

Blackout
Talk about werewolf films and most people expect a lot of spurting blood, growling and gnashing of teeth in a horror tale which they’re unlikely to take seriously. Larry Fessenden’s latest work, Blackout, is a very different beast. It follows a troubled artist (played by Alex Hurt) as he returns to the little town of Talbot Falls after many years away, hoping to make things right with the community and, in particular, with his ex. haunted by what he believes to be happening on moonlit nights which he can barely remember, Charlie is contemplating drastic action. It’s a thoughtful, introspective tale with a lot to say about society at large.
As a longstanding admirer of Larry’s work both behind and in front of the camera, I was delighted to get to meet him as he prepared for the film to screen at Fantasia 2023. i began our conversation.

Werewolf fans rejoice! Fantasia 2023 hosted the premiere of the new film from horror legend Larry Fessenden and it is not to be missed. Blackout brings all of the blood, fangs and carnage that you want out of a werewolf film, while also incorporating the thoughtful contemplation and real-world connection that Fessenden is known for. Much like his early film Habit, Blackout fixes its eye on a mainstay of horror cinema and finds a way to remix the genre staples while at the same time adding his own fingerprints to the narrative.
As the film opens, Charley (Alex Hurt) is checking out of the small motel that has been his temporary home for several weeks. He is in the middle of a separation from his wife Sharon (Addison Timlin) and everything else in his life seems to be at a point of change. We follow along as Charley meets up with...

As with Depraved, writer-director Larry Fessenden returns to the world of classic, Universal-inspired monsters in Blackout. Whereas that title brought the mythos of Frankenstein’s monster (and its ample room for social commentary) into the present-day, this latest update shifts focus towards the so-called “wolfman.”
How does knowing he potentially killed innocent people affect Charley (Alex Hurt)? How can he keep pretending his life is simple and his love (with Addison Timlin’s Sharon) pure when a cloud of uncertain violence looms above the three-day nightly windows he cannot remember each month? Because while his actually being a werewolf is presented with enough ambiguity to make the truth part of the intrigue, Fessenden pulls no punches insofar as making certain we know Charley is at fault. He sees glimpses of his victims’ faces and, as an artist, paints them to try severing their hold. So while he might not be...
