Dave Bautista’s best and most remarkable role after transitioning from his prolific professional wrestling career to one of the most interesting actors in Hollywood’s entertainment industry has been none other than that of Drax in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A Guardians of the Galaxy member, the actor did an epic job in bringing him to life.

However, that character has run its course now – at least for the actor, he has – and it’s time for Bautista to shine in a different role other than Drax the Destroyer now that he has already said yes to returning to the franchise. Thus, here are three characters that would fit the 56-year-old actor if the Russo Brothers decide to bring him back through Avengers: Doomsday.

If there’s one thing that spy movies always drive home, it’s that having kids always complicates the job. But, some of those movies also show you that bringing kids into the world of spies can also be pretty funny at times.
Take “Back in Action,” now streaming on Netflix, for example. The film centers on two CIA operatives who take an opportunity to fake their deaths once they learn they’re having a baby. Years later, they now have two kids, and because of those teenagers, their cover is accidentally blown.
What follows is a very complicated, but cool family adventure. And, after seeing it, you might be looking for more movies like it. Well, you’ve come to the right place.
Here are five family-friendly spy movies like “Back in Action” that you can watch next.

Red One has broken a streaming record that may prove that Dwayne Johnson's career is undergoing a major shift. Johnson is a star who is very familiar with shifts in his career, as he originally became famous as a WWE wrestler under the moniker "The Rock." After taking on a role as the antagonist in the 2001 adventure sequel The Mummy Returns, he began to transition toward acting, and he has become a major movie star with many blockbuster movies and franchises under his belt, including the new Jumanji movies, the Fast Saga, the Moana franchise, Rampage, and more.
However, his new Christmas action-comedy underperformed both critically and commercially. On Rotten Tomatoes, it earned a dismal 30% score from critics, which ties it with 2005's Be Cool as the eighth worst-rated Dwayne Johnson movie ever. Although its audience score on the platform is a Verified Hot 90%, this has not translated to success in theaters.

Dave Bautista has become a well-established actor over the course of a 18 year acting career, and his chance to lead The Killer's Game turned out to be a low point in one specific area. The former wrestler got his big break by joining the Marel Cinematic Universe as Drax, and that role gave him more opportunities to join other franchises and standalone projects. The 2024 action movie represented the continued evolution of his career, as it put him back in the lead role of an action movie, one that could launch a new franchise after The Killer's Game's ending.
Bautista is no stranger to being part of franchises and projects that are successful overall. He's been in franchises - Dune, Blade Runner 2049, and Bond, and he started his own franchise with My Spy. He's also made an effort to work with Rian Johnson, M. Night Shyamalan, and other notable directors.

Just in time for a Halloween binge, Hysteria! is now available on Peacock and, having seen most of the series already, I can definitely say that it's worth your time. An 80s-set horror story that doesn't feel like it's focused on nostalgia, Hysteria! has a great cast with great chemistry, and it really does a great job of building up its characters, including its supporting cast, which features Bruce Campbell as the chief of police in a town where satanic panic takes hold. During a recent press day, I caught up with Bruce Campbell, where we talked about his new role and his experience with satanic panic in the 1980s.
Synopsis: "When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the “Satanic Panic” of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a...

The Killer's Game includes a recognizable cast of characters from notable action movies around star Dave Bautista. The Guardians of the Galaxy and Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran spent years working to get the 2024 action movie off the ground. Directed by J.J. Perry, Bautista's The Killer's Game focuses on an assassin who orders a hit on himself after a terminal illness diagnosis, but he is then forced to fight for his survival after he discovers he was misdiagnosed.
From the moment the movie begins until The Killer's Game's ending, the movie is built around Bautista in the lead role and his character's new romantic relationship. Along the way, the movie introduces multiple characters from the assassin underworld that Joe Flood has been part of for 20 years. The Killer's Game cast some significant stars to play these various roles, whether they were ultimately allies or foes for Bautista's hero.

The Killer's Game has broken a record for star Dave Bautista by hitting a box office low during its opening weekend. The new action-comedy movie, which also stars Sofia Boutella, Pom Klementieff, Terry Crews, Scott Adkins, and Ben Kingsley, follows a hit man (Bautista) who orders a hit on himself after receiving a terminal diagnosis, only to learn that he was misdiagnosed, at which point he is forced to fight for his life against multiple assassins. The Rotten Tomatoes score for Dave Bautista's latest action movie, The Killer's Game, has dropped. Directed by J.J. Perry, the film stars Bautista as Joe Flood, an assassin who attempts to stop a hit he placed on himself after learning that a terminal medical diagnosis was not true. Sofia Boutella, Terry Crews, Scott Adkins, Marko Zaror, Pom Klementieff, and Ben Kingsley also star in the movie.
Many reviews have come out for The Killer's Game on Rotten Tomatoes, and the current score isn't very good. At the time of this writing, the movie sits at a 33% approval rating based on 15 reviews. Currently, no critical consensus has been written either, which doesn't bode well for the current reception the movie has been getting. However, the score is likely to fluctuate once more reviews get tabulated.
The Killer's Game Continues A Mixed 2024 for Dave Bautista His Previous 2024 Action Film Was Also Poorly Received.

Box office preview: Will ‘Speak No Evil’ keep ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ from its first place repeat?
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” may have given the fall movie season a serious jumpstart, but it’s not the only September release, as we are about to go into yet another busy weekend. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, Scott McNairy, and Aisling Franciosi (“The Last Voyage of the Demeter”) star in Universal Pictures and Blumhouse’s remake of the Danish horror film “Speak No Evil,” which received rave reviews when it premiered at Sundance and ended up streaming on Shudder. Directed by British filmmaker James Watkins (“The Woman in Black”), this remake looks pretty straight-forward with the same premise of a couple traveling to visit another couple they met on holiday, with the biggest difference being that the respective families are now American and British.

Dave Bautista's career has seen highs with roles like Drax in MCU, but the sequel to "My Spy" is a misfire due to lack of acting challenges. "My Spy: The Eternal City" failed to capture the magic of its predecessor, leading to low ratings and disappointing reviews for Bautista. Bautista's recent success in dramatic roles shows his potential, but "The Eternal City" falls short and lacks top-tier filmmaking to push him to greatness.

Back during the pandemic, Prime Video acquired the rights to STX Films’ action-comedy My Spy, starring Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman. The comedy paired the Dune and Guardians of the Galaxy star with a preteen co-star for a comedy with action elements. Four years later, the pair reunited with co-stars Kristen Schaal and Ken Jeong for a sequel that flips the comedy with the action for an improved follow-up that is superior to the first.
In My Spy The Eternal City, we revisit JJ (Dave Bautista) and Sophie (Chloe Coleman) four years after the first movie. Now that Sophie is a teenager, she and JJ have a different relationship that is fraught with challenges. When Sophie’s choir is allowed to perform in Italy, JJ signs up as a chaperone. While abroad, JJ’s boss David Kim (Ken Jeong) pulls him into the search for an international terrorist that could threaten the world.

My Spy: The Eternal City's leading actress, Chloe Coleman, knows where she'd want to take the action in My Spy 3–if Amazon Prime Video greenlights another sequel.
The first film, released in 2020, starred Chloe Coleman and Dave Bautista. The story was relatively local, taking place in the United States, notably in various parts of Illinois.
Its sequel, My Spy: The Eternal City, amped things up by taking the duo international, bringing the spy action to Italy.

He may not be fighting in the ring anymore, but Dave Bautista still has some moves in his back pocket.
The WWE alum confirmed that he snuck his signature Bautista Bomb into a fight scene in his new action comedy sequel My Spy: The Eternal City, which is now available to stream on Prime Video.
“I just wanted to put it in,” Bautista told ComicBook.com. “We were working on that fight scene and I was like, ‘Oh man this would be fun.’ And now, it’s kind of become my obsession. I’m trying to squeeze it into every film just because. It’s one of those Easter eggs. I think if I can get it into every film, I will. It’s just a nod to my career. A nod to the fans.”

Flula Borg plays a role unlike anything he’s done before alongside Dave Bautista in My Spy: The Eternal City from Amazon Studios, and it includes far more fisticuffs than normal.
The family-friendly action movie is a sequel to the 2020 film My Spy, which also starred Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman as a father-daughter pair of spies. Released on July 18, this new entry sees them facing Flula Borg’s Crane, a hitman with an impressive resume.
While Borg is usually known as the funny man, there are no laughs from the actor this time. Now, it’s time for him to be serious as he takes on someone played by a former WWE wrestler with a straight face.

The 2024 action-comedy film on Amazon Prime, My Spy: The Eternal City, brings back wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista to the screens as he reprises his role as a toughened spy with a soft heart from 2020’s My Spy film. The plot this time has the protagonist, JJ, travel to Italy with his adopted daughter Sophie as part of her school’s choir trip. But the spy soon has to get back to his old ways when the CIA receives a serious threat and a close friend’s family is kidnapped. Overall, The Eternal City lacks content and style and might be adequate only for a light, mindless dose of entertainment.

Plot: When Sophie’s high school choir is selected for an Italian tour culminating in a performance for the Pope in Vatican City, JJ sees this as an opportunity to bond with his new stepdaughter, so he volunteers to help chaperone the group through the Venetian canals, across Florence’s renowned bridges and into Rome’s most historic sites. Instead he finds that he and Sophie have become unwitting pawns in a terrorist plot that could end the world as we know it.
Review: My Spy originally debuted at the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic after being pulled from release in August 2019. With mediocre reviews, the Dave Bautista-led action-comedy was solid family entertainment when audiences sorely needed new things to watch. Four years later, Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman have reunited for a sequel that is bigger and better than the original but still nowhere near as good as it should be.

The James Bond jetpack sequence in “Thunderball” (1965) was a cheesy-awesome thing that was like, “Whoa! The future will be jetpacks!” “My Spy the Eternal City” opens like a Bond film, or maybe a movie whose goal is to make the “Kingsman” series look weighty. Dave Bautista’s JJ, a former Special Forces soldier turned CIA operative, is on a private plane, where he’s playing bodyguard to a teen idol named Ryan (Bill Barratt). Out of the blue, he’s attacked by the flight attendant. As they go at each other with sharp objects, a helmeted figure zips through the sky in a jetpack, placing a bomb on one of the plane’s windows and blowing a hole in its side; everyone comes tumbling out, and a plunging-to-the-earth scuffle ensues.
The hook? The jetpack flier is Sophie (Chloe Coleman), a 14-year-old spy. While falling through the air and rescuing JJ,...

Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman return as covert operatives JJ and Sophie in My Spy: The Eternal City. Several years have passed since their first unexpected partnership, and their dynamic has changed significantly. Now a teenager, Sophie no longer sees JJ as the heroic spy who saved her life. With JJ taking a desk job at the agency, Sophie has lost interest in the secretive world that once drew her in.
Instead, Sophie’s focus has shifted to the typical priorities of a young woman her age. She wants more freedom from JJ’s protective oversight and the chance to experience life outside of constant espionage training. Their fracturing relationship faces an important turning point during a school trip Sophie and her classmates take to Italy. Unbeknownst to the students, nefarious forces are also traveling abroad on a dangerous mission.
As in the original film, Bautista and Coleman prove adept at blending humor and heart.

My Spy: The Eternal City lacks comedy and struggles to balance action, sentimentality, and humor effectively. The film features improved production values but falls flat in terms of comedy, despite a talented cast. My Spy: The Eternal City explores the evolving relationship between JJ and Sophie but fails to bring genuine laughs to the table.
My Spy was a theatrical release relegated to streaming with little fanfare because of Covid lockdowns. The generation that grew up with such gems like The Game Plan, The Pacifier, and The Spy Next Door may have been prone to share the Dave Bautista-led movie with their children or younger relatives, but the former athlete/action star meets precocious child actor formula wasnt enthusiastically welcomed in 2020. This was also the sentiment shared about My Spy, and yet it got a sequel with My Spy: The Eternal City, an unnecessary follow-up that struggles at every turn.

Back in January 2020, Australians were the very first moviegoers to see My Spy when it was released in theaters. In the following months, it was supposed to slowly roll out globally. However, plans changed significantly when Covid-19 hit and many theaters worldwide shut their doors. This family-friendly spy comedy starring Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman was set to face major release delays internationally until it was picked up by Amazon Prime Video. It was soon released in the USA in June 2020 and was a massive hit with audiences, ultimately becoming the third most-watched SVOD title of that year, respectively.

Decorated filmmaker Pete Segal is no stranger to comedies or sequels, but My Spy The Eternal City is far from his best of either. Writers Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber (alongside Segal) uphold the calcified pillars of Hollywood sequels, but their continuation hardly presents like an upgrade. What was once an undercover romantic comedy about a peewee spy in training and her hulking protector is now a generic espionage comedy filled with exhausting stereotypes. The cast welcomes tantalizing additions, the film relocates overseas, and theres a stronger sense of danger which would mean something with tighter execution. Yet My Spy The Eternal City deceptively lacks ambition despite European cityscapes and recognizable celebrity faces, failing to reassure that Prime Videos My Spy has franchise legs.

Bautista returns as a less than convincing CIA agent charging around the planet to protect his stepdaughter and defend against nuclear catastrophe
Former wrestler Dave Bautista has the chops, as they say, for comedy. He was terrific in the ensemble of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, playing a claptrap-spouting men’s rights influencer. But there’s not much going on in his performance here, headlining a charmless action comedy as a CIA tough guy in overprotective dad mode. Bautista’s delivery looks practically comatose at points, like a grizzly bear with tranquilliser dart hanging out of its neck, just about to thud to the ground, face bewildered and semi-paralysed.
The movie is a sequel to My Spy from 2020, in which Bautista’s CIA agent JJ is assigned to protect a nine-year-old girl, Sophie (Chloe Coleman). Five years on, JJ is married to Sophie’s mum and, squeezing his hulking frame into a suit,...

If most sequels tend to feel like hastily rewritten versions of the original, why can’t the same rules apply to reviews of said sequels? In preparation for viewing and critiquing Peter Segal’s “My Spy the Eternal City,” this critic returned to her own review of the first film, the spring 2020 streaming hit “My Spy.” Within that review: a number of ideas, thoughts, and opinions that could easily transfer over to this first sequel, with minimal edits.
For instance, in “My Spy,” star Dave “Bautista and a genuinely cute kid co-star can’t enliven this predictable and humorless entry into a micro-genre long due for a refresher.” Still true. Co-star Chloe Coleman and “Bautista are wonderful together — appealing, warm, and well-matched — but ‘My Spy’ just can’t capitalize on that chemistry.” We did ask for it. The plot? Peter Segal’s completely disposable 2020 action comedy My Spy was an entry into the microgenre featuring a strongman action star playing bodyguard to an irascible child. The film’s sequel, My Spy the Eternal City, embraces the equally hoary clichés of comedies revolving around stepparents, with Dave Bautista’s C.I.A. operative JJ adjusting to domesticity with the now-teenaged Sophie (Chloe Coleman) and her mother, Kate (Parisa Fitz-Henley), while struggling to relate to the girl as a parent and not merely a protector.
Naturally, JJ’s attempt to live a simpler life doesn’t last long, and when he elects to be a chaperone for Sophie’s choir on a trip to Italy, he finds himself embroiled in a convoluted scheme involving a terrorist plot after one of Sophie’s classmates, Collin (Taeho K)—who just so happens to be the son of JJ’s C.I.A. boss,...

Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman are returning in My Spy The Eternal City, the sequel to the 2020 family espionage adventure, My Spy, which picks up years after Bautista's CIA agent JJ moves in with Sophie (Coleman), his pint-sized spy protg and her mother, Kate (Parisa Fitz-Henley). This time around, the dynamic duo is heading overseas for that classic double threat daring, international espionage, and also, more dauntingly, a high school trip. Adding to the excitement, Collider can now reveal an exclusive sneak peek at the movie which should give our readers a fun look at what to expect.
