Before Superman: What Other Movies Has David Corenswet Been In?
Image
James Gunn’s Superman is about to hit the theaters, and fans are excited to see David Corenswet’s iteration of the character. The actor will follow in the footsteps of Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, and Henry Cavill to play the titular role in the Dcu. While the odds were stacked against him earlier, Corenswet has proved himself to be amazing in the role from the promotional materials.

Before he put on the Superman suit, Corenswet appeared in a bunch of movies like Pearl and Look Both Ways and TV shows like Lady in the Lake. He played lead roles in Ryan Murphy’s Netflix shows, Hollywood and The Politician. He also starred in the HBO limited series, We Own This City, from the writers and executive producers of The Wire.

‘The Beanie Bubble’ Trailer: Elizabeth Banks and Zach Galifianakis Revolutionize the Toy Industry
Image
Remember when Beanie Babies broke the Internet? Well, the iconic toy is now landing its own biopic for audiences to see what it truly takes to build a plush stuffed animal from scratch.

Apple’s “The Beanie Bubble” charts the rise and fall of the ingenious collectible stuffed animals, with Elizabeth Banks and Zach Galifianakis playing the real-life toy titans who invented the craze. In a twist of nostalgic toy-driven fate, “The Beanie Bubble” opens in select theaters the same weekend as “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.”

Per the official synopsis, why did the world suddenly treat stuffed animals like gold? Ty Warner (Galifianakis) was a frustrated toy salesman until his collaboration with three women grew his masterstroke of an idea into the biggest toy craze in history.

“Succession” star Sarah Snook portrays Warner’s wife (and one third of the love triangle alongside Banks) while “Blockers” breakout Geraldine Viswanathan is a...

Zach Galifanakis to Star in ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Live-Action Film
Image
The “Lilo & Stich” live-action remake is assembling its Ohana. Zach Galifankis has been cast in the upcoming Disney+ film, IndieWire has confirmed.

Details of Galifanakis’ character is being kept under wraps, so it’s unclear if the “Hangover” star will be playing a live-action character, or if he’s voicing a CGI character such as the lovable Stitch himself. Because the original animated film centered primarily on Native Hawaiian characters, Galifanakis will likely be playing either a new character for the film or one of the aliens in the cast, like Stitch, antagonist Captain Gantu, or a member of the iconic odd couple Jumba and Pleakly.

The beloved original animated film focuses on Lilo, a young girl struggling after the death of their parents. When she encounters Stitch, a bizarre dog-like creature created by an alien scientist to be the ultimate destructive force, Lilo adopts the stray and brings it...

Lilo & Stitch Live-Action Movie Casts Zach Galifianakis
Image
The Lilo & Stitch live-action remake has made a huge casting announcement with the addition of The Hangover's Zach Galifianakis. The upcoming film from Marcel the Shell with Shoes On director Dean Fleischer Camp is the latest live-action update to classic animated works from the Disney canon. It will bring to life the story of the 2002 film, which followed a young Hawaiian girl named Lilo (Daveigh Chase) who adopted what she thought was a dog that turns out to be a destructive genetic experiment gone wrong that has escaped from a facility in outer space.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Zach Galifianakis has been cast in a lead role in the Lilo & Stich live-action film. The actor, who is best known for his roles in the Hangover film franchise and the oddball comedy series Baskets, hasn't held a role in a live-action feature since 2019's The Sunlit Night. While the role itself is unspecified,...

Ever is surprised to discover that she hasn’t signed up for homework and history lessons, but instead for a summer-long free-for-all the locals and other students call “Loveboat.” It quickly lives up to its name when Ever finds herself trying not to fall for two attractive,...

Optimistic New Yorker Frances’ journey of self-discovery begins, like so many others, with a single step. Then, before a summer of love in The Hamptons can soothe her scarred psyche, her boyfriend dumps her too. Leaving her to ride the Jitney home alone, hair still soaked with the water from his decadent pool.

Neither her single bunk in the cramped apartment her family shares nor the fragment of studio space her dad allots her leave Frances (Jenny Slate) room to grieve. Her sister just got engaged, her parents’ marriage is falling apart and her dreams are crumbling. So she heads to Norway to work as an artist’s mentee, to sleep in a caravan at the edge of a fjord and paint a...

13 New Movies Released On Demand This Weekend
Image
Though movie theaters still remain closed in most parts of the world, it’s not like there’s been a shortage of new content to keep folks entertained. And you can mostly thank the various streaming services for that.

Be it Netflix’s The Old Guard delivering action-packed thrills, Hulu’s Palm Springs bringing the laughs or Prime’s 7500 offering up a gripping watch, there’s been a ton of big new films on the small screen lately that have been making up for the lack of theatrical releases. But it’s not only the streamers who are bringing the goods.

On demand has been pretty hot for fresh titles, too, and there are a whopping 13 new movies that released via Amazon Video, iTunes, Vudu, etc., this weekend. Be it Lucy Hale’s enjoyable romantic comedy A Nice Girl Like You, intriguing sci-fi flick Archive or Donnie Yen’s action-comedy Enter the Fat Dragon,...

‘The Sunlit Night’: Jenny Slate & Gorgeous Artic Cinematography Can’t Save This Clunky Film

“It’s lazy,” a critic in “The Sunlit Night” implores. “It’s not lazy, it just doesn’t work,” says another. “Well, it leaves me cold and wanting more,” adds a third, who is obviously upset with the painting in front of them. Unfortunately for director David Wendt, they could also be discussing and reviewing the Arctic Norway-set “The Sunlight Night,” which offers no warmth and leaves you yearning for something more substantial.

Norway Out: Wnendt Paints a Blank Slate in Slight Romantic Drama

Expectations seemed reasonably high for The Sunlit Night, the English language debut from provocative German director David Wnendt pairing him with the carefree Jenny Slate, a comic virtuoso who works best when digging out the melancholic marrow of life’s funny bone. But perhaps it was a project cursed by a fish out-of-water trifecta, its director and star both strangers in a strange land, whilst scribe Rebecca Knight Dinerstein makes her screenwriting debut adapting from her original source novel.

Whatever the case, the unassuming narrative relies on familiar tropes of an artist finding their voice amidst quaint and quirky scenarios with Slate relying upon the familiar aspect of the socially awkward persona who succeeds because of and not despite her authenticity.…...

New Movies to Watch This Week: ‘Father Soldier Son’ on Netflix, ‘Dirt Music’ on Demand
Image
July 17 is the weekend that Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” was supposed to open, but in the face of the coronavirus outbreak, the world has folded back on itself like a scene from one of the director’s mind-benders. As infection rates hit new highs in the U.S., theaters postpone or reverse their plans to reopen, and movies that planned to follow “Tenet” scramble to later spots on the calendar.

That leaves streaming platforms and on-demand services to once again pick up the slack, offering a genre-spanning selection of new offerings. There are showbiz documentaries — including one spotlighting Broadway legend Kaye Ballard, and another about animation mavens Spike and Mike — as well as Sundance-blessed indie offerings such as “Dirt Music” (with Garrett Hedlund) and “The Sunlit Night” (starring Jenny Slate).

On Netflix, there’s “The Best Years of Our Lives” meets “Boyhood” in the decade-spanning, New York Times-produced documentary “Father Soldier Son,...

Jenny Slate in The Sunlit Night (2019)
“The Sunlit Night” Is Too Covered By Quirk
Jenny Slate in The Sunlit Night (2019)
Quirky dramedies can be an absolute delight. Especially when the actor or actress in the lead role can react properly to the quirk on display, the possibilities for quality cinema are strong. Independent cinema is littered with examples of this. Unfortunately, the indie film world is also filled with efforts that just don’t work, allowing the quirk to overtake the actual story on display. Opening today, The Sunlit Night is sadly closer to that sort of a production than one that fully works. A solid performance in the central role from Jenny Slate does paper over some of the issues, but the final result is just too uneven to actually recommend. The movie is a dramedy that eventually develops into a romance. Frances (Slate) is an aspiring painter struggling to make it in New York City. Her parents (both working artists) and sister live in a small apartment in Queens,...

‘The First Time’ With Jenny Slate
Image
Jenny Slate joined Rolling Stone‘s The First Time to talk about her upcoming feature film The Sunlit Night — her debut as a producer — as well as some of her earliest memories performing comedy.

“The first time I performed improv was at camp, where they would do the thing where you put a bunch of objects in a pillowcase, and then you pick one out, and it’s like, ‘A bottle of shampoo!'” she recalled. “And you have to make up a thing, a skit, right then, as part of an evening activity.

The Sunlit Night Review: Jenny Slate Charms in Superficial Arthouse Romance
Image
The Sunlit Night is an arthouse romance oversaturated with eccentricity. Jenny Slate stars as a struggling Brooklyn art student who takes an apprenticeship in remote Norway. The quirky characters, settings, and stylized asides look fanciful but don't amount to much. A paper-thin attempt at depth detracts from the fleeting humor. The Sunlit Night is a superficial journey of discovery.

Frances (Jenny Slate) watches as her professors savage her artwork as uninspired. She trudges home to a cramped one bedroom Brooklyn apartment; shared with her bickering parents and sister. It doesn't help that her parents are successful painters. Or that her sister is in law school and engaged. Frances is desperate to escape her cluttered life. She eagerly accepts a residency with a Norwegian artist (Fridjov S&#225heim) in the country's distant Lofoten Islands.

Frances' surly host has one job for his new apprentice. She has to paint the inside of a barn yellow.

The Sunlit Night Review: Jenny Slate Brings Pathos to Norway-Set Adventure
David Wnendt in Zones Humides (2013)
The usual rom-com formula is as follows: the lead breaks-up with their significant other, escapes to a far-flung place to pick up the pieces, and finds true love waiting. We’ve seen it countless times and always sigh when the fateful yet unlikely happily-ever-after proves itself to be another co-dependent Hollywood victory where romance trumps independence. So it’s hard to look past a film daring to travel beneath such fairy tale surfaces and get at the heart of what those types of escapes truly provide. They’re about new beginnings, introspection, and self-reflection. They’re about having the time and space to be ourselves without the weight of expectations thrown atop our shoulders by friends, family, and bosses. The love that’s waiting for us thousands of miles away is our own.

We are the ones who make ourselves happy. Another’s ability to coax a smile out of...

Jenny Slate Heads to Norway in First Trailer for The Sunlit Night

After breaking out with his debut Wetlands, director David Wnendt returned to Sundance Film Festival with his English-language debut The Sunlit Night, starring Jenny Slate, Zach Galifianakis, Alex Sharp, and Gillian Anderson. The film follows Slate’s character as a woman who has reached a dead end in her life in America and ventures to a Norwegian island for an art residency that becomes much more strange than expected.

Following its premiere last year at Sundance, the adaptation of Rebecca Dinerstein’s novel is now set for a release next month, and the first trailer and poster have landed. Unfortunately, reviews for this one weren’t too positive across the board, but for Jenny Slate fans, it’s nice to see her in another leading role after Obvious Child.

Jenny Slate Goes to Norway in Wacky Film 'The Sunlit Night' Trailer
Jenny Slate in The Sunlit Night (2019)
"It's amazing to be your apprentice." Quiver Distribution has unveiled the official trailer for The Sunlit Night, which originally premiered at last year's Sundance Film Festival to some of the worst reviews of the entire festival. Set between New York City and the far north of Norway, The Sunlit Night follows American painter Frances and émigré Yasha as an unlikely pair who find each other in the Arctic circle. Frances has arrived to jumpstart her career while Yasha has come to bury his father in the land of the Vikings. Together under a sun that never quite sets, they bury the past and discover the future, and family, they didn't know they had. Jenny Slate stars as Frances, along with Alex Sharp, Fridtjov Såheim, David Paymer, Gillian Anderson, and Zach Galifianakis. While there is some strange quirkiness to parts of it, this film is a completely unfunny disaster. But it's...

German production outfit DETAiLFILM and Paris-based Cinenovo are teaming with Us companies Beachside Films and Anonymous Content on Before The Spring, a drama based on the life of Mohamed Bouazizi.

Bouazizi was a Tunisian street vendor who set himself on fire in protest of his treatment by officials; the act of defiance was one of the catalysts for the Tunisian Revolution and the wider Arab Spring.

Egyptian-British filmmaker Lotfy Nathan is making his narrative feature debut on the project. Nathan’s documentary 12 O’Clock Boys,...

Jenny Slate Gets Cozy With Hunky Artist at Sundance Film Festival
Jenny Slate at an event for 30th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards (2015)
Jenny Slate is officially off the market. The Obvious Child star and the potential love interest made their official debut as a couple at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah on Monday night. Slate and the lucky guy, who is named Ben Shattuck, were spotted together at the premiere of her new film, The Sunlit Night.  A source tells E! News that Jenny and Ben looked "very cozy at The Vulture Spot." It's been nearly a year since the comedian split from on-again, off-again boyfriend Chris Evans. She and the Captain America star broke up for the second time in March 2018, after dating for nearly two years. At the time, neither of the celebs...

David Wnendt in Zones Humides (2013)
‘The Sunlit Night’ Review: Jenny Slate Shines In Messy, Muted Love Story — Sundance
David Wnendt in Zones Humides (2013)
By the time things in Frances’ life have really gone topside — her boyfriend has dumped her, her little sister is marrying a guy her family hates, her parents are separating, she has nowhere to live, and that’s without even mentioning the leeches — the would-be painter is literally begging for scraps.

“Give me the thing that nobody wants!,” she implores an unimpressed New York City curator who previously tried to offer Frances another painting residency that nobody wanted, a desperate plea that lands Frances at the top of the world (a nightless Lapland in high summer). There, stuck with a gruff boss and a mostly boring apprenticeship — painting a decrepit barn sunshine yellow — Frances tries to find herself.

She’s not alone, as David Wnendt’s “The Sunlit Night,” while clearly centered on Frances’ journey, has teed up another lost soul to join her in the beautiful, alienating Norwegian environment.

Jenny Slate in The Sunlit Night (2019)
Sundance Film Review: ‘The Sunlit Night’
Jenny Slate in The Sunlit Night (2019)
In “The Sunlit Night,” Rebecca Dinerstein shows that she can write funny breakups, awkward Jewish family gatherings, and sweet-and-sour wedding speeches. One doubts she had to go all the way to the Norwegian Arctic to develop that skill, but at least her pilgrimage paid off in the form of the kind of personal writing sample — a twee running-from-romance-only-to-find-it comedy set at that far Northern remove — that, while unlikely ever to be produced, might easily score her work on the staff of a sitcom.

Except her screenplay (first published as a novel) did get produced, and now exists as the kind of movie that Sundance audiences love (the opening-night crowd laughed in all the right places) but hardly anyone goes to see in general release. Stranger still, it has been directed by German director David Wnendt — whose last film, “Wetlands,” was an outrageous celebration of the many things that can be...

Sundance: Jenny Slate Talks Her Most Surreal Festival Moment
Jenny Slate at an event for 30th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards (2015)
Nearly five years ago, Jenny Slate and author-screenwriter Rebecca Dinerstein enjoyed an Ephron-esque meet-cute that spawned the Sundance film The Sunlit Night. Slate was on the phone with her mother while walking through a Brooklyn park. Dinerstein had recently seen the Slate star vehicle Obvious Child and gave the actress a silent round of applause. Slate, reluctant to interrupt her mother, blew Dinerstein a kiss. "Later, she tweeted at me, 'You blew me a kiss in the park. Would you ever read a galley copy of my novel?' And I was like, 'Yeah, sure,'" Slate recalls. The ...

The Crown: Gillian Anderson to Play Margaret Thatcher (Report)
Gillian Anderson is poised to stick with Netflix for her next big role.

According to The Sunday Times, the actress is set to star as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher during The Crown Season 4.

Given that The Crown Season 3 is yet to be given a premiere date at Netflix, it means viewers eager to see the show's take on the Iron Lady will be in for a long wait.

The show's third season was famously delayed as it switched up its cast because of the time difference between seasons.

Olivia Colman will replace Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II, while Tobias Menzies replaces Matt Smith as Prince Philip.

Ben Daniels will play Antony Armstrong-Jones, starring alongside Helena Bonham Carter’s Princess Margaret.

The Crown Season 3 will reportedly kick off in the year 1963 and will cover some big events in British history.

Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis Movie Shooting in Secret for Netflix
Sure, why not! Netflix is shooting a Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis movie in secret. You might not think that the concept would work on the big screen. But half the time we think that, take the Lego Movie for instance, it ends up being the opposite of true. This could be a great comedy classic. A masterpiece. Though, saying it's hitting the big screen might be overstating it.

Between Two Ferns: The Movie is being shot as a Netflix original streaming movie. And it will probably be about 80 minutes in length. The concept of the show has Zach Galifianakis sitting between two ferns with a guest that he's not necessarily nice too. There have been some big gets on the Funny or Die show. Brad Pitt once stopped by, and it doesn't get any bigger than President Barak Obama.

Production on Between Two Ferns is already under way,...
