Exclusive: Japanese major indie Gaga will launch sales on 3D animated feature Ryoma! The Prince Of Tennis at the upcoming Filmart in Hong Kong (March 15-18).

The movie is the first 3D computer-generated title that the company has produced and distributed in its 35-year history. Gaga entered the animation business in 2016 and has worked on titles including the Annie nominee Okko’s Inn by Kitaro Kosaka and Seven Days War by Yuta Murano, both of which screened in competition at Annecy, to date.

The Prince Of Tennis is a 20 years’ long-running comic series about middle-school tennis prodigy Ryoma developing friendship and tennis techniques through intense matches against powerhouse players. Netflix has been on a roll with its movie programming lately. Though Covid-19 lockdowns are beginning to ease in many countries, they continue to provide countless hours of much-needed entertainment for people unable to enjoy a typical summer and here’s the best of what arrived this week.

Top of the list is Spike Lee’s new joint Da 5 Bloods. This war drama finds a group of Vietnam veterans returning to the jungle in order to track down some treasure they buried long ago. Lee’s on a hot streak after the Oscar-winning BlacKkKlansman and critics and audiences alike are calling this one of his best movies ever. Now that I’ve seen it, I can finally agree with everyone tipping star Delroy Lindo for awards season success next year.

Also added this week was 2018 Japanese animated movie Okko’s Inn, which walks in the footsteps of Studio Ghibli classics like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke.

Water, as a conduit for romance and spirituality, has been en vogue as of late in Japanese feature animation. Entries in this wet subgenre, where young characters grapple with torrential rain and oceans to dazzling effect, as well as life lessons submerged in nature-based metaphors, include Makoto Shinkai’s box office hit “Weathering With You,” Ayumu Watanabe’s upcoming “Children of the Sea,” and Masaaki Yuasa’s mermaid tale “Lu Over the Wall.”

Returning to that liquid magic, Yuasa, who produces films through his own company Science Saru, makes a new splash with his third feature in three years “Ride Your Wave,” written by Reiko Yoshida, who also penned recent anime standouts “Okko’s Inn,” “A Silent Voice,” and “Liz and the Blue Bird.” Notwithstanding the saturation of H2O-fueled teen movies, the director-screenwriter pair filter a love story through an oddball premise addressing heroism and perseverance with robust notes of graphic originality.

The battle for tonight’s marquee Best Feature prize pits three mega-grossing studio sequels — Disney’s Frozen 2, DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 4 — against Laika’s Golden Globe-winning Missing Link and Netflix’s first original toon feature Klaus. Frozen 2 arrives with a leading eight nominations.

Just how will tonight’s awards factor into a certain trophy show happening in two weeks? Well, since the Academy Awards’ Best Animated Feature category was launched in 2002, 13 of the 18 winners of the Annies’ top feature prize – and five of the past seven – went on to claim Oscar gold.

The Disney sequel “Frozen II” and Laika’s stop-motion “Missing Link” led all films in nominations for the 47th Annual Annie Awards, the most comprehensive awards show devoted strictly to animation.

Those two films each received eight nominations in the 13 feature film categories. Netflix’s “Klaus” received seven nominations, while “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” “Toy Story 4” and the French indie “I Lost My Body” received six each.

In the Best Feature category, the nominees were “Frozen II,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” “Klaus,” “Missing Link” and “Toy Story.” In the Best Indie Feature category, which was created in 2015, the nominees were “Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles,” “I Lost My Body,” “Okko’s Inn,” “Promare” and “Weathering With You.”

Indie distributor GKids has added “Another Day of Life” to its slate of animated Oscar contenders with a fall theatrical release. Based on famed author/journalist Ryszard Kapuściński’s novel, and directed by Raúl De Lafuente and Damian Nenow, the political drama documents the horrors of the Angola civil war of 1975 by mixing graphic, mo-cap style animation (a more advanced “Waltz with Bashir”) with archival footage and interviews.

Kapuściński takes a deep dive into the chaos of the civil war (following Angola’s independence from Portugal), driving south into the heart of the conflict to find the isolated rebel leader Farrusco (a legendary figure that evokes Kurtz from both “Heart of Darkness” and “Apocalypse Now”). The Goya Award winner and Cannes entry made its U.S. premiere at last year’s Animation Is Film festival.

“Funan,” a French-Luxembourg-Belgium production, follows a young woman and her husband separated from their four-year-old son as a result of the Khmer Rouge’s forced exile from their village into internment camps.
