Independent film studio Angel Studios has raised over $10 million in just five days through an online investment campaign. The Los Angeles-based company uses an innovative crowdsourced model to decide which films and television shows to support.

At the core of this model is the Angel Guild, an online community of over 360,000 entertainment fans from around the world. Members of this community collectively vote on projects for Angel Studios to produce and distribute. “We believe the crowds have a better sense of what stories people want to see than big movie executives,” said Jeffrey Harmon, co-founder and chief creative officer of the studio.

This approach has already met with commercial success. The film “Sound of Freedom” about human trafficking generated $250 million globally after receiving Guild approval. Other hits include the biblical drama “His Only Son” and faith-based biopic “Cabrini,” though the latter lost money despite earning $20 million on its $50 million budget.

His Only Son is a biblical epic movie available for streaming, rent, and purchase on multiple platforms. Crowdfunded with lesser-known actors, the film offers a thought-provoking take on a story from the Bible. The “Sound of Freedom” co-writers are sounding the alarm on child trafficking, and refuting that the film is a right-leaning “faith-based” feature.

“Sound of Freedom” director/writer Alejandro Monteverde and co-writer Rob Barr penned an op-ed for The Hollywood Reporter addressing the QAnon conspiracy theories surrounding the Jim Caviezel-starring film, which is based on real-life child trafficking rings.

“It has been difficult to watch controversy and partisanship distract, even a little, from the deep intention of our work: to use the power of film to bring awareness to the reality of child trafficking,” their piece read. “Way back in 2015, when we began researching and writing this project, we told each other many times, ‘If there’s one issue that can unite everyone, it’s ending child trafficking.’ We still believe that.”

Not everyone scored a ticket to “Barbie” this weekend, and that included Paul Schrader, who shared on Facebook over the weekend that all showings of the Gerwig-directed movie in his area were sold out Saturday and Sunday. Schrader reported back on Sunday that he saw “Sound of Freedom,” Angel Studios’ child-sex-trafficking drama starring Jim Caviezel, instead. And Schrader joins the many audience members turning out for the film, which in just over two weeks of release has now grossed $124 million.

The “Master Gardener” and “First Reformed” filmmaker shared his thoughts on what’s perceived by some as a conservative, faith-oriented movie. Caviezel stars in the true story as government agent Tim Ballard, who embarks on a mission to rescue children from sex traffickers in Colombia.

Angel also reported that its “Pay It Forward” promotion grossed an additional $2,679,000 thanks to patrons buying gift tickets for others for future use. Under normal industry practice, that revenue should be counted as they are used. With that among added, the day’s take for the film exceeded $14.2 million, which would make it #1 for the day.

Faith-based film has grown in quality and stature over the last several years. The unexpected box-office surprise and even at times critical acclaim for faith-based movies such as Heaven Is for Real, His Only Son, and Jesus Revolution, as well as the worldwide success of the streaming series The Chosen, has elevated a very niche genre of film to a new level of mainstream acceptance.

There’s George Foreman the boxer and George Foreman the grill. The Sony biopic out this Friday offers a different George. “I want to spread the word of God,” says Foreman (Khris Davis) in the trailer for “Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World.”

It’s a production from faith-based Sony Pictures’ label Affirm Films. Its first film in 2008, “Fireproof” starring Kirk Cameron, grossed $33 million on a $500,000 budget. To date, the (mostly domestic) global theatrical gross for Affirm titles stands at $520 million — $400 million more than the films’ total production costs.

Directed by George Tillman Jr. and with Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker in a supporting role, “Foreman” may represent the biggest Affirm budget to date. (One source lists it at $34 million.) Prior Affirm budgets topped out at $20 million. It’s also got one of Affirm’s biggest releases, with 2,575 theaters.

Opening prospects are unclear.

For the third week in a row, The Super Mario Bros. Movie held the top spot of the box-office weekend by a significant margin. This weekend, it bested the second-place film by $34.7 million.

Adding $58.2 million over the weekend, The Super Mario Bros. Movie brought its three-week total to $434.3 million. Meanwhile, debuting in a distant second place was Evil Dead Rise with $23.5 million. In an even further third-place finish was newcomer The Covenant which debuted with $6.3 million over the weekend. These two debuts pushed John Wick: Chapter 4 from third to fourth place this weekend where it added $5.8 million to bring its five-week total to $168.9 million. Climbing a spot and re-entering the top five was Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves with $5.4 million. This resulted in the film’s overall four-week tally reaching $82.2 million.

Air dropped a spot to finish in sixth-place this weekend with $4.9 million, giving it a three-week total of $41.3 million.

Easter hasn’t always been a great time to release movies, compared to March when the advent of spring break for many schools has made it an ideal spot for studios to release their family films, outside the usual summer and holiday school breaks. But that’s no longer the case thanks to the various box office records set this weekend by “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”

The film debuted with $5.5 million last week, and fell by 41% this weekend. March really has been great at the box office, beginning with Michael B. Jordan’s “Creed III,” followed by two out of three franchise sequels that outperformed their original movies. This week saw the release of a new version of a popular role-playing game, as Paramount released “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” into 3,855 theaters on Friday.

The movie, starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Hugh Grant, Regé-Jean Page, and more, came into the weekend with terrific reviews after a SXSW Film Festival debut, and then Paramount gave the movie a number of previews leading up to its official Thursday opening. In fact, the movie racked up $5.6 million in those early previews, including $3.5 million on Thursday, and that number added up to a fantastic $15.3 million for Friday.
