Although its audience score on the platform is a Verified Hot 90%, this has not translated to success in theaters.

Upcoming on the distribution front is Paul W.S. Anderson’s In the Lost Lands, a fantasy pic in which he stars opposite Milla Jovovich, which Vertical releases on February 28.

An all-new sequel to the 2020 spy comedy film My Spy, the latest action-comedy film follows CIA agent J.J., who teams up with his protg (and now stepdaughter) Sophie, to accompany her on her school trip to Italy, where they get involved in preventing a catastrophic nuclear attack aimed at the Vatican. My Spy: The Eternal City is directed by Peter Segal, a filmmaker-actor best known for making films like Anger Management, 50 First Dates, and Get Smart, and who also directed the first film.

At just 15 years old, actor Chloe Coleman’s list of co-stars already includes Hollywood legends and A-listers.

Appearing in blockbuster productions such as “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “65” and “Gunpowder Milkshake,” Coleman has shared the big screen with Adam Driver, Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Hugh Grant, Michelle Yeoh and Paul Giamatti to name a few. The 2024 action-comedy film on Amazon Prime, My Spy: The Eternal City, brings back wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista to the screens as he reprises his role as a toughened spy with a soft heart from 2020’s My Spy film. The plot this time has the protagonist, JJ, travel to Italy with his adopted daughter Sophie as part of her school’s choir trip. But the spy soon has to get back to his old ways when the CIA receives a serious threat and a close friend’s family is kidnapped. Overall, The Eternal City lacks content and style and might be adequate only for a light, mindless dose of entertainment.

Plot: When Sophie’s high school choir is selected for an Italian tour culminating in a performance for the Pope in Vatican City, JJ sees this as an opportunity to bond with his new stepdaughter, so he volunteers to help chaperone the group through the Venetian canals, across Florence’s renowned bridges and into Rome’s most historic sites. Instead he finds that he and Sophie have become unwitting pawns in a terrorist plot that could end the world as we know it.

Review: My Spy originally debuted at the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic after being pulled from release in August 2019. With mediocre reviews, the Dave Bautista-led action-comedy was solid family entertainment when audiences sorely needed new things to watch. Four years later, Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman have reunited for a sequel that is bigger and better than the original but still nowhere near as good as it should be.

The James Bond jetpack sequence in “Thunderball” (1965) was a cheesy-awesome thing that was like, “Whoa! The future will be jetpacks!” “My Spy the Eternal City” opens like a Bond film, or maybe a movie whose goal is to make the “Kingsman” series look weighty. Dave Bautista’s JJ, a former Special Forces soldier turned CIA operative, is on a private plane, where he’s playing bodyguard to a teen idol named Ryan (Bill Barratt). Out of the blue, he’s attacked by the flight attendant. As they go at each other with sharp objects, a helmeted figure zips through the sky in a jetpack, placing a bomb on one of the plane’s windows and blowing a hole in its side; everyone comes tumbling out, and a plunging-to-the-earth scuffle ensues.

Several years have passed since their first unexpected partnership, and their dynamic has changed significantly. Now a teenager, Sophie no longer sees JJ as the heroic spy who saved her life. With JJ taking a desk job at the agency, Sophie has lost interest in the secretive world that once drew her in.

Instead, Sophie’s focus has shifted to the typical priorities of a young woman her age. She wants more freedom from JJ’s protective oversight and the chance to experience life outside of constant espionage training. Their fracturing relationship faces an important turning point during a school trip Sophie and her classmates take to Italy. Unbeknownst to the students, nefarious forces are also traveling abroad on a dangerous mission.

As in the original film, Bautista and Coleman prove adept at blending humor and heart.

My Spy: The Eternal City lacks comedy and struggles to balance action, sentimentality, and humor effectively. The film features improved production values but falls flat in terms of comedy, despite a talented cast. My Spy: The Eternal City explores the evolving relationship between JJ and Sophie but fails to bring genuine laughs to the table.

My Spy was a theatrical release relegated to streaming with little fanfare because of Covid lockdowns. The generation that grew up with such gems like The Game Plan, The Pacifier, and The Spy Next Door may have been prone to share the Dave Bautista-led movie with their children or younger relatives, but the former athlete/action star meets precocious child actor formula wasnt enthusiastically welcomed in 2020. This was also the sentiment shared about My Spy, and yet it got a sequel with My Spy: The Eternal City, an unnecessary follow-up that struggles at every turn.

Back in January 2020, Australians were the very first moviegoers to see My Spy when it was released in theaters. In the following months, it was supposed to slowly roll out globally. However, plans changed significantly when Covid-19 hit and many theaters worldwide shut their doors. This family-friendly spy comedy starring Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman was set to face major release delays internationally until it was picked up by Amazon Prime Video. It was soon released in the USA in June 2020 and was a massive hit with audiences, ultimately becoming the third most-watched SVOD title of that year, respectively.

Decorated filmmaker Pete Segal is no stranger to comedies or sequels, but My Spy The Eternal City is far from his best of either. Writers Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber (alongside Segal) uphold the calcified pillars of Hollywood sequels, but their continuation hardly presents like an upgrade. What was once an undercover romantic comedy about a peewee spy in training and her hulking protector is now a generic espionage comedy filled with exhausting stereotypes. The cast welcomes tantalizing additions, the film relocates overseas, and theres a stronger sense of danger which would mean something with tighter execution. Yet My Spy The Eternal City deceptively lacks ambition despite European cityscapes and recognizable celebrity faces, failing to reassure that Prime Videos My Spy has franchise legs.

Former wrestler Dave Bautista has the chops, as they say, for comedy. He was terrific in the ensemble of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, playing a claptrap-spouting men’s rights influencer. But there’s not much going on in his performance here, headlining a charmless action comedy as a CIA tough guy in overprotective dad mode. Bautista’s delivery looks practically comatose at points, like a grizzly bear with tranquilliser dart hanging out of its neck, just about to thud to the ground, face bewildered and semi-paralysed.
